With so many good restaurants in the Northwoods don't waste your time on this one. We attempted to obtain cocktails from the bartender, who apparently is a part owner; which we all found hard to believe based on his disposition, was less than friendly. He struggled to knit our drink order together and could not remember more than two beers at a time. The bar area was busy but not over the top. When we attempted to obtain a second cocktail it was another painful experience. The building was less than 40% full and we were seated approximately an hour after arrival which could be understandable based on the amount of staff they had available. We were seated, provided a salad; a mere chunk of iceberg lettuce with not so much as one additional condiment. Once we ordered, It took over an hour to finally receive our steaks; my wife ordered a tenderloin medium which came out raw, we returned it requesting some additional time on the grill and it came back and and it still wasn't medium. I ordered the ribeye, it had decent flavor however, was not any more than a half inch thick and I wouldn't call it good steakhouse quality. This location had been hyped to us; and we all were disappointed and we certainly would never return, it all starts with your first interaction with the bartender and it really never improved. Can't say enough about White Stag. The small menu covers all the bases. Family friendly, good service, great steaks, fish, chicken, and the house made Russian salad dressing is perfect with the simple ice berg wedge salad, especially with a side of blue cheese. We dine here often. Well worth the 40 minute drive. read more

Gosh. I love this place. I've only been like 3 times separated by like 7 years each but it has been some of the best food and just a very fun, unique atmosphere. The steaks are killer. The jumbo shrimp fabulous (seriously, I know it sounds weird, just get them). The three dressings mixed together. Money. And the old fashioneds are fantastic. What is not to love. By the way, they put in air conditioning like 10 years ago, so if you haven't been in a while, it's not scorching on the inside anymore. :) and the staff was so accommodating and gracious with our kids (which I was nervous about based on the type of restaurant it is). read more

My family and I had dinner there last Saturday (2-12-22) and we had a wonderful dinner. This was my 50th year having a dinner at the White Stag. We arrived at 6:15pm and were seated immediately. It was pond hockey weekend in Eagle River so they were getting very busy after we sat down. By the time we left there was a 90 minute wait. Our waitress was a little delayed in getting to us but once she did the service was excellent. When we sat down she only had a few tables but quickly the room filled up and i was surprised that the was handling all the tables in the room plus a few others in another room. We got our first drinks (6 old fashions, the best in the northwoods) right away but were unable to get another round until the end of dinner because the bar was so backed up, which was fine since we were not in a big hurry. We all ordered filets and they were very good. Of course the salad, rolls and homemade dressing are the best, and don't forget to get the mushrooms and onions. The food is still the same as it was 50 years ago, but the service is not the same. This is not the fault of the owners or the hardworking staff. What is missing at White Stag are those young teenagers bussing tables, filling water glasses and doing what needs to be done so the wait staff can do their job. I blame that issue on the parents out there that do not require their teenage children to get a job, regardless of the wages. Everyone better start tipping more than 20% for these hard working wait staff, they are doing the job of 2 people and we will not have great restaurants like the White Stag to go to if the are not rewarded for their hard work. read more

When an establishment has a huge menu I tend to think they they really aren't doing anything particularly we'll. The menu at the White Stag is short and simple. The salad and sides (while great) are minimalist. It's all about the steak and chops here. And it has always been done to absolute perfection. Big Fish in a Small Pond would be a more appropriate name. We had a table of four, each ordered a filet mignon - one was over cooked and another sinewy, so I guess 50% success is good enough. Waitress who never introduced herself was a cool stiff breeze every time she felt like waiting our table. Pleasantries were not her strength. And the owner is a prick. He will watch you pay for a $250 tab, preach about restaurant rules, then wish you good luck on the road. No wonder we were one of four tables at 8pm surrounded by 30 empty tables and glazed over staff. This place would be bankrupt in any other town. read more

I honestly cannot overemphasize how amazed I was by the White Stag Inn. Upon taking my first bite of the 12 oz Prime Rib, my only words were "holy shit." Amazing. But let me rewind. Upon being seated, we were served quartered heads of lettuce in nice wooden bowls with three dressing options (the Caesar was my choice, and was delicious). We ordered (the steak and the haddock), and soon we were in culinary heaven. The potatoes were delicious, and White Stag has a cottage cheese/chive combo instead of the normal fixings, which was delicious. But the centerpiece was the entrees. The haddock was amazing, the steak was superb (and cooked correctly! It's such a relief to find a place that knows what medium rare actually means!) and there's no question I'll be back soon. We love the White Stag and have been coming here on our annual pilgrimage for about 20 years. Steaks are consistently excellent and we love the excessive supply of jus served with the steaks. Ambiance is wonderful. Might it be nice if there was more variety to the menu? Sure, but this place does a few things and does them really, really well. I found this restaurant on yelp. The service was terrible, the food was overpriced and management wasn't any better. I ordered the chicken and It was raw and bland. I asked for it to be cooked and the waitress whose name is Cindy seemed really bothered by my request to have it cooked. I was one in a group of nine, everyone in the group had their checks messed up and when we asked for them to be fixed the checks were snatched out of our hands. I tried to talk to management about this and his response "well Cindy has been with us 28 years." EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE!! Do yourself a favor, eat somewhere else. read more

This is the second time I have eaten here and this was by far the worst. I ordered a 10 oz filet mignon medium rare. It came out burnt on the top side and barely had char marks on the bottom. The inside was cold, raw and chewy. Worst piece of meat I've ever had. read more

The best restaurant in the world. Once drove for 6 hours just to eat here. Would do it again. "8th Wonder of the World" would not be an exaggeration. It's impossibly hard not to order a steak here because they are ridiculously amazing. If you venture outside of a steak, the "pork chops" are like nothing I have ever experienced anywhere else in the world. You get two enormous chops of smoked ham on the bone with cherry sauce and it will blow your mind. I could eat my body weight in the potato topper. Quarters of iceberg lettuce even taste magical at the White Stag when covered in the delicious homemade salad dressings (which you can buy Mason jars of to take home if you ask.) This is a family run joint that's been here since the '50's and I've been in love with it since I was old enough to walk. It is unpretentious, it is in the North Woods, and I'm telling you - it blows the hell out of any snooty steak house you've ever tried. read more

They are very uncompromising with their 10 item menu. Steaks were good and well cooked, but expect no veggies and iceberg lettuce with naught but 3 choices of forgettable salad dressings to go with your meal. The environment was great but the prices were ridiculous. The steak was equivalent to a $12 at a chain restaurant. The $7 salad and rolls consisted of a quartered head of ice berg lettuce and 3 choices of dressing... that's it. After reading reviews this was a must stop. I should have paid more attention to the critics. We all ordered New York Strip steak @ $25.00. Not a typical strip steak as they had bone in. My first bite was a large piece of gristle I needed to spit into my napkin. Not very tender, flavor ok. Also had mushrooms that were just ok. Special cottage cheese puree for baked potatoes, I would have preferred sour cream. Rolls were good, but I didn't go for the rolls. Sat at bar for after dinner cocktail and was served by the unfriendliest bartender we have ever come across. Isn't that a bartending prerequisite? Won't be back. read more

My first White Stag experience was in the late 1950's while fishing in the area with my Dad and friends. We were told that the then chef / owner had worked for the George Diamond steak house in Chicago and that the menu was pretty much 100% comparable, which was exactly true. The steaks that night were wonderful and they still are, it's a simple Northwoods restaurant that happens to serve some exceptional food, just as they have for so many years. What a great supper club! They don't give you all the choices, but you don't need them. You get a big wedge of lettuce and yes, you need to put all the salad dressings on, they work together very nicely. Potato was done perfectly. The ribeyes were outstanding. I would only have like just a few minutes between the salad and the arrival of the steaks, we felt a bit rushed and it was not busy, only because it was a Monday night and the plane is huge, smaller places would have felt packed. They begin seating at 5. Can sit at bar if you come earlier. Bartender and waitstaff not very friendly most of the time. The food is what it is and they do it very well: old school cocktails. A wedge of iceberg lettuce with three homemade dressings you can mix and match. Rolls (frozen and reheated, and if you want more they charge you) ok. Char broiled steaks and seafood pricy but great. Shrimp are fantastic. Not for young families as there is no kids menu. I guess they could split an entree, but it's not cheap. Quintessential Northwoods supper club. Great cocktails. The greeter/bartender was incredibly rude as usual. We have tried this spot repeatedly and have always been treated horribly by the bartender. The funny part is that we have encountered 3 different bartenders...they must strive for rudeness. The atmosphere leaves much to be desired. Not a friendly experience but good food. And I could have looked past that but the service and friendliness of the staff left a lot to be desired. This place was a gluten-free dream. Pretty much everything on the menu is gluten free! The only salad is a wedge of iceberg lettuce, one per person brought to the table in a heap and plopped into your individual salad bowls by the waitress. She also brings three little tureens of salad dressing, made right in the restaurant, all three are gluten free. I liked the garlic one the most. Then you order a meat item from a short list that includes filet mignon and pork chops, the meat is thrown on a grill by the chef, and delivered to you with a baked potato. They don't even use sour cream on the potatoes (which sometimes can have hidden gluten in it). Rather, they serve a delicious blend of cottage cheese and herbs. I was in heaven. Fantastic steak cooked on REAL charcoal right in front of you. A big hunk of iceberg lettuce with a lazy Susan full of homemade dressings. Love the north woods atmosphere sort of old supper club type feel with a really neat old bar. One of our favorite stops on the way up to our cabin. read more

After reading all the excellent reviews, my family and I decided to try this restaurant. The restaurant had an odd odor which detracted from the meal. I was expecting a wedge salad, and got a 1/4 head of iceberg lettuce with absolutely nothing on it. The dressings were bland. I ordered the chicken with the special sauce. The chicken was grilled and was okay, although I didn't taste anything special other than the chicken. The baked potato was good, but for the price I was shocked at how bland and plain the food is. I have been to other supper clubs in Wisconsin and have paid much less and had much better food. read more

Old fashioned supper club from days gone by..... It's been in the same family for nearly 60 years. This is the ideal place to go if your looking for that big steak and potato dinner. Steaks are prepared on an indoor charcoal grill in the restaurant; No food fryer in the entire restaurant. Excellent quality meat. Prices were reasonable for a big steak A very nice nostalgic and expansive bar. Looks like a scene out of a 1950's movie. Alcohol drinks appropriate priced. Brady old-fashion made by one of the owners (female sister) was only mediocre, which is about the only negative thing I can say about the place. All in all, an excellent value for a steak dinner. My family and I love this restaurant and have been going here for 30+ years! The food has been and continues to be of high quality and prepared to your specific requests. Nestled in the Northwoods of Wisconsin this is a destination we make from Southern Wisconsin on a multiple time per year basis and it never disappoints! You can have the chicken Dave's way or a steak from the fires of their grills that you can observe them make. Their iceberg lettuce with their homemade dressings is an experience in itself. I've been coming to the Stag for over 30 years- it's usually my favorite place to go every summer- very disappointed in our experience this evening- young, inexperienced service, all our steaks were undercooked and when one was sent back- we received an attitude about having it cooked more- that really irritated us as you always aim to please the customer...the salad was good however our lettuce was a little brown...not a big deal but the "questioning" of having our undercooked steak put back on was extremely irritating. I've never been disappointed with the food and the simple salad is always crisp and the dressings are good. But "homemade"? I doubt it. I once purchased a bottle of what they call "Russian Cream". A French style. I have since found that "Western" brand to come in the same bottle and tastes the same for much less. Surprise, surprise. I've seen the owner pitch a fit and yes he's a prick as stated in another review. Otherwise the food is good as is the atmosphere. Went in and sat at the bar, figuring we would have a drink and order take out, as no one (not a single patron or staff) was masked, despite governor's order requiring it. Now, I understand you can't eat with a mask, but the staff is required be masked, yet were not. Neither the hostess nor the bartender acknowledged us as we sat there for about 10 minutes, though were the only people at the bar! The tender was busy making drinks for the diners, but could at the very least have greeted us and said "I'll be with you soon" or something like that. He conspicuously avoided eye contact and after 10 minutes of being ignored, we asked a bus boy for a menu so that we might place a take out order. He was pleasant and handed us the menus, but when the bartender saw this he said rather gruffly "we don't do takeout". We feel like we were actually shunned for wearing a mask in their establishment, during a pandemic, when it is required by law. So, we left. And won't be back. We were very impressed with our entire dinner! Our steaks were amazing and our server was on point. They were super busy and the atmosphere was still nice. The salad dressings are phenomenal as well. Even though our server was busy with multiple tables he still managed to make us all a priority. This wasn't our first time there and it won't be our last. My family dined there often in the past. However, on our most recent visit, there was a new younger, owner/manager. We were bitterly disappointed when we received our overcooked grilled shrimp. When we tried to speak to the 'owner', he was ill mannered and rude, not at all acknowledging the poorly cooked, overpriced shrimp. He stated ' my brother cooked it and it is fine'. Went here for the first time. They don't take reservations and remind you with a snide sign at the door. They don't split checks and remind you with another sign at the door. I didn't think this was a thing anymore, what with computers and all. Steak was very good. the only starch is a baked potato. Wedge salad with homemade dressings was good but would like to see some kind of toppings or options. Price point was quite high given the lack of options and compared to area competition. They lose stars for price, sarcasm and failure to be in the computer age. Will not return unless suggested by others for a group meal. read more

Meh. That about sums up the food from sides to main course. The tenderloin needed seasoning of some variety; the onions and mushrooms we had to go with it were burned, badly. The rolls were ok, kind of solid though. Salad sucked, as usual. Their dressings are great, but they don't save the sad wedge you get. Some add ins would have been great. We come up north about 10 times per year. We have driven past White Stag Inn every time, and always wanted to try it. We went there Sat., June 2, 2012. We wanted to share a steak, potato, and salad. The waitress said that would be fine, and brought us a bowl with two chunks of head lettuce, about 1/2 head, and three rolls. When she brought our dinner, she told us that since I had shared my husband's salad, the "manager" said she'd have to charge me for an extra salad. When the bill came, we were charged $7. for the extra 1/4 of a head of lettuce. We won't be back. read more

What has happened to one of the jewels of the Northwoods? Steaks are now served on plastic plates. Shrimp are now served on plastic plates. Butter for shrimp isn't served with butter over a candle but in a plastic container like the ones you put catsup in at McDonalds. The steak and shrimp are not even warm when you begin to eat.
