I've been here many times and love it. The arepas are consistently delicious. And they are gluten free, hurray! I need to avoid gluten and I have so many choices here. My favourite arepas are the pabellon (beef, beans, plantains) and the reina (chicken avocado salad). They added bowls recently which are great value and very generous portions. I haven't been back since they removed it from the menu because I'm not exactly sure how to craft a meal: One arepa isn't enough but 2 are too much and too expensive. Plus I would like a side. My neighborhood was doing a tasting event at various restaurants and White Maize was on the list. I had never ventured there and don't think I had ever had Venezuelan food either. The tasting was an arepa and I had the chicken one while my gf had the beef one. The arepas also have cheese and plantains which add a good balance of sweetness with the savory nature of everything else all within a corn maize dough They were both excellent. This is the best Venezuelan food we've found in NYC (having been to all the staples in Manhattan, BK, Bronx and jersey city). The arepas are cooked to perfection and are just the right amount of crispy with a little soft dough left on the bottom from scooping them out. The tequenos aren't just overhyped mozzarella sticks and have real pastry crust on the outside. The green sauces complement everything perfectly. It is as good as it gets, best arepas in NYC. Not much of a fan of Caracas, but White Maize has a sublime food factor that puts it ahead. The ingredients to all the dishes we had (vegetarian) were cooked in such a way where no one component overpowered another. I tried the cachapa. First time for me. It has a distinct flavor i couldn't recognized besides the corn and cheese. It was not my favorite. Besides price was expensive for a piece of sweet corn dough and cheese ($10.56) I think because of the neighborhood prices are hight. Also they took 30 minutes to serve the order. There is a real issue with prioritization here-when someone comes in and orders takeaway you should aim to serve them quickly as they are clearly in a rush.
