An adorable B&B in an old and clearly loved Victorian house... Chip was a hoot and we loved meeting Mr. Tucker (the house dog). The backyard was gorgeous despite not being in bloom. Husband booked us the bedroom with two twin beds and it was a experience of wicker, flowered bedspreads and bunnies who may have seen too much. To be fair, it was reminiscent of my Grandmother's bedroom when I was a kid but we thought it was fun and rolled with it. Breakfast was wonderful and inclusive of so many things - the grilled pineapple was fantastic. Despite only staying one night, Chip invited us to return during the next day if we needed anything - it kinda felt like we were staying with family. Welcoming from the moment we arrived, Brad and Cindy are the BEST! From the history of the B&B itself to the history of the area - there is so much to do and see; Longwood Gardens are right down the road as well as the Brandywine battlefield and so much more - great restaurants right down the road too - and when you want to relax - the gardens out back are the ticket! Beautifully maintained with plenty of places to sit and drink up the scenery. Not to mention an awesome fire pit for those cooler evenings. The breakfasts are AMAZING!! Brad and Cindy are top-notch, high quality people that are so kind and helpful! I live quite far away and chose this adorable spot as a venue to throw a friends baby shower- Brad was so helpful in organizing the event, giving me a video tour of the space, and helping us book adjoining rooms for an additional girls night celebration. Unfortunately, the COVID19 pandemic hit the region hard a day or two before our event and we had to cancel. This was a really difficult decision for the event organizers and mama-to-be to make, and Brad's and Cindy's kindness, generosity, and understanding and willingness to work with us through this unique situation was so memorable. I have worked in hotels and restaurants for over a decade, and rarely do you encounter such kind, helpful, and genuine people in this industry as Brad and Cindy. We stayed two nights in the Longwood Room. Chip and Cheryl were very gracious and friendly hosts. PRO: * Breakfast was outstanding! We had a spinach/egg dish the first morning, fresh scones, and excellent coffee. On Sunday, breakfast was baked French toast that was outrageously delicious and there was cinnamon toast. Chip was very accommodating about my girlfriend's aversion to eggs and made her pancakes. * The location is excellent for getting to Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, etc. It's on Baltimore Pike and I imagine in the summer the room would have been noisy but on a cold night in March, it was fine. * The owner upgraded us from the John Marshall room (bathroom in the hall) to the Longwood Room (bath in the room) for the same price. CON: * Greeted by a messy reception area when we walked in. * There are a LOT of tschochkies all over the place. The Longwood room was afloat in doodads. The bathroom had a lot of cracks, the windows could use replacing, the blinds were raggedy. * Unless you remove it from the electric warmer, someone lights a scented candle at night in the room. * If you like white wicker, you'll love the Longwood room. There's a lot of it packed into a small-ish space. * We cracked up when we saw the TV was a non-HD and inside a cupboard near the top of the ceiling. We went to Appleby's to watch the Villanova game. * Speaking of wires: There were a lot of electric wires strung all over the place. My GF had me rolling on the floor when she said, "I have a fear of unsafe things." She worries about fires. * Didn't want to spend a lot of time in the room because it felt crowded with doodads and frankly, seemed very tired and worn down. * All the heat seemed to be coming from the bathroom. If you leave the bathroom door closed, the room isn't heated well. Bottom line: I don't know if I'd stay there again and if I did, I'd pick a different room. We looked into others and they seemed more grownup. We didn't have a terrible experience but if I got my hands on the Inn, I'd throw out 95% of the junk, give what's left a good scrubbing, & let the house shine through. read more

I'm actually offended that someone gave this place one star. The owners, Chip and Cheryl, are incredibly friendly and hospitable. Yes, there are chotchkies everywhere. I think that is just their style though. The "history lesson" was also not my style, but informative none the less. We had a very enjoyable stay. Chip and Cheryl definitely went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable - they drove us over to Longwood Gardens and picked us up, had a fire waiting for us when we returned, and included vegetarian sausage in the breakfast since I don't eat meat. This is not a place to go for a weekend away with a group - definitely more for a romantic retreat, a place to stay for business, or an alternative to a big box hotel. read more

After receiving a glowing recommendation, my husband inquired about staying one weekday night at the Pennsbury Inn with our six-month-old. Instead of providing us with lodging information, we received a response indicating that the owners believed our child would be a disturbance to everyone at the Inn. After a few more emails, it became very clear that we would not be welcome, despite the fact that it was a "slow time" and that there were "lots of rooms available". I can only assume that all other guests and the house dog at the Inn communicate very, very quietly, and that no one has ever used a room for any activity other than reading or meditating in silence. read more

It might not seem like a nice place at first but the second you walk in you get the true bed and breakfast feel. Everyone is so inviting especially the dog Tucker. The rooms are absolutely adorable and the perfect size. The breakfast is delicious and it's in a perfect distance from Longwood Gardens. read more

We stayed 2 nights in this fantastic historical 1714 B and B when we brought our dog for dental surgery in town. It EXCEEDED our expectations . Brad and Cindy are new owners and such delightful hosts,made us very comfortable and welcome. And PET friendly The breakfasts are delicious and healthy and plentiful. Coffee is terrific and always available. The gardens and grounds are beautiful. Windows all over give light and scenery. We stayed on the first floor with a pvt entrance so we could take the dog out for breaks. Comfortable bed, nice acoutrements. Huge fireplaces keep you cozy. Brad and Cindy made us feel totally at home and we really appreciated that. They have a marvelous attitude and we enjoyed it so much we plan to return for a long weekend. The Longwood Gardens are close by and Brandywine battlefield ,great restaurants and adorable close by historic towns as well. This is the place to stay when in the Brandywine area. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Pennysbury Inn this past weekend. We stayed in the Winterthur room. We're in our late 20s and it was probably the most we've ever paid for vacation lodging, but it was worth every penny! Our room had a palladian window with a view of the garden, which was breathtaking! The Inn is located right next to a busy highway, but once you enter the tranquil grounds you totally forget about that. Chip and Cheryl were the sweetest hosts and the food was delicious! I'm sort of a clean freak, and yes, per the other reviews on this site, there are lots of little trinkets, but I think that gives this place the charm that I loved so much. I, personally, expect that at a bed and breakfast. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily return! read more

My husband and I just enjoyed a wonderful anniversary getaway at this lovely inn. We always choose to stay at a bed and breakfast because it has an atmosphere and personality that a hotel can never offer. With that being said, we have met a wide range of innkeepers. Chip and Cheryl were wonderful in every way. They made us feel at home and special. The historical tour given by Chip was entertaining and informative and the breakfast was tasty. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed myself here. I am not sure if it was the inn keepers genuine friendliness or the rustic charm the inn gives off but by the time I walked into my room, I was falling in love with the inn. The rooms are not these modern rooms (like you would find at certain hotels or resorts). However, the quaint charm of the room gave off a "home away from home" feel. Breakfast wasn't to my taste (as there were a lot of sweet tastes and I prefer a more saltier palette) but it wasn't an issue since there was much to choose from. Overall, I enjoyed my stay very very very much. So much so that I've already decided to return the next time I visit the area. read more

I recently spent a girls' weekend in the Brandywine River Valley that was lovely *in spite of* our two-night stay at the Pennsbury Inn. The Inn enhanced our experience only by providing us with common spaces for gossip and games and ample fodder for stories. A positive Inn/B&B experience depends on the hospitality of the owners, the cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations and the quality of the food. All elements at the Pennsbury deserve only a single star. Upon our arrival, the innkeepers were more harried than welcoming. They claimed they were expecting six of us even though we had made a reservation for eight (which led to a rapid assembly of cots), the very able male innkeeper made no offer to help carry our bags up the narrow winding steps, he declared he would not be putting fresh flowers in our room because he didn't want to go out in the rain to cut them (p.s. we never would have known the flowers were missing if he hadn't mentioned them), and he didn't want to give us the historic tour of the house because the group was arriving in three shifts and he didn't want to repeat himself. (He promised to give us the tour the following day, but the next day he never followed up on the offer.) We had confirmed with the innkeepers well in advance that we would be using their kitchen to cook dinner the first evening. Yet when we arrived the kitchen counters (which look pristine on the website) were cluttered with plants, dried flowers, jamming jars and dishes, and the refrigerator - which released an unpleasant odor - had barely any room for our wine and produce. Last on the hospitality list, we were surprised when the female innkeeper told us to fold up our used cloth napkins at the end of dinner so we could reuse them for breakfast. She told us they were trying to save water. I'm all for helping the environment, but surely they had enough extra napkins to save us from wearing tomato sauce on our lap while we ate waffles the next morning. Like the kitchen, the bedrooms had far more clutter than pictured on the website. (All of those pictures must have been taken a while ago. That, or the owners shoved all the stuffed animals, paperback books, candle warmers and other chotchkes under the bed when the camera crew came.) Only the biggest room had air conditioning and opening the window in the smallest revealed an inside frame filled with dirt and dead bugs. There were teddy bears on our pillows (which I imagine do no go into the washer with the sheets), and in the evening, one innkeeper flicked on a warmer that turned an old Bloomingdales candle into a pool of strong-scented liquid wax that made me queasy in the middle of the night. (The candle was on the bed table next to my head.) Elements of the breakfast were good: fresh bread, miniature muffins, a yogurt parfait. But the coffee was weak, afternoon snacks (such as cheese puffs, chocolate-covered pretzels and animal crackers) were stale, and to top it all off - in this case the topping was for our main breakfast dish - they used fruit that we had brought with us to garnish our waffles. They apologized, but it seems a bit suspicious that they would have forgotten what they purchased at the supermarket. read more

So my wife and I arrive, from California(late plane) about 2:00 a.m.( probably closer to 3:00 a.m) and Cheryl is waiting up for us. Not only that,but she's being real nice and friendly. I grew up in New Jersey, and I know that trick. You know the one where you act extra nice, and all, and then, when the time is right, BOOM, you get even! Well any way, we go to bed in this very nice bedroom, but I don't sleep to good, wondering what's in store for us.We go downstairs for coffee, early, and Chip is up and preparing breakfast, and says he knows about us arriving late and hopes we were comfortable, and got some sleep, and on and on being nice, friendly, and extra hospitable. I quickly realize that Cheryl and Chip are a tag team, and this could be worse than I thought. I change the subject to coffee. I'm an annoying coffee snob, and I don't expect coffee worthy of drinking, anywhere, except in our home, and some elite coffee shops (and thats only if my favorite barista is working). In other words I really want and need a cup of coffee, but I'm not expecting anything even close to palatable. I just need coffee for medicinal reasons. Chip goes on about how they selected the coffee for the Inn, and how he had numerous coffee lovers rate the different coffees,and decided , what I.m hesitating to sip. And the first sip tastes good! I take another, its so good, and I finish the cup. Between you and me the coffee is really good, ( lots of chocolates, stone fruits, leather,etc) but officially I give it a "meh", because I want to keep my coffee snob status. During my second cup, as wonderful aromas of breakfast cooking are stirring my appetite, a wave of fear overcomes me. Then the caffeine stimulated realization suddenly clicks, and I know I'm in over my head! I seldom eat breakfast, but when Chip offers special pancakes, sausage, fruit smoothie, and orange juice, it's like another person with my voice answers for me, "yes please, that would be great". And it is GREAT! After breakfast we get a little tour of the 1714 home. I find myself wishing we had creaky floors, and beams of exposed timbers in our home in California. I look at at the rustic but beautiful fireplaces,and wish it was cold enough to have a fire, especially the fireplace that is big enough to walk in. Looking into the gardens through wavy glass windows, the green lushness is calming, and I try to imagine it snow covered. BOOM! They got me! We must return! read more

For my first stay, I had a wonderful and pleasant experience with my girlfriend. When we first arrived, I was impressed by the landscape, which is a certified nature reserve and impressed by the beauty of the historical home. When we first walked in, it felt very warm and comforting as if visiting family. Chip checked us in then gave us a tour with the historical background of the home which I enjoyed. While escorting us to our room, Chip had apologized for not being able to carry our things due to his hip complications at the time; which we were completely fine with. We stayed in the John Marshall room which I found quite cozy. It did have a small tv but didn't need to have one at all because the reason of the visit was to get away from technology and enjoy our company. As for the decor, I felt it gave the room character and added to the experience of staying at such a historical home. Our bathroom was clean and was actually more modern than I had anticipated. The floor was tiled which looked very nice however was very cold this time of year and I wish I had brought some slippers but my socks did just fine. The location was close to everything: Longwood Gardens, Chadds Ford Winery, and Kennett Square which was everything we wanted to check out! After sight-seeing, we enjoyed a nice cup of tea (were pleased with the wide selection) and played Scrabble and Pictionary. We had a great time conversing by an open fire while drinking wine and eating our spread of cheese and crackers. We were delighted with the evening snack, provided by Cheryl, of some kind of delicious pastry!! As for breakfast we enjoyed the homemade breads and spreads along with our breakfast wraps, french toast and bacon. My favorite was her homemade spread made from almonds. Overall, it was everything I had expected topped off with Chip's funny stories, historical facts and Cheryl's delicious goods. read more

I was very disappointed with the room, it was very expensive and far from worth it. to get to the room we had to climb winding stairs that to me appeared quite dangerous, we entered the room and I cound not believe it, it was worn and tired, very crowded with teddy bears etc. it was so crowded we could barely move,the walpaper was horrific,the TV was this tiny old set. Just concluded my fourth stay at The Pennsbury Inn. This is definitely an Inn For All Seasons- two fantastic wood-burning fireplaces (which Chip is glad to start for you at a moment's notice) and extensive, lovely grounds outdoors. The inn is built in four sections, the first from 1714, the second from 1860 and the other two sections more contemporary. In spite of its age, it is well kept, charming and welcoming. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and if you need anything, Chip and Cheryl are only too happy to help you out. Yes, the tv's are small, but I don't go to an historic inn to watch TV! The innkeepers are always ready to offer sightseeing and dining suggestions, and also offer the opportunity to buy your tickets to Longwood and other area attractions at the Inn, so you can bypass the timed-tickets and long lines. Breakfasts are delicious, multi-course affairs, and Chip and Cheryl are perfectly willing to alter the menu to accommodate special dietary needs. I highly recommend The Pennsbury Inn. read more
