Very nice and clean, popular for certain. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful and brought ordered drinks to our table. The ice cream shop was open next door and connected for seating but idk if that is a constant or just an occasional thing. Not a ton of orderable food options but lots of packaged ready-to-go items and a few bakery goods. I got a raspberry cheesecake fir around $6 and enjoyed throughly. Water in reusable cups was provided, everything seemed to be reusable or compostable aside from saran wrap which is a nice touch and always appreciated. This place has like everything nice! We were too late for the freshly baked bread as we came in after lunch. I guess you will need to be here in the morning for that. There are food like salad and sandwich available in the chiller section. You can also get milk, eggs, rice, condiments and specialty products here. The special stuff is also great to buy as gifts. Then you will be dazzled by the baked goods. The cookies, cakes, tarts all looked so good. I bought Nanaimo bar, strawberry macaron, butter tart and hazelnut puddle cookie. They were good and my favorite is the cookie. The texture was different. It was a bit hollow crunchy with real pieces of hazelnuts in it. The butter tart was equally yummy. Perfect with tea or coffee. This is a place I will visit again if I am in Ladysmith. read more

This was a super nice little gluten free find! They have wonderful food, all gluten free. We had their vegetable stew (ingredients shown in photo) served over rice. Wonderful on a cold day! We also had a tuna salad sandwich on their gf bread. The little boy next to us was raving about their gf cinnamon roll! We'll definitely be back!! Wish they would move the coffee making through to where the sit down area is, and focus on serving the baked goods etc to lessen wait time. The ice cream shop is only serving Island ice cream which has carageenan in its ingredients. That is very disappointing. Can get a huge tub for far less. Our family descended upon the Wild Poppy Bistro today for brunch. It was quite a big group for this cute little bistro but they handled the chaos our family sometimes can bring!! The food was all completely gluten-free AND completely delicious! We ordered the Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese with Mulligatawny Soup. The sandwich had great flavours and texture with the coleslaw and melted cheddar cheese. The soup was a big hit as well...we love Indian flavours. The Steak Fajita Salad was also very good...grilled steak on a bed of lettuce with Guacamole mash, pickled onions, peppers and cucumbers. So fresh and hearty...something you feel good about eating! The burger was also packed full of flavour. Baked goods had great texture and flavour...the butter tarts and the cinnamon buns went well with our cappuccinos! Short version: some of the best gluten-free food I've had in my life (and I've been eating gf for almost a decade, and am a pretty accomplished gf baker.) I come from a city of a few hundred thousand people, and I'd love to have a bistro like this available to me on a regular basis. The food is delicious, varied, and full of interesting flavors. The baked goods are rich and moist (not dry or crumbly like so many gf baked goods can be) the location itself was bright and cheery, and the staff was friendly and helpful in answering the few questions we had. The prices were also quite reasonable for the portions we received. My partner and I stopped by while spending a few days in Nanaimo before driving across the island for a couple weeks in Tofino and Ucluelet. We both needed gluten-free *and* dairy-free food, which generally severely limits our choices. I had the duck ramen with mirin-soaked egg and pickled vegetables, and my partner had the turkey club with cranberry hazelnut compote and green salad. Roast Beef Sandwich (2.5/5): Flavor wise, it wasn't too bad. HOWEVER, why would you use processed Kraft American Cheese? This definitely makes the whole sandwich unpleasant. Also, I don't like how they used soft white bread instead of other healthier choices. Salmon Cake (4.5/5): Moist, fishy, and crusty on the outside. Comes with salad and tartar sauce which makes it extra yum. Beets and Seeds Salad with Grilled Salad (5/5): I have to say their salad with the signature poppy seed dressing is really amazing. Just wow!! We had lunch here today on recommendation of a local. We had a coffee, panini and cob salad. The turkey and chicken were real, roasted in-house meat, not deli. The house poppy vinaigrette was delicious. The veggies fresh and crispy. Fair price for quality and quantity. We loved it so much we went back to pick up pre-prepped meals for dinner. Again, good size portions, fresh veg and yummy sauces (butter chicken and Thai coconut curry. We finished off with the most delectable lemon tart with loads of just sweet enough real whipped cream. Great gluten-free eating! Every time I'm on Vancouver Island I try to find a way to go through Ladysmith so that I can eat at Wild Poppy. As someone who's allergic to wheat, an entirely gluten-free cafe that serves breakfast and lunch, with great desserts (the cheesecake is the bomb!) and good coffee is a big deal. My favorite thing on the menu is the pulled-pork grilled cheese. The portion sizes are decent, although if you have a choice between the salad and soup (as sides), choose the salad. I wish they had pancakes, but what they have is so good that I'm glad to give it 5 stars. Free street parking nearby. The place can get very full, but I've never waited longer than 5 minutes for a table. read more

I was walking down 1st avenue in Ladysmith and this adorable place struck my fancy. I walked in and was a little unsure if I seat myself for table service or order at the till. I walked over to the till and reviewed the menu. A waiter came out and told me I could take a seat and he would be over to take my order. It's a small bistro with approximately 20 seats. The seating area is in a small front area with artwork of wild poppies hung up. There's a dessert display case and a small selection of local dry goods to the right. I ordered the lentil soup and a Chai Latte. The soup was nice and the Chai was a bit sweet for me. Overall it was a pleasant and lovely place to stop in. There wasn't a lot of vegan options but some decent ones. The price is average and worth the money they ask. I would stop in again. read more

I read many great reviews on Yelp so I decided to visit this place for lunch on a Tuesday. I ordered the two salmon fish tacos with salad and chose the dill dressing. My wife had the vegetarian quiche and mushroom soup. There was a generous portion of salmon in each taco however both tacos lacked flavor despite the salsa and taco sauce. Inclusion of some cilantro and extra chiptole sauce would make the tacos tastier. The salad was full of good nutritious tasty ingredients and was excellent; hence I rated my meal a 4. Unfortunately, the quiche my wife had was quite greasy throughout and she should have returned it. There were plenty of mushrooms in her soup, however it was quite watery. How is it there is only one review for his amazing gluten free gem that all of Vancouver Island should be proud to call their own???!!! I first stumbled on the Wild Poppy Bistro by accident and I am so happy I did. I don't think I've had a single thing here that I have not been happy with. Now not everything is my favourite but there are a "few" pretty awesome things worth mentioning: - thumbprint cookies with ooey gooey jam (Wild Poppy: please make sure enough jam to cookie ratio!); - white chocolate blackberry scones are entirely brilliantly reminiscent of real gluten containing scones; - french bread ~ good god bless their souls it is lofty, just chewy enough, moist, glutinous (whaat?? How?!! ) and praised by celiac and non-celiacs alike!!! - granola (by the bag) is fabulously nutty, just enough fruit and lightly spiced; - beef dip (on that brilliant french bread) is massive and no shortage of fresh flavourful beef; - lime/lemon tart brilliant (one crust was a hint overcooked and the flours can taste a little bitter); - cheesecake.... Fantastic! Even their house salads and salad dressing are fresh, flavourful and absolutely not plain! Grated carrot, beets, artisan greens and homemade creamy dill dressing. Last but not least, while their bread prices are not terribly far off from most gluten free restaurants, their bread is enormous, very expertly crafted and worth every penny. The rest of their baked goods and lunch menu are an incredible price and value with much of their prices being a better value than your average cafe. If you are celiac and used to being gouged for mediocre food, you will recognize that this is incredible value. On the one hand, I wish they were in Nanaimo. For a light lunch, I had their version of fish and chips: unbattered tahini and kale crusted cod, house made polenta fries, and a radish and snap pea slaw. This little bistro is worth stopping by in Ladysmith. Service is pleasant and attentive. Many items on the menu are gluten free and peanut free. I decided to order a light lunch before boarding the Nanaimo ferry. My salad with roasted beets, fresh greens, hazelnuts, and goat cheese was served with a cup of minestrone soup (with a freshly baked roll). I would say that this was the best salad I've tasted in a long time. The sweetness of the beets, toasted flavour of the hazelnuts, crunch of the greens, the creamy goat cheese, and the mild acidity of the vinaigrette complemented each other perfectly. I have been wanting to visit this place for awhile and today was finally the day!! And I'm happy to say I was not disappointed. I got a grilled pastrami sandwich and it was incredible. I followed this with half a brownie and Nanaimo bar me and a friend shared, the only thing I was disappointed about was that they sell out of their baking quite fast and you have to come back another day since they only make so much, which is a good thing but also not such a good thing aha.
