I just came here over the weekend with my husband and grandparents. They asked what we wanted for breakfast and we said hold-in-the-wall greasy spoon with killer hangover food and they said they knew just the place-and they weren't kidding! My husband and I each got the biscuits n gravy, mine with an egg and bacon and his with hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. My grandparents each got sandwiches though I don't remember exactly which ones they were. We all were VERY satisfied with what we got. This is arguably the best biscuits and gravy I've had. The gravy was so yummy I dipped my bacon in it. The sandwiches looked great, with nice crispy, buttery bread. Our waitress, I don't remember her name but she had very short hair was wonderful and accommodating and zipped around the tiny, chaotic dining room LIKE A BOSS but always with a smile. You can definitely tell how they've stayed in business since the 30s. I'll definitely make this a regular stop on my visits to Salem, and you should too! read more

A classic for a reason! We are newish to Salem, and noticed this place was almost always busy. We finally tried it ourselves last weekend with visiting family. This place is "no frills", but all heart and delicious food. The waitresses were so nice, and thoughtful of our children. The type who still calls you "hon" and talk about their mama's who are visiting from out of state. The coffee is drip and black, the food is hearty with an extra side of cholesterol, just the way we like it. The interior could use a refresh, the carpet should be cleaned, but (as a relative of mine would say) it would " wash away the memories". Bring your relatives who are visiting from the Midwest. Stopped in for breakfast, the restaurant is quant and clean, the waitress was friendly and attentive. Breakfast was breakfast which was descent. Guess the days when $3-4 for a plate of eggs, bacon and a waffle and $10.00 would buy dinner. My bill was $45.00 for 4. My niece had the eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast, my mother, sister and I had the Belgian waffle with egg and bacon plate with a side of hash browns to share among us 3. Here it is Folks!! Just the place they always told you about but you never got to go to because the line was out the door and you had to go to the "Second Choice Place"!! It's ALL good here!! The parking lot, the service, Breakfast OR Lunch, you can't go wrong. I even hope for the "Dish-Washer" Lady to come around with her glad tidings and friendly clattering of the dishes. It makes me want to help her just to spend some time with her and appreciate her. The rest of the Staff is just as great, right up to and including the Owner who is obviously "Proud of, and, "Cares about" his establishment and his product. This attitude permeates on down the line to the rest of the employees. After eating here at least twice a week for over 2 years I can honestly say I haven't fully enjoyed only one or two meals here. But let's face it, ~EVERYONE~ has an off day now and again and if one or two out of a coupla hundred visits fell a little short, I wish to hell the Government could operate so smoothly. This is a little hole in the wall restaurant. My husband enjoyed the pillowy soft biscuits and gravy. I had Don's mini mess, it was pretty good. The gravy to me was a little bland and the toast needed to be browned on both side instead of just one side, but overall a good breakfast. The waitress was very polite and attentive. read more

Usually great food. Today my husband and I came in and I ordered outside my norm and got potato cakes. Very bland, thought it came with bacon, if so I'm not sure where bacon was. Poured my side of gravy on them, still bland. I won't order them again. My husband ordered the Mess & forgot to say no onions and onions is all you could taste. A recent visit has me worried. The food is ok but not thrilling. The biscuit n gravy was only mediocre. Biscuit is good but gravy seemed more plain and flavorless. The service is great but the foods taste isn't up to pare and there hasn't been any update to the restaurant or the menu for who knows how long. Driven by many times, never stopped in. Until the other day when I had scheduled a lunch with a friend. Typical American diner style, customers, and staff. My friend and I were easily the youngest patrons in the restaurant for a good while. Everything was clean, if a bit outdated. We took the center table seats rather than the booths, I was told the booths were not very comfortable. It was not very busy and our waitress came right over. She was pleasantly chatty, offering tips on the specials and some of their better known dishes. We opted for our standard fair, I had the French Toast breakfast and my friend his omelet (with a slice of French Toast instead of regular). The coffee came out first, and I was a little annoyed that it was very dark, almost to the point I thought it was burnt. But subsequent cups were much better, I think I may have just got the last of an old pot. Our meals were very satisfying. My "crunchies-less" French Toast was sweet and not soggy (one of the banes of my existence is soggy French Toast). The side of scrambled eggs and bacon were great, the bacon in particular. I heard no complaints from the other side of the table, as my friend ate almost every bit of his meal, not even taking any home like usual. Been going here for years now, and never get tired of #15 breakfast! Their biscuits are the best in town hands down. Eggs are always prepared to order perfectly! Don't get me started on their gravy. I'd put that $#!* on anything! Hell, id reenact the 9&1/2 weeks food sex scene with this stuff! "Yes, its that good." Wait staff are very friendly and have the memory of an elephant "for all the right reasons!" They are always sun and shine, even early in the morning! On a final note. Pricing is decent and the wait was minimal for a Sunday. While this doesn't rate as high as Word of Mouth or Busicks, it was still a place to get a decent meal during Sunday brunch hours. We ordered a 15 1/2 (biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, eggs) and Dons Mess. If I were to go here again (and I may if the wait at our other favorites is long), I would try something without sausage gravy as it was pretty bland due to no seasoning. I woke up so hungry and craving comfort food so I went here for the first time today and got the chicken fried chicken and oh my gosh it was delicious. The place felt clean and taken care of. The BEST biscuits and gravy omg YUM! This little establishment has become our go-to breakfast stop. The servers are ON IT; they acknowledge you quickly and you've got menus and water right away. Never had to wait long to order no matter how busy they are. It is not a fancy place, but the portions are large, fairly priced, and delicious. White's is famous for good, old fashioned, greasy American breakfast food. If you like bacon, eggs and hash browns, you will like White's. It's biggest problem is that it doesn't have a lot of seating and the entry way can't be more than 6x6 feet square so waiting for a table on a Sunday at noon when it is full takes dedication.
