i'm about four reviews in and I'm surprised that nobody is addressing the elephant in the room. This place is absolutely haunted. I have never in my life believed in phenomenon that are manifest in any considerable way. However, I say this genuinely staying here for one night the seven that we were supposed to stay changed my and my girlfriend's life forever. it would take an entire book for me to write the experience out however, I will say that dressed in black satin robes rose from my while I was after falling asleep beside my girlfriend dress had caught on fire just prior to laying down. Oh, and there's so much more I give it five stars because it changed my life. I respect everyone who goes there. Everyone who stays there everyone who works there and everybody who will end up, enjoying even a minute there whether or not they're aware of what surrounds them . read more

A GREAT spot with local flavor!! Even during the Pandemic, they were working their azzes off! Local bands 3-4 nights or more sometimes. Forgot our stamps....again. (guess we'll have to come back!) I wished there was a little table in the bath/shower rooms to set your stuff on, or a chair perhaps. Only a towel bar and 2 hooks. And wish there was access to a coffee machine in the hallway. (Sunday mornings not open till 11am at the hotel and no coffee till 9am upstairs) This is more of a hostel with shared bathrooms. So people who are expecting a full-24 hr hotel, this is different. Fire pit area is a great place to meet people from literally all over the world. Stay warm in heat and spirit. *side note- next door is an AWESOME bagel shop with EVERYTHING. I stumbled across this jewel of a place on Yelp. It's a grand slam for me. It's a hotel above a Saloon, from 1905 I think. I checked in with the bar keep and went up stairs. It's I. It's original build with a sink in your room. The two water toilets and two showers are all separate in their own "Water Closets" down the hall. It old but everything was spic and span! Cleaner than some of the newer hotels I've stated in. After dropping my luggage in my room, I returned to the Saloon. There was a tri, Live Band on stage, Bull Mountain. The lead singer on a guitar, and backed up by a fiddle player and a Cello/ base player. I believe they are a blue grass band. They sounded great! I ordered a bowl of the Vegetable Soup. At 10:30 PM with everything closing up at 11, the soup was hot and delicious. I forget the bar keepers name but she was super friendly, and in no rush to run me out so she/they could close. This hotel might not be for everybody but it is a true highlight of places I've stayed and I have stayed in 3 dozen places this year alone. If I'm back in town this is the place I'm booking!!!! Came here for the first time to listen to Brian Ward perform. (10/10 recommend him) opening for Jamie Drake. We sat at a table, menus were left on the table. We sat figured out what we wanted to order and waited about 15min... no one said anything to us, even the staff walking. By us over and over, a girl assuming now is the food runner, kept looking at us but said nothing... so I went to the bar and asked the bartender if we were supposed to order at the bar (it is a sit down restaurant. Or appears to be). No indication we were to order at the bar.... She has dark hair, it's a Friday evening... she said "Yup". I said "ohhh makes sense but no one mentioned that to us... we have been sitting at the table for awhile... lol..." and she didn't respond at all.. not oh yea well you order here, be with you in a sec... or anything.. just silence.... Wasn't looking for an apology or anything.. I stood there for about 5min. And went back and sat down... staying until Brian is done performing and then my friend and I will absolutely not ever be back... we would leave immediately if he wasn't playing.. read more

If you can deal with this type of "hotel", they do a pretty darn good job. It is much more hostel style, which is not mentioned in the name. The rooms are absolutely tiny.. no room for dancing, but they are clean which is my the most important thing in my book. We got the last room available, which was a full sized bed with no private bathroom (I think all of the rooms are set up like this). There are two bathrooms located down the hall. They were clean, but it was a super weird setup. We were told that this is considered "European style". I tried not to think about it too much, but this building is extremely old and historical. It was most definitely a bit creepy, and many people that we ran into mentioned that it is known to be haunted. This made the experience exciting. Overall, the main reason I give a high rating is the very affordable nightly rate. ($70) we were aching for air conditioning which was my only complaint. in the middle of the night, it had to have been over 80 degrees in our room! read more

Its a good deal it just happens to be fairly far away from things. White Eagle is supposedly haunted and it certainly has that rural old, creaky building feel. We had the "Mr. Spaceman" room at it includes a small mirror and sink in the room and a heater. The bed was clean and so was the room. If you've ever been in the old UC dorm rooms then you know about what to expect. Check-in and check-out is with the cashier at the bar. They just have you sign some forms, swipe your card, and then you take your luggage up the stair case outside of the building. Tip: If you're checking in at night, the saloon is rocking so I would recommend having one person with the luggage wait in the lobby while the other person wades through the crowds of people to check in. It's cramped otherwise. PROS: - affordable and probably the lowest rates you'll find out of the McMenamins hotels. - close to Toro Bravo and literally next door to the Widmer Brothers Brewing company (free brewery tours = free beer!) - White Eagle Saloon serves food and drink you can bring up to your room. Or you can spend the evening checking out the local music acts. CONS: - Thin walls. They warn you and apologize for it but its still loud at night given the live music at the saloon. Not unbearable but still noticeable until about 12am. - Dorm-like conditions so you'll be going down the hall for all shared bathroom trips. - Location is fairly distant from downtown Portland. For the price (well under $100/night), it is a fairly nice and clean place that gets the job done. Though, I'd try another McMenamin's hotel next time! read more

I stayed here one night, just a place to crash while I was in town for a show and a it's a McMenamins I had yet to stay at. The old building has been nicely restored, a lot of original woodwork, it looks like. First floor bar and music venue, second floor rooms (shared bath down the hall). Obviously, don't stay here if you need silence to sleep. Outdoor patio with fire pit is great. I can't speak to the bar or food as I did not go to either. Well, when you check in for the hotel you do so AT the bar, which is interesting. I had to wait a strangely long time at the bar to check into my room...I was told by the bartender that the "managers are in a meeting" and I had to wait until that was over. Apparently. But, the hotel is classic McMenamins: funky, old but fixed up well, younger crowd, playful atmosphere. ROOM: Very comfy bed. Almost perfect for one person staying one night. It had a sink and towels and shampoo, etc. (If there had not been I'd not have stayed, but I saw that in advance online). If you can brush your teeth & wash your face it's all good for one night. Earplugs in the bedside drawer (live music downstairs at night). Wall heater. Window. What made it less than perfect is two things: 1. There is nowhere to set your sink stuff (see picture)- no counter space. I moved a chair over next to the sink to use as a counter. 2. The floors were not clean. I'm bringing slippers next time, it was a little uncomfortable. In the morning, in the hotel hall, there is hot coffee sitting out. Nice. BATHROOMS: Bathrooms are down the hall. It was just myself and I knew I would be out late that night, so not having a bathroom in the room was no big deal. That said, they were very clean and I rarely saw anyone there. The showers are in one area and toilets in another. There's more than one of both. The toilets have hand sanitizers. Special needs note: No elevator and rooms are on second floor. read more

Don't let this be your only Mcmenamins hotel experience. The rooms are cramped, the european style bathrooms even smaller and the staff (although friendly) are overworked and understaffed to do much for you. I'll also mention that with the european style bathrooms at the other properties you are supplied a nice bathroobe, that isn't the case here. So a quick shower in the morning involves getting on enough clothes to be seen by a fellow guest, bringing your change of clothes to the cramped shower (that has no place to put your change of clothes) getting showered then getting dressed in your now damp clean clothes. The loud music from the concerts downstairs doesn't bother me. That is what the property is all about. Dan read more

I get the desire to stay true to the roots of this old run down building. For things like coffee should be mandatory offerings in the morning. I also personally find the whole shared toilet thing super awkward, exotically because it's directly above a bar. Everyone staying there was drunk. The sanitation level was low....to say the least. This review is strictly based on the saloon food. My friend and I decided since we were nearby we would give this location a try. I really felt like a hamburger and figure I could count on McMenamins to provide me with my favorite - a dungeon burger. It was meh...my friends meal was ok but pretty greasy seeming - she tried a different burger than mine. We were very happy with our happy hour tots without cajun seasoning (yep, we are crazy people). The service was most excellent in a big way too and we had a great time thanks to feeling left alone. I mean that there were several folks in there but the sound (or lack of) did not make us feel like we had them parked at our table and such. Sometimes in old buildings which have been converted to restaurants you get echoes reminding you how old the space is which you try to be forgiving of no matter how annoying it is....this is not the case here. First, let me say that I love McMenamins, am a Cosmic Tripster, and have stayed at all of their hotels. I like having the bar downstairs, although you do have to wait to go to sleep until the. And is through. The 3 star rating is a result of what I was told by staff versus reality. You have common toilets. Nothing wrong with that at all. Consider the age of the hotel and smile. But this is no longer the norm, so we seldom travel with robes. The other McMenamins Hotels give you a terry cloth bathrobe which is comfortable, and makes it all work. Alas, not here. When I asked, I was told it was because there wasn't a soaking pool. That is BS. The Olympic Hotel doesn't have a soaking pool. Neither does Hotel Oregon. But both have common bathrooms; and both provide robes. Guys, if you don't, then an old guy like me must get up, pull on trousers, pull on a tee shirt, just to go to the toilet. It takes some of the pleasure of the stay away. Let's catch up with the rest of the McMenamins Hotels, and cut your trawlers some slack and provide robes! read more

An insane deal! I spend so little time in a hotel room that it's hard to justify spending $100+ a night. White Eagle is perfect for me. First, it's definitely a boarding house environment. You've got shared bathrooms, which are clean and noisy neighbors (which you won't care about it because you'll be hearing live music until midnight every night). They provide ear plugs if the noise gets on your nerves -- also you can request a room that's not directly above the stage (unfortunately, ours was). If you're in your room before the music stops, grab some beers from the bar, bring them up to your room and weather the storm. If you don't mind not getting to bed before 12:30am and don't want to spend a lot on a hotel room you barely use, I highly recommend the White Eagle. read more

Overall, it's underpriced for Portland, but overpriced for the quality. The overall style of the hotel is beautiful, old, and interesting. The beer is great. The attendants are very helpful. However, the hotel has not been kept up well so it looks dirty. It felt gross just to take my shoes off in our room. The noise from the bar isn't too bad, but the walls are thin. It was very loud when people would talk and walk in the hallways. Bed is lumpy. Between the noise and the bed, I woke up every 30-60 minutes. Room smells like old grandma perfume. I'm fine with communal bathrooms, but these are disgusting. There aren't even sinks in the bathrooms, only hand sanitizer. It all feels very close to camping or sleeping in a dorm. The rooms are tiny. The photos on the website make them look much bigger than they actually are. On top of all of these things, the location isn't really close to anything. We stayed for one night, and it was hard to imagine staying any longer. read more

If you want a cheap place to stay, this is a great option ($62 tax included for a full bed). It's clean, they provide towels and toiletries, and it's about a block away from the train stop that takes you into the city(10 minute ride). My first night there was great and I could hear a live acoustic show downstairs which was kinda nice and not too loud. I don't mind noise at night, but on my second night I learned that I have a cap on that. My room(#7) was right over the stage and I could FEEL the great show downstairs. Unfortunately I needed to sleep for an interview the next day and wasn't able to do so until about 1am. I wanted to bash my head on the wall when I heard "Encore! Encore!" from the crowd. My ex-boyfriend also complained about the chemical smell in the room but I was too busy bawling over the breakup to notice. I took a wiff in the morning and everything seemed fine. I'm also not a risk-averse paranoid hypochondriac, so... If you're in town for fun and stay out late or watch their show you'll be fine. The staff is really friendly and are willing to store your luggage until your check in time. I'll probably never come back to Portland, but if for some terrible reason I need to visit that city I'd probably book them again. read more

This review is strictly on the hotel. Came here on a Thursday evening before a show were going to. Checked in at the restaurant... not a big deal, just kinda awkward standing near the bar with our bags surrounded by people eating and drinking. The man who checked us in was very polite and explained a few things: * It IS a rock and roll hotel, so bands will be playing up until 11:45ish but possibly midnight. This wasn't a deal breaker... we would be out late anyway. * After 2am, there is no staff in the buildilng. If you happen to lock yourself out of your room, there's a phone in the hallway where you call the school (school!?) and someone there will then call a hotel staff (who has to wake up) then come let us in. So be sure to NEVER forget your key. Only thing is, the phone is INSIDE the building... if you happen to get stuck outside, not sure who you call.... Those things I can handle... but once we got to our room my wife and I were in for a surprise. * The rooms have no bathrooms! It's a tiny room with a full-sized bed and a sink in the corner with a mirror.... this was the deal breaker. * There's a community shower/bathroom next to the stairs, I peeked in to see a tiny shower but couldn't find the light switch... * It's a very old buildilng with a long narrow staircase leadding to a long narrow hallway... reminded me of a screne from The Shining. We were in the room for literally less than 2-minutes, walked back down and let the staff knew we wouldn't be staying... he apologized for any inconvience and told us to call the next day to speak with the manager regarding how we'd be charged. I called back expecting to be charged for at least a "late-cancellation fee" but the same man picked up the phone, told me the manager left but he talked to him about what happened and they won't be charging me... they get an extra star for that ;) read more

Sabrina H. and I headed here before a Blazers game. We were originally going to go to Winderemer but the line was crazy, and the parking spot we found was directly in front of White Eagle, so we decided to wander in. The mood is very McMenamins! The beer (Ruby - of course) was delcious. I rarely (like every few years) get a burger at a restaurant, mainly because I cannot/will not eat meat that is pink! The chef that night did an AWESOME job on my no pink/very well done burger, I was happy. The fries were their usually greasy (delcious) selves. For 12 dollards we had a burger and beer before the game, rode the MAX one stop to the Rose Garden and it worked out great. We didn't have to pay for parking though we did have to pay for the MAX ride - $2 each way per person. Well, we didn't realize we needed to pay on the way there...whoops!! This is one of the humbler Mcmenamins hotels, but if you go in knowing that, it has its charms. Yes, it's loud, with smaller rooms and shared bathrooms. Don't bring your parents here. But sleeping right on top of a bar is a cool experience, and if you're planning on staying out late anyway, it's fun to roll into the hotel and continue the party or get late night grinds. And the live music is great! If you have scheduling flexibility, check out the show calendar before you book. There's a good variety of options so you'll find something you'll like. read more

A spotlessly clean boarding house in a great location. If the music from downstairs bother you, stay at the bar and close it down! That's what we did... One more thing. Awesome. This place rules. I spent a few night here in 09' and had a great stay. Live music downstairs just about everynight of the week, so if your not into that this place may not be for you. Super easy access to free Portland public transportation and within walking distance of downtown as well. After spending a few nights here, my girlfriend and I made our way to Troutdale, about 15 miles east, and the Edgefield just to stay at another Mcmenamins! If you are into staying at historic or just plain interesting places, then the McMenamins spots will not fail you. They did me no wrong. read more

When booking our room it was fast and friendly and done by calling the Mcmenamins Edgefield Hotel as they handle the check in for the White Eagle Hotel. We always try to get to Hotels early in the day to maximize our stay and time together. I did not read that on Sundays there was nobody in the bar available for check in until 4pm. We arrived at 3pm to find the building locked so we went and grabbed a bite to eat and came back about 4:15 to check in. We were greeted warmly by the manager who promptly checked us in and explained all the rules specifically that after 11pm we are on our own in the Hotel as they close the bar and go home. When I asked about a late check out she stated they are very easy going and to just let them know we needed a late check out. She let us know that she was putting us in the best room, as we headed up the stairs and came to the landing we found our room quickly it was facing the 405 Bridge North facing. We had a chance to look at all the rooms as the maids were just finishing up and there are only 11 rooms, indeed room 1 is the nicest brightest. The rooms are only about 10ft by 12ft room enough for the bed a sink a table and our stuff. We did bring a cooler to keep our drinks cold as they do not provide refrigerators. Also as in all Mcmenamins, there are no TV's microwaves etc. The 2 bathrooms and 2 showers were a short walk down the hall and we found the shower to be large and roomy. We showered up and headed to our concert venue up the road at Wonderballroom. Upon return to the Hotel that evening around 11:30pm we were in fact the only guests and the only people in the Hotel. We slept good and comfortable until about 6am as the hotel is located in a industrial area and it was a Monday morning we woke to the sounds of trucks, trucks and trucks with bad brakes. When we got out of bed around 10am we found coffee waiting for us on a table. I headed downstairs to ask for a late check out and the individual was very taken back and acted odd that I would ask the agreed to give us until 12:30pm. We showered packed and were almost ready to leave when exactly at 12:30pm there came a knock on the door it was a person from the bar stating we needed to pack up. This is the only reason I am giving the Hotel a 3 and not a 4 as 15 minutes later another knock came and we were asked once again to leave the room. The only reason we were still In the room as we were taking the linens off the bed and making sure the room was clean, we felt it to be a bit rude to push us out of the hotel just because they wanted to clean up the room. We would stay here again and at any Mcmenamins Hotel we just enjoy checking out a little later especially with 10 Children. read more

We had a great stay here over our spring break holiday! The hotel is above the saloon but we really did not hear much noise coming from the downstairs. This could be because we visited during time of COVID but the saloon was open. The bedroom was small but very clean. The bathrooms and showers are shared spaces and are located in the hallway but this also was not a problem for us. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and they provided sanitizing materials if you wanted to sanitize the space before doing your business. The bed was very comfortable and the hotel itself well decorated and true to its roots! We highly recommend staying here as long as you don't mind shared spaces! read more

Remind me to tell you about the ghost. As for the property, it's typical McMenamins, minus some amenities. The hotel has 11 rooms, with two shared showers and toilets. The rooms do NOT come with robes, so you'll have to cover up on your way to the shower. There is no A/C. The rooms are directly over the bars/lounge. Apparently there is nightly music. During our stay it was open mic night for local rappers/hip hop artists. Even though we stayed in room 3 (haunted btw) we could still hear the thumping of the music until approximately 12:00am. Rooms come with foam ear plugs. Now, I was warned that this place was haunted. Paid no mind and blew it off. However, because of the noise and heat I put the ear plugs in, and placed the box fan in the window. During the night, after the music had stopped I could make out "noises" and feel movement from underneath the bed. I played it off to be the folks downstairs rearranging the bar after the performance. Then, at 5:40am, I thought my wife had placed her arm under my pillow and was moving around. I felt two distinct taps on my pillow from near the headboard. I sat up and noticed my wife was sleeping on her back with her hands at her sides. No longer a skeptic, I picked up the pillow to see if there was anything underneath...there was not. After about 15 minutes, I laid back down to fall asleep. At that moment I felt the bed shake as if my wife had rolled over. Of course I was facing her now and it certainly wasn't her. Then, once again, there was movement under my pillow and one final tap. So, all in all, this hotel is a steal for Portland. It was easily $150 cheaper to stay here per night than the surrounding chains. The place is clean, the beds are ok, but 3 stars due to lack of amenities and nightly noise. read more

My friend and I stumbled upon the white eagle hotel after a string of recommendations from locals on activities and places to visit the night we were in Portland! This place is such a historic gem! We stayed in one of the bunk bed rooms and it was luckily right next door to the bathrooms (which are separate, dorm style I guess!) I felt like I had gone back in time, loads of charm! I wish my friend and I would have been staying in town longer! Sidenote: no air conditioning , room had a large windows and box fan which help, I personally felt like it added that extra charm to the stay! read more

On a one night stay in Portland I chose to stay at yet another wonderful McMenamins location cause these guys know how to do it right! Now I do have to say I was a little worried as this was my first experience with a "shared bahtroom" hotel but I actually lucked out and got room #10 which was right next to the bathroom, not that any are really too far away. Another awesome old perfectly restored building got a good nights rest and coffee was waiting upstairs first thing in the morning. For the 85 bucks i spent on the room I would gladly come back to visit soon. Entire hotel was clean, bed was comfy, decor was not my taste but well done and unique none the less. read more

We were down from Seattle for a couple nights and stopped over at the White Eagle on a Sunday night. We were absolutely thrilled to see a cool band playing and get to learn a bit about this historic property. It's so cool, definitely has a vibe, lacked pretense, and has a beautiful fire pit outside where we spent time chilling and talking with some nice, funny White Eagle staff just off their shift. I've been to other Mcmenamins, the Crystal Ballroom, the pub in St. Johns, the Kennedy School, but the White Eagle is a bar apart. We'll definitely be back soon and would love to stay in their inn next time we're in PDX. read more

I spent one night March 2, 2014. It was nice room. I have heard that there could be hauntings there. There was a hint of cigar smell in my room. I figured that room one was a gentleman smoking room back in the day. I was in room one. The music was lively. The employees seemed distracted. I always love the food at all the mcmenamins. The art and how mcmenamins are in general. I recommend staying hear. I did get some pics with orbs in them. Could be a ghost or not you be the judge. read more

We stayed at the WE after hearing it was cheap and haunted, 2 of my favorite things in life (or death, as the case may be). it was $55 a night for our room which was right above the front door. i read the accounts of hauntings there, and esp in room 2/Sam's room, so when the 'innkeeper' (bartender) handed me my room key card with '2' on it i was so excited!!! nothing happened on our 3 nights there, but we had a great time anyway. very simple room with a queen bed, 2 nightstands, a sink with a mirror, and a little table by the window with a sitting chair. all very tasteful and clean and looked right outta the 30's or whenever this place was in its hayday as a brothel or however the story goes. the bed was comfy, the water was hot. the showers and toilets are down the hall, but i never had to wait for either. there is a bar downstairs and they have live music i think every night. but it ends before 11 i think weekdays, and 12 on weekends- and you should be out soaking up Portland nightlife anyway, so it shouldnt bother you! we actually did hit they hay early one night, but it sounded like a distant party, and not the thud of a bass and yelling or anything- so it was fine. its walking distance to a few other bars, but downtown is only a trolley (a block away) or a few minute drive away. and they have a parking lot. it was a great, no frills crash pad. not full of amenities like hair dryers and such, but that would diminish its old timey charm. would definitely stay again! read more

It's pretty hard to get better than the White Eagle if you're staying for a few days in Portland. Why? Because a) it's less than a block from a metro stop (the MAX takes you up and down the west side of the river and into downtown), b) it's attached to a cool bar/restaurant/music venue and c) it's incredibly charming! The bathrooms are communal (showers and toilet rooms are separate from each other, while the sinks are in each bedroom) but CLEAN! For $55 + tax for a single full-size bed, my friend and I were in heavennnnnnnn - and got to experience Portland affordably! Thank you, McMenamins! read more

White Eagle is awesome!!!!! Unfortunately we were just in for the day (from Seattle) and wasn't able to stay for a night show, so we went during the mid-afternoon for their happy hour. Ordered the obligatory pint of Ruby Red and a serving of hummus and pita, which DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! And can I just add on that even though the place was pretty scarce on a Tuesday during the mid-afternoon happy hour, the service was TOP NOTCH. So if you want a chill, quiet McMenamin's place to go to for happy hour to have some QT time with your quality person to grab a beer or two, then this is the place to be. :) Most Definitely. read more

This was the perfect option when staying in Portland on a recent road trip. We didn't want to drop a bunch of cash, but also wanted somewhere funky. We'd stayed at another McMenamins in the past (Hotel Oregon) and had a great experience, so were thrilled when the White Eagle had a room available. We got in kind of late when the live music downstairs (which they feature every night and is free to guests) was just ending, but the woman who checked us in had no problem serving up some happy hour beers and $2 munchies. We sat out on the adorable patio and had a great evening. The hotel is within walking distance to another brewery (which was a bonus when originally booking), but they also serve up their own beers if you just want to chill there. For $70 you get an individualized room- ours had lyrics about a boy with long hair (too fitting) whimsically painted on the walls, and the room also comes with a sink. The bathrooms are down the hall, but are private and not group bathrooms. The showers are in a different area down the hall separate from the toilet. If you want a unique hotel experience when you're in Portland for a reasonable price- this is your stop! read more

Price was great, but found the rooms poorly ventilated and stuffy. It was an uncomfortable sleep during this warm summer.

We needed a room on short notice as we ended up in Portland a day early. Thankfully, we found the White Eagle! Cheap, clean rooms, clean bathrooms, fun atmosphere, etc. They let us all pile into one room so we didn't have to pay extra for another bed, which was great! The saloon downstairs had an awesome bluegrass band that night, though it was a little hard to get to sleep before the band finished (something that we were warned of before booking the room). I would definitely stay at the White Eagle again over the Hawthorne Hostel where we felt like a nuisance to the staff for just being there. read more
