A huge bolt penetrated my tire, leaving the steel belt showing when it was removed. Luckily, I was only a mile away from Wheaton's and the tire held air long enough for me to get there. They removed the tire and wheel, saw that it was not repairable and quickly put on my spare. They ordered me a new tire at a price that was very competitive with Tire Rack, which was delivered the next day. Within an hour of the tire being delivered to them, it was on my car. They were fast, did good work, and were friendly. Based on my experience, I would recommend them. I would like to add another episode with Wheaton's from 1/11/18. I've been to Wheaton's several times since moving to Key Largo and they have not disappointed me. Yesterday, thinking that I had a bad battery (it's seven years old), I was able to get a jump start and got there just as they were closing. They still took the time to help me, checking my charging system and battery and telling me that it was just the battery cable that was loose. It's good to know that they're so close by. read more

I asked to have my gear oil checked and topped up (manual transmission) as I thought my vibration problems were caused by that. It turns out my transmission was full. I was charged almost $50 for about a ten-minute job - take out about 10 screws to drop the skid pad, undo the drain plug to see if there is oil. Then reassemble. I stood there and watched the mechanic do it. He claimed it took 1/2 hour @ $90/hour. I should have fought it, but I was frazzled not only from having my car have major problems hundreds of miles from home but suddenly finding out it wasn't the simple problem (leaking seal) that I thought it was. By way of comparison, a couple of days before that I had been in Homestead, FL when the vibration started. A mechanic there checked the gear oil on my request and found it was about a quart low (the car only takes 2 liters of gear oil!) he said my right rear axle seal was leaking. I had had this vibration problem 5000 miles before and was low on gear oil so I thought this would solve the problem until I got home. The labor charge was only $20 and they had to had to add the oil (charge for the oil was separate, of course). When my car's symptoms returned the next day I thought I had a major oil leak and was looking to get enough oil into the gear box to get me to Homestead because nobody in the upper keys works on VW's. Hence the visit to Wheaton's. I don't know if they single out tourists in trouble for 'special pricing', if I just got 'lucky', or if that is their standard way of doing business. They certainly won't have my business in the future. read more

Do not go there if you have out of state license plates. My daughter had my old pickup truck there with Georgia plates.. They quickly diagnosed a failed fuel pump. Estimate $900. She said that was too high. They gave her a bill for $50 and told her to get it out of there immediately or they were going to charge her $100 per day. They called the next day and asked if they could buy the pickup. I took it to Benny's Repair in Homstead. The cost of the repair was $450. read more

I enclosed a copy of my email to Wheatons concerning my problem with them. I would caution all customers to be careful if you have to use them. Dear Mark Wheaton: I am writing to express my concern about a defective oil change at your facility and the poor response to my concerns by your management. On 8/25/2014 at 21,192 miles you changed the oil and filter on my 2012 Honda CRV. See attachment 1. On or about 3/15/2015, I noticed small oil spots on my garage floor. It turned out the oil spots had been there previously but my wife was cleaning them up and failed to mention it to me. I cleaned the spots up and the next day I notice more small oil spots. As the CRV warranty was due to expire on 21 March 2105, I scheduled a service call at the Honda dealership in Homestead for 19 March 2015. I assumed the oil leak was warranty related as I have never had a problem with Wheaton's service on the vehicles I service with you. I dropped the CRV off at Honda; subsequently, the service writer called me and informed me that the oil was leaking from a hole in the filter. It was her opinion, and that of the Honda mechanic, that the filter was damaged during the installation process. I agree with their opinion based on my examination of the filler. I was obligated to pay for cleaning up the car and an early oil change. The total was $129.99. See attachment 2. See picture of damaged filter due to poor installation techniques at attachment 3. My concern is that your mechanics are installing the filters with incorrect wrenches which resulted in the indentation and the resulting small hole in the NAPA filter. My wife came to see you on 3/20/2015 and brought a copy of the Honda invoice, the service writer's card, and the defective/damaged oil filter for your inspection. After two hours, your solution was to refund the $31.15 we originally paid for the first oil change. No words of apology were offered nor promises to be more careful in the future. I find this response unacceptable. I recognize we are in the Keys and must be content with a lower level of service. Being here for 30 year, I have come to accept that as a cost to live in paradise. But in the 30 years I have been here, this is a new low point. I wonder what Wheaton's response would have been if the oil filter had blown out and cause serious damage. I have no desire to take my three Hondas to Homestead for service and to complain about Wheaton to anybody who will listen, but our current relationship leaves me little option. I would like to hear a response from you before I share my concerns. The response that would alleviate my concerns and rectify the situation would be a full reimbursement of the $129.99 I spent at Honda due to the defective/damaged filter as a result of your substandard work and an acknowledgement that I can expect your future work on my Hondas to be done to industry standards. I look forward to this situation being appropriately addressed and to many more years of doing business with you. read more

I just used this shop during our vacation in the Keys. Late on a Sunday night as we drove into Key Largo we got a flat tire. On Monday this shop ordered the tire and it was to come in on Tues at 1. While I would have preferred them to have the tires in stock it was a less used size and so I understood having to wait. The next day the tires didn't come in as expected. The owner, Mark Wheaton, located the required tires and drove and picked them up himself and had them put on and then realigned them himself. I was able to continue my vacation a couple of hours later. He was obviously distressed that they hadn't gotten the tires as expected and understood my frustration at waiting longer for my tires. Everyone was very pleasant and worked hard to get us on our way. I have returned home (VA) and the tires did well on that long trip (as expected). read more

Honest and trust worthy . My trucks u joints were going bad causing bad vibrations. this had been misdiagnosed at other shops on our way down including a dealership. They knew i was in a jam and went out of their way to be helpful and to make the repair quickly, even though they were short handed because of an accident on the bridge. I was traveling on vacation and had problems with my truck, which i needed to pull my boat home. I called and explained the situation and they said bring it in. They quickly assigned a technician and addressed the issues. I spoke several times with the technician on his progress. We stopped at this garage because our van tire was leaking air (passing through Largo headed south) . The positive reviews on Yelp lead us there over other area options. THANK YOU YELP REVIEWERS! Wheatons staff were all pleasant and quick to help. We had our tire repaired quickly for $20 and they even checked our spare to be sure that one would be available for any other unforeseen issues down the road. We don't like to review restaurants because we like to keep the good ones to ourselves, :-) but this service station should be known to the world as place you can trust for good work, fair prices and quick service. read more

If you enjoy being treated by service personnel with a bad attitude, who lack service skills and must hate their jobs of dealing with customers then ask for John at Wheaton's garage in Key Largo.. Arrived for an appointment made 2 days in advance with the goal of all work being done on same day. I emphasis 'They set the appointment' as to the date and the time to ensure their team had the necessary time set aside to complete the services requested. When I arrived for appointment first person I met was "John" who was sitting behind a desk inside the door behind the counter I will say from his greeting and demeanor it went down hill, He must be a graduate and top of his class with respect to the skills taught in the poor customer service hand book, 'no smile' and then treat the customer with the attitude of ' we are more important than you and be happy we are talking to you at all today," After looking at my service writeup his next words were Oil change is a yes but everything else is "Not going to happen", I shared I made the appointment so it could happen and after a minute he said, we will let you know in an hour and half if it can happen, may even be longer and again the other items will most likely not happen (never made one positive remark but filled with all the negative words of no and not going' happen and will not happen...... Never said we will try, we can do whatever we can or give me any hope for a positive outcome. He did say it was a long day and they were open a long time. But he also said, will not happen today. No reason why, and did not provide any explanation as to sorry or even seemed to try to seeing what he was saying from how it impacts what the customer side would be, despite my mentioning I had specifically arranged to have the work done. I felt that i was on the take it and be appreciative of what you get attitude, I went to the service waiting room and saw another customer. Asking them if they had service done here before and after exchanging a few words I learned the attitude of the 'we are the only game in town' is prevalent at this shop and the service team expects you to be happy with a wait till we get to you attitude. After seeing no action on my car for the next 30 minutest I went back up front, got my keys from John 'who seemed glad to give them to me' and told him I would be forgoing service with them, no questions asked as I left. Lord help them if this is the owners guy in charge as it is what future business failures are all about, it surely will impact money they could be making but are seem to be happy getting by on what they are now getting with poor attitudes and service. They may be the only game in town but it will catch up to them, I will drive a longer way to find another garage who may be worth paying your hard earned dollars for service with a smile verses paying for service with 'attitude'. I will also share to every neighbor or coworker the same message, It was a shame the owner was in marathon or I would have spoken to them as their absence may be impacting their service today. Lack of local options or competition does not mean anyone deserves this level of service, or should the owner hire employees who hate their jobs. No matter the drive distance I will go elsewhere rather than stand for service from an arrogant service advisor with a bad attitude, today's message is they clearly they don't need or do they want my business. read more

We received prompt, professional service at a fair price in February. They took our car in right away when we explained we were on vacation and our brakes were making an awful noise. They replaced pads and said the rotors were still good. Some garages would have seen this as an opportunity to replace the rotors and make a lot more money. Criminals. Ripping off the locals and tourists alike seems to be their M.O.. I needed two tires after having a blowout so i went to the closest place. After mentioning how much i paid for two tires, 375, i found everyone i spoke to not only said i was grossly overcharged, they said this business is well known as being a rip off. I am a person that does his own car maintenance and repair so was unaware of this reputation. After doing research i found that they charged over 35% more per tire than a place less than 30 miles away!! If you dont want to go the thirty miles for tires and you in the upper keys use b&b tires, wish i had. Not as cheap as driving to homestead but he comes to you and still charges less!!! Wish i was smart enough to research first and hope no one helps fatten this criminals pockets. read more

On vacation and all of a sudden somewhere halfway through the state of Florida my oil maintenance light comes on. We stopped by a Honda dealership near Miami, but they wanted us to drop off and wait 4+ hours for our car back. I wasn't willing to give up the day we had planned for a drive through the Keys up for an oil change. So off we went on our way to Key West. Then the panic sets in. What if the oil is low and we burn up the engine? I have my wife search to see if there are any service stations in the Keys. Wheaton's comes up as the nearest location and she calls. They were closing early due to the New Years holiday. We're only 10 minutes down the road so they agree to take us in. Huge sigh of relief. They not only fit us in, but it took no more than 35 minutes total for the work. Very honest and helpful guys at this shop. I would recommend to other travelers and locals alike.
