We stopped by when we were up North a few weeks ago. The restaurant is beautiful, had a fun atmosphere, had great lake views, and was very clean. The staff were knowledgeable and very professional. The food, however, fell short for me. The bread looked like it came from a grocery store, but the butter was good. I had the pork with succotash. It was not my favorite. The pork was ok. The sauce lacked flavor. The succotash had a somewhat bitter note. Not sure if it was old. My wife had the alfredo, that I thought was greasy. While it has a great atmosphere, the food could use a good bit of improvement. read more

I really wanted to love this place The first time we went I had a reservation for our friend's anniversary we wanted to get a drink in the bar ... as you do in Wisconsin ... the host said non.. the bars pretty full . Um... ok Then we were sat we ordered drinks eventually and were told they were out of Bloody Mary mix, and then out of ahi tuna appetizer & then out of fish fry ... excuse me (?) Ok I'd like to chalk up the questionable sit to end of the season ...so I lowered my expectation drastically. This place is great except they have absolutely no vegetarian options. No pasta dishes and no white fish dishes either. My family used to love going here when they had pasta a poor man lobster on the menu. I won't go back u less they update their menu. It is also pretty expensive. read more

We spent our 20th Wedding Anniversary at this wonderful lodge and supper club. Stay in the Florence room, beautiful views of Lake Nokomis. Our meal was amazing, however the best part of this gem are the people that work here. Jacob the lodging manager was so helpful and had a beautiful fruit and bread tray waiting for us in our room. Zoey our server for dinner was AMAZING. Highly recommend this nostalgic getaway!!! read more

Poor seating system. Girls at front desk take your name and tell you to wait by the bar area and they will seat you when they are ready. Trouble is they do not remember your face as they keep looking for you at the bar. Waited 45 minutes after we had reservations . This is the second time we had this problem. Food was very good but not enough to come back for the third time. We will not be back. read more

Bootleggers Lodge is the kind of restaurant I've been looking for in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. North of Highway 29 "upscale dinning" is mostly confined to rustic supper clubs serving the same old menus that they've been serving since I was a child in the 1950's. Bootleggers provides a classic supper club ambiance with a menu that caters to those seeking something a cut above the ordinary. Consider the dishes we ordered for our first course -- Walleye Carpaccio and Lobster Gazpacho. As I said in the caption to my photo, the carpaccio was the best appetizer I've eaten north of Highway 8, and not only that, I'd put it up against some that I've had at Michelin starred restaurants. It's probably not for everyone, but if you like sashimi or the lightly cured seafood in a ceviche, you'll probably enjoy it. I only had a small taste of my wife's gazpacho but the flavor was bright and refreshing and there was a just the right amount of lobster meat for a fist course offering. My main course was more of a classic -- steak, baked potato and some steamed broccoli -- but the Wagyu flatiron kicked it up a notch from the ordinary. My wife ordered the seared scallops with locally sourced pasta. The scallops were large, nicely seared yet cooked through without turning rubbery. For dessert we shared a peaches and cream paired with a dessert wine that our server suggested would go well with the peaches -- it did. It was not very busy the night we were there. We were tended to in a timely and professional manner, and I enjoyed a moment of conversation with the director of food and events as we departed. The restaurant has a cool vibe. Reminds me of an old time gangster place. Even to go have a drink is worth it. I'm We came 15 minutes before our reservation, which we were rudely reminded of and we needed to wait. Fine. So we said we would go have a drink. The hostess forgot to come and seat us. We had to go remind her that now we were way past our reservation time. There were plenty tables open, so this should not have happened. The bartenders were very, very nice. Our waitress was a bit sarcastic. I told her I wanted butter for my baked potato and butter for my steak. When she forgot, and I reminded her, she was snotty and said "wow, you sure do like butter don't you?" The aujus for my steak was cold. I put butter in it and If the butter does not melt in my aujus or melt on my steak, obviously things are too cold. I don't want to dip my steak and a liquid that makes me stay colder. But to maintain a hot temperature. We need to start serving the food hot. My husband said his ribs were cold and bland. read more

Used to frequent Bootleggers for years & last time we were there was back a few years before they closed & did major renovations. So this was our first time since then. Had the most HORRIBLE dinner out ever. They sat the 3 of us at a table next to the LOUDEST group of 16 people. So loud we had to yell to each other in order to hear. We asked to be moved to a table further away, which many were available, but hostest refused. Then menu was so different. No soup or salad came with expensive meals. Only one chicken meal on the menu & no shrimp or lobster dinners. We ordered Rib eye steaks & my husband's steak had a VERY FOUL smell as his plate was delivered. We all could smell it. The garlic potatoes were sparce servings & no where near the amount that we would get years ago. And the broccoli & cauliflower were sparce & so over cooked...not fresh at all. No delicious garlic rolls, just sliced small Vienna bread. Very cheap. Our table lamp needed batteries. Waitress brought a new one & that one didn't work. All other tables had beautiful bright lamps. Asked waitress to have drinks with LIGHT ICE...the glasses were filled full of ice. The menu used to have creative names tagged on different meals named after gangsters & bullet holes throughout the menu which made it fun. Now everything is plain sometimes as much as $10 more per meal. Rib eye steaks are $48! When manager hoped to see us soon again, we told her we will never be back again. I've seen this same statement on other one star Reviews. Good luck staying in business. Beautiful decorating is not going to make up for bad food & poor service. Very Smoky walking through the bar area probably coming from the kitchen. We're sticking to "Pine Tree Restaurant" from now on right in town, Tomahawk, WI! They still had the beautiful paintings scattered around, but gorgeous drapes were gone and replaced with warped wooden shutters. Should have kept it the same as before. This place is beautiful, the food is consistently excellent, and the servers are super friendly. On our most recent visit the service was slower than usual, which is why I gave it a four instead of a five. It took quite a long time for us to get served at the bar before we sat at our table. We were hoping to have full drinks when our entrees arrived, but we had to wait for a while to order them. I think they were a bit short staffed. That being said, we tried some new entrees and everything was delicious. The swordfish special was the standout of the evening, the filet was cooked perfectly, and the crème brûlée was some of the best we have ever had. They have a beautiful bar and outside patio. Be sure to make a reservation and ask for a table by the windows in the bar. Enjoy a cocktail in the eagle's nest leather booths overlooking the lake while waiting for your table. Stopped in for an afternoon drink. Watched the bartender raw dog the garnish station with bare hands after handling cash, going in the back to grab other bottles, etc. The whole place is also infested with flies- like bad-bad. The bartender was nice enough, but very scatter brained and could hardly keep up with the steady flow of drink orders. Definitely not the best stop here. read more

We went here for my 80th birthday. The ambience and decor is wonderful, probably the nicest in the north woods. My steak, ordered medium rare was well done. It was tender. The mashed potatoes were cold and tasted like instant. My son and grandson's hamburgers were almost raw, they sent them back. My daughter's steak was cooked as ordered, tasty and tender. We waited 90 minutes after ordering to get our food. The dining room was not full so it shouldn't have taken so long. The waitress tried her best, she wasn't at fault. The food is average but the prices are well above average. Next time we'll stick with the Pine Tree, true and tried. read more

Such a cool place! The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and we even got a sneak peek of the rooms they just constructed upstairs - gorgeous!!! Our waitress and hostess (also part owner I think) went above and beyond to make our experience the best - including personally stuffing olives with blue cheese because I really wanted them with my dirty martini! As for the food, we had the pork belly, salmon, and scallops and they did not disappoint! We couldn't help but dip our bread in all the sauces to get every bite! Would highly recommend! read more

We had to wait an extra half hour after our reservation time. just to be seated at the bar. The bar tenders were unfriendly and we were left for an additional 40 minutes with empty glasses. We came here over the holidays and were super disappointed. First off, the place is incredibly beautiful and really nicely done. Also, this place is no longer a supper club, so don't expect a salad bar, typical sides, etc. Our service took forever and our waitress didn't seem to know what was going on. She forgot multiple requests and had us repeat our orders multiple times. It also took over an hour to get our food and drinks took super long too. 3 out of 4 people got the fish fry and no one liked it. It was very fishy and greasy and was very overpriced. One person got one of their pasta dishes which was good so perhaps stick to the main menu and avoid specials. I really hope they can turn things around but at this point it's more style than substance. Come here for a drink but go elsewhere for food. read more

This is a hidden gem in the north woods of Wisconsin. Bootleggers's offers elevated food in an area of Wisconsin that otherwise only serves bar food. It has the ambiance of a restaurant in a large city. It is warm and inviting. They have a seasonal cocktail menu, but the bartender can create any cocktail you desire. We started with the mushroom crostini. It came with 4 pieces. The dominant flavor was the creamy LeClare goat cheese. It was delicious and I would order it again. We then had the baked French onion soup served with warm bread and a spectacular herbed butter. The soup was smothered in Gruyère cheese. Underneath was a delicious beef broth with caramelized onions and a baguette. It was perfectly flavored. Not too salty as some French onion soup can be. The entrees we sampled were the Wisco Cherry Pork and the Norwegian Salmon. Both were delicious, but the pork dish was the stand out. The pork tenderloin was so tender you didn't need a knife to cut it. The cherry jus was not over powering at all. It helped to balance the flavors. The salmon has a crusted horseradish topping. It also was not over powering, but provided a nice balance, especially with the creamed brown butter white bean puree it was served on. Both dishes also were served with roasted Brussels sprouts. The bartender suggested wines that paired perfectly with each entree. We added a "surf" to our meal with trio of scallops. They were cooked perfectly with a seared top and tender. I would add them to any entree. The service was attentive and efficient. They offered suggestions and gave detailed descriptions. If you are looking for an upscale restaurant, look no further. We go to the bar and order a round. The bartender has the personality of a wood block. Drinks were ok. Then when told table was ready we were informed we had to settle up the bar bill before we went to the table. I asked if we could just add it to the table tab, told no can't do that, even though it table was 8 feet from the bar. We ordered the overpriced Tomahawk steak and I and my male friend decided to share it, since it's $150. The ladies ordered lobster bisque and a French onion soup and 2 appetizers. The cheese curds were bad to average. The sauce they gave us was garlic powder heavy and frankly bad. The wait was unacceptable. 20 minutes after we ordered the appetizers, waitress came back and said they're out of the pork belly appetizer. Unbelievable. We order bruschetta which was ok. Lobster bisque and French onion showed up about an hour after appetizers. Waitress tells us they're running behind! Mind you our reservation was 6:30 but didn't get a table until 7:00. The bisque was horrendous! My wife asked me to try it to verify. It was the saltiest food I've ever eaten. Disgusting. Inedible. I told the waitress, she had to check with the manager before she came back to tell us the bisque would be comped...what? That took a manager to decide that? Waitstaff not well informed. 15 minutes later the Tomahawk steak arrived not medium rare as ordered, rare! $150 steak and not cooked to order??? THEN... steak not seasoned!! Next to the steak was a bowl of smoked salt for the diner to season their own steak!!! WTH IS THAT!! Again for a $150 steak this is insane. Cavemen 10,000 years ago figured out how to cook unseasoned meat over a fire. This is embarrassing. Nothing special for wife's birthday. Then why get so excited when u mentioned it when making reservation?? If you're going to charge these prices you shouldn't be amateur hour. This "chef" can't be trained because no professional would send food out like this and if you do it better be the local dive dinner not some place charging NY prices. Disappointing isn't a strong enough word. Bootleggers should be ashamed of this disorganized and terribly prepared food. This has always been our go-to place. However, it has changed management and owners so I didn't know what to expect. Wow! The new owners have modernized, decorated with natural wood, intricate tin ceilings and have relocated the bar to make the front dining area a waterfront showcase. The atmosphere with the rustic beams, dark hardwood floors and reclaimed wood interiors is very comfortable and inviting. Of course one can not review a restaurant if one doesn't mention the food. The prime rib special we had was amazing! Huge! Perfectly cooked and seasoned with a deep saltiness with rosemary and pepper. One of the best meals I have had in a very long time. Now, this new ambiance doesn't come cheaply. The full dining experience for 4 with appetizer, soup, drinks and main course cost a family of 4 nearly $170. It was worth it for a special occasion( we came for Father's Day) but for your weekly Saturday supper club it had priced itself out of our range. I wish the new owners well. It does appear that they have put their heart and soul into the place and it really shines as a fine dining establishment. read more

we were extremely disappointed with this restaurant however the view from the outside patio is beautiful including the nice fireplace and beach they have. The restaurant itself was very classy inside as well. The menu was extremely small at this restaurant with not very many options to pick from we order the filet mignon, chicken cordon bleu and the shrimp. All of the food was mediocre and not near worth the price. The filet mignon was extremely rare and had to be sent back for more cooking. The restaurant didn't have a salad option and the meals were only served with a baked potato unless one wanted to pay for an upgrade. The most amazing supper club I've ever been to. Ironically, I started with the Chef's favorite mussels. followed by the French onion soup that was super illegal and should not be sold. I was trying to eat the bowl couldn't figure it out and then this amazing whiskey that was like unheard of! So this whiskey is put in batches of barrels and put on ships and sent to different climates and every bottle has a tag on it explaining it's journey straight up as a Johnny Walker fan. I'm gonna tell you this is black label Johnny Walker all day! Amazing to think that this drink you're having his traveled thousands of miles through the sea. I just can't explain how amazing it is to have a drink of it ! An now we get into dinner and I talked with the Chef personally she is super amazing. She is a Northwoods girl, and does what she does and does what she does good . During our conversation, I asked her what some of her favorites an what she recommends. after her sharing her passion with me she said she's not into too much seafood, but she likes scallops. She recommends steaks! I said, why don't you go back there and put that fire on some scallops for me and make your best dish. when it came I was presently shocked. I seen mashed potatoes and scallops and I thought wow that's a hard pairing personally as a chef, I fear putting seafood on mashed potatoes.! well, that is totally because of my background and not hers. She brought it through and I honestly during eating it thought that I was eating steak and potatoes the entire time. i really want to love this place and hopefully as they evolve I will. We ordered old fashions and waited for our table on the outside deck. The view is amazing. One of the best restaurant decks we've found in the area. The old fashions were underwhelming. They were too sweet and light on the alcohol. This is our 2nd time here and it was the same last time. You've got serve great old fashions at a supper club in Wisconsin or you're just not cutting it. The food is quite good and worth coming back for. However, there were no substitutions allowed on the sides. Who serves a baked potato with fried shrimp? That was the only option and it was disappointing. The salmon was outstanding as was the grilled Cesar salad-although the croutons with it were not good. The pork chop was cooked perfectly but needed salt. Improve the old fashions and add some additional choices for the sides and this place could be 5 stars easily. read more

Beautiful restaurant with a gorgeous lake view from the bar area which is huge and very comfortable. I would call the decor rustic chic. We arrived 20 minutes early and were told they would seat us in 20 minutes, so you're forced into the bar which was fine. The drinks were good and the bartenders very attentive. They actually were staffed well. Approximately 20 minutes later we were seated. I ordered the French onion soup which was very good, the broth was a little different, it tasted like there was a little sherry or something different added. I also ordered the queen cut prime rib rare which came out as I requested. But I immediately noticed the fragrance of Rosemary which I despise. To me that's such a strong spice it should be noted on the menu or told to you when you order it. I upgraded to the whipped potatoes which was a buttery bowl of goodness. Our waitress was very nice and provided good service. My friend ordered the chicken Oscar and loved it. The portion sizes were big enough that we each had leftovers. I definitely recommend Bootleggers's and will return but I would order something different. Overall, a very good upscale restaurant, not at all the usual Northwoods bar food. They had plenty of tables open and she said she needed to ask her manager who then came and told us sorry but those tables are for people who are eventually coming. She then told us come back at 830, just so strange how you turn people away with half your restaurant unoccupied. read more
