Maple bacon, chocolate buttermilk, maple with toffee sprinkles, marionberry, lemon
    Sandee L.

Tucked inside this small gas station, you'll find some bomb homemade donuts. We would have never known to stop here if it weren't for a local's recommendation. I love local hidden gems! The marionberry is frickin' fantastic! It's loaded with tons of sweet, juicy berries and it was still warm and pillowy soft when we got it. A close second was the maple donut with toffee sprinkles. I thought it was going to be way too sweet, but somehow it wasn't and the crunch added a nice textural element. The bacon maple was also solid. I would pass on the lemon and the chocolate buttermilk. They have a good variety of coffee to wash those donuts down, and also some hot savory items in the back. Get there early (we got there at 9:30am on a Monday and they were going fast), but you don't have to get there early early (by that I mean like 7am...at least not on a weekday).

Cinnamon rolls the size of a donut box

Where else can you get cinnamon rolls the size of your head and huge apple fritters. Prices are very fair for the amount of food you get. I stopped in and there is a country store feel which was clean and shelves were stocked. The cashier greeted me upon entry and the wait time to checkout was hardly any. This will be my go to donut stop next time I'm in central OR.

    Best donuts ever

Only stop here if you want the best donuts of your life. Warm from the fryer, made the old fashioned way - you won't be disappointed. The glazed is perfect. The bacon maple the best we've had. And the apple fritter is the size of a small dinner plate. Donut heaven exists and it's here.

Glazed donut, minus a couple of bites!

Enough is Enough…read more Ray's Food Place and Shop Smart in La Pine need to do better. I understand that La Pine is a smaller community and that we aren't going to have the selection of Bend or a major metropolitan grocery store. What I don't understand is why we're expected to pay what feel like premium/Sunriver prices for groceries that are so often poor quality or downright spoiled. I have repeatedly purchased rotten potatoes, rotten onions, rotten avocados, tasteless fruit--and, most seriously, rotten meat. Let that sink in: ROTTEN MEAT. I purchased a sealed package of ribs for approximately $30, only to discover that the meat was rotten. A $30 package of sealed meat should not be something a customer has to gamble on when they walk out of the store. And this isn't an isolated bad shopping trip. I continually find myself bringing home produce that is already deteriorating or simply isn't worth what I paid for it. These are basic groceries--not luxury items. Customers should be able to buy a bag of potatoes, an onion, an avocado, fresh fruit, or a package of meat without wondering whether it's going to be spoiled when they get home. I shouldn't have to inspect every potato, onion, avocado and package of meat like I'm conducting a forensic investigation before putting it in my cart. And this is where the responsibility lies--with C&K Market, Inc. Ray's Food Place and Shop Smart are both C&K Market stores, so this isn't about blaming the employees who work in these locations. The employees aren't deciding what products the company purchases, what quality standards it accepts, what gets distributed to La Pine, what gets put on the shelves, or what prices customers are charged. Those are company-level decisions. If C&K Market is consistently selling inferior or deteriorating food while charging premium prices, then C&K needs to take responsibility for its purchasing, distribution, inventory management, and quality-control practices instead of leaving customers to absorb the cost of food that should never have been sold in the first place. And I have already brought these problems to the attention of store management--not once, but repeatedly. On three separate occasions, I have been given a $25 store gift certificate in response. I appreciate the gesture, but I'm tired of being compensated after the fact for food that should have been fresh and edible in the first place. A $25 gift certificate doesn't fix a systemic quality problem; it simply encourages me to spend another $25 at the same store where I just had a problem. At this point, I don't want another gift certificate. I want C&K Market to address the underlying problem. If you're going to charge premium prices, then the quality needs to justify those prices. La Pine deserves better than Sunriver prices with bargain-bin quality.

Last time I was there, I bought several bottles of mustard because the price was good. After I got home I realized they charged me $1.00 more for each bottle. I called and was told they would refund when I brought reciept. I went back a few hours later, bought 4 more and spent the next half hour trying to get my refund and the 4 more for the price marked. They eventually gave me the credit/price, but treated me like I was the bad guy in all this. Before leaving, I suggested they correct the price so no one else goes through this. Then this time I went in to buy muffins. I took a double take on price because there were 2 different prices for exactly the same muffins. I took photos of both and showed to cashier because, of course the highest price came up on the screen. They still went to go look, even with a line of customers, and came back with exactly what I told/showed them. My cashier verified with another cashier on what price to charge and came up with the higher price. I still bought them, but that wasn't right. Again I suggested they fix the issue, so not to have irritated customers. This is very bad customer service lately and I'm hoping they look into what is causing the issue, besides re-training staff on proper customer service.

I can deal with the limited selection and am routinely surprised in both directions about what you can find here and what you can't (e.g., fresh pesto sauce). I'd like it better if the deli section the store was built to hold still existed (as opposed to odd lift-up glass covered sections for prepared deli type food). I can deal with the mixed quality of the produce -- some is great, some not so much, so just pay attention when you're shopping produce. What I can't deal with is the meat case that seemingly doesn't keep the meat cold enough. On multiple occasions I have bought meat from that case (e.g., fresh whole chicken or more recently hot Italian pork sausage) that, upon opening at home, I discovered had gone bad, presumably because it got too warm in that case. And that's after picking product from the very back in order to hopefully maximize refrigeration. Net: come here if you have to, but if you're in Sunriver, I'd recommend trips to Market of Choice or Whole Foods in Bend. Nothing screws up a dinner plan like opening the meat and saying, "oh no, I can't use this."
