Overall the food quality was very good but the menu prices were a bit high compared to similar restaurants in the area but as I said, the food quality was very good so perhaps that justifies the prices. Two things I didn't like was my daughter ordered the special of the day without asking the price which was spaghetti with three meatballs and a slice of toast, $26.00. You read that right, $26.00 for a plate of spaghetti, probably cost less than $5 to make. Nice mark-up. The second thing was when I went to pay they had one of those hand-held payment devices with the tips starting at 18%. Now 18% really isn't that bad, I often give tips more than that, but when the menu prices are inflated it doesn't justify a high dollar wise tip based on the total bill. read more

For the first time I chose to eat Lunch at Island Cafe. I ordered the Avocado Chicken Sandwich. It comes on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo and cheese. The onion and pickle is served on the side. The sandwich is loaded with avocado wedges and the chicken is juicy and delicious. I chose fries for my side dish. My food was actually good, but the reason for the one star is due to the lack of customer service our waiter provided. The cafe wasn't busy either, maybe 4 or 5 other customers inside, but Cristian chose to blatantly ignore us on numerous occasions. There was a gentlemen sitting next to us and anytime he requested the server he came running. When we would try to get his attention he would walk right by us. Friends and I were up in Oak Harbor very early on a weekend morning and wanted to get a nice hot breakfast. We walked into the Island Cafe, promptly greeted and seated with glasses of iced water. Our orders were taken promptly and our breakfast beverages delivered quickly. The food came out quickly as well and was enjoyed by all three of us. My wife and I have been coming up from Everett to this restaurant every Wednesday night since discovering it about 7 months ago. The food has always been top notch with excellent service to match...until last night. We had been out of town for about three weeks and were looking forward to visiting one of our favorite dining places. My how things changed in those three weeks. The server, Kaitlynn, seemed more intent on trying to be cute than actually doing her job. Before going away we had seen this girl once about two months previously when she was just beginning her training. She still struggles with the order system software, her 'perfume' was so overpowering that you could actually taste it while eating, she went around constantly humming very loudly and whatever it was she hummed had no rhythm or identifiable melody...it was VERY annoying. At one point I asked her if she would bring my wife a straw for her water. She said, "no problem", and then proceeded to go behind the counter and just screw around with something else. The straws were right across from our table, not even 4 feet away, so I just got up and fetched it myself. But, unfortunately, Kaitlynn was only part of the tragedy. As I said at the start of this review the food here is always some of the best around, but tonight's meal was a different story. Most of it was warm at best, the hash browns were very hard and crunchy, the bread for the french toast was stale, and the cheese we asked to be added into both of our orders of scrambled eggs was more like uncooked yolk than cheese. To put the final icing on this cake, the kitchen crew had Hispanic music cranked up so loud (as well as them singing along to it) that it overpowered the Christmas music in the dining room. Combine that with Kaitlynn's incessant loud humming and it was a cacophony! I don't know what happened in the three weeks we weren't able to visit this place, but it really fell apart for us last night. We'll give the Island Cafe another shot because it has always been so consistently good in the past...but we'll make sure to come up when we know one of the other servers are working and we will hope the kitchen staff has been spoken to. read more

We had breakfast at the Island Cafe during a holiday weekend. There were 3 gals on the floor running the Saturday morning breakfast shift. Gal 1 was our greeter. She didn't even look at us or say anything. She just grabbed some menus, took us to our table and took our coffee order. Gal 2 was our waitress. She was kind and took our order quickly. Gal 3 was in charge of bussing the tables. While these 3 ladies were waiting for food orders, and not waiting on customers, they all looked tired, sad and annoyed. No smiles, no talking to each other. It was quite amusing since they were on full display to the customers while standing behind the breakfast bar. The food was pretty good, but the ambience was terrible. These gals definitely need to be cheered up. read more

Not being much of a breakfast fan, I was so happy to find out that I could order Fish and Chips at 8:30 am. Everyone else in our group ordered the Country Breakfast, which looked amazing. I love the small cast iron skillets they use to serve the eggs. Scrambled eggs, ham, green peppers, onions and cheese (from the menu) are all mixed together and served with biscuits and sausage gravy. My Senior Fish and Chips was more than enough---one piece of batter dipped deep-fried cod and fries (again, from the menu). Crunchy and delicious makes for my kind of meal to start the day. Griselda was very patient with us and was very helpful in making decisions. When we are on Whidbey again, we will also be at Island Cafe. read more

As we entered the restaurant, the staff was very friendly. Our server was also one of the most welcoming, friendly and nicest person we met! She was very patient with us since we haven't been there and not knowing what to eat. If you are heading over there ask for Chris. She's amazing and caring. The menu have a variety of choices from all day breakfast including hash brown, toast. Also specialty salads, dinner plates, sandwiches and hamburgers they are all included French fries with or without seasonings (garlic)which was delicious!! The lemonade was also one of the most tasty, sweet and tart. We're definitely going to return on our next visit to Whidbey Island at Oak Arbor. The ambience is definitely a family place. There are really two reviews in one here. I say that because my potatoes rancheros where great! They definitely were in the high 3s of good. However. My daughter's country breakfast with biscuits and gravy had issues. She took her first bite of the biscuits and gravy and gave me such a confused look I had to ask. She said it was sweet. So, normally I would not review someone else's food but I had to taste for myself. She was right. It was not just a little sweet. I detected a distinct flavor that reminded me of that icky frosting they used to use on grocery store sheet cakes! We told the waitress who said she would tell the cooks. The fish and chips came with coleslaw, which was ok, but not the best. The fish was pretty greasy on the outside. The inside was cooked nicely and had a flaky texture. The fries were pretty standard. The garlic shrimp skewers were really good. They came with two pieces of grilled bread and a side of warm garlic butter for dipping. Overall pretty decent. Stopped in for dinner while we visited Oak Harbor. They have an extensive menu. I noticed a man eating ribs near by and it looked good, but didn't see it on the menu. Little did we know, there was daily specials that we were unaware of. I got the patty melt (it was ok), my husband got the deli sandwich (he said it tasted good and fresh-just what he wanted), and my daughter got the Mac and cheese (I liked it, but my daughter thought it was ok). The service was quick. I think this place is probably better for breakfast or brunch. Overall, our experience was pleasant but the prices are on the high end for what you get. read more

While on a recent trip to Whidbey Island, we stopped at both of the Island Cafe locations - this one and the one in Anacortes. When on vacation, I love to find a restaurant that serves a high quality good ol' American breakfast - and this place did a passably good job doing that. The restaurant itself is clean and inviting, with the expect seaside ambience. We were greeted promptly, seated quickly, and our server was friendly and pleasant. As this was apparently Chicken Fried Steak Day, I opted for that, along with hash browns, two eggs over easy, and white toast; my companion went with a veggie omelet, a side patty of sausage, and a biscuit with country gravy. (We appreciated the prior warning from our waitress that the biscuit was enormous, as my friend could barely consume half of it and ultimately took the rest home. That plate, with gravy, may well have weighed two pounds.) The food arrived within ten minutes and, though the portions were generous, we both found the sausage gravy to be surprisingly bland and essentially unseasoned - was that actually sausage or just ground pork? Whatever it was, it took numerous shakes of salt and pepper to give it much flavor at all. The Chicken Fried Steak may have been batter coated and fried on-site, but I'm inclined to think that it was from frozen. The hash browns were tasty but, unlike the Anacortes restaurant, I was only given one slice of toast rather than two. My eggs were served as requested and, according to my friend, her omelet and sausage patty (from frozen) were fine, All in all, breakfast was acceptable, filling, and certainly better than a Denny's or a Shari's would have been for the same meal, but ultimately we got more quantity than quality. For a locally owned establishment, I expected a bit more but ah well. read more

I would not recommend this restaurant. My husband and I ate at this restaurant twice during our stay in Oak Harbor because it was convenient. The food was disappointing each time, though the cafe itself had a pleasant ambiance. Throughout both visits, we ordered waffles, eggs, hashbrowns, mozzarella sticks, and a French dip sandwich. All were bland, flavorless, and cold. The waffle was soggy like it had been frozen. The mozzarella sticks were cold in the middle (probably because it was also frozen). Scrambled eggs were dry and flavorless. Even my toast came out almost burnt to a crisp. The manager (I'm assuming, as he was dressed much nicer than the other employees) didn't even seem to care that I only ate about 4 bites from my plate when he took the plate away. The fajita omelette was very filling, I would definitely order it again.
