Great food. Stopped in a client. Had the burger. A little too much tartar sauce but otherwise good. Fries were very good as well.

Home of the Famous Bologna Sandwich…read more That's the bold claim G & R Tavern has been making in Waldo, Ohio for more than 60 years, and judging by the line waiting outside when we arrived shortly after noon, plenty of people believe it. Located in a village of about 300 residents, G & R Tavern has become one of Ohio's most popular destination restaurants. Visitors come from all over the state to try the sandwich that put this small-town tavern on the map. Founded in 1962 by George Yake and Roy Klingel, G & R Tavern has become a true Ohio institution. In 1985, Rick's family purchased the restaurant and has continued the tradition ever since. During our visit, I had the opportunity to speak with Rick and learn that the next generation is already preparing to carry on the family tradition. In a time when many independent restaurants struggle to survive from one generation to the next, that's something worth celebrating. The atmosphere is exactly what longtime fans have come to love. Wood-paneled walls, a bustling dining room, homemade pies in the dessert case, and an old-school charm that feels increasingly rare today. Even the cash-only policy somehow feels right at home here. As for the famous sandwich, it continues to live up to its reputation. This Ohio classic features a thick-cut slice of fried bologna topped with melted American cheese, sweet pickles, and onion on a soft bun. It's simple, flavorful, and easy to understand why people continue making the trip to Waldo year after year. Perhaps the strongest endorsement came from my wife, who ordered the fried bologna sandwich as well. That's not something she would normally choose, but she thoroughly enjoyed it. The fries were hot and crispy and made a great companion to the meal. Some places become popular for a season. Places like G & R Tavern become part of Ohio's history. They were OK also. Where my visit suffered was in the customer service space. I was off put initially how the greeter man was adamant about standing outside while they wait for a cleared table. Then we got seated and it took 25 minutes for anyone to ask "have you been helped yet?" From that point on chasing down serve staff became the name of the game. Since I stopped on my way back from Hocking Hills to Toledo, I was really looking forward to this experience. Ended up being pretty disappointed. If it matters, it did appear that they serviced their local regular customers with an abundance of warmth & haste. Looked like they had a great experience.

But there were families with young kids there, so it was more atmospheric than anything else. We got wings for the appetizer and they were good. Sauce on the side as we asked for 2 different kinds. Garlic Parm and I think the other was a honey bourbon. Tasty! My wife got a ham steak with a side of a baked sweet potato. She was impressed with it. I got the Fathead burger (bacon on the side) with fries. It was 1/2 pound of goodness. Our server said it was made from fresh (not frozen) beef. Service was good and we will definitely go back!

We ordered boneless wings and a foldover. The wings were supposed to come with the bbq sauce on the side, they came covered in it. No biggie mistakes happen. The foldover was just terribly average and somewhat dry as compared to what we have gotten in the past. Will we be back to Fatheads....certainly we will, we are writing today off as everyone can have a bad day now and again. One truly negative thing that both the wife and I noticed today. It was downright chilly in there. The heating needs to be turned up for sure
