I have shopped here a few times. The store is large with great prices, but you can find that almost anywhere. However, the staff at W&S is fantastic. I took my bike in for repairs and a tune up on July 7th. After my bike was checked in, the sales associate said that I would receive a call back later on that day with an estimate and an explanation of what needed to be serviced. I never received a call back. I followed up the next day. I was told that "my bike had slipped through the cracks and it was not formally checked in nor had anyone looked at it." I did finally receive a call back a day later. The person who I spoke to informed me that I needed new brakes, a tuneup, and that my bike (a mid 90s Cannondale) had fallen under what he had dubbed an "ancient warranty." He told me that Wheel and Sprocket had ordered the parts that were supposedly still covered under a safety recall that had been issued by Cannondale in the mid 90s. He said that the Wheel and Sprocket "would have the bike done in roughly 2 to 2 and half weeks." I told him to go ahead with the repairs and the ordering of the parts. I waited for a call and never received one. I took it upon myself to call Wheel and Sprocket for a status update on Monday July 27th, a full 20 days after I had dropped off the bike. I spoke to a sales associate. He had no idea of whether or not the parts had come in and he had to check with the mechanics. After speaking with the mechanics, he informed me that now it "would be a month and a half" before the parts would be shipped. The mechanics also did not know that the parts (which were promised to come by two to two and half weeks) were not in. I then asked him, "are you able to make the repairs necessary to make the bike safe for me to ride? " He then replied: yes, but we are "not able to repair any bikes unless all parts have come in." At this point, I became very frustrated and called back the following to discuss my frustration with Colin, a shift manager at the Franklin location. He at no point apologized for the incredibly poor service and utter lack of communication. Instead, he claimed that "we just can't follow up on everyone with phone calls." I told him I would be picking up the bike later on that week and taking it elsewhere. I also informed him, that had I not kept calling for the most basic of service updates, my bike would had sat in their warehouse for months." He still refused to apologize and angrily retorted "we can fix your bike by Friday and we will just wait for the parts to come in." After hearing this, I informed him that I would be taking my business elsewhere." I picked up my bike on Friday, July 31st. The store manager, Patrick, waited on me. He wheeled out my bike and offered no apology and no explanation. read more

Wow. I will always go to Wheel and Sprocket. I brought my bike in for what I thought was going to be a big deal repair. They were so nice, did it so fast, less than a half an hour and the charge was totally reasonable. I left with a big smile on my face. This place is pretty terrible. They charged me $50 to change my break pads without even mentioning a price beforehand. They are very unorganized and don't know how to work their payment systems (overcharged me by $15 and tried to tell me it was just how their system worked). Took multiple tries to do simple maintenance. Didn't call or email to let me know their basement was flooded and wouldn't be able to return my bike at my confirmed pick it up time...I had to wait in the shop for 45 minutes until they figured something out (they said their basement had flooded 4 times already this year, you'd think they'd have a better system figured out). Just one problem after another at this shop. read more

I visited this place frequently for 4 years while I lived in Evanston & they were great each time. I've bought a bike and a bike rack from them, as well as a number of accessories. I've also utilized their mechanic services for tune ups, part replacements/repairs, etc. In all of these interactions, the staff has been friendly and helpful and they've proven themselves to be very knowledgeable. They're also good about scheduling and reasonably priced. And just as importantly, they've always returned my bike quickly, as promised. I'll miss this place. read more

I was looking for a bike that was a close out model (Surly Pug Ops) and couldn't find it at any local shop until I found it at a Wheel and Sprocket store in Wisconsin and I live in Chicago, but after an email and phone call to the store in Evanston IL, they offered to ship it to their store, and a few days later I went to look and it as well as a test ride and I was impressed with the not only the bike but their customer service too, I'm not an everyday bike rider and I could tell they sensed that about me and they went out of their way to explain every detail of the bike, so I left with two bikes one for me and one for the kid very impressed and I will definitely go back again.... read more

Twenty years ago, this place would have been a godsend. However, most of their amazing selection can be found for cheaper on the internet. Their repair service is terrible. I went in to get a spoke replaced and the work was laughable. They are either incompetent or crooks. My derailleur was of center and some of the other spokes were loosened. Either it happened on accident or it was intentional since the guy kept trying to upsell me on various other services. Avoid this place and go somewhere trustworthy for repair work. read more

Knowledgeable, courteous, pleasure doing business with, as an owner for 40 years in the service industry, I have not experienced customer service like this in a extremely long time, the courteous service person removed a set of Saddle pedals and un-packed a new Trek bicycle from the box, so I could use the box for shipping another bike, when I went to pay, the gentleman explained there was no charge, BLEW ME AWAY, where can any of us remember something like this happening? This is my place to go for anything I might need for my bicycle. They carry only the best brands, which explains why they can be expensive. I don't know what the other reviews are talking about, because the service is good! All the employees are helpful and kind. I wanted to buy some new brake shoes, and the man said that I don't have to worry about those, as they were apparently still good. Then he proceeded to do a quick adjustment on my brakes that ended up helping a ton, all for free! I've bought a few things there, like a seat, a bicycle computer, a brake cable, and handlebar grips. All of those things were very high quality and work very well for me. Although, I need to get some cantilever brake shoes, but they were out for a week. A very minor inconvenience to me, and understandable, as cantilever brake shoes are very out of date anyways. This is my one-stop-shop for all my biking needs. read more

i've had two back-to-back wonderful experiences with this place. i'm not a 'cyclist' by any stretch of the imagination and have no business owning the nice bikes that i have which explains why my beautiful bianchi racing bike was hacked apart at the beginning of the summer. i took the remaining pieces of the bike cadaver to wheel and sprocket and was not only met with heartfelt sympathy (nobody made me feel like even more shit for having left the thing in a vulnerable place for so long) but they spent a considerable amount of time helping me find the most affordable replacement parts. the bike looks absolutely gorgeous. having learned my lesson, i got a different bike off craigslist to use as an every day rider and within a day they made it look and feel brand new-- going above and beyond to keep it as theft-proof as possible by installing ball-bearings in the headset. it cost me a pretty penny but definitely worth it for the service and results. read more

I am just getting into biking, and just have an old little 8 speed Schwinn. I am gearing up for a 90 mile ride and had taken it to another bike shop to put the deraillers on as it was converted into a single speed when I bought it and wanted the speeds back. The last place had put in the deraillers kits and within two days the front derailler already wasn't working. I brought it over to wheel and sprockets, a location closer to work, and I was so pleased with the service. From being greeted, not pressured right from the door to working with Gretchen an awesome mechanic who took the time to really explain everything: what went wrong, how they'll fix it and how long the repair will take.. I was very impressed. Although the repair was simple within an hour they contacted me both by phone and email to let me know it was ready to pick up. The whole process was so simple and I was very happy with the entire experience. I will definitely be back for any upcoming fixes and absolutely recommend: they clearly know what they're doing. I just bought a bike from here and absolutely love it! Larry was super helpful and patiently answered all of my questions without being pushy about selling the bike or accessories. He took the time to teach me about the bike, maintenance, safety, locks, shoes and pedals, and good trails in the area. He even helped size my helmet! W&S ordered the bike for me new since I didn't want the floor model, and they contacted me when it was in and everything was installed. Larry then helped me put the bike rack on the car when he was off the clock and running late for an after work commitment. Overall, this place is very friendly and helpful, and the customer service is great. I know that if I have a problem, I'll be able to take it here and they will do a quality job. The service plans are good, too. All in all, I think it's worth paying MSRP, especially since it is such a long-term purchase. Thanks Larry for the help! read more
