I had a great time enjoying a glass of wine and reading my book with my best friend here on Saturday. I had been to this vineyard once years ago and remember really loving the tasting we got and the views. We came back for some wine and to explore the ruins. We really wanted to sit outside and were told they weren't doing outside service and that we had to go to the barn corner for outdoor seating. We bought a bottle of their tasty and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. It was way too loud at the outdoor seating by their barn, so we tried to sit on their library patio. Turns out they were still serving on the patio. This was a bit of an upsetting miscommunication, but the server was sweet and told us we could stay, but had to sit further down. I didn't like feeling like we weren't allowed to be somewhere so this slightly marred the experience. However, once we settled in, I really enjoyed reading with a glass of wine and pretty views. Exploring the ruins after was pretty fun too. I wish they had a little more history on a plaque nearby. There was a sign that just said it was the governor's home that burned down on Christmas day. Ignoring the weird seating, we had a great vineyard afternoon here. read more

The service was amazing. I ended up buying a case and the lady behind the counter was very kind and carried it to the car for me. The people behind the bar for the tasting were very nice to talk to as well. The wines were great. I loved the Vermentino in particular but their Viognier is also one of the better ones I've had in Virginia. Their reds were decent nothing that blew my mind but all very nice. The tasting experience is well priced and I would definitely recommend. I ended up having a cheese board in the library which was well worth the cost. Absolutely love this place! Beautiful winery nested away, while pulling up I thought I was going to someone's house. It has outdoor seating where you can soak up the rays from the sun and plenty of indoor seating. I absolutely loved the vibe. The tastings and wine bottles weren't a bad price either. Just by looking at the sheer amount of different combinations of wine tasting combinations you can have will make you drunk. Just kidding, though they do have an extensive list of wine tasting options. They even have a separate Library where you can only do certain tastings in. In their Discovery Room, you have different tastings for different palettes. I went with the taste of Reserve Reds and the taste of whites and was guided to a back section where there isn't seating but instead it's like booth style where you taste one or two at one booth section and then make your way down the line, even sometimes switching to a different assistant. My favorite was the Cabernet Sauvignon reserve 2021and the Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022. My taste tend to be on the dryer end but these had good flavors. Highly suggest the tastings to figure out what are you favorites. The tastings weren't too large, so you don't have to worry about getting drunk off the tasting and despite me ordering two tastings. I'll definitely be back whenever I make my way through to Charlottesville. Especially since I want try their Library room and the tastings there. Those has a lot of delicious pairings that you could pick and choose from, so I'll have drag my friends with me next time. read more

Such a beautiful spot to get wine and enjoy the view. We went here and the wine flights were all good and we ordered a cheese and meat platter. It went well with the wine. Not to mention the service was so lovely. I had a toddler and they gave the toddler a nice snack bowl and a fun sticker book to keep her entertained. I want to go back! read more

Representing 2019 for the letter B, B is for Barboursville Vineyards! This place was outstanding on a visit to Charlottesville, this was on the way, in August 2019. My girlfriend & I at the time did a wine tasting, which was excellent. The grounds here are a beautiful setting, possibly the best winery I've ever been to. Staff was nice for the wine tasting explaining the different wines we were trying. We looked around the vineyards on our own, saw this cool abandoned building or monument, and saw where they store some of the barrels of wine in a chilly room. Overall, a great experience here. WOW! I've been wanting to come to this winery for years and finally made it out here! It was a long drive, but well worth it. I've tasted their wines at many wine festivals years ago and always bought bottles of the Phileo (dessert wine). Unfortunately, they don't sell this particular wine in stores in Northern Virginia (although they do sell other wines)...which Is why I needed to make my way down here. As soon as I walked in, the lovely staff were there to greet, even while putting up Christmas decoration. There were different places to enjoy their wine--the tasting room, Library 1821, Palladio restuarant, outside (umbrellas available at each table), the patio. Tasting room and Library 1821 are exquisite and cozy rooms, beautifully decorated with tables ready for seating. I didn't peek into the restaurant, but I did enjoy a bottle outside in the windy cold weather and wandered into the Library 1821 for a tasting in front of the warm fireplace. The tasting included 6 wines of our choice, some of which were older selections of their wines. The pour itself wasn't much considering it was $30/person...probably better off just buying a couple bottles. It was an experience though. I ended up buying the Viogner and Phileo--both of which I've tasted and enjoyed in the past. They allow outside food to be consumed at the outdoor seating area. I called ahead of time to confirm before bringing my food. Otherwise they do have the restuarant or the regular winery foods for sale. There is lodging available for a hefty rate, but we opted to stay at a nearby hotel. I'm not sure exactly what is included, but details are provided on their site. Plenty of parking is available. I uploaded a lot of pictures just to capture my experience here as it was so far and I'm not sure if/when I'll return. I visited on a Thursday morning, so there was hardly anyone there. Went here on a whim after visiting the Montpelier. My wife heard a lot about Barboursville wines and was determined to go. I'm glad we went. Their wine samples and options were quite nice. For their samples, we did the top flight samples and it gave us a lot to work with. If you ask for it, they have a background sheet on all the different wines. The sheet talks about the rainfall, overall climate conditions, and other nuances from the particular year. It's so much fun tasting the different wines and sampling the unique characteristics from the events. Our waitress was exceptionally friendly and made our experience very enjoyable. We could tell the first man to help us with the whites had been there some time, and was very knowledgeable! The lady that helped us with the reds seemed to be new, but again, everyone was so kind, we didn't care! We then popped over to have a bottle of wine, focaccia, and charcuterie, while enjoying the spectacular views! Cannot rave about this one enough; we will 100% make the drive from DC to C'Ville just to come here again. We bought several bottles of the Sangiovese, Cab Sauv, and Cab Franc Reserve. Tenth stop on our wine tasting weekend: Saturday 4:45pm. Barboursville is one of our staples on wine tasting trips to C'Ville. Luca, the winemaker, is one of the godfathers of VA winemaking. He makes some damn fine wines for decent prices ($17-40), many around $20-25. Their Chardonnay and Barbera are standouts for me. Oh, and they took out their enomatic wine machines and went back to live wine pourers. That was a welcome improvement. The current wine tasting is 12 wines for $20, $25 with the glass. We will keep coming back. We usually take advantage of the discount for multi-bottle purchases (see photos). read more

When you think that just 40 years ago Virginia wines were virtually nonexistent 'yuck' wines, Barboursville Vineyards came along (1976ish) and changed VA wine culture drastically and has bettered VA wines. Nice landscape with plenty of Vines to see. For east coast wines, perhaps the best dry red wines you can find. We flighted the reds and really enjoyed njoyed them all. Depth, long finish, fruity, there's a reason the Monticello AVA is ranked the best up and coming AVA. The restaurant you'll need reservations for, the library (wine and a bit of kitchen creations) is open but gets crowded. There's an outdoor area that will have what you want too. Go and visit. It's a must for the wine lover in you. read more

It really was nice. But with caveats. It's a nice place, very picturesque. They have wines that I'm sure some people love. The food, especially their charcuterie, was very good, But: It's very "commercial". This doesn't give off a winery that's a labor of love by the owners and staff. It's the Longhorn Steakhouse of wineries. Will you get a good steak? Yes. Do you feel like a number? Yes. Reservations for tastings is a big turn off. Now they weren't busy and they accommodated us, but had they been... you know if you're a wine person that places get busy and you just might need to get a flight and sit down rather than a 1 on 1 experience, that's life. But reservations, and then you're just waited on? Not my thing. For example, Trump and Hazy Mountain are very big busy and commercial, but both are somehow more inviting, probably because of the lack of needing reservations. Additionally, the wine is good, drinkable wine. They feel VERY proud of it and the prices reflect that. There's a lot of Gold and Silver Governors cup wines out there that aren't $60+ a bottle. Everything here is a "reserve". Again, very commercial seeming, and they're for the most part blends, whereas I'm more of a grape makes the wine, not wine has various medleys of grapes in it taster. I'm sure lots of people will love it here, personally, I preferred the little place at the end of the driveway, about 678 feet if I don't miss my mark. read more

I stopped in yesterday to try some wine and was really disappointed by the reception I received. The first woman I spoke to came across a bit snooty and impatient once she learned I wasn't interested in the guided fixed tasting. She directed me to the library, where I could select wines I'd like to taste. I was seated and given a wine menu, and when I asked the server about the wines, she replied that all the tasting notes were on the menu. When I try wines, I like to discuss my flavor palette and get suggestions, but that is not how things appear to be done at this winery. As the tasting price was much more expensive than other vineyards, I decided to leave without trying anything. read more

It was definitely beautiful and classy. For me, it was a bit stuffy and definitely expensive. I enjoyed it but I don't need to go back. I know wine seems to get more expensive the further South in the US we go so I'm kind of spoiled in Pennsylvania but I was really looking forward to the Octagon wine but it was a bit underwhelming. My friend, who typically only likes sweet wine, did throughly enjoy the Cabernet Sauvignon. So I would personally give it 3 and a half stars but I'll grant 4 stars would be warranted for others. read more

Arguably one of the best wineries if not the best in the state, Barboursville is nationally recognized for fantastic wine. Just as important in my mind is the fact that it is also accessible. This isn't a vineyard where every single bottle is $100 or more, this is somewhere with wine for everyone in addition to their specialties. The venue is exceedingly pleasant, and very comfortable, with different levels of formality (and expense) for different tastes. I do miss the pre-COVID tasting room, which was more interactive and sociable, but I understand the adjustments and due respect the installment of the wine dispensers. I'd like to recommend a specific wine, but I can't really because they're all pretty solid. If you do want to splurge though, the octagon and the goodlowe mountain are absolutely worth it, and I highly recommend getting a bottle of the Phileo to take home for dessert. It's a light, not overly sweet wine with decent complexity, and I say this is someone who really doesn't like sweet wine at all. The address picnic areas are also delightful, and I am going to reinstate the practice of going for my birthday every year. read more

What an amazing place. Barboursville Vineyard has something special going on in central Virginia. We didn't know what to expect, but it's for sure a keeper for future returns or if you are visiting the area check it out. They have 2 tasting rooms, one they serve you and it's a little more expenses, they also have packages, but 16 of their own wines to choose from. In 2 beautiful separate settings. They have numerous whites, reds and dessert wines to choose from. All vineyards are from the area and they even store some of the wine on site, visit the Oak Room to see just a hint of what they store. At the moment due to COVID there are no tours. There is a store on site with some quality wine products and cutting boards even some vineyard merch. The restaurant on site has amazing reviews in some top publications like 'Southern Living', it sound amazing and would be a great place to wine and dine for a pretty penny. There are places to sit outside, picnic tables and amazing views of the valley and vineyards, it's a stunning place, it very much reminded us of the rolling hills of England. There is a ruin of Governor James Barbour's mansion that was built in 1814 by Thomas Jefferson an Inn and cottages that scream anniversary weekend, they look simply stunning and delightful. Finally if you have kids bring them, we have 3 boys 8,5,3 and the ground are so massive they ran everywhere. The massive bushes by the ruins are perfect for an epic game of hide and seek. They absolutely loved it. Enjoy this special place, it's a must do when in the area. read more

This was my second time visiting Barboursville Vineyard in less than a year. This time, we were celebrating my best friend getting married. I was able to make a reservation for our party of three for lunch in the Library of 1821. When we arrived, we were promptly showed to our seat in the Library. The three of us enjoyed a lovely lunch and wine tasting. I ordered a large meat board, while the two ladies each had a lasagna. The food came out within minutes and tasted delicious. Our servers were very sweet and nice, constantly checking on us and helping us take pictures. A historic site, and a popular destination for many where you can find delicious wines and beautiful views. One of our favorite wineries in Virginia, and definitely worth a visit. read more

Very disappointing. What started as a charming drive through beautiful grapevines and oak trees quickly became void of any charm whatsoever. For starters, the tasting was completely self-guided. When you pay for a wine tasting experience, you expect a professional to guide you through the various wines. What to expect taste wise, aromas you may notice, explanations of the harvesting process, etc. Here, they gave us a card, pointed us to the automatic pouring machines, and the only guidance we received was learning how to insert our Dave & Bustersesque plastic card into the machines to receive a measured-to-the-milliliter pour. You had to scan a QR code to get even the smallest description of what flavors to expect. The handouts (sitting next to the self-service pouring machines) only said basic things like, "intense bright flavors!" and "great with seafood!" Prior to Covid, this place had actual people actually describing how the wine actually tasted. They had tours to show you their process. They had charm. You know, all the things you EXPECT at a nice vineyard outing. This was lacking absolutely all of it, and when asked about the tours... "oh, we don't do that anymore". That basically sums it up. Disappointment, and all the charm of a grocery store self checkout lane. read more

We really enjoyed our time here and the atmosphere, food, wine and scenery was perfect for a weekend in Virginia. Plenty of parking close to the venue and we were sat immediately on a Friday afternoon. We started with the Vertical red wine flight which is 4 reds followed by a glass of our favorite, #16. While enjoying our wine, we ordered the charcuterie board with our favorites being the raspberry and blueberry jelly and goat cheese, sliders and bolognese pasta. Overall, the food is good but portions are small. The atmosphere takes you to Italy and their attention to detail to every nook and cranny was obvious. I really liked the vibe of the place and service was on point. We stayed for a couple hours and really enjoyed ourselves! I'd recommend it and would definitely come back! read more

Had a lovely afternoon at Barboursville. Started out by taking a brief look at the ruins, which were interesting. We opted to do the standing tasting as opposed to the library tasting as we wanted a slightly more casual experience. The tasting was self serve with little machines so you could create your own flight of 6. There was also a pamphlet with a QR code with videos that described the wines. It was definitely non-traditional but for post-Covid tastings I am happy there is still information available about the wines. There were quite a few staff members around the tasting room and several were enthusiastic to tell us about the wines. Nice fire place on the middle of the room, and we walked through the wine cellar. We really enjoyed the reds. Next time we might even try the more elevated Library tastings. read more

When I first had Pinot Grigio, it was too sweet. Probably because I picked a cheap bottle from target and simply didn't like it. A friend recommended this place so I swung by and told the staff that I wanted something not too dry and not too sweet. At first when they recommended their best selling Pinot Grigio, I was hesitant. But after a sample, I understood why this was one of the best sellers. Five dollars a glass and it's super easy to drink. I love that I can find it at my local total wine. read more

Barboursville remains one of my favorite wineries in the area. The wines are great, the views are spectacular, and for the first time I can comment on the restaurant after a recent trip! There are lots of self guided tasting options. I suggest making a reservation in the library if you are only interested in a tasting. However, if you are looking for dinner the restaurant Palladio is excellent. We had great food and service. The filet was incredible, as well as the bucatini (but everything we had was great). We have been here several times, so this is a combination review. The Palladio restaurant is excellent and really shows off their wines and the veggies, herbs, and meat grown on campus. It's a dressy restaurant. While I don't believe there is a formal "dress code" I have always at least gone in business casual. There is an Inn and cottages. We have stayed at one of the cottages and we highly recommend it as a romantic get away from big city professional life. We are not into all their wines, but can say there is something for everyone. Many will recognize the Octagon red. It's a mix of estate-grown Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This is the wine that has won some awards and can often be found at Total Wine and Wegmans. It's a truly great red blend and pairs well with any hardy meat dish. Do also check out the Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. For the whites, we recommend the Vermentino Reserve. Native to Liguria, Corsica and Sardinia, I can't recall having this grape from a US vineyard before, but they do it justice. It's nicely dry with good minerality and tinge of citrus. If there is one knock I have on this place it's the tasting room. You have to move around to different spaces for whites and then two different spots for reds. They also let pets in there. I love dogs, but not with a wine tasting. For a superior experience, we recommend doing a tasting in their Library. There you can get their older and best vintages paired with house-baked breads, house-cured charcuterie and excellent local cheeses. This will cost you more, but it is worth the price. read more
