One of my favorite breakfast restaurants in Salem. Their prices are equivalent to your typical Denny's, but their menu, portions and flavors hit a home run every single time (shows they're really big on consistency). They're pretty busy throughout the week, especially weekends so expect to wait a little, especially if you're coming with a large group. The servers/hosts are friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Since this location is very busy most times, the staff are efficient at getting people in and out without making you feel pressured to hurry. They're very knowledgeable about the items on their menu and if you're feeling hesitant about how large their portions are... they do mention the half portions! I've been here a handful of times, but I always get the same things. This includes Don't Big Mess (half mess, which can feed 2-3 people), along with their sourdough toast with pancakes. read more

I love local diners and seek them out any time I travel for business. I was in Salem and White's Restaurant was suggested by several locals as a great breakfast place. They advised that it has been around for decades. Upon arrival, I was encouraged to grab any available seat. As soon as I sat down, a waitress stopped at my table and advised that I was a man who looked like he needed some coffee...she clearly knew me well. My coffee was served fresh and steaming hot in a matter of seconds. I am a sucker for homemade hash and ordered their version. The plate was served promptly and piping hot. It consisted of the hash, 2 eggs, 2 bacon slices or sausage patties and toast. The food was excellent. I believe the hash plate was $12 and the coffee was $3. The price was well worth the quality and quantity of the food served to me. If you are ever in Salem and in need a a good old fashioned breakfast, you could do no better than White's Restaurant. I been going to White's Restaurant at least twice a month if not more. Love the food and service until the last week and to day. The service dropped off a little. Maybe they're short handed. But today two elderly gentlemen walked in and wanted to sit at booth. The waitress told them to sit the table or wait outside. The went outside and they cleaned the front corner booth. The elderly gentleman came back in and sat down in the corner booth. The waitress yelled at these poor guys in front of everyone in the restaurant for not asking. I've been there many many times and they always say find seat anywhere you like. Felt really bad for the two gentlemen. My friend went over to them and apologized to them for being treated like that. White's is my go-to for comfort food. A nice breakfast with biscuits and gravy, an open-face turkey sandwitch with mashed potatos and cranberry, a grilled reuben -- you get the idea. Plenty of choices on the menu and the food is good. But there is a problem... This is the loudest restaraunt in town. I mean, punishingly loud. I leave with my ears ringing. Low hard ceiling, dish clatter, loud servers (the clientele is older), and from time to time the cook wanders out and bellows over the cacophony. Conversation with your meal partner is out of the question. I'd eat at Whites's much more often if they would install an acoustic tile ceiling and clear tables with a little thought to noise. In the mean time I'll pick off-peak hours for my comfort food. read more

While looking for a non chain place to have breakfast I stumbled onto this place. The sign in front caught my attention as it stated "Serving Salem since 1936" I thought I'd give it a try, I figured a restaurant that's been in business that long must be doing something right. The place has the stereotypical small diner look, which I like and usually enjoy. (Especially for breakfast) I'm glad I stopped here as I had a good meal. I'm somewhat picky about my biscuits and gravy, and while these weren't the best I've ever had they were pretty good. As was the omelette and bacon. Service was very attentive, and friendly. I went here for a quick bite on a Saturday morning. It was busy, but not packed. The wait staff here is very nice and were quick to take my order bring the food. I ordered the big mess and it was just that. Pretty much anything you can expect in a hash scramble was put on to this huge plate and delivered to me with a cup of hot cocoa. It was way too much food for one person to finish and it was exactly what you'd expect. This looks like a nice restaurant. Their specialty is French toast of different types. For $10 you get bacon, sausage, ham, onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes & hash browns grilled together & smothered in sausage gravy. It also comes with toast or an English muffin. Super filling, tasty, and a great value! My boy ordered the Awesome Omelet: Six eggs with ham, bacon, sausage, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, cheese, and hash browns, topped w country gravy, sour cream and salsa. I don't know very many people who could finish this on their own, this is absolutely something you can share with someone (I would advise it). read more

I understand the two-star reviews and could roll with that myself. I dropped in on a Saturday, not my preferred day for avoiding congestion, but the crowd was thinning out by 1:00. When full, the room is deafening, and seating selection does not favor the lone diner or privacy. Waitress was efficient and genuine and justified her tip. I ordered biscuits and gravy, probably not their signature dish, but it's how I evaluate diners. Biscuits were light and fluffy, gravy was bland. The coffee was excellent the day I was there. Half order of B&G was $5.25, coffee $2. Other reviewers claim they can eat diner food for less, but I don't know where. I went here the other morning for breakfast after a particularly nasty personal morning. As I entered, my waitress, Katie, seated me immediately and was instantly asking me if I wanted anything to drink and pointed out the morning special. She also picked up my book to see what I was reading. This point becomes salient later. I was instantly charmed, to be honest. The special was biscuits and gravy, with bacon or sausage and two eggs. I went with that, as I was in the mood to just go with the flow on that day. Katie kept my soda filled to the brim the entire time I was there, including my obligatory reading time. She also chatted with me for a few minutes about books and bookshops in the are (what with Borders closing and all). The biscuits were quite good, as was the gravy. The eggs came out perfect and the bacon was well done. Not greasy and rubbery, and not burnt. As I went to leave, Katie come back with a to-go cup of soda for me to take with me. I came into Whites on a Friday during lunchtime with some good friends and my hubby. I found the place to be very "homey" and cute!! The waitress we had was very helpful and friendly. My coffee cup never went dry. I decided to try their open faced roast beef sandwich. It was pretty good! The mashed potatoes seemed to be made from scratch...they had the "lumps" in them.
