Oh Wild Onion. Where have you been all my life! Wild Onion is a co-op grocery store that supports local vendors and the community at large. I left with what I needed on my grocery list in addition to a little more that I didn't think I'd want but needed! I also had lunch at 4 Suns Kitchen who thankfully has a permanent storefront in the co-op. 4 Suns is a New Orleans style restaurant that offers a lot of tasty fare like gumbo, Po'boys, rice/quinoa bowls, smoothies and juices. I just had their catfish Po'boy which was so good and I'm slowly eating my way through their menu. I anticipate any future orders I get from there is going to be solid all around. Parking is a little tight here. Wild Onion is in a strip mall however there are multiple, popular businesses that share space (Wing Stop, La Michoacana and an insurance store) so parking is kinda hit or miss. Try going during off times otherwise the alternative is metered street parking. read more

Imagine you are trying out a new recipe. This calls for a little bit of a certain spice. Now you can either buy an entire bottle that will gather dust (i.e. start clumping) after a couple uses, or do 'unauthorized modifications' to the recipe. Enter Wild Onion - they have something I've never seen in a grocery store before... you're able to buy spices and some baking needs (e.g. cornmeal) by weight! No more caked up spices or asking mom if you can borrow some cumin, and having her give you the whole bottle anyway. Another area where Wild Onion shines is the sheer volume of local products. It is like a little farmers market in a store. While I understand why these products are more expensive than Kroger's, other products came with some sticker shock. Since Wild Onion is small, it likely won't replace your everyday grocery store. However, it can be an excellent supplement, especially if you're looking for something locally grown/made (in the case of bread), or just a bit of a spice. Final note, while interaction has been limited, service was refreshingly kind and welcoming. Thus, Wild Onion won't make it into my regular rotation, but when I need something a little extra special or specific, it will be the first place I go. read more

Don't sleep on Wild Onion Market. I'm from Indianapolis and it reminds me of Georgetown Market. We actually stumbled upon the food court and the chef there is a genius. He is a national treasure. His red beans and rice was amazing ! It was filling with a good mix of spice and heat. He introduced my daughter to vegan fish and she LOVED it. Prices was reasonable and service was top notch. For those who have time to sit and eat, they also have a nice seating area in the grocery store. read more

I gave a 5-Star review because I love Wild Onion Market and want them to succeed, but this is really a 2-Star review of the 4 SUNS Kitchen. I love the 4 SUNS Kitchen too, their fresh juices especially are the best. However, the people working behind the counter often have such a negative attitude, that I feel I am bothering them when I place an order. This past Wednesday, I arrived at 7:40pm, and the person behind the counter had closed already, even though the sign says they are open until 8pm. It's not even such a problem to close a little early; the real problem is that when he saw me at the counter, he did not say anything. A warm greeting of "hello, so sorry we're closed already, but please come again" is all it takes to gain a customer, instead of losing one. read more

So happy to see them open and supporting local producers like PQB, Dark Matter, LaClare, La Quercia, etc. I highly recommend grabbing a po' boy from 4 Suns. The catfish was plump, delicate, with the perfect amount of cayenne. I can't wait to try their okra. read more

First time stopping in and I was really impressed! The prices on produce looked pretty decent to me. Overall I don't think the prices were as high as I was expecting. Everything I was looking for was at a price I found reasonable. They have a really nice array of specialty items and the grocery basics you need. My favorite thing was something I miss dearly from the pre-covid days at Whole Foods: spices in bulk bins. I love being able to get just enough of a spice that I need for a recipe without having to shell out for a whole jar that I may not use. The store is really clean and well organized. The bathroom was very tidy. Everything was easy to find. The store was pretty quiet while I was there. I didn't really need any help other than checking out, but I did see people working who I could've asked if I needed. I don't know if they have every single thing you'd need. The meat section was pretty small, which i appreciate as a way to reduce waste. I did have to stop at another store to get something I thought i would've been able to find. But I liked the store a great deal and hope to go back soon. read more

This place is like if Whole Foods were tiny, which comes with a unique set of pros and cons: Pros -actually employee and community owned (it's a co-op that you can buy into as an owner, either with a one time payment of $250 or monthly installments) and you get a 5% discount -centrally located with good parking and accessible sidewalk -curated selection of locally sourced niche goods from Evanston, Skokie, etc, items you won't see in regular corner stores and neighborhood grocers (Whole Foods feel) Cons -the prepared food section is kinda sad and usually doesn't look great. I've been disappointed with every item I've tried from that, so I stopped buying them. -since they are a tiny store, sometimes they run out of things (but they do get deliveries multiple times a week) -they have a soup bar that has literally never been open whenever I am there (and I've gone at various times of day) -very expensive, especially if you pay the co-op fees I like the idea of this place but hope it continues to improve over time. read more

In January of last year, I lost a major client and was scrambling to find a job to make ends meet. I applied here and never got an answer, so I shrugged about shopping in the store. Never mind that I'm sure they received piles of resumes and I'd never worked in a grocery store (although I'd worked in retail for a few years). It wasn't on my radar anymore when it opened in the summer of 2024, and I'd already found another neighborhood store that had everything I needed. (And a new client!) But yesterday, I FINALLY walked inside because I didn't feel like walking to my go-to grocery store. I was pleasantly surprised to see it looked much different than I envisioned it would. I was imagining more of a Sam's Club vibe. It's more like your neighborhood grocery but with waaaaay healthier options and fresh fruit. In fact, I found a bunch of vegan and vegetarian options that were a few dollars cheaper than what I'm used to paying. To top it all off, there were coupons, which made it even more of a deal. I was ecstatic. About the only con I could think of was a worker walked my way and paused. I wasn't sure if he was pausing to shop or to put something on a shelf, but I asked if he worked there. There was a slight pause before he admitted he did. I pointed out a frozen item I was looking for on sale that had a bunch of completely different items in its spot. He said they were probably out and pushed the "wrong" item over. He didn't bother telling me that this same item was available in the produce section in different packaging. But I saw him leaving the store shortly after, so I think I interrupted his break before he left for the day. (I hated it when that would happen. I would remove my vest or coat to avoid people asking me questions. SORRY!!!) Still, I was able to find the other items on my own, and the cashier was warm and friendly. Overall, it was a great visit. I'll definitely be back because my receipt made me do a celebration dance in my head. I've been missing out for all of 2024 and half of 2025. Gotta rectify that. read more

Just go support the place, you whiney bitches. They are trying hard to bring good, honest food to Rogers Park. Selection is imperfect. Staff are not always the friendliest. But there's a lot of good stuff here, and it's a co-op. They are trying to make things fair and keep money in the community. What more do you want? read more

An "apples-to-apples" comparison is relevant here. True, Wild Onion does not sell the cheapest food in town. But W.O. does sell the cheapest locally-produced healthy food in town. W.O. is banking on members and other customers who will spend a bit more to support a sustainable agricultural system and their own health. Is it idealistic? Yes. Is it necessary? Yes. First can I just say it's absolutely amazing that the Rogers Park community now has a local store that sells fresh, organic foods that are quality! I couldn't be more happier that there is a store that is accessible for everyone. Secondly when you walk in, it's beautiful! Everything is stocked so nicely and makes you want to just roam and wonder for a bit. I frequently come here for my organic half and half and coffee...and Jenni's ice cream! I must say it's nice to have something close and accessible for healthy foods. Now, is it expensive? Yes it is. And can I get some things cheaper from let's say Morse market? Yes I can. But I still like to patronage them because I know what it means for the community. My only thing I want to mention is although they are small, they can run out of things fairly quickly (heavy whipping cream LOL). All in all, it's great and if you catch a sale or coupon they give out, even better! Also the staff are incredibly kind and helpful. So excited to have a grocery co-op in the neighborhoods! I love all the local produce and speciality products, especially those that support a vegetarian diet. They get fresh Publican Quality Bread a few days a week that is so, so delicious. All of the employees are very kind and helpful. It feels nice knowing that my money is supporting our community, vs. going to some billionaire who could care less. read more

Fantastic local market for non-chain grocery shopping. It's like a year-round indoor farmer's market, since many of the produce items are sourced from the same farmers who furnish local farmer's markets during summer months. After some initial snags and issues, Wild Onion's produce section has been getting steadily better over the last month or so, and I'd give it an "A" at this point. Local farm produce just tastes way better than the corporate products sold at regular grocery chains. The Publican Quality Bread is a real draw, too--sourdough whole grain sandwich bread and really tasty baguettes and pastries--along with the bulk dry goods section. The wine selection is stellar. The fresh and frozen meats are fantastic--you'd have to go a long distance to find anything comparable, and many of us are trying to avoid the cruelty-based, hormone-packed corporate meats sold at regular grocery stores (sure, it's more expensive, but just eat a little less of it and be healthier as a result). Many of the prices are higher than regular grocery stores, but you're paying for unflinching quality and trust in what you're eating--as well as taste. After eating locally farmed potatoes from Wild Market, you'll never buy grocery store potatoes again. But you'll find that many of the prices are also cheaper than local grocery stores: nut and oat milks, local eggs, nuts, pesticide-free oatmeal, etc. Overall it's a really great addition to the neighborhood. The best thing about Wild Onion Market is that it considers both the health and the environmental consequences of the products it carries. I have been a price conscious shopper all my life, and over the last several years (or decades) I have learned more about the environmental damage caused by Big Ag. I am willing to pay more for organic and/or local or regional products, and I try to balance price consciousness with other concerns. There are bargains to be had at Wild Onion. Red and green organic grapes for $2.99/lb? YES! I have bought them several weeks in a row. Bulk spices. The Field Day brand canned beans and tomatoes are organic and sold at prices comparable to the conventional items at Valli or other stores. Wild Onion is a new business. It doesn't have the purchasing power of Costco or Aldi, but it is an investment in our community and the world we want to live in. I'm one of more than 2000 owners. I hope the folks leaving negative reviews will give the store another try and use the suggestion box or talk to staff about their needs. read more

Place is very organized and most of the time stocked. I enjoy shopping local and having this place here makes it very easy to do that. Staff is always very friendly and helping me find what I'm looking for. Their local eggs are my absolute favorite and the price isn't too bad. This is my first time visiting this place and I have to say that everything looks great and very organized. The staff cashier seemed very friendly, but the bakery staff didn't even make eye contact to see if I needed something from there which was the main thing I went in there for. I saw the advertisement on the window about the "publican quality bread" it seemed that it had been there since the previous day. There was another person by the vegetable section also no eye contact not even bothered to greet the person next to him or asking perhaps if I need any assistance not sure if they normally do, but it would be very kind to ask your clients if they would like any assistance or something. Not sure if I am coming back, but I sincerely wish the best to the "owners" since I know this place is owned by several people. read more

While in thought it is a wonderful concept the prices border on unconscionable. For example asparagus was 698 a lb while at the chain nearby is 149; Rao's Spaghetti Sauce was 11 when at Valli is 7 or 8 at the most. read more

Joining is an absolute waste of money. Once per month you can get a whopping 5% (not even enough to offset the sales tax) discount on pretentious fad diet buzzword items that you could probably get better deals on through a normal grocery store. You will not save money shopping here, this is not a store for average middle class people. And because this is not a store designed for the people who live in this neighborhood it will never make enough money for the upfront cost of buying a share to be a worthwhile investment. EDIT for Response: I am an owner and I'm telling you it was a mistake to sign up, if I had known the "benefits" would be a once a month 5% discount I never would have signed up because that is not a real benefit. Even if it wasn't a bunch of overpriced nonsense targeted towards gentrification of the neighborhood a once a month 5% discount is a joke. It will never be worth it to spend money on membership. read more
