The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Located a few…read moreblocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.
