My husband and I made the trip to the Whip In in south Austin. A place I have been wanting to eat at for years. We live super far north and just didn't want to drive down there for lunch. But today was the day and it did not disappoint, in fact, I text four of my friends while eating our appetizer to tell them they had to come eat here!!! The atmosphere is everything I wanted it to be and more. Quirky south Austin vibe and super relaxed patio or indoor seating . The staff was nice and very helpful with making suggestions. However, I don't know how you could choose a beverage because there are so many options.The beer and wine selection is out of this world amazing! We had the vegan samosas, the woodland burger, and the chicken lunch special with garlic naan. It was a bit pricey ($46+ tip) for lunch that didn't include alcohol but totally worth it. We even said we would make the drive for lunch or dinner soon. Definitely a place I would love to come back to for a date night with friends. read more

I think this place could be a lot better than it is. The wines on the menu were actually quite delicious (especially the Cab Sav from Washington), but the service was pretty bad. I sat with a friend at the bar for about 1.5-2 hours and my glass was empty a few times for more than 20 minutes without the bartender paying attention to ask me what I wanted. It wasn't even busy. Also toward the end of the night we were demanded to move down the bar because they were setting up some sort of event. I didn't mind moving of course, but the way we were told was straight-up rude. I'll be honest & tell you I was disappointed when I first glanced at the menu, but I quickly realized I had to take "Indian" with a grain of salt. Whip in is Indian season food mixed in with your typical European fare. Slight gentle twists on your classic favorites let you have lentil falafels, lamb burgers on naan, and enormous sized samosas. They have great food. But their menu numbers are complicated. Last time I went, the menu had different categories like bowls, appetizers, plates, etc, and their numberings were the same. So when we ordered, we told them a number and they ended up serving us the wrong food. But they were really nice and got our proper orders to us faster than I thought they could. This place is the best. It's dive-y, laid back, reasonably priced, and they have food along with a large variety of wines and beers. It's a grocery store mixed with music venue/craft beer bar. Be warned, this is not a typical Indian restaurant, and I couldn't be more happy that it isn't a typical Indian restaurant with the same ole crappy buffet food. This is unique Indian Pub Grub!! As a person of Indian origin, for someone to claim racism is ridiculous. Get a grip!!! Clearly, someone is pretty sensitive. Believe me, for those that are connoisseurs in finest beer, music and unique fusion pub grub, there is no place better. As an example, one night we went just for food and some Belgium ales but ended up staying the entire night after a sitar jazz ensemble showed up! It's like that every week! Cool concept, everyone was nice, and the food was delicious. As visitors we felt it embodied Austin culture perfectly. The grocery stole model is super cool. We ended up ordering some food and it was delicious! Super tasty and the portions are LARGE! They were also super accommodating in making my friend a special dish given that she was running the marathon the next day and she wanted some protein and carbs. We sat outside and were grateful for the heat lamps. You have to go inside to order which is fine. There was a parking lot but it was full when we got there. Whip In is the best "convenience store" you will ever visit. If great beer and wine are your thing, then you should be spending a lot of time in this establishment. Over 300 beers in the display cases and over 70 taps at the bar. The kitchen serves contemporary Indian cuisine that is made fresh daily from organic, hormone free, non GM, cruelty free ingredients. I have tried about half the menu so far and every single dish was par excellence'. My favorites so far are the Samosas served with a tamarind date sauce and the South Asian Frito Pie. The staff are all experts on beer, wine and food pairings and are eager to get you lined out on an imbibing and culinary experience you will not forget. The atmosphere inside is cozy and familiar and the staff maintains a level of witty joviality that keeps a smile on your face. There is a stage inside and music acts book there regularly. Also of late there have been comedy shows which were very good. Schedules for acts are on their website. There is a second stage on the side porch which is great, weather permitting. You could not make this place up. In one way, it's your pretty standard convenience store, country bar, patio performance place with people in clown makeup doing Pirates of Penzance Indian food place. But it feels like much more. We came in for beer and had some good ones. GREAT selection and I wanted some help finding a good local IPA and the bartender could not have been more helpful giving me a few samples before I told her to pick one for me. Out on the patio, there was a very small local craft brewer selling his wares. I got a chance to talk to him, have some of his beer and keep the cool looking glass. We ordered some food. Nachos and then plates and plates of Indian food which was amazing. The average age of the patrons was about 22 but even at my advanced age, I was made to feel right at home. I cannot say enough good things about The Whip In. The food is always awesome and the beer and wine selection is even better. I just hope this place is still thriving in Austin in 10 years because I'm going to want to keep coming. My husband and I have been here many times and most recently we were told to try the Frito pie. It was great, as I expected. But their indian-inspired food is more my speed. If you like Frito pie you should definitely try theirs though. The samosas are HUGE and come with a great dipping sauce. My other favorite thing about this place is the staff. I dont even know why this place was listed under indian food. Horrible, knock-off szechuan chicken and slightly (?) fried rice listed and passed off as "Indian" chili chicken fried rice. No joke, part of the reason I looked for another apartment in the Riverside area was to stay close to Whip In (or at least, being nearby was on my wish-list). This spot is a great place to casually grab a beer after work, or venture for lively entertainment and larger crowds on the weekends. I've also had a fantastic brunch experience here. There are always a ton of beer options, and the fact that there are both small bites and meals available make it a great choice for whatever the occasion. The Whip-In has a decent micro brew selection - they do make it a point to get local beers into their roster. They also carry a decent selection of packaged beers if you want your beer to go. Sometimes they might have something for sale that Spec's doesn't! Decor is a hodge podge of Indian and Austin, I think? Food is Indian based, nothing amazing, but definitely something you should try. This is a pretty interesting place with a cool history. It was recommended by a friend who raves about it. Very eclectic vibe with nice patio and small stage for music. Inside, it was almost as if there was a beer bar and a separate wine bar. So many great beers to choose from. I sat down and ordered a hummus plate. The naan chips were thin (in a good way) and had a great flavor. The hummus was pretty loose, but also had great flavor and the spices and veggies on top were a nice addition. For my meal, I opted for a "panaani" and ordered the Barton Springs sandwich, naan folded over turkey, bacon, swiss and a habanero-cranberry chutney. It was awesome! I overdid it on the Yellowbird Habanero sauce by the end, but it was so good and complimented the sandwich perfectly. Solid alcoholic beverage selection with many beers available from the bar. The food was tasty. I ordered the hummus as well as the Tikka Masala. It was a lot of food for lunch and I ended up taking a lot of the hummus to my hotel, which proved to be a great idea. The tikka could have been a little hotter for my taste, but was still flavored well. The space is seemingly used like a starbucks. I believe I was the only person not on the wifi on my laptop, which just adds to the uniqueness of the place even more. So if the mood strikes to sit and work and eat indian and drink beer, head on over! I'm giving five stars on the beer alone. I've been dropping in (whipping in?) here for over ten years. They always have what I come for. Usually Guiness Extra Stout. Sometimes Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale. And I usually mix it up with one of the new singles they have. They have had many different looks over the years. The current one is not bad at all. I love the well rounded selection of microbrews on tap. Especially the local ones! And for $3.50 a pint during happy hour? So nice... And the staff have always been nice and helpful. The Kamala beers are not included in Happy Hour, but I tried the Bitterama anyways. It is a unique beer. Definitely bitter and you can taste the Earl Grey. If you don't mind bitter, it is worth a try. They also carry a wide selection of specialty and seasonal drafts including Jolly Pumpkin (I'm from Michigan, so it is fun to find tastes of home). Tried the samosas. Two came in the order - filled with carrots, peas, potatoes, and raisins. Large, a bit on the sweet side, tasty. I would come back to try more food. This place is certainly keeping Austin weird! This is a completely unique kinda place. It's hard to describe something as eclectic as Whip In. Imagine Indian food, with live country music, and craft beers & wine, with a small grocer that mainly sells wine. The place is decorated like a Kathmandu flophouse, with weird beer signs and Hindu kinds of artwork around on all the walls. They serve up delicious-smelling curries. The place has an outdoor area that's just as strange, with fun outdoor stage for events or live acts. They have their own beers on draft, along with a bunch of other local and hard-to-find beers that will satisfy the pickiest of beer snobs. If not, they have their beers meticulously sorted in warm and cold varieties, from all over the world. They had many, many beers that I had never even heard of. The bathrooms were small, graffitied but somewhat clean. The staff was a bit cold, but served up the beers quickly and properly. It's hard to find bars that properly pour a pint- this guy did it right. Parking can be a challenge, and it's right off I-35 southbound. read more

This is the kind of place where you could stay as long as you like working on something or just hanging out. Not usually crowded, though they do host some events from time to time. My only complaint here is the service. Every time I've been here, at least one or two food items at my table have been forgotten or wrong and I've had to track down staff and ask more than once to have them replaced. Mistakes haven't been egregious, and no one has been rude, but the order mix-ups have happened enough times to be a pattern, not a one time mistake. read more

We're so happy that one of the quintessential South Austin hangouts is only getting better. This was the first time we'd been back pre-pandemic, and we loved the way they've re-arranged the space. It's still funky, but now you can move around easily. And the food is fantastic! Keep in mind that this is not the place you go in Austin for authentic, perfectly-spiced Indian food. For us, that's the Clay Pit. But the Clay Pit will look at you funny if you come in in your old shorts. For a place where you can grab a weeknight dinner in friendly, unpretentious surroundings, the food is darn good! The beer selection is great, as always, and the wine section is much improved.
