Hazelnut puddle cookie, butter tart, Nanaimo bar and strawberry macaron
Carolyn L.

This place has like everything nice! We were too late for the freshly baked bread as we came in after lunch. I guess you will need to be here in the morning for that. There are food like salad and sandwich available in the chiller section. You can also get milk, eggs, rice, condiments and specialty products here. The special stuff is also great to buy as gifts. Then you will be dazzled by the baked goods. The cookies, cakes, tarts all looked so good. I bought Nanaimo bar, strawberry macaron, butter tart and hazelnut puddle cookie. They were good and my favorite is the cookie. The texture was different. It was a bit hollow crunchy with real pieces of hazelnuts in it. The butter tart was equally yummy. Perfect with tea or coffee. This is a place I will visit again if I am in Ladysmith.

Vegetable stew - they heat and bring to your table.

This was a super nice little gluten free find! They have wonderful food, all gluten free. We had their vegetable stew (ingredients shown in photo) served over rice. Wonderful on a cold day! We also had a tuna salad sandwich on their gf bread. The little boy next to us was raving about their gf cinnamon roll! We'll definitely be back!! The place is clean and friendly workers too!

Little shop section.

Good food, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty good. Would recommend.

Short version: some of the best gluten-free food I've had in my life (and I've been eating gf for almost a decade, and am a pretty accomplished gf baker.) I come from a city of a few hundred thousand people, and I'd love to have a bistro like this available to me on a regular basis. The food is delicious, varied, and full of interesting flavors. The baked goods are rich and moist (not dry or crumbly like so many gf baked goods can be) the location itself was bright and cheery, and the staff was friendly and helpful in answering the few questions we had. The prices were also quite reasonable for the portions we received. My partner and I stopped by while spending a few days in Nanaimo before driving across the island for a couple weeks in Tofino and Ucluelet. We both needed gluten-free *and* dairy-free food, which generally severely limits our choices. I had the duck ramen with mirin-soaked egg and pickled vegetables, and my partner had the turkey club with cranberry hazelnut compote and green salad. Afterwords, we got some baked goods to go (a cinnamon roll, blackberry scone, vegan chocolate donut w/sprinkles and Nanaimo bar -- all gluten-free!)

mmmmhmm yummy!

Staff is always friendly, busy store but very short wait time. Even if you are not looking for gluten-free their deserts and muffins are far tastier, wholesome and made with better ingredients then regular baked goods. Must try: Raspberry Cream Cheese Muffin....!!!!

Service is friendly, decor is simple. The food here definitely feels healthy and amazing. But there are some ups and downs associated with each dish. Roast Beef Sandwich (2.5/5): Flavor wise, it wasn't too bad. HOWEVER, why would you use processed Kraft American Cheese? This definitely makes the whole sandwich unpleasant. Also, I don't like how they used soft white bread instead of other healthier choices. Salmon Cake (4.5/5): Moist, fishy, and crusty on the outside. Comes with salad and tartar sauce which makes it extra yum. Beets and Seeds Salad with Grilled Salad (5/5): I have to say their salad with the signature poppy seed dressing is really amazing. This dish has all kinds of texture and dimensions of flavors which makes me want more.

Super cute cafe!

Wild Poppy is wildly good Gluten Free! Easy to get to from the highway. Table service or To Go. Coffees and teas are high quality. Food is fresh and fast, nice atmosphere and friendly local place. Stock up on treats for your island adventures!

Great spot for a quick on the go breakfast. I'm not overly fond of their coffee, but that's not their focus.

Each pastry was great but the highlight was the berry cheese danish. We also really liked how the apple danish wasn't extremely sweet and the texture of the carrot cake muffin. The bakery also has coffee and pizza available, but we didn't try any of that. Seating wise, there's both indoor and outdoor seating available for guests and water on tap. The ordering process was smooth but we sat, bussed, and served ourself which was fine.

My husband, of course on his first trip to the island, ordered a cinnamon roll. As he was eating he pulled out a massive dark hair fully baked into the cinnamon roll, and as one does, was completely repulsed and threw it away. Sadly it tarnished is experience of the bakery which I had highly praised and was the first stop on our anniversary trip. Aside from this, the bakery has a variety of pastries that usually go quick in the mornings, my favorite is the chocolate croissant. They also have a full sandwich and pizza shop as well as indoor and outdoor seating areas. Service is always fast and they get your food out to you quickly. Again usually this is our go to so hoping it was just a one off experience.

The Cowichan Valley has so many little food finds that make it special. Saison is at the top of…read morethe list. Driving along one of the country roads in North Cowichan you will find many local vineyards. Saison is in fact a vineyard but they don't specialize in wine tasting. It appears they do grow grapes but sell them to other producers on the island or perhaps they create their own family wine. What they do specialize in is a wonderful bakery. Upon entering the gate you are faced with a beautiful vineyard to the right and a lovely country home with meticulously landscaped grounds to the left. Continue up the driveway to the parking area above a little cottage. Walk down the 10 steps to the patio that overlooks a beautiful field of gardens and Mt. Prevost sticking out in the distance. In the summer there are little tables set out all over the patio along with a small stand filled with fresh produce grown in the gardens you see below. All the produce is picked daily during the season and for sale to the public. The place is filled with lots of locals and on bikers. So many bikers will make this a stop on their bike tour of the island. They come here to enjoy the many delicious baked goods: breads, rolls, pastries, pizza, etc. They also can enjoy coffee, tea and soups. During the summer if you can get your hands on some of their gazpacho you will become a fan! I want their recipe for this amazing nectar of the tomato gods. I would love to see Saison have an evening on the patio. They could hire a musician, pour wine and serve some of their lovely bread with local charcuterie and cheese. Maybe one day but for now you can enjoy all they have to offer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Saison has a great formula and is certainly a destination spot if you come to Vancouver Island for any reason.
