If either of these courses are not on your list, or your on the fence about coming, change it and add these course to your list of play. Either courses are fun tracks that challenge you in different ways. The Cattail is a super fun track that has a lot of potential for scoring good. Greens roll really true with good pace and everywhere around them has crisp perfectly manicured grass defining the fringe to apron back to fairways. I wish the bunkers (sand) was more fluff and softer but still very easy to manage out of them. The course conditions were absolutely nice and pretty much as perfect as you would expect for a course of this nature. Cart guys, pro shop staff, starter were all great and super helpful and very informative on anything g you needed or asked. Services throughout were great and the weather was perfect. The pace of play was very nice, never saw the group in front of us or behind us and finished a group 4 in 3 hours 58 minutes from the Golds(one) shy of the tips (black). I definitely want to come back here again rather soon. Great overall experience. It appears the LPGA will be here exactly the following week from today play as they were setting up all over the course. Even with cart path only on all holes, walking out to the ball was not difficult on any of the holes. read more

I really enjoyed playing here! The facilities and course are pristine. I am relatively new to the game, but am coming to realize that playing on well-manicured courses results in my being able strike the ball more effectively. I have also noted that balls roll with more consistency on well-cared-for greens. I have a relatively high handicap, so pars don't normally come often, but after a wanky start, I found my rhythm and started pull down a sizable number of pars--( 7 were documented my score card by the end of the round)...and I even snagged a birdie. Two blow-up holes destroyed my over-all score, but the sinking of long putts, the hitting of balls that would soar majestically through the ether-- then abruptly check-up after landing on the greens, made up for two snow men. The staff here is exceptionally friendly. They exude a caring demeanor and as professional and supportive as one sees on T.V when characters go to play golf at posh locations. Despite being kind-of a bougie place, the staff here is down to earth and very approachable. The nervousness that I felt at being a fish out of water--scared that I might be found out as major duffer amongst the elite-- soon dissipated as I felt more than appreciated and welcomed. This is a place that elevates the game--just like the one time I got bumped up to fly in first class, "One could really get-used to this." Once out on the playing fields, I came to very much love the lay-out of the course. For my skill level (capable of playing just better than bogey golf, I found the course to be relatively challenging, but not beyond reason. Neither the course, nor I would be broken this day--we found each other to be worthy opponents. I am relatively frugal and am always looking for a deal ($40 is the average amount that I spend for public course play) so spending $90 (off season rate) was a bit of a splurge. I kinda hate to admit it, but my cheap-arse self must now begrudgingly agree with those who say that "you get what you pay for." I had a blast and when asked to share what could have been done to make my experience on the course better, there was literally not a thing that the staff could have done to make it more pleasant. Unlike Mick Jagger, I was more than satisfied. It is certain that I shall be returning to play here again, and when that day comes, I will gladly shell out my skrilla--that's a slang term for, "money" that the cool cats are using today. (*Does invisible 6-shooter thing, then holsters his imaginary guns in his jeans' front pockets in a sad attempt to be cool) Anyways, I am very much looking forward to playing here again, as it was so worth it. read more

This golf course is nestled beautifully in the dessert surrounded by mountains and blue skies. The carts look brand new. Everyone at this course is helpful & friendly. Inside, the bathrooms are spacious, clean and have everything you could need especially as a female. Our first round of golf in Arizona brought us to the Cattail course at Whirlwind Golf Club. We bought a Troon card and are choosing courses associated with that. We really liked the course. Coming from Minnesota, we were a little worried about narrow fairways and desert vegetation, however, most holes were rather forgiving. The fairways were nice and green and the rough was brown but the grass there was not very long. With the fairways being so tightly cut, it was often even a bit easier (for me) to hit from the brown areas. Not a ton of water and the sand traps were fair so I played with one ball until the last hole. The carts had GPS so it was nice to see distances and lay of the hole. There were not many blind shots so being new to the course, it was nice to know where you were headed. The twosome we were paired with were good partners, playing ready golf. We played 18 holes in just over 4 hours. Staff was friendly and helpful. Nice experience. read more

I was recently fitted for a complete set of clubs by Brandon Gordon, Head Golf Professional at Whirlwind. Brandon's knowledge and ability to figure out the best option for his customer is what puts him ahead of the game. Once fitted, my new clubs were ordered. After taking my clubs out to the course for the first time, I was amazed at the distance my new clubs were giving me. It was a HUGE issue!! I was now hitting my clubs a full 15-20 yds further with much higher ball flight. I was flying over greens into water, driving into bunkers previously not in play.. Thank you Brandon!! This past week, I shot the best round in the past decade!!! Brandon fixed my club issue, I had to fix my understanding of the new and improved distance issue!! I would highly recommend Brandon for your next fitting...just be prepared for a bit of a distance adjustment...which obviously is NOT a problem!! read more

I was greeted by one of the staff and I dropped off my bag, and helped me loading it on the golf cart. Great services. The course is in a very good condition when I was there. Perfect fairway. It was a very hot day. They put ice inside the cooler for guest to store their drinks. This is very nice of them. However, there is a big issue with bugs. There were lots of bugs when the weather started cooling down. I got beaten probably 50 time throughout my legs even though I sprayed my whole body with Off! I was so distracted by the bugs (they buzzed in my ears) in every shot. I could not focus when I hit! Please see my attached pictures (my legs were all swollen, and I have to go to CVS for medications immediately after my game). The bugs issue is so severe that I urge management to take care of it ASAP. I also saw rabbits and rats running around the golf course. Pest control is needed for this course! read more

Course is nice. Greens and fairways were in good shape. 4 stars because the course somehow can't be bothered to have anyone staffing a drink cart that circulates the course on a Friday afternoon in a town known for golf trips or have anyone drive around to clean up the trash overflowing out of the trash cans on every tee box. Course is too expensive to be that sloppy about things like that. Maybe you don't need 3 cart boys to stand around and charge up a golf cart and one of them can drive the beverage cart around or pick up trash on the course. read more

Well kept course with great views. Have played both 18's now and they both present different challenges. You get to use every club in the bag which always makes for a fun round. Friendly staff that helped us out by squeezing us in because of a miscue by my buddy who never confirmed the tee time. read more

Just got done golfing 9 and the pace of play was horrible. Would have been over a 5 hour round in the peak heat of the day. Not sure why the starter and others that monitor play pace had left already either. Wanted a rain check for 9 and the guy in the pro shop (Jason) told us no that it has to be a continuous 18. What a bunch of crap. I literally have golfed all around the world and was never denied a rain check for 9 holes. This course is not as good as it thinks it is. read more

Played both Catail and Devil's Claw. Devils Claw I liked the best of the 2. Great course conditions. Golf carts were amazing with what felt like new cushions. Staff was super friendly. I played here twice over a weekend and one day at Ocotillo and Whirlwind to me wins hands down for enjoyment and experience. read more

Finally we were able to play the Cattail course. We usually play Devil's Claw which we like. I was expecting Cattail to be a bit more difficult course because of heresy, but not to the point where I just don't like it. It was ridiculously frustrating losing balls after what would've been decent shots at other courses. The first cut of rough along each side of the fairways were so deep (although it didn't appear so at first glance), but after the balls landed in them, you had to drive on top of them to spot them. Some we couldn't find. It was ridiculous and made for an unpleasant round. The greens were kind of slow, but I can deal with that. I for one wont be playing that course anytime soon if ever! It was my most unpleasant round at any Troon course. The course looked great, but that's about it. If you usually hit your drives straight, you'll have no problem. Otherwise, bring extra balls! read more

Called the pro shop seven times and never saw one marshal I wouldn't recommend this golf course. They put way too many golfers on the golf course. read more

Ahhhh. Playing Whirlwind Cattail golf course and it was a great experience! Booked an afternoon tee time as a birthday present for a former colleague. Although everyone in our group had played Whirlwind before, this was my first experience. First, the location is very close to central Phoenix. Maybe 20-30 minutes from the airport and right off I-10 east. Use your GPS because some of the roads lead you in circles around the course. Whirlwind golf has 2 18 hole championship course managed by Troon golf. The courses are very well kept, with amenities galore. Check was a breeze, (I did mine online) and from the minute you drop your clubs off the staff is attentive and professional. Cattail was a fun course. Some undulations and smooth greens. Not sure how it will play in the heat of summer. But definitely worth a trip to play some good golf. The Resort is the Sheraton Grand and hosts some really top notch restaurants. Please swing by if you want a great day of golf in a city full of great golf courses! Or better yet, play them both! read more

I have golfed here many times. This course is on the Indian reservation which has a few hotels, casino and the outlet mall. There is a lot close by and places to stay. It sits right off I10 so it is easy to get to. The greens are medium speed, the fairways and rough are maintained on great schedule to keep any overgrowth from happening. The watering schedule is great so what should be green is green. The staff have consistently met my expectations. I have always had smiling courteous staff when I play here. I have played multiple charity scrambles here. The course staff take care of the organization putting on the events. They allow access to pretty much anything you could need. They have a conference center right by the Pro Shop so you can cater your event. Devil's Claw is a great course and will always recommend it. read more

We played here today and loved the course! It felt like you were at a Country Club. The greated you when you arrived and put your clubs in the carts. The starter and marshals were all super nice, helped out and were encouraging. The cart server was also very nice and made it to us three times. The course had great water features and was laid out perfect! The only thing is when you finish at 9 you're not at the clubhouse. read more

Disgusted. Have this chin a chance and still on the course in fact. There is an active FIVESOME that the club is allowing to claim a lesson group all playing in front of us jamming up the entire course. I wouldn't request a refund on a cheeseburger, but considering it here. Ckubhouse shouldn't get away with charging this money and getting away with this. Played Grayhawk Friday and Quintero yesterday. THIS would not happen there. read more

Whirlwind has the best staff in the valley. Andy, Drew and the rest of the staff make Whirlwind a great course to call home. Great practice facility, and the VERY BEST Jr. golf deal in the valley!!!! The golf courses are both fantastic! Challenging but fair, they reward smart shots and punish dumb ones as every course should, all while being generous to the longer hitters. Despite the overwhelming heat (new to AZ), of the courses I have played over the past few weeks this has by far been the best maintain fairways and greens. Even the bunkers had a decent amount of sand. I golfed on the Devils Claw course which I hear is easier then the Cat Tail. This blend of traditional links with desert golf is quite challenging for a +bogey golfer. Very few holes where I want to try and kill the tee shots. Better rewards for keeping it in the fairways. The deserts will keep you busy looking for your balls. The greens were well manicured and rolled true. I even got 4 pars! This was a great time to play with the heat discount. The fees included practice balls. Make sure to bring sunscreen and drink plenty of H2Ooooh! read more

Played their Devil's Claw course two days in a row. They do not move pins daily, so we played the same pins both days. They also clearly do not cut greens very frequently. The greens roll good, but are veeery slow. Fairways are so wet they are unplayable and are mostly mud. I had to take unplayable lies in the fairway on 2, 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, and 17. Very difficult even to find a place to drop. I have to believe they are killing the fairways with all the water. Bunkers were unmaintained and many had standing water. This makes the bunkers difficult to play out of. Tees are ok .. could be the only place they are watering less. It is not too enjoyable playing here. Before playing this course, i would ask the following questions: - is there grass on fairways - when is last time greens were mowed - when is last time you moved pins - when is last time bunker maintenance was done if you get poor or no answer, save your money. The one positive: the staff is very pleasant. read more

Located all the way out in the outskirts of South Chandler near the Wild Horse Pass Casino, this golf course is a nice oasis that is fun to play. The layout of the course is a modern desert course with very few trees. There's a lot of desert areas and a few traps and water hazards...perfect for the average golfer. The greens were well kept and rolled true despite having a lot of play on them. We played on a Sunday morning and there were cars running at the nearby drag strip, so all day long you could hear the engines roaring in the distance....kind of cool, for some distracting....but it didn't bother me. I've come here often and usually have great service. Today I came and the more mature woman at the bar looked right through me when I spoke to her twice. I was able to find the other guy to take my order and he provided the service I have received in the past. But again the older mature homely woman needs a course in customer service. read more

Couple of friends and I had a great time here. We played the Devils Claw course. It's well maintained, greens are fast, rough is not that bad. That's a big deal if you golf like myself. This is a desert course with sand traps and some water, not much trees. We did lose plenty of balls, so bring plenty. I personally think it's worth the price, however I understand if others do not agree. Staff are very nice, they have plenty of rentals available in case you are in town and need clubs. Their pro shop is well stocked, plenty of choices to choose from. We did not try their food. This is a course I would like to visit again, it was a lot of fun. read more

Overall a decent experience. I understand the course has been overseeded and may not be in perfect condition yet. But the bunkers are just horrible! We had the second tee time of the morning and the bunkers all looked bad. Hadn't been raked in who knows how many days. Do to Covid there are no rakes on the course but I would expect a nice Troon course like this to maintain the bunkers better. read more

Probably one of the most underrated courses in Phoenix! It's got a good range, nice pro shop staff, and the course was in great shape. Lush fairways and solidly cut greens. The track was fun to play - challenging but some score able easy holes too. It's cheaper than the Scottsdale courses and worth the drive south into Chandler to play this track! read more

130 bucks for a round and you can't finish with a 120p tee time!!! Come on! Second time this has happened here. Saw ranger twice and didn't speed anyone up. Right before he left all he could say was. "Yup we are busy" ...like he cares if we finish he's goin home! read more

Course conditions for summer are atrocious and they are still asking $66 green fee in the middle of the day. There are significantly better values and course conditions available out there. In the winter visitor season this course was in impeccable condition, though still a little overpriced. read more
