When I moved back to Evanston I knew I would be turning a lot of those car miles into bike trips. I have not always had great experiences with bike shops but Wheel and Sprocket has great customer service and their shop is organized around service. You press the button to open the double doors and go right down the center aisle to the repair queue. They stay in touch via text and email while your bike is in the shop. My repairs and annual maintenance visits have all been one day at most. I special ordered a tern folding bike and they got it delivered and spiffy with a three year service plan. It's really the only way to go. Online just doesn't cut it when it comes to bikes. This is the kind of local business you're thrilled to have in your downtown. read more

My bike was serviced here a couple of times and the work they do at this location is very good. The first visit they fixed a flat tire and this recent episode they did the following. * Brought my bike in for a full tune up * Replaced my handle grips * Installed a kickstand * Did a saddle replacement. My used Trek went without service for years so the tune up and refresh was desperately needed. I went on my first ride since the repairs and my bike rides like a dream! My tire hose was replaced, they trued (aligned) my wheels and adjusted my front and rear derailleurs. I no longer hear squeaks when I hit my brakes and I don't hear my chain make a clack noise when I'm pedaling. During COVID times, an appointment is highly recommended. Services are to be prepaid via credit card. Expect lines out the door. I waited at least 20 minutes on a weekend to pick up my bike but these days this is the norm. read more

This is a great business in Evanston and I'd rather recommend it than not but I've had some experiences here that have felt like a real waste of time. I've had to bring my bike back 3 times for a pretty serious complication involving my bike seat. Then I had another one two years later with my brakes. Had to go back 4 times. I was trying to install a chainguard, but my (wrong size) crank puller got stuck in the threads, and Chris was kind enough to squeeze me into their booked schedule. They approached my problem with efficiency, compassion, and integrity. In addition to the automated notification for bike pick-up, I also received a personalized email from Chris detailing the work and kindly validating my own shoddy work. I stopped in here just before Memorial Day. I really, REALLY appreciate the COVID-19 protocols they have in place (or did, at that time--things have changed statewide in the interim so I'm not sure what may be in effect as of today). They had a line forming outside the store, and there was a staff member who came out every few minutes to check on what folks were there for and letting them in one at a time to ensure there weren't too many people in the store at one time. Masks were required at that time, and they'd hit you with a squirt of hand sanitizer as you came in the store. The sales staff I spoke with just left me kinda lukewarm, though. I went in and mentioned I was interested in an eBike, and they showed me one. I had mentioned I was particularly interested in Tern, and gave a couple reasons for why that was, but the person I spoke with showed me the Tern model they had (just one, it seemed), and then showed me over to the Trek bikes instead and said he'd suggest that one. I'm not really sure why he didn't seem interested in giving me much info on the Tern model that they *did* have, and instead pushed me toward the Trek. I was in the store for probably about 15 minutes and he spent maybe 1-2 minutes on the Tern and then talked about the Trek and showed me some of the information online about it. They also don't offer test rides as a general rule. I'm not sure if that's a COVID precaution or not. If so, it makes some sense, but I wasn't sure if that was it because he didn't say that whilst the pandemic was happening they couldn't offer them. He did say that if I contacted them to arrange a test ride before or after hours that it might be possible. But I'm wasn't prepared to buy a bike I'd never tried before (especially since it's been some time since I rode a bike) without testing it out first, especially at the price point of e-bikes, and having to make an appointment before or after hours was somewhat of an inconvenience since I work during the week and would have had to wait another week or two to do a weekend--and that was even if they let me since he didn't fill me with confidence that they'd definitely set up a test ride if I wanted one. On the plus side, the store was much larger than the other bike stores I've been to and they had a good deal of inventory and accessories. On the other, I just didn't feel like I got the level of personal attention or assistance; it was more like they would answer basic questions about the bike, but as someone who doesn't know much about bikes and bike riding as a hobby I didn't really know what to ask. In fact, I specifically asked if there was something he thought was important to know about them that I hadn't asked because I hoped that would get him to give me more than just superficial information about their inventory. TL;DR: It was ok. If your'e interested in e-bikes, there are better stores (Four Star Family Cyclery would be my suggestion). And if you don't already have a handle on what you're looking for in a bike, you might not be given much more information to help you understand the options/features to make your choice. read more

BIKE FALLING APART! They did not tighten the peddle crank upon assembly of my bike.. The whole crank came off while riding 16+ MPH on the Lake trail. I'm lucky I didn't get hurt. I spoke with TREK and they informed me that the assembly person "FAILED TO CHECK THE TORQUE" upon assembly. I'm really disappointed! read more

I am so glad I found this place! I was having some issues with my new bike (I purchased it somewhere else). I couldn't change the speed, I needed a new seat, and a U-lock installed on my bike. I was immediately greeted by the staff. They were very nice and super helpful. Charlie worked on my bike. He helped me choose a seat for my bike (so far the seat is working out great!) and was able to install the U-lock. I went somewhere else before coming to this shop and another bike tech told me that I would not be able to install a U-Lock on my bike due to my bike frame. Charlie was able to solve ALL of my issues! Again, awesome customer service! They work quick and their prices are more than fair. I even purchased a pair of sunglasses while I was there. :) I can't say enough about this shop. I've been to other places before where I felt out of place. That was NOT the case at this shop. I've been coming here for years. First to service my old bike, then I bought a new bike in 2020, which I love. They are always friendly, the service is prompt, and when they say no charge for an adjustment, it really is free! They are pretty busy, and last time I was there on a Friday they told me they wouldn't be able to promise to look at my bike until Monday, then texted me Saturday afternoon to say they were done! Under-promise, over-deliver! Also, I appreciate that they are clearly LGBTQ-sensitive, with preferred pronouns on name tags. I'll definitely keep coming here! read more

Meant to review about a month ago. I rode up to Evanston from Chicago one weekend and blew my tire... conveniently right around the corner from Wheel & Sprocket! I left my bike outsider with my friend walked in, asked if I could get a flat fixed on the fly, and was Happily asked "well, where's your bike? Bring it in!" I was helped by two wonderful employees whose names I wish I had gotten. They fixed my flat within 20 minutes and it was reasonably priced. Really cool shop, too. I'm very impressed by how the bike shop has treated me and my bike since I bought my Verve bike there more than a year ago. They greet me every time I come in for the tiniest of service adjustments (like putting air in my tires) and went way overboard fixing big and small problems--including replacing my chain at no cost because it was starting to rust--in my annual service package. I had a really good experience buying a used bike here. It's easy enough to browse inventory on their website, and it only took a couple of days for it to arrive. I'm not a hardcore cyclist, and didn't feel pressured to buy a bunch of additional stuff. And I didn't feel like I was a failure as a human being for not buying a brand new wonder bike. Larry helped make some adjustments to the bike, showed me a couple of features I might not otherwise have noticed, and was very helpful. One minor thing - I wish they could deliver small parts directly to your home. They didn't stock the pedals I wanted, and helpfully offered to transfer them to the Evanston store. But I didn't want to make another 45 min round trip for something I could just buy online. read more

I purchased my first bike in many years from Wheel & Sprocket. the employees were nice and helpful, but unfortunately, I had nothing but issues with the bike from day one and nobody at Wheel & Sprocket was willing/able to help. I didn't know what to look for while riding the bike for the first time, so I didn't realize that the derailleur was slightly bent the day I got it. After having some issues shifting in my first couple weeks, I brought the bike in. The mechanic who helped me adjusted the barrels on my shifting cables a little and informed me that the derailleur was bent. No warranty work was done on the bike. Derailleur is still bent and the bike still has shifting issues. Fast forward a couple weeks. My front disc brake was dragging, bad. Like, wheel barely moving bad. I take the bike in again. They keep my bike for a week, tried to charge me (luckily a manager stepped in), and I get the bike back with a brake that is still dragging. I begged the store for a replacement bike, or for them to do some warranty work on the bike, and once again was denied. I was told I could "talk about switching into a rim brake bike" and that "disc brakes just drag sometimes." I ended up looking up how to align disc brakes and doing it myself. Turns out the rotor is slightly bent but I'm not even going to bother trying to get it replaced. At least the wheel moves freely now. Buying a bike for nearly $800 that doesn't work correctly from day one, and then having a store that is largely unsympathetic to the fact that the bike doesn't work, really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'll be shopping elsewhere for my next bike. read more

BROKE MY BIKE! VERY LOW QUALITY! I gave two bikes for maintenance and agreed to pay $250. They said they might change parts costing up to $70. They emphasized $70 is the maximum amount. I said okay. They sent me a bill of $331 on the next day. I said nothing, it was just $11 more. When I went to pick up my bikes the bill was $349, which was $29 more than the maximum amount that they promised. They did not increase the bill by $29 at once. They are well aware that the customers do not say anything when the bill is just $10 more. They add $10-15 each time. This is ripping off. There is more. They BROKE the two shifts of one of my bikes. When I said they were broken they said they were like that. Wheel & Sprocket: Please answer this question: why wouldn't a bike store fix broken shifts when maintaining a bike? Given that you are trying to charge more and more, you would fix those shifts if you didn't break them yourself. My wife and I are sure that the shifts were not broken at all. Now they are broken and even not working properly. So, the maintenance that Wheel & Sprocket offers is to break shifts and make them not work. They just want your MONEY. Do not WASTE your money. Instead, try to fix it on your own: this is easy if you know how to break the shifts. read more

Couldn't be happier with the selection and service. I don't have a lot of experience with bike pricing, but I am comfortable saying that I certainly got what I paid for. I brought in a hand me down triathlon bike that I wanted to turn into a reliable commuter. They fixed me up with a more comfortable seat, a solid waterproof light system front and back easy USB charge--a solid rack and set of waterproof, easy clip on bags so I can ride with nothing on my back. Also a solid U lock and some special screws for the seat/wheels/handlebars so that they would be much more difficult to steal. Normally I would watch YouTube and make a day project out of installing everything myself, but they made it so quick and easy and affordable that I just had them do it and it was worth the extra 75.00 or so of labor. I also knew that in a few months I will also need winter tires as the road tires are too slim for ice...and I may want fenders as well. There was no pressure to do it all that day, they understood, showed me options, and they know I'll be back. Also worth noting they didn't make me feel bad for not knowing much about bikes. Tom provided me with some suggestions to change the fit of the bike. To be honest his suggestions were counter-intuitive to me, but I put my faith in his advice and it worked great!
