On the Island, coffee options were sparse until a big chain came into town. However, Whidbey Coffee has been here as long as I've know. They are my consistent coffee spot and it warms my heart to see them branching out off the island! Since their remodel and rebranding, they have installed comfortable seating, structured this location to have seats by the fireplace, and areas suitable for single party patrons to small groups. I always feel at home whenever I am there. There food offerings have expanded, they carry: bagels, warm breakfast sandwiches, cookies, quiches, and Flying Apron baked goods! We are so lucky here, the selection of wonderful coffee shops is abundant. Whidbey Coffee is one of my favorites both for the food and drinks, as well as the people! I just stopped in the drive thru for a frozen mocha (which is this yummy icy creamy concoction), only to find out their machine was down. Instead of letting me be disappointed, they offered to make me one from scratch with the blender for the same price. I often like to visit the shop but I this morning was EXTREMELY uncomfortable watching one of the barista's terminate the employment of an employee publically. She was stopped at the door and the barista firing this girl had a HORRIBLE attitude. It was unfair, unprofessional and inappropriate. Why wouldn't they do that in private? What kind of establishment allows their employees to be publicly humiliated? The employee being let go was extremely held together although visibly shaken. They left this poor girl crying and can absolutely owe her an apology. 0/10 on today's experience and it will be my last. read more

I grew up going to Whidbey Coffee, back when it was just a little drive thru stand next to the jewelry store...the service and friendly staff were always on par with the quality of their coffee....over the last few years I've noticed the quality in their drink crafting slipping...as to be expected when expanding...it seems like this once novelty shop has just become another Starbucks superstreamlined coffee company. It's sad....they've strayed so far from their "small town spirit" that now it seems like every cup is just another transaction...the coffee quality has fallen and the customer service has left a once loyal customer looking elsewhere for good service from those who care as much about a good interaction as they do the quality of coffee they craft for the cup read more

Recently the manager at the hotel I'm staying at laughed at me for stopping at one of the coffee stands in town. She explained that the best coffee on the island is at Whidbey Coffee. I had to take her advice and she was right. This may be the best coffee I've ever had. It is strong but extremely smooth. As I remember, Whidbey Coffee used to be just a coffee stand. The old building is still outside sitting next to the new coffee shop. There is a large area for sitting and enjoying your coffee with comfortable chairs, a warm fire, and tables if you choose. WIFI is available for free. They also serve food at Whidbey Coffee. They have breakfast sandwiches and a few pastries. I did not try the food, but it looked excellent. This place is very clean, but has an older and cozier feel to it than most coffee shops. It smells like Grandma's house when she's cooking breakfast! Starbucks tends to have a more modern feel creating a completely different atmosphere. Whidbey Coffee feels la cabin in the snow at a ski resort! Great coffee, friendly quick service and a nice spacious inside with lots of chairs, and tables, and even a fireplace for those cooler days. Most of all though, take in all that they have to offer in the way of pastries and baked goods. Truly, these options were all amazing looking. Double Fudge Brownies. Lemon Bars. Croissants. Scones. Macaroons. Stacks of cookies. Muffins. And the biggest rice krispie treats you've ever seen! Whidbey Coffee Company is a wonderful indulgence here in Oak Harbor that should not be missed by anyone. I thought I left a review a few years back, well anyways... So I am for supporting local and small coffee place if they are good. This place isn't it. I try to stay away from Starbucks but when I'm in this town, Starbucks is what I get from now on. The coffee would taste like water whether I ask for more or less milk. I thought there was something wrong with my taste bud but when I have friends that try it, they give me the same look I give after I have a taste of my coffee. Maybe it's just my coffee that they make it horrible. I can honestly say I have not been greeted when I enter the place. The place seems pretty clean and that's what the one star is for. Staff seems dry and not necessarily unfriendly but not that friendly either. I have seen that they do like dogs where people at the drive through that has dogs in their vehicle gets some treats. I have ordered their k cups online for myself and as gifts for friends. I ordered the single served k cup pod Whidbey blend, decaf and French roast that comes with 12 k cups in a box. The French roast was the best tasting one out of the three to me. I would receive the package with the box damage and one of my k cups didn't make it but had a lovely hand written thank you note. What's sad is that the k cups aren't bad but tasted better than the actual place that's makes the coffee for me as a customer. This is terrible, I noticed my review is put in the not recommended section for this place and so it many other negative reviews. This is bias and I wonder if this place is paying YELP to keep negative reviews low posted. The customers deserve to know what kind of coffee they are being served. read more

As a past employee of 3 years, Id like to share with you some behind the scenes of your morning cup of coffee. From working 6-8+ hours with no breaks, to retaliation against all of their employees depending on who was the favorite that day. From sexual comments and harassment and threats from coworkers to being ignored when reaching out for help. I dont want to get too in detail but please choose wisely who to get your morning cup of coffee from. Their employees are treated so poorly and deserve so much more. I've been here a handful of times. The ambiance is inviting, with the fireplace and cozy/rustic styling. And it's certainly a safe place to run to in the event of an apocalypse, since you're almost always likely to find a few cops on break. Whidbey Coffee did an admirable job of converting an old jewelry store into a decent coffee shop with a cozy Northwest vibe, which is why they've become the go-to "meet up for coffee" place in Oak Harbor. However, their steamed espresso drinks are nothing to write home about. I've seen employees re-steam milk that's been sitting on the espresso machine for who knows how long, which is probably why friends/family of mine have compared the taste of their mochas to dishwater. read more

Skagit Valley Hospital/Medical Center I ordered an Espresso Milkshake. It wasn't creamy like the espresso milkshakes made from ice cream. I asked what she prepared. She insisted it was a milkshake JUST LIKE what all the other espresso stands make. Not so. I've watched others scoop ice cream into the shake cup. Whidbey's shake was like a blended frappuccino. I really enjoyed this coffee shop. The layout is just the right balance of tables, large group room, a sit down bar, and sitting couches by the fireplace. The food was delicious. When one is in need of a pick-me-up, Whidbey Coffee delivers! Figuratively, not literally. You still have to get off your lazy bum and drive to them, but they do have a drive-through! Great sandwiches, salads, and coffee! I visit regularly and have never been served a sub-par product and the staff are all super friendly. Once, on my first visit there, I had my beverage overlooked in an order, and I waited 15 minutes in the dining area. When I hadn't received anything after 20 minutes, I finally walked back to the counter and asked about it. The person had accidentally missed it and made it on the spot. To compensate further (without a complaint from me even), the staff member handed me 2 free drink coupons for another visit. Guest recovery at its finest! I love it all. 9 out of 10 times, my order is created exactly to my liking and without any specific instructions on my part. Whidbey Coffee just seems to be great at hitting it on the nose with a satisfying cup of coffee. What Whidbey Coffee is not so great at is hospitality. While the atmosphere is extremely charming, especially considering the cozy fireplaces and armchairs, the people serving the coffee leave something to be desired. I have been a frequent customer since January 2008. So, for more than five years now, I have been loving the coffee and just waiting for the day I enter a Whidbey Coffee store to genuinely friendly service. I am talking about the kind of service in which: #1. I am (enthusiastically) greeted at the counter, rather than being stared at (with snooty annoyance) as I take my time to decide. *I like to keep life exciting and change up my order from time to time, therefore I am not always immediately ready. #2. I am thanked by the person taking my order. After all, if it weren't for customers like myself, how might that employee expect to receive a paycheck? Those two things, I really don't see as being difficult to provide! Honestly, I'd much rather spend my money at Starbucks and get a not-so-great cup of coffee in exchange for the genuinely friendly and welcoming attitude. Having worked in customer service for many years, I have learned to appreciate the value of humility in the work place. I am no better than the person standing in front of me; no matter their outward appearance or their personality. True, some of us must work harder to be engaging and welcoming with others. We all have our good days and our bad days but working in customer service, you've sometimes got to "fake it till you make it." Leave the trash at the door as you walk into your job in which you work with the public. Unless of course you have a government job like working at the DMV or the post office, and on that note: I have had MUCH better service at the post office! I don't care if it is a smaller family-owned business or a corporate franchise. All paying customers need to be treated with the same humbly friendly service. As a customer service employee, it is not my job to judge others! I have found that (as I am human) on my down days, being friendly and lifting up a customer with my smile or warm greeting actually lifts me up, too! Customers are not always receptive to this and this is especially difficult to do with a grumpy, unhappy customer. That makes no difference. That needs to be the goal with any service related job: to have the customer leaving better than when they came in. Whatever happened to the Golden Rule? How nice it would be to have a business establishment increase the quality of their service so as to keep customers coming back, rather than leaving livelihood to fall solely on the quality of the product! Oh, and, don't the employees themselves represent the product and it's name? So, too, should their attitudes inside and outside of the workplace! Either: -management is extremely hard on and lousy at creating good morale for their employees at Whidbey Coffee -management is oblivious to the nose-in-the-air attitude that too many of their employees work with OR -management and employees BOTH take for granted that they have jobs AND that their customers are the reason they have a job to go to in the first place! Sadly, I may just have to take my money and start inviting friends for coffee elsewhere. The response I got was "we have everything that starbucks does." Seriously??? Do you never get out of town visitors? I'm from the northeast, we don't do Starbucks. I am torn between a few things. The one on pioneer is absolutely terrible coffee and terrible service, I have been there a few times and every time I feel that I should get back there and make it myself, and the service is piss poor. The one on H20 is better we go there all the time but find ourselves going less and less. The quality is getting worst and we find ourselves depressed as soon as we see the one that can never remember what we get, that we have a dog and he requires a treat, and that her attitude sucks.
