Poor communication and dishonest billing practices. Billed me for "comprehensive exam" when only one tooth was examined and addressed. Nothing about my other teeth, gum health, jaw problems that I mentioned during intake. When I contacted them about fixing the billing, I never received a response. I was also promised a follow up on my insurance, didn't receive one. Also I booked my appointment with Dr Laura, but received an exam from Dr Katelyn instead. Would have been fine, however I didn't find the bedside manner to be great. For example when I mentioned that I wanted braces she simply asked "Why?" I found this odd since previous dentists had observed issues with my jaw alignment, bite, and teeth crowding.. but this time the dentist seemed confused as to why I'd even want braces. If a comprehensive exam was truly given in the first place, I don't think it would have been a question. Another example: after examining my cracked tooth she said matter-of-factly "I think we both know that it needs to go". Actually no I didn't know, that's why I wanted to get it examined in the first place rather than asking for an extraction. Weird vibes the whole time, just seemed annoyed like I was wasting her time. The place wasn't busy when I went, but wait times were very long. In total I spent about 1 hour and 30 minutes there. The actual exam was less than 10 minutes. Really disappointed because I had been here before without issues, which is why I came back. When I checked in, they asked if my insurance was still the same, and I confirmed I still have Delta Dental through my employer (I've been with my employer for 3 years). Based on that conversation and my prior visits, I had no reason to think there would be a problem. Later, I found out I was assigned to an out-of-network provider, even though there were in-network providers in the office. That was never clearly explained to me beforehand. They also did imaging that my insurance only covers at certain intervals, and no one told me beforehand that it likely wouldn't be covered. I ended up paying $872 out of pocket, which I did not expect. If I had known any of this up front, I would've made different decisions. Just frustrating overall because I returned based on prior good experiences and left feeling blindsided by the cost and lack of communication. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience needs to be shared. When my wife first found Whittier Modern Dentistry, I was genuinely impressed. The office is modern, clean, and well-equipped, and the front staff were helpful, courteous, and professional. My initial visit on March 5-6, 2026 felt routine. I underwent a full evaluation including X-rays, CBCT imaging, and periodontal charting. I reported pain, sensitivity, bad breath, and concerns about what felt like visible holes in my molars. Despite this, I was told by Dr. Katelyn Kcomt that I did NOT need any fillings or crowns. I trusted that assessment. However, over the next several weeks, my symptoms continued--food getting stuck, sensitivity, and discomfort--so I scheduled a follow-up visit. At my appointment on April 27, 2026, I was seen by Dr. Laura Beatriz Alvisua. From the beginning, the interaction felt tense. I respectfully asked multiple times to focus on my main concern (possible decay), but the conversation kept shifting to lab results that should have been reviewed weeks earlier. After finally being examined, I was told that: I DO have decay I need fillings and possibly crowns This directly contradicted the original diagnosis. At that point, I was ready to move forward and get the treatment I needed. However, when I briefly mentioned that I had never been contacted about my lab results, the interaction escalated unnecessarily. My concerns were mischaracterized as being about a $100 refund I was addressed in a sarcastic and dismissive manner I was told I was "unprofessional" and "contradicting myself," despite remaining calm The conversation became argumentative while I was still reclined in the dental chair When I requested copies of my X-rays and documentation (which patients are entitled to), I was told I was "fostering a bad relationship." I was then: Refused continued treatment Labeled a "bad client" And as I was leaving, staff were instructed to call security I was not aggressive, did not raise my voice, and was simply advocating for my care and records. In addition, I paid for a saliva lab test during my initial visit and was told I would be contacted within about a week to review the results and create a treatment plan. That follow-up never happened. To their credit, the front office staff remained professional and ultimately provided my records. However, the inconsistency in diagnosis and the way I was treated by Dr. Laura Beatriz Alvisua were unacceptable. Patients deserve: Accurate and consistent diagnoses Respectful communication Transparency in care Access to their records without resistance Due to the seriousness of this situation, I am filing a formal complaint with the Dental Board of California. I've also included a portion of the X-rays taken during my initial visit, specifically the area I raised concerns about at the time. Even when I'm nervous to go to the dentist, I'm excited that it's here at this location. The dentist has always been a touchy topic for me, but I feel so lucky that I can get care at a place that is invested in me. Dr. Cody is funny, gentle and kind. He has got the best personality and I look forward to all my appointments with him. He provides great care and does it so personably. Dr. Barry is knowledgeable and performed a difficult root canal that went quickly and smoothly. Alyssa, my hygienist is so sweet and when she performs my cleaning has the delicate touch needed while doing a thorough job. Office manager Liz is always helpful and I look forward to catching up with her when I check-in. I highly recommend coming to this location. I've been a patient of modern dentistry for over 10 years and when this location opened closer to home I was nervous I wouldn't like it. I'm so glad I do and as long as this staff is still there I will continue to be a loyal patient. Also note parking can be tough at later times because it is a busy shopping center. We came in for a routine check-up and cleaning, but everything about this visit was a mess. Nearly every patient was having issues with their insurance, and unfortunately, we weren't spared either. We brought our new insurance card with updated coverage and valid dates clearly listed. Instead of checking it in their system, the front desk insisted it was expired--based on outdated info from last year. We told them repeatedly that it was a new card, but they made us call the insurance company ourselves rather than just verifying it directly. Insurance confirmed the card was active, just like we said--but by then, nearly 30 minutes had passed and they decided to reschedule our appointment anyway. There was zero flexibility, and we were told it was our fault because they had supposedly left "multiple voicemails" about insurance issues. That wasn't true--I checked when I got home. The only message we received was an appointment confirmation. Nothing else. What made this worse was the behavior of the staff. They spent more time arguing with patients than assisting them and were laughing on the phone while discussing someone's insurance. It was uncomfortable, unprofessional, and showed a serious lack of care. We lost time, energy, and now have to miss another day of work to come back. If you are considering this office, please read all of the reviews 1st. We should have. Many people mention it's like a used car lot! Absolutely true. You can't just have a teeth cleaning like you've had your whole life, you need a specialized deep cleaning, which is much more expensive, and not covered by your insurance. The list goes on and on. I called around town to try to find a dentist who would answer my questions straight about billing and pricing etc. I do have my own insurance but I am picky about how these dentist offices charge the Insurance for their fees. All I wanted was a set up cleaning for myself my wife and daughter starting with my wife. I made an appointment for examination and for cleaning; something very standard. When we arrived, we were told that we did not fill out the online forms completely, and we were told we had to do it on our phones for about 10 minutes before they would admit us to our appointment. Front desk seemed annoyed by this, and I noted this. When the DDS finally came out to take us into our appointment (for my wife), I asked how long the cleaning would take, he lied and said 45-1:00hr. He also agreed to bring me in to look over her x-rays, Because I have a lot of experience with dentistry, English well. I waited a while about 45 minutes and then finally someone came out and asked me to come in the exam room because my wife was asking for me . I was thinking they were done with everything, but they hadn't done anything except x-rays, and to tell her that she needed a deep cleaning. my wife brushes and flosses daily and has hardly any tartar or buildup on her teeth; it definitely is not deep cleaning. so I go into the office and sit down and then they explain to me how much the charges are going to be. Now we need to come back several times to complete the deep cleaning because it's so bad. then, while I'm trying to talk to my wife, Dennis is interrupting telling her only answer me with respect to what he already told her about the problem areas in her mouth. it was obvious he was trying to convince her that she needed to spend $1300 under 2 to 3 trips to have her teeth deep cleaned. I started to get irate, because he flat lie to me in the lobby about the whole visits' scope, but then he said someone's gonna come in to explain it further. He leaves, and a woman comes in with the laptop to explain all the charges that we have to agree to before she will have her teeth cleaned. this is crazy, and reminds me of buying a new car, and the salesman sends you to the back room where a nice-but-fast-talking finance guy tries to convince you to buy under-coating, and an extended warranty. The total estimated bill came to something like $1,400.00, if we agreed to all the services they wanted to do, including adding glue to heal her cut up gums afterwards. basically, I was pretty pissed at the whole bait and switch team so we basically said that we're done here and left immediately. I feel that they acted in a deceitful way, and also have terrible customer service. We will not be returning to modern dentistry any of them. read more

This was my first time coming to this dentist. And I had such a positive experience! Office manager Liz who was super great; from the first phone call, to in person she was awesome! I had a really bad excruciating tooth ache and was able to get an appointment the same day. My tooth was pretty bad and the dentist was able to save it when even I thought it wasn't gonna be fixable. I'm getting my root canal done and I have to say that the whole staff here is awesome! They are super welcoming and kind! The dentist focused on the problem area first and getting me out of pain which I really appreciated. He didn't try to tell me other teeth needed fixing and try to do unnecessary repairs. It's typical for those kinds of dentist services to be pricey but they offered me financing and different options of financing too. And the price was around what I was expecting. They have 18 months deferred interest plans. They made the process of applying super easy too. Not a lot of dentistry take HMO insurance but they do! They actually are SUPER MODERN!! They use digital X-rays which (according to the poster on their wall) provides "crisper" images and 90% less radiation! I'm a hypochondriac so any technology to reduce radiation exposure to my body is a thumbs up Their office is brand spanking new. Everything looks (and smells) so clean! Staff was extremely personable and helpful. I was running late to my appt so I called to let them know I wouldn't be able to brush my teeth/floss before I got there, but they were able to provide me with a brushing kit!!!! Yay now I get to have my own little travel kit of floss, toothpaste, and toothbrush. Exam was straightforward. I dread clean ups but Dr. Christine Kim was very gentle. I had very minimal discomfort. I'll need to be back for a root canal and crown unfortunately. Will be sure to update my review with my experience with the endodontist. Clinic also has a surgeon that comes in 2nd Thursday of each month for wisdom teeth removal, which I will also need to come back for lol read more

BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!! Dr. Cody, Ashley (dental assistant), Georgina (financial counselor) and everyone in the office was so comforting and patient with me. I have PTSD and the dentist is one of my biggest fears but they were truly amazing and, comforting and so incredibly understanding. I was literally in tears and the entire staff kept checking on me making sure I was ok, they brought me water, offered me a blanket even charged my phone when it died!! Dr. Cody and Ashley BOTH explained everything very thoroughly and made sure I understood everything he answered all my questions and made me feel included with my plan of care. Georgina came in explained all my options and assured me that they had my best interest at heart. She didn't make me feel pressured to make any impulsive decisions or feel obligated to get anything done. Georgina was super sweet and helpful, she was able to accommodate me so I could get my cleaning and root canal done the same day. I'm terrified of the dentist, and because of that, I've let my dental health suffer. I was having pain so I made a last minute emergency appointment via their website, It was 10:30 pm on Tuesday night and I was able to book an appointment for 10:00am Wednesday morning ( their opening time ) the booking process was hassle free, and their office manager called me at 9:15 am to confirm, and she sent over paperwork so when I arrived at 10am I was already checked in and ready to be seen right away The amazing Christina Kim did my evaluation, told me what was going to happen, what plan she needed to put in place, and how we could fix my oral health. Step one was I needed a crown, she got right to work on that tooth, and she had a temporary crown installed within 90 minutes of my arrival Step 2 was I needed a deep cleaning, this is usually done in 2 or more visits, I was given this option, but I was also told the hygienist had time to do the entire deep cleaning that day if I had the time and If I thought I was up to the challenge. I figured I'm already here, lets go for it. This is where Teresa Alcorcha took over, she was just delightful. She went to town on my deep cleaning , she kept me comfortable, laughing, and was just a pleasure to me around. Step 3 was scheduled for the next day, I needed some teeth removed, Todd Summer was my oral surgeon, he double-checked everything and had all my wisdom teeth removed in no time with absolutely no discomfort. Seriously, I had no pain. I'm writing this 4 days later, from my desk at work. I can't describe how happy I am that I came here, I had been in substantial pain for a long time and just pushed through it because of my fears, now I have a treatment plan in place and cant wait to see my oral health progress Thanks to everyone here at this office, amazing team! read more

This place was such a huge disappointment. I told my husband to try this new dental office for a regular teeth cleaning and he told me it was the worst experience he's ever had. He mentioned the receptionist was not friendly or welcoming and waited almost 30 minutes for someone to take his X-rays and then another 30 minutes to have the dentist review his X-rays. Then had some inexperienced dental hygienist (if that's what she even is) started his teeth cleaning with a teeth polishing??? Then apparently left in the middle of the cleaning to wait for the dentist to finish off his cleaning which lasted probably 10 minutes. Total time he was there was 2 hours! Most of which was just waiting around. Needless to say, we won't be coming back here. read more

You sure this place ain't a car dealership? They hit you with so many unnecessary services, it's borderline criminal. I'll give a quick run down on how it goes if it's your first visit: 1) After checking in, you get your teeth x-ray'd ** This part was easy and pleasant. ** 2) In the dentist chair, the dentist calls out everything that is wrong to an assistant that is writing it down. ** This process really makes you feel like just another number. It's a very impersonal feeling.** 3) The dentist will explain why things are needed and makes it sound very important to get these services. ** This is were the car salesman feeling comes in. It's very obvious the dentist is trying to upsell you on things you don't need.** 4) Assistant comes back with a quote that I GUARANTEE will be in the thousands. ** I am not exaggerating. One quote for a family member was 11k ** After I asked some questions about the cost of these services, the dentist came in and basically asked what the problem was. I told them, this price is ridiculous. I'm not a dentist, but I know when I'm getting fleeced and wouldn't you know it, they magically removed stuff I didn't need and lowered the price. WTF? Haggling for dental services should not be a thing! Tell me what I need done, not what I could get done! TLDR; This place upsells like crazy. I'd get a 2nd opinion before you agree to anything. read more

I've been struggling to find a dentist that feels right to me until I decided to try modern dentist. I live close by so I decided to try it out . The moment I walked in the staff made me feel comfortable and were super welcoming and helpful. They have great payment plans and are very informative here. I want to personally thank Georgina at the front desk for squeezing me in for a walk in appointment even though I had an appointment and something went wrong on my end I must've forgot to confirm my appointment my wife made for me but Georgina made sure I was seen and helped with regardless. I want to thank Doctor Cody for being so welcoming and informative and making me feel at home , i didn't feel a thing when he was working on my teeth and he constantly would ask if I was okay and to let him know if I had any discomfort which I didn't. This was my first experience with a dentist I didn't feel a thing . I want to thank Alissa for teaching me how to properly floss and brush my teeth as silly as it sounds you'd think we know how to do it correctly until a professional shows you the right way. After my thorough dental examination Dr. Kim presented my options for proceeding with care and after coming up with a plan she and her team implemented it with precision and care. I was never uncomfortable and all of the issues I had been dealing with were addressed. I'm not gonna tell you my experience because it would be long and boring but I will say all they really care about is your $$$... they will double book people, keep you waiting in a room for about45 minutes until finally someonecomes in and asks you about financial stuff over and over again even though you have really good insurance, find something wrong that doesn't exist, and then charge you for a service first before actually doing the service, then figure out that you don't need that $275 service and can't refund your $275 because the manager is the only one authorized to do a refund and of course, she's not available for 3 days... Do yourself a favor and find an office that will actually care about you and your loved ones instead of your wallet. read more

We are always receiving surprise bills - some for work that was never even done!! And the manager took over 2 weeks to print out an itemized bill. I work for a Smile Generation office (same corporation as this office) and it takes about 1 minute to print out an itemized bill. I'm upset because they told us to pick up the itemized bill on a certain day and when we showed up we were told we wouldn't be receiving an itemized bill that day. Waste of time. Instead, the doctor offers to see how my mom is healing and we're hit with another $100 bill for him checking. She is afraid to go in to get her stayplate adjusted because they charge $100 EVERYTIME she needs an adjustment? I'm furious.
