We were in town for a concert weekend and looking for somewhere fun to kick off Friday night--this place delivered. The brewery is huge, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space plus some outdoor games, which made it easy to spread out even though it was pretty packed. It never felt uncomfortably crowded, which says a lot. The night we went, they had live music with several artists performing, and for a $10 cover, it was absolutely worth it--everyone we saw was pretty good. Service was good, the vibe was lively but not chaotic, and it's the kind of spot you can hang out for hours without feeling rushed. If I'm back in the area, I'd definitely return. read more

A must go for me when I'm in the Charlottesville area. I love the space here and how many seating areas there are, indoor and outside. This place is fun for a day visit or at night! They typically have live music at night or sometimes a DJ. They have a variety of food trunks typically as well as in house food. We enjoyed oysters from a pop up stand this past time. After coming from an engagement surprise party, a large part of our gathering ventured into this place. I was in the sun for a while and was really hurting for some water. This place has everything we needed: a fenced-in playground for the kids (good for our 6 grandkids aged 7 & under!) , a good-enough, bar-food-style menu for all, lots of space for kids to roam relatively safely (watch your kids near the driveway that slices through the outdoor space), a good menu of ales (although my favorite heffeweiser was not available) & ciders, live music (too loud for us to eat indoors, but more than enough picnic tables for our crew outdoors), & big tub of candy sitting on the bar. Great place to stop for a drink! I built my own flight and loved the choice to sample so many beers, ciders, and seltzers. I probably won't try the blue raspberry again, but how fun to have the option! I also like the atmosphere here, a great view of the mountains and lots of outdoor games and picnic tables. The staff are really great, even coming around the bar to play with my very-welcomed dog and bring him his own water dish. The food is operated by Dinos (same as the pizza at the Dairy Market in C'vile, for my locals), and has a good selection of options. I've also seen food trucks around in the past. There was a food truck on site so we wanted to try the offerings to go with my Hazy Skyline IPA and my wife's Don Juan cocktail. I ordered the pulled pork with apple slaw, pickle and moonshine bbq sauce. My wife ordered the smash burger with American cheese, tomato and aioli sauce. She said the burger was ok, but not something she would order again. My pulled pork came out a few minutes after the rest of the meal and the bottom bun was completely soggy! The drinks were spot on and we decided when we go back we are going to try one of the Pro Re Nata pizzas. If you're going to a microbrewery, the beer better be good. Theirs is. I highly recommend the Pilsner. Quick service, and you can sample whatever is on tap. Mail room is perfect for live music and dancing, and it has expansive outdoor areas. They have food available, and it is quite satisfactory. Solid chicken wings, good quesadillas, personal pizzas, other goodies. Proper French fries. Great for very large groups if you come mid day (office parties). read more

We really enjoyed this place when it first opened several years ago. But the owners have expanded it tremendously and made a concerted effort to market to the parents with kids crowd. What used to be a nice place to grab a beer and sit with friends is now a huge space filled with kids running around. The noise can be deafening. The parking lot has been moved from the side to the back and there are kids running all over between the brewery building and the playground. The entry to the parking lot runs between the two spaces, making it a dangerous area when, as it often is, it's filled with kids being ignored by their parents. If you want a place to take your kids and relax, this is absolutely the right place for you. The beer is fine. The food is ok. The ice cream is overpriced, but good. Nothing wrong with the basics, as long as you don't mind dodging kids and listening to their screams. I get it, PRN is aiming for a market that I'm not part of -- and that's its perogative. Have come here many times to watch friends perform and just enjoy nice weather. The live music inside can be VERY loud to the point you can't have conversation, so if you're hoping to chat while listening to music, maybe sit outside because the music will still carry out there. Came here one Tuesday evening with co-workers for a few drinks and to watch karaoke. I was surprised by the amount of amazing talent that was there and also by the fact that nearly everyone there decided to sign up to sing! They're all mostly locals who know each other, which was great for those of us just there for the show, as they let loose and had a great time. Unfortunately, we were not impressed by a long shot. Lots of reviews give them high marks for food and service, but we were more interested in the "brewery" and its beer. We ordered the flights to test them out. Most were thin and with little body. Only one IPA had an aroma and slight depth: The Hazy. On the other end, the new Oktoberfest was very light and not what people that have experience with this style would be impressed. The Baker Street Brown was acceptable with a slightly discernable taste and body. These two; the hazy and brown were the only ones, that if we returned, would order. Hopefully, they will up their game in the future and their brew master will create some brews that will make some, even novice, beer connoisseurs go out of their way to come to this brewery and try. read more

The place is very welcoming, I saw a lot of families with young children playing. I did not know a brewery could be so welcoming! The food was made relatively quickly, I understand that it might have taken just a tad longer given the small kitchen and number of customers. When the food did come out, my hungry group devoured their pizza and wings. The drinks were appreciated by the whole group I went with; all were pleased. The only issue I experienced was that in the chilly fall day, all the windows and wide doors were open keeping the temperature down. This could be fixed by dressing a little more heavily so I wouldn't kick this place for it, especially when everyone there looked to be enjoying themselves! read more

We were cruising for a brewsing and discovered this taproom and brewery in Crozet, Va. Pro Re Nata has a decent craft beer selection but I was turned off by the snarky bar tender and his sarcastic remarks. Dude, here's a tip: not a good way to get tips! Maybe take two chill pills as needed and call me in the morning. The venue has an industrial vibe in a cool open floor plan with a stage for live music, which is a plus! The sliding barn doors on the restrooms add a neat rustic touch to the otherwise metallic atmosphere. Lots of metal high top tables and chairs with a view of the steel barrels, a tv sitting area and picnic tables outside to provide plenty of casual seating. Outside is also a food truck, Gryffon's, which had slow service and expensive shrimp... pass... but we had fun playing games on the picnic tables while sipping our Pre-Med Pils and Deep Beans Coffee Stout. The parking lot has charging stations for hybrid vehicles which was pretty cool. In the back of the property there were these neat old boxcars where people can chill and play corn hole. I feel like this brewery has potential but it slightly misses the mark. One other touchy subject: I like dogs! This place is dog friendly! Again, I like dogs! But there were so many critters here and some of the owners weren't paying attention to their pups and I literally tripped over a precious Lab wandering from its leash. We arrived at Pro Re Nata on a weekday afternoon, during a serious monsoon, so it was no surprise to only see a couple other souls there. It is dark and definitely "industrial," as its a warehouse with all the brewing equipment in view. Kinda cool, but fairly typical of a microbrewery, so not much to offer there. The outdoor space looks amazing and spacious behind the main brewery area, between some shipping containers with outdoor games and adirondack chairs and string lights. Due to the rain, we couldn't enjoy, but that is one definite reason we hope to be back. In my flight of 4 I got the: Claudius Crozet Cream Ale: Not what I expected from a Cream Ale; I'm probably ignorant of what that style of beer actually means, but I expected creamy, and it wasn't. They call it their easy-drinker though, and it was that. Would do again on a warm afternoon outside. Pavlov's Bell-Gian Ale: A good wheaty beer, and I definitely got a nice apricot hint. 2017 Anniversary Ale (Barleywine aged in apple brandy barrels!): Whew that was pretty intense, but that's barleywine for you. Really good. Flavorful and rich. Definitely enjoyable in smaller doses. Not a session, that's for sure. 2018 Anniversary Ale (Peach Brandy aged sour wit): Maybe not great to follow after the barleywine, but I love sour beers, they're my jam. This one kind of had a chardonnay taste to it, I guess the oakiness from the brandy barrels. Tasty, but not my fave ever. Staff was friendly and even when my son accidentally smashed a taster glass by knocking it on the floor, they were all smiles and no worries. Only giving four stars for now, because the interior experience wasn't super comfortable or interesting, but looking forward to return and enjoy a hopefully 5 star outdoor experience this spring/summer! read more

We had spent a whole, cool, misty, rainy weekday driving down Skyline Drive in nearby Shenandoah National Park - experiencing the tapestry of colors that is Autumn in the Appalachians. We exited the park at the southern entrance and made our way over to Pro Re Nata for an ale tasting! I experienced two tasting flights comprised of the following ales: Pre-Med Pils (3.4% ABV) Doctor's Orders Lager (4.5% ABV) Claudius Crozet Cream Ale (4.8% ABV) Pavlov's Bell-Gian Ale (6.0% ABV) Beans Deep Coffee Stout (4.6% ABV) Old Trail Pale Ale (5.2% ABV) Hop Drone IPA (6.5% ABV) 2018 Peach Brandy Aged Sour Wit Anniversary Ale (7.1% ABV) Buddha Kind TIPA (10.0% ABV) Hazing To Remember IPA (5.5% ABV) South of Border Porter (6.2% ABV) I enjoyed most of the brews!
