I have been trying to think of a way to describe what Whitney does without sounding too mystical, but honestly, I am not certain what she is not magic! I'm a hairdresser so my right shoulder is basically messed up all the time. The first time I visited her I wasn't sure she had done much. I am a circus performer, which means a few things: I know my body better than most, and I am often doing things to it that are stressful or could incur injury. Athlete life at its most absurd. So when seeking a bodyworker shortly after New Years Eve, I had a pretty good idea about what was wrong, what I had done to cause it, and was searching not only for the very helpful poking & prodding of a healer's hands, but for someone who could lend their insight and recommend physical therapy exercises to help me rehab myself. I've heard great things about Whitney's massage services for years, but I haven't been a patient until very recently. In the past few months I have been battling plantars fasciitis (heel pain), a bruised tailbone, and a shoulder injury from a car accident. I decided to finally seek Whitney's help with these compounding injuries. Whitney's massages feel more like "actively debugging my muscles" than a spa treatment. She's helped me to understand the interconnection between my various injuries, and her massage has helped open up my hips, loosen my neck, and generally get my whole body into better alignment. She does a lot of pressure/strength testing of various muscles, combined with applying significant pressure to loosen spots of tension, to get everything working more smoothly together. Whitney is an outstandingly-talented massage therapist. I enjoy a general, full-body, relaxing rubdown... but Whitney offers something much better. She can assess, with preternatural accuracy, where there is tension or misalignment that is causing pain and discomfort, and can use a combination of massage techniques and neuro-muscular reprogramming to sort things out so the relief is far more than a temporary "ahhhh." I had a mild foot sprain that, over time, compounded itself into throwing off my hips and upper back so badly that I could barely walk. Where another massage therapist might have massaged the places that were directly sore, Whitney worked with my whole body, finding hidden imbalances that were contributing to the source of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms. She helped get me functional again in a very brief amount of time, when I was originally in so much pain I had actually broken down and taken a Vicodin at work. Whits knows her stuff, and is constantly deepening her knowledge of bodywork so she can address her clients' needs. If you just need relaxation and self-care, she can definitely provide that with great warmth and skill, but for injury, pain, or other acute issues, she is unparallelled. read more

I've been seeing Whitney since 2011 and no one else comes close. As a fat trans person with lots of ongoing chronic pain & health issues, it feels like a huge relief to be able to get care without judgement and with actual competence. A massage from Whitney actually feels like therapy! I recently received my first massage from Whitney. I say "first" because I fully intend to pay her another visit in the future. She has a friendly and comforting demeanor which helped me push aside a significant amount of my discomfort about being touched by someone I'm not intimately involved with. Even more impressive is that she managed to chase away a great deal of the stiffness and pain in my neck, back, and hips. In fact, the very moment I stood up from the table, I noticed that the sharp pain that had been living in my right hip for days was gone. Since I have chronic health problems, I didn't expect her to perform a miracle and send me away completely pain-free, but neither did I expect to walk away feeling as good as I did and to remain feeling *noticeably* better for several days afterward. Whitney does work out of her home, but in a separate building at the outside edge of her backyard, so it feels much more like you're at a quaint spa than someone's house. In fact, I felt a bit like Goldilocks because the massage table, room temperature, and soft background music were all Just Right accompaniments to Whitney's magic hands. Whether you visit Whitney yourself or purchase a massage for a friend, it's definitely time and money well spent. Edited to say that Whitney has moved her practice since I posted my review. Whitney makes my body feel great! I've played roller derby for 8 years and to say my body is beat up is an understatement, but after a massage from Whitney I feel fantatstic! Whitney is a knowledgeable healer who teaches you as she goes along. She figures if she teaches you to heal yourself, you can be her partner in your healing. She looked at how I stand, had me raise one leg and drop it, then the other, and that told her what she needed to know about where my muscles were weak or where they were over-compensating (she also listened carefully to my history and what I wanted her to work on). She was able to bend me into some different stretches and used various techniques (some deep tissue, some kind of surprising because they didn't seem to feel that amazing but then a slight adjustment and I had a whole new range of motion) to loosen up tight muscles and get things moving more fluidly. She gave me specific exercises to do which if I'd done them I'm sure would have helped, but I didn't, so of course the pain came back and I need to see her again. But yeah, listen to her, do the homework she gives you, and you'll need fewer massages, though you'll probably still want them because they feel good! She's intuitive, knows her stuff, and is excited to share her knowledge and help you learn to heal yourself. See her and feel better! read more

On a recent trip out to the Bay Area I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Whitney. She has to be the most through, firm but gentle technique that I've ever encountered in my 40 years. I have chronic neck and back pain due to a congenital defect in my right hip. Don't think that you're going to get "Standard Massage No. 4" from this woman. Oh no. What you're going to get in the highest example of professional body-work that I've encountered. By the time our session was over, my hip did not hurt (and my limp was gone). My neck no longer ground and crunched. And my TMJ didn't "pop". Whitney is wonderful! She has been an acquaintance of mine for years and I've always found her to be exceedingly warm, friendly, fun, and talented. I just went to her for bodywork for the first time last week. I've never had bodywork done, and I've only had professional massages twice before, but I must say she is AMAZING. Very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and her hands work wonders. I recently had a back injury, and I went to her for help with that. She recently started doing Neuromuscular Reprogramming, which is something I was previously unaware of. It is like magic. After an hour long session with her, my back felt much more flexible than it had, and a week later my pain is nearly gone! It's hard to say how much of that is due to what she did and how much is just normal healing, but her working out the tension that had built up in my back due to the injury has definitely helped move things along. Not to mention it felt incredibly good. Something else I liked a lot was how she told me exactly what she was doing, and educated me about how my body works in the process. It was really interesting to me because I love learning that kind of thing. Whitney is a blessing. She is a true healer. I have been to every type of massage therapist, chiropractors, and even the hospital for my extensive injuries. This is the first time that someone nailed the exact spots on my body to give me permanent relief for my chronic pain of over 10 years. I LOVE hiking and, after injuring/re-injuring my hip/leg/back, I was in pretty excruciating pain simply walking on concrete for more than 30 minutes. Whitney is the one of the few individuals I trust to work on my body. She took a great deal of time at our initial meeting to get to know my body in theory before she began her work. She is very well-versed in different techniques and is able to tailor her work to each individual client's needs at the drop of a hat. Whitney provides a warm, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in which to work her healing magic. She makes sure her clients are comfortable in the environment, offering heating pads and soothing music as an aid to the relaxation process. I left my first session with Whitney feeling replenished and relaxed and standing up straight for the first time in my life. Whitney is terrific and has all the qualities that I like in a massage therapist...thorough body knowledge, a quiet and calm demeanor, not afraid of silence (although we do tend to chat when I'm there), and the ability to adapt immediately to what the client needs. I have always gone to her home office, which is a very soothing room and always plenty warm enough--nothing kills a massage like a cold room! She takes care of every detail, from non-invasive music choices (or no music, whichever you prefer) to privacy and the offer of a glass of water afterwards. In February, I was in a car accident that totaled my car when I was 14 weeks pregnant. Whitney did a great job with my neck and shoulder pain (fortunately that was the only injury) and could see how I was holding tension in my body and how to alleviate it. I am sure that I healed that much faster thanks to her sure hands. I continued to see her a few times for prenatal massage and always had a great experience. She knows exactly how to set up the table for all the stages of pregnancy and makes sure that you are as comfortable as possible. She is very knowledgeable in different concepts involving pregnancy and childbirth, and knows what kinds of questions to ask to make sure she has a full picture. I can't recommend Whitney enough. She has a gift; from the first time I spent time with her I could sense her healing energy and wisdom. She really spends time asking questions and getting to know your history and your body's history in order to best help you, and she respects the individuality of every person's body and their needs. On a personal level, I saw her in a time when I was struggling heavily with an eating disorder that had ravaged my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Full disclosure- I knew Whitney as a friend before she ever fixed my back. She is my boyfriend's regular massage therapist, and he absolutely feels she is a miracle worker, but massage is usually not in my budget, so I never expected to be able to use her much-lauded skills. However, I had a terrible back spasm *getting out of my car in front of her house* one night. Just like the engine light going on outside your mechanic! I was literally doubled over with pain. Whitney immediately sprang into action, though it was 2am on the night of her housewarming party and she must have been exhausted. She set up her table with fresh sheets, got me lying down and feeling safe and cared for in like 20 seconds. Her client room is peaceful and lovely, and she absolutely understands how to take care of you when you have frightening back pain. In case you've never written a yelp review before: when you choose all five starts Yelp offers you the prompt "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" That's just the beginning of how awesome I think Whitney and her work is. As an FTM transsexual, it can be hard to find professionals who are culturally competent, aware of my bodies particular quirks, and able to hold space for the fact that receiving touch isn't a simple thing. Whitney fulfills all three (Woohoo! As good as it gets!). At our first session she took the time to find out where my comfort levels were and made sure I was completely at ease. She even asked if I was comfortable removing my binder. I was, but I definitely appreciated the implication that she could work with it if I wasn't. Binding can really mess with your body and Whitney knows it. She was even able to explain how a binder restricts certain muscles and makes others work harder (i'm a geek and love knowing "how things work" so that was really cool.) Most recently I visited her for a quick session after my top surgery last month. She worked out the kinks from the surgical binder and then showed me how I can massage my scars (i had double incision so there are 2 and they are looooong) to help the tissues become more flexible and recover to a more "pre-op" texture. She also reminded me that it is possible to breath into your ribcage when you're not binding and not just your belly. It was wild. I hadn't even realized that I'd forgotten how to breath into my ribs. but low and behold, it took serious conscious effort. Moral of the story: if you're trans and looking for a body worker, Whitney Moses is your body worker (you just didn't know it yet.) read more

Whitney is really excellent. Despite living in San Francisco I make the journey out to Whitney because the few times I didn't I really regretted it. She is definitely worth the trip for me. I've been a patient of Whitney's for the last few years. She is incredible! I don't know about you, but I tend to wait a little bit too long between massages. I always finally get around to having one when my body is at a crisis point and needs some serious work.
