We just found out that this bakery is here in Davis Square and will be stopping in more often! The bread is made fresh and smells wonderful as you enter the store. They carry dozens of loafs to choose from, and everything looks good. We grabbed some to give to a friend, and I picked up a chocolate bread loaf for myself. Went in here yesterday to buy bread and left because the man working was so absolutely, unbelievably rude to all the customers. It was around 11AM, and he literally was trying to pick fights with customers. An old man asked a few simple questions, and anther person asked to sample the bread, and his responses were so hostile and rude. We left the line. I love When Pigs Fly Bread and use to frequent the Portsmouth and Newbuyport locations, but wow if this man is the owner he needs to close shop and if he is a worker he needs to be fired. Love their sundried tomato loaf and sourdough bread. You can get a large loaf of sourdough for only $2 every Wednesday-- seriously can't beat that. They have a range of savory and sweet breads that look promising. They also have spreads and select baked goods I'll go back to try sometime! The service is mediocre-- What I mean is, most of the times I've gone the staff member had head phones in and looked not too happy with his job. Great great great bread and awesome customer service. The employee who helped me was an individual with a beard (I believe his name was Sean), and he was so so so pleasant and helpful. He instantly greeted me when I walked in with a kind and exremely friendly greeting. I took a little bit deciding and then asked for his suggestions, and not only was he patient, but he was so informed and told me what I could pair with different kinds of bread. Not only was the bread he suggested delicious and perfect with what I made for dinner, but my interaction with him was awesome. When Pigs Fly has great products and an even greater employee in Sean. They come to Kendall Sq for the weekly farmer's market and I'm not sure if it's this location, but they send a rep to SoWa on the weekends, too. Bread is always baked fresh and they have numerous options of different flavors/styles of bread. The best part is that it's all very reasonably priced. I think it's between $5-6 for a loaf of bread that will last for a few days. All of the bread is hearty and perfectly soft, popping with flavors. The Bavarian pretzel is my go-to. $4 for a pretzel that is soft on the inside, slightly hard on the outside, and salted to perfection. It goes great with stone ground mustard and it keeps well while traveling from the farmers markets. Heat it up in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and it's good as new. I have been coming here for a few years, but I have never reviewed it. First and foremost, I want to thank the amazing When Pigs Fly customer service team in York, Maine. I lost a gift card and looked everywhere for it and couldn't find it. I was upset as I looked at is as wasted money, so I decided to call and after I gave the information to the customer service team, they said they would call me back. About an hour or two later I got my call and they told me they would hold the gift card. The overall experience was EXCELLENT and I give credit where credit it due. Now for the actual store and products, the people that tend shop here are always very pleasant and talkative and they will always give you a sample if you ask to try something so don't be afraid to speak up! The bread, the cookies and the bread pudding cake here are amazing. Very fresh and very tasty also completely natural. My personal favorites are the cranberry orange bread, my all time favorite, and then apple cider bread that just came around. Also, all of their cookies are amazing, but my favorite is the heath bar with the salted caramel coming in close second. Finally, I haven't had a bad bread pudding their either, but the best is the chocolate one. Finally, my only recommendation is that you freeze the bread if you don't plan on eating it in a couple of days or so. The bread is very fresh and has no preservatives so it can go stale quickly if you are not going to eat it fast then freeze it for later. read more

I love When Pigs Fly breads. Their products are superior to those that you buy in the grocery stores or bakeries. The staff is super nice and knowledgeable about the products. My favorite are the 9 grain wild blueberries and the Baby Spinach, Onion and Garlic Ciabatta are my favorites. I often buy these and freeze half of each flavor. All you need is some good butter and sea salt if you want to keep it simple. read more

4.5* I lived for a brief while in Somerville and absolutely loved this bakery. The cranberry, orange peel walnut and walnut maple breads taste like a light cake and taste amazing with your favourite gouda. The Tuscan loaves are also delicious and very dense in the best way possible. The chocolate bread might as well be a cake and the olive bread is also a winner in my book. They have a $2 deal on Wednesday which is just the cherry on top. Not all breads taste equally amazing, but chances are you'll find something you'll be back for. Downside is that you're paying around $7 for a lot of the loaves. Another downside is that the bakery opens at 10am which is at least 3 hours later than I'd like my bakery to be open. Overall, you should give one of the locations a yet because life is too short for mediocre bread. read more

If I'm going to be claustrophobic, it might as well be in room of monstrous bread loaves. Holy shit, this store front is small. Like, room enough for you and a stick of butter. But WPF has what you need - a plexiglass L displaying three tiers of dense, delicious, baked-in-house breads. Chocolate, olive, red pepper hummus + sesame, rosemary and hot garlic oil, several fruit and nut breakfast breads... the list of specialty boules and such goes on, along with your standards (french, tuscan wheat, sourdough and a gaggle of rolls). Each loaf rings in between $4-6, with baguettes bottoming out at $3. Not terrible for tha freshness, but definitely a premium. Of course, after sampling one of everything (they always have hunks out for tasting), you'll be powerless to resist. Remember: fresh bread only lasts a few days, which means unless you're entertaining disciples, plan to freeze the leftovers. It thaws beautifully and toasts like a champ. Oh, and definitely try the Hot Honey they carry. New England bee vomit kicked up with vinegar and chilies. Sweet heat rules! read more

I love their bread and was SO incredibly happy to learn during brunch this morning that they had opened a shop right on the very block we were eating on. WHAT LUCK. EVERYTHING YOU COULD EVER WANT for bread (well, except challah and some other choice breads but i did not expect them to have those). My friends suggested we stop here for midnight madness. Ehh, ok. It's not that I don't like bread, I do. I just didn't think of bread as destination-worthy. It is. Oh my God. At one point, I had chocolate bread in my hand and was greedily asking for a taste of the savory cranberry (who double-fists bread? I do!), both of which were absolutely amazing. In the end, though, I settled on the curried butternut squash bread with raisins and pears, which was just too unique and wonderful to pass up. The savory cranberry was a close second, though, and tastes exactly like stuffing (which I happen to love). I also bought the pumpkin bread pudding cake, which I admittedly haven't tried yet, but it sounds amazing. Everyone was super helpful and it was an excellent experience overall. I came here after work with a friend just to check it out. There was BREAD EVERYWHERE, and I was hungry! Apparently, the people behind the cash register noticed this and they started feeding me sample after sample after sample -- from olive bread, to sundried tomato, chocolate, cranberry pistachio, potato... This was heaven. I will DEFINITELY be back to buy the bread I sampled. My favorite was definitely the green olive with peppers -- but I will not knock the chocolate. Soooo, I avoided this place like the plague. Not because I don't love tasty carbohydrates or because I am a mean-spirited gal...but because I knew as soon as I took a bite I would be addicted. The staff is super-friendly, the tastings are plentiful, and that golden raisin pecan bread will be the death of me! Get a couple loaves sliced, pop them in the fridge or freezer (they freeze really well) and you'll have amazing bread whenever you need it. Another plus: the bread is a great, healthy snack. When Pigs Fly bakery offers some delicious varieties of bread. Hummus bread? Hell yes! Their bread tastes great - no doubt about that. But I must say, their bread sold in supermarkets is just not very good, and that is where I am focusing my review. Since I'm not able to stop by their bakery in Davis often, I usually buy bread directly from the grocery store. The thing is - their bread is never fresh in the stores, and I'm not sure why that is. Perhaps it is not packaged well? Perhaps it has been sitting out for several days? All I know is that the bread is hard and dried out, and it makes my usually earth-shatteringly-delicious sandwiches crumbly and taste like sand. Now I definitely do not like preservatives in my food, nor do I eat crap "bread" like Wonderbread - yuck! But I am baffled as to why buying directly from the bakery is so much different from the ones sold in stores. As a result, I won't buy their store bought goods any more. One product I can get behind is Jessica's Brick Oven. Super fresh and no preservatives. I wish WPF would take a cue from them. read more

mmmm carbs to get me through the dark, cold Boston winter. I've been by twice now, and the ladies working there are always friendly and eager to cut you a sample of any of the 15 or so kinds of bread that have. Last night we even managed to roll in 10 minutes after they were supposed to close (7:30pm on most weeknights) and they still gave us plenty of time to figure out a couple of favorites. First, either of the olive loafs (green olive + cherry pepper or kalamata +roasted red pepper) are absolutely amazing. The first is a tad bit spicier than the last, but both are great savory breads. As for the sweats, I'm a sucker for any cinnamon type thing. Plus they have a rotating holiday type selection which before christmas was a yummy bread packed full of rum soaked raisins and pistachios. Currently it's a bread that is ridiculously similar to carrot cake (in a tasty way.) We went with a standby of walnut, banana, and maple sugar though. Yesterday Dorian saw an ad on The Phantom Gourmet for When Pigs Fly, and asked why we hadn't been. I had no good answer, and we decided to go today. We went relatively early to miss the crowd, and we tasted some free samples of bread with the strawberry jam they sell here while waiting in line. Once we got to the counter, we went a little bread crazy. We ended up with a loaf of chocolate bread, a loaf of banana nut with all sorts of other stuff in it, a loaf of sourdough, and a loaf of potato, onion, and garlic. We also tasted a few other samples that didn't make it home but were fun and tasty....for those of you who like adventurous breads, definitely try the black bean bread; it's got lots of spiciness in it! The bread slicer makes the entire building shake, and while they don't make the bread there, there's a lot more of an assortment than what they carry in the supermarkets. I made sunny side up eggs with spinach, tomatoes, and cheese and put it over the potato bread for breakfast, and it's pretty much the best thing ever for a Sunday morning. read more

There were only two things I craved during a recent illness- some simple instant oatmeal and some walnut, cranberry, orange bread from When Pigs Fly. Fortunately, I have family members who live near this location so they could stop in and pick up a couple of loaves at a time, which I kept thinking would last for a while. No. I pigged out like little old Porky on this bread and it kept me alive and sane, if somewhat more rotund than I would like to be. This location is a five minute walk from Davis and is small and cozy. Lots of samples help you evaluate which six dollar loaf is the best fit for you. I love the heavy, fruity loaves, rich and dense. They are definitely at their peak when they are very fresh. That's one reason I like to stop in here instead of get my bread at an outlet like Shaws, which also does not offer as many choices. (You can also pick this bread up at many of the farmers markets.) Don't get it sliced there. Just bring home a hefty loaf and warm up a chunk, slather on some butter or Earth Balance, and behold. You will be a happy little piglet. (Note that almost all of their bread is made without eggs and is vegan friendly.) read more

I have often bought WPF bread at the market and was so excited to hear it was opening a store front right down the street from me. After a frustrating shopping trip to Davis square, I walked by WPF and discovered that it had finally opened. I walked in and greeted the kind women who worked there with what I would want to hear if I was new in the neighborhood. "Hello! Welcome, I am so so happy you are here" The very nice ladies offered me free tastes of any of their breads and helped suggest the best ones for a killer bread pudding I was making. So ok... I haven't been to their store, but they are at the farmers market and I seem to visit them every week. They have everything going right. They will give you samples of all the breads they have that day, I mean, if you're not giving samples then you obviously can't run a food business. I end up buying more than I should because the flavors they have are awesome. I so far am in love with the olive breads (hot too), lemonade bread, hummus, whole wheat pumpkin and so on. All of them are good, the chocolate bread is good! What I like about it is its not a dessert bread, its a yeast bread so its not sickeningly sweet, its great and I love them. My favorite thing abotu trying the samples is what immediately comes to mind "the most sharp cheddar you can find will go great with this lemonade!" or "grilled cheese made with provolone on this olive bread!" Its just awesome. A loaf is a little expensive at $6 but its also very worth it. read more

The two loaves I've tried from here were BOTH amazingly delicious however a little pricey. Granted I still buy terrible white bread from market Basket for my PB&J sandwiches WHICH I still eat at the age of 28 (don't hate), but this place is a whole different ball game. I see alot of bitching going on about prices, textures etc. Christ, its a bread shop in a Boston. Not exactly the baking capitol of the free world. Last i checked there wasn't flour all over the floor and the place was the size of my kitchen, so if you're expectations are mass produced loaves of french bread go to shaws. I think the prices are totally reasonable, the place is SUPER friendly and the bread is banging. they always have a little sample tray out and you can try a few different things before you purchasing from one of the (again) SUPER friendly staff. Now i do agree that if you lived out in the middle of nowhere and you had a 105 year old grandmother that had been baking bread for the majority of her life it would taste better, but i don't have that luxury. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the US and without having access to a car or a expert bread baking granny this place does pretty f*ckin good. I mean i haven't checked out the baked goods aisle at rite-aid or sovereign bank, but i'll keep them in mind next time i'm walking through the bakery district of somerville. 5 stars no - but 1 and 2 stars? read more

The shop is small and cute, and the staff have always been extremely friendly and helpful. You can buy loaves sliced or unsliced. Great for a dinner party or special meal. You can also find some of the breads for sale at local stores like Star Market in Porter Square, though the shop on Highland Ave has a wider selection. If you're local to Boston or New England, perhaps you've seen When Pigs Fly's bread in your local grocery store. But really, you need to visit one of their shops. The nice folks in WPF will slice you off a piece of any of their loaves for you to try. The classic breads are, of course, delicious, but the artisan breads are truly where it's at. There are savory breads (like Red Pepper Hummus with Sesame Seeds and Garlic or the Potato with Garlic and Dill) and sweet (Banana, Pecan, Maple and Brown Sugar or the famous Chocolate). Whatever you get, you won't be disappointed. Gordon and I tried the limited edition Banana, Peanut Butter and Chocolate chip bread and ...wow. Just, wow. All the bread is between $5-7 or so.
