Professional-level knowledge and advice, paired with free air for your tires? This is the place. If you're looking for a warehouse of new and previously-owned bikes, then you won't find it here. But if you're looking for a LBS (Local Bike Shop) with personable employees with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things related to cycling, and who can give you a definitive answer to all your cycling questions, then this is the place to go. I got back into cycling last summer, and after suffering some high-pressure salespeople at other LBS in the area, I went to Glenview Cycle with a bit of hesitation. But after introducing myself and explaining my needs, the first thing the staff did (and it was a slow day, so ALL the staff were involved, even the one's actively working on bikes in the back workshop) was to get to know me, my story, my budget, and my cycling plans for now, in the future, and even remote possibilities. This was a change of pace for me, because in my previous experiences, it was, "Oh, you need a road bike, come look at this and this and this..." So to have them take the time to understand my goals and then have a more casual conversation about what I would NEEED, versus what they had in stock, I was really impressed. Now, part of it is because they are a smaller shop, so they don't have a lot of actual, physical bikes in store. But they do have nearly every style of bike represented, so you can sit on a few models and get a basic idea of the fit and feel for each type. They're a Giant dealer (most LBS are paired with one or two manufacturers, similar to car dealerships), so when you are getting into the buying stage, they will always recommend Giant first. But they also recognize that some people are very brand-loyal, so they will recommend some other shop if you're looking for a Trek, Cannodale, Specialized, etc. They'll even recommend bikes you can only buy through websites (like Felt) if they feel that's the best option for you. And they'll assemble any bike you buy, regardless of where you buy it from, but for anything but Giant, that assembly will be an extra charge. And once they have assembled and given you a basic fitting, that's only the beginning of the relationship. They'll take you through the ins-and-outs of your new purchase, make sure you have all the accoutrements you need (Giant forgot to provide a part for my bike, but GC provided me one from their spares collection) to get you (in some cases literally) rolling out the door. And speaking of the door, one of the nice touches is that, even though they're a small shop, they had an automatic door installed to help you wheel your bike in and out. The one downside is, as stated, they're small, so while the choice of bikes is supplemented by Giant's warehouse, the choice of things like bike kit, helmets, shoes, and other cycling-related gear is very limited. The good news is that they recognize that, so if they don't have what you need, they'll make recommendations on what you should get so that you can just find it online (or even at another LBS). All-in-all, Glenview Cycle is great for anyone of any cycling level, from kids just getting into cycling, to people looking to compete in Ironman triathlons. The staff is knowledgeable, personable, and sometimes you can find yourself going in to ask one question, but talking cycling with the staff for an hour (or maybe that's just me). They really love this sport, and you can really feel it when you interact with them. If you know what you want, or need guidance for your first purchase, this is the place to go. read more

I first went here during the pandemic when I started riding a bike. I didnt know what i was doing to my bike, tried to install some parts and ended up damaging the bike. I decided to check out the local shop, and Alan and his staff are always very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. It's been four years since my last update. Brent the puppy-eating (allegedly) vegan mechanic left the state and is currently on walkabout, but is still in contact with the shop. Dan also left the state and works with a company specializing in bike transport and tour support. He's even done some pro tour work! Frank is old, and still lovably cranky, but he seems to be retired. Chris left the bicycle field entirely, as well as Cook County. Alan remains, and there is but one person in his employ steeped in youth; the rest of the team have plenty of experience. When I told him that I'd be updating his review to include Yelp's new category of gender neutral bathroom, he fired back "As long as you wash your hands, it's all good." Yes ladies and gentlemen, he's there all week, and STILL will remember your name after the first visit. Let's start with Rodney (but don't start with Rodney unless you know him.) A former bike racer and current mechanic, and gifted guitarist (I've yet to see him perform but he's been in the Chicago music scene for some time) he is a man of few words, most of them well-chosen. You'll know he likes you if he puts you down. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Top-notch mechanic. You'll usually see West on a Monday or Tuesday. You might also see him on a utility pole on your block. I did, once. Shocked the crap out of me when I just said hi to this guy on a ladder as I'm riding by and he responded "Hey Steve!" Back when Chris was at the shop, he was the calm to Chris' high-energy. Now West is more middle of the road; still mellow. John. He'll tell you he's old, but he's not the cranky kind of old Frank was. He's worked in the bike industry for well-over 30 years, and is still trained and up-to-date on the latest technologies. He's worked EVERYWHERE. Well, not everywhere, but he's known at a number of shops, and they still say good things about him. He's still a passionate cyclist, and probably most likely to be the one to hop on his bike of the lot. Last, we have Steven. He's the youngest and tallest of the bunch. He's the only one of them who can comfortably test-ride my bike. Every shop needs a giant. He's good-natured and kind; I don't think he's ever worked on one of my bikes, but customers seem to like him as a mechanic and for sales. I've seen no issues with anyone. This is still a shop where you can come in for a new tube and leave an hour later, wondering where the time went, because you struck up a conversation with other customers, looked at new socks, and wound up buying something you didn't know how much you needed until that very moment. With the Dairy Bar next door (in warmer months) I always stop by and see if anyone wants a cone. I live in Glenview, this is the only bike shop within 5 miles of my house and I want it to stay for a long, long time. It's the one I know the best, but almost every non-chain bike shop gets a 5-star review from me, and deserves it. If you want to read about one who doesn't, check out my review of Sportif Importers. Bleech! Don't buy your bike or gear from a chain or the Internet, unless your favorite shop tells you to. Without local shops for parts and repair, getting a bike fixed will take days, and even simple parts like tubes or a new chain will mean your bike could be down for days. Had a great experience today in the shop. I feel bad I never got the guys name who helped me. I had an issue with the barrel adjuster on my breaks. Turns out the slotted lock nut had cracked, and the only nuts they had we non-slotted ones. They then modified the non-slotted nut to be slotted and it fit perfectly. I was in and out in about 20 minutes and it cost me all of $10. Outstanding service today and I will for sure be bringing my other bikes there for service. read more

I am a serious and competitive cyclist (triathlete). I've had myriad bad experiences with other shops doing sloppy work on my bike -- the team here is the only one that I'll let work on my bicycles. Shop is passionate about service, tends to recognize repeat customers, and can typically get you ANYTHING if they don't have what you need in their current stock. Please read this review in its entirety. I didn't plan on buying a bike at Glenview Cycle ... I really didn't. I had my heart set on a Specialized Roubaix and was going to work with another bike shop closer to home. But I knew the owner, Alan, casually and a good friend of mine had been working with Alan for years. Although I had already (kind of) chosen the bike I was going to buy, I wanted to cover all the bases and I knew that Glenview Cycle was a Giant dealer and was going to check out what they had. My friend and I went over on Saturday so I could test ride a bike or two. They had a Giant Defy Advanced 2 that was the right size for me. I test rode it, felt that I was reaching too far, so they swapped out the stem for something a bit shorter. Another test ride and I thought the bike was a good fit. Alan quoted me a very reasonable price that included some upgrades I wanted. My friend and I went to check out the Roubaix at the other bike shop ... it was significantly more expensive than the Defy. I ended up buying the Defy. After a few weeks of riding, I noticed some issues with the bike ... odd noises, parts of the bike were rubbing that shouldn't be. I took it back to the shop and Alan & his wrenches took a look at it ... they couldn't figure out what the issue was. A couple of days later, someone noticed that the seat was out of alignment with the frame. Due to the nature of the frame, you couldn't just rotate the seat to bring it into alignment. There was clearly a manufacturing defect. I took it back to Glenview Cycle and asked Alan to look into it. He talked to Giant and got the frame swapped. However, they didn't have the same frame available ... so they gave me a frame two levels up (along with a carbon stem). The new frame worked great ... but there was still some issues that needed looking into. An intermittent noise coming from the drive train area. Alan once again talked to Giant and got me a new crank set. The new crank set was also an upgrade (105 to Ultegra). That didn't solve the noise problem, so they swapped the wheel set. This DID solve the problem. So you're probably wondering why I'm giving the bike shop a 5 star rating with all the problems... well, Glenview Cycle (and the owner Alan Rubin) went well above & beyond normal customer service to help me get a bike that I really love to ride. The ONLY reason I don't go to Glenview Cycle on a regular basis is because they are so far away from where I live. read more

Let me start off by saying this shop is Top Notch! Great prices and great knowledge on every type of bicycles, and if they don't have the answer, they will look into it and get back to you. I've taken several of my bikes over there and they've always had taken care of me! Unfortunately for me my local bike shop, Wheel and Sprocket definitely over charges for service, which is sad, but the fortunate part is that I will always go to Glenview Cycle for any of my needs. Alan has always been kind and patent person with me on my requests on things and my latest project which I should be receiving soon and would like to give props to is one of the guys there, Isacc the Wizard of installing DI2 wiring and making sure everything works and provides opinions on what would be best for your bike. Great experience with Isacc, also pretty cool guy and chill. I had asked him to send me pics of the progress and minutes later I had got them which was pretty cool .. he also face-timed me on some of details that he thought would work best before doing anything on the bike which for me is more than above and beyond other shops would probably do for anyone. Needed help making sure my electric bike was good to ride. They helped me immediately and were very easy to work with. After about an hour later and a pretty reasonable price for the work done they already had me on my way. Alan and his team are the best. I have always used them for repair and service but I recently had a problem with the rear wheel on my bike and as it was a Wednesday, they were closed so I thought I would try to bike shop in the suburb to the north. They told me I needed a new wheel for $80 and it would be three weeks they are so busy. I said no and took the my bike to Glenview a few days later. They looked at it and quickly saw that I had a broken spoke. They fixed it on the spot for $25. They also said a new wheel if it had been needed would have been substantially less than $80. Don't go anywhere else for your bike needs. read more

Quick and professional service. What more can you ask for in a business? I had to replace the front rim on my Trek 820 because of an accident with a Honda Pilot. The specific color of rim was not in stock but ordered and ready within one day. The price was outstanding and barely over the cost of the rim. I bought a road bike from then in spring of 2014. They are very friendly and knowledgeable. My bike had a free tuneup a couple months after purchase as well as a year later. I brought the bike in late for all the tuneups and they still did it free for me! They are always willing to take the time to explain what's needed and fast! I like these guys. I bike a lot, so I've had reason to frequent a few of the bike shops in the near north shore area...Turin's, Pony Shop, that place in Wilmette. And those were good enough, but sort of missed that "something". Glenview Cycle has that "something". They're not super-crowded the times I've been there, but they also don't have that "ready to turn over and die" feel. (I also went VERY early spring, before people started realizing biking season was coming, so that could be it.) Their people are knowledgeable and friendly. Oh, and they are EASY to get to, even if you dislike riding in the streets. That's one thing that bugged me about the Wilmette and Evanston bike shops...they're squished into storefronts in areas that aren't 100% bike-friendly to get to. But Glenview Cycle has long stretches of clean, easy-to-ride streets and sidewalk all around. So getting to them in a hurry after work or whatever isn't difficult. You don't groan at the idea of all the turns and jostles over curbs or whatever. You just get there. They also have air for your tires out the front by a hanging tube, which is available all year round they told me (aside from the super-cold weather which might cause the rubber tube to crack. They disable it/bring it inside on those days. Every other day it's out there though, day or night. So if you need air in your tires at 2am, it's there and free.) They're not as big as Turin in Evanston, they don't sell as many varieties of bikes (for example, no Treks and mine is a Trek and I've been faithful to Trek bikes for 10 years), but if you have a bike already and need it tuned up or repaired, they are there for you. read more

Everyone at Glenview Cycle is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. When I go into the store I don't feel like they're trying to sell me something, but more that they're just trying to be helpful. They're exactly what a local shop should be - a positive member of the community and a place where you feel like you can go in and have a discussion with experts without feeling any pressure. On top of it you can tell they're just plain passionate about bikes. Last year I got a new car and my old bike rack doesn't fit it. My bike needed a tuneup and a new tire but I didn't have a way to get it there, and the logistics of having friends or family help me just weren't working out. It occurred to me to contact Glenview Cycle and see if I could pay them to pick it up. Turns out they already do pickup and drop-off for people, and at a really reasonable fee. I was so excited. Alan scheduled my pickup same day, and the following week brought it back all tuned up and ready to go. I would never get that kind of service from one of the "big box"-type stores. I can't say enough about Glenview Cycle. As long as I live in the area I will not go to any other store for my biking needs. read more

Really great bike shop. I made quite a few visits here while in Chicago for a few months, including purchasing a bike for my wife and getting some refurb work done on a used bike. Prices are very reasonable and the service was always excellent. Enough good things cannot be said about these guys. After I moved back to Oregon, I had to leave two bikes behind in a parking garage due to space constraints. They picked them up, packed and shipped them to me, thus saving my local friends and I a ton of hassle. While you're waiting, be sure to stop by the Dairy Bar next door if it's in season. read more
