Meh. I had dinner for the first time at the White Owl Tavern (WOT) last night. We were seated at one of the high tops near the reception desk, This was a mistake. Theres a blinding WOT neon light on the wall behind reception and the high top tables have seats that face directly at that light. Highly recommended to sit at a booth or the bar. If you are one of the unfortunate souls to be seated facing that light, you should consider wearing sunglasses during your meal. We asked several times to turn the light off, but we were ignored by the staff. That's Strike One. Drinks. Our dining party all found something that we liked. The selection of draft beers is limited, but they have good variety and quality of beers. No problem there. Appetizers. We ordered the Misto Fritto for the table. We were not given a basket of bread and wanted a little something before our entrees. This appetizer was a small platter heaped with overly breaded and fried chunks of stuff. Half the time I couldn't tell what I was eating, but I knew it was caloric. I prefer lighter breading and a lighter frying and to be able to tell what I am eating. Strike Two. Entrees. This restaurant offers 10 different sandwiches and only 7 entrees, which are offered with lunch and dinner pricing, which made me think, "Is this primarily a lunch restaurant that also serves dinner?". But the bar is pretty nice and more fitting of a nice dinner tavern, so I was a little confused about what kind of place this is. Back to the entree menu. It was seriously disappointing. Seven entrees and four of them are pasta. You won't find a steak or any pork choices on this menu. What an awful shame. And there's only one chicken dish, and it's italian. Severely lacking variety. Strike Three. Luckily, I was in the mood for salmon last night and it was a winner. The salmon was a typical 6-7 ounce filet, nothing crazy, but it was big enough for my appetite (which was seriously dented by that heavily fried appetizer) and appropriately priced. The fish was delicious. grilled perfectly and tasted like butter. The dish was interesting because it didn't include a traditional carb like rice or risotto. Instead, it was on top of hummus! I had never seen this before and I had doubts about it, but it was awesome. I cannot neglect the other elements on the plate, roasted asparagus and arugula with a lemon vinaigrette, like you'd find on chicken milanese. It all worked together so well to my tastebuds. So good that I would take away one of the strikes. It makes me wonder what other gems might be hidden on this muddled menu. I won't be in a rush to return to the White Owl to find out but, if I do, I know that there's some beer I will like and my favorite salmon entree in town to enjoy. read more

Nice little place. Front door needs adjustment..could not get in!!!! Had to walk around back past those that were smoking and each time the door was opened you could smell the smoke from your table. Nice, clean remodel inside though sitting in a high backed booth was a bit sultry. The a/c needed adjusting as the crowd thickened. The salad was fresh, the meal was tasty..the berry crumble dessert was missing the "crumble". An easy fix..flour,sugar and butter! One of the drinks had minimal alcohol. Great new spot! My husband and I ordered the Fritto Misto, Hot Chicken sandwich, Birria tacos, Asian Zing and topped that off with the Browniemisu! They even have their own craft beer! Heard great reviews about the place. I thought the food was so so. No bread was served. The prices were high for what you got, eg a bowl of rigatoni for $21 and the wine prices were high. I decided to get two glasses of the house cab the carafes were miserly. All in all a disappointment. read more

I've eaten at the White Owl Tavern twice, and I loved it both times. I've had the umami grilled cheese, and also the hot and naughty chicken sandwich. Both were creative and excellent. There is a nice cocktail list and the service is efficient and friendly. I enjoyed both visits and definitely will be back. read more

Located where the old Wild Irish Rose used to be, this restaurant/bar has some over the top food. The Misto Fritto is calamari, baby scallops, and a few shrimp along with some cherry pepper slices. Everything was perfectly battered, seasoned and flash fried just right to be tender. The Umami Grilled Cheese was delicious and savory with the biria - the cheese crusted bread was a nice touch.. The Fusilli alla Vodka was great and a fun twist on the usual penne alla vodka. The fusilli pasta was well cooked in a fresh vodka sauce with a good amount of fried chicken chunks, some chopped cherry peppers and topped with a dollop of fresh ricotta cheese. The cocktails were well made and very tasty. Service was good and the chef came out to check on the food. The completely renovated interior is well done and more spacious than expected. I was excited to try this new place and hoped I would find a new local favorite. The interior is nice and menu looked promising, and while the service was attentive, friendly, and accommodating, the portions and flavor for the price were disappointing to say the least. My $15 salad didn't come with a protein, which is fine, but when it fits in the palm of my hand, I question if it's truly and entree salad. The overpriced $12 kids burger had 2x as much food as my small serving of cucumber, tomato, arugula, and feta. I also ordered the birria tacos hoping for something close to my favorite food in Texas, and had it only been because of portion size, I could have been fine, but it was missing any bold flavor, probably due to the 1oz serving of meat. I'm not sure we'll go back. Lastly, this place is brand new-where is the owner/management? If I opened a new restaurant, I'd be circling every single table on a Friday night, asking how things were and seeking feedback. New restaurants need obsession in management/owners or they'll fail. read more
