I have been going to The Steer Barn as a young child. It became the fancy place our parents took us to learn how to eat with table manners in public. Met friends here for dinner - they had been here before with positive reviews. I ordered the flat iron steak - that night's special was béarnaise sauce and I thought that would be a great combo. For my sides I got fries and a Cesare salad. The salad was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. The wait staff then came out to tell me that the sauce was being taken off the menu as it had curdled, so I would just be getting the plain steak. I wasn't thrilled by that but just went ahead with it. The fries are crisp and a bit peppery, which normally I wouldn't mind. But my steak was also peppery, and it just got too overwhelming for me. I left over half of it on my plate, I just couldn't eat it. Had the sauce been on it I probably would have been fine, but without it was an issue. My friends and I sat and chatted for a while after dinner (our reservations were at 7pm) and a few minutes after 9pm they started turning off the lights so we had to get out of there which was kind of a put off. Seems pretty early to close on a Saturday. Overall it wasn't a terrible dinner but I won't be eager to go back. read more

A group of us went, it was my first time eating there. And my last, unfortunately. One in the group got an appetizer of mushrooms that was served cold! I got a sirloin steak that was cooked perfectly, but pretty tasteless and chewy. The others got filets and ribeyes that were ordered medium but came overcooked. Finally, I got desert, cheesecake ($9) with blueberries (another $1) that tasted nothing like cheesecake.... not dense, but fluffy (!) and tasteless. The food was quite expensive and not at all worth the price. We politely told our server about the cold appetizer and overcooked steaks, yet nothing was deducted from the bill. Excellent experience! Haven't been there since Covid, but the experience remains the same. Sat at the bar and Chris (and all of the other staff) took really good care of us. Ordered the beef short ribs. Tender and delicious! The sides were also very good. Great hospitality and they gave us plenty of extras to take home with our leftovers (since the portion are abundant). They started us off with a nice basket of bread and garlic toast that came along with our drinks. For drinks, the cocktail menu looked delicious but we both went for craft beers. The craft beer selection wasn't large but what was available was unique and tasty. We started with the stuffed mushrooms app which came out quickly. Note: we got so much food with our entree we didn't need an app, but... The mushrooms were large, firm, fresh, and mild in flavor. The stuffing was flavorful and the cheese... thick and gooey. We also got a bowl of French onion soup. The soup was definitely a stand out. While the broth had a rich beefy flavor, it didn't overpower the nice flavor of the onions. Pair this with the dense piece of French bread, which didn't got soggy, and ample melted cheese and yes, a stand out dish. Most if not all the entrees come with a quaint relish tray of potato salad, pea salad, and carrot salad. Don't skip the carrots!! Carrots are my least favorite, but this stuff is delicious. Save a few bites for the end of the meal. It's slightly sweet and a nice palate cleanser. We also received a side salad of crisp and fresh greens with a delicious blue cheese dressing. I ordered the shrimp entree and choose the baked, seafood stuffing version with a side of grilled asparagus. The shrimp were huge and very fresh. The stuffing has to be homemade and was cooked perfectly with the shrimp. My husband got an off menu special, 10 oz, medium, Wagyu sirloin and baked potato. Please note as of 2020, the Steer Barn has changed owners and the name is now Boone's Steer Barn. We were a group of 6 who asked for a side room as we were going to be a long time socializing and playing dominoes as a family. First off, our server was TOP NOTCH. She was friendly, accommodating, and attentive. We didn't want for anything. We can be a large group with questions and needs and she answered and met every one with a smile. There is a full bar that has nice variety, including local wine and beer selections. The local beer is quite good and worth a try if you like local crafts. You will get a bread basket with soft bread and butter and crispy garlic toast. The garlic toast is delicious! We asked for another basket because we couldn't stop nibbling on the garlicky, buttery goodness. Next comes the trio of relishes. Selections include peas and peanuts, cottage cheese, carrot salad, potato salad, broccoli salad, and more. We had two with 6 different selections since we had a large party. All choices were fresh and tasty. Many dinners come with a side salad, which was a nice selection of crisp, fresh greens. It wasn't swimming in dressing, which was nice. Let's discuss my main course. I had the coulotte steak. I'm a steak eater and I was surrounded by steak eaters. I've had steak in some pretty fancy places and paid a good amount for incredible steak. Not even the most expensive steak on the menu, I can tell you this steak was one of the single best steaks I've ever had. It is local beef. They truly live up to the name "Steer Barn". My medium was cooked to absolute perfection. It was seasoned perfectly to compliment yet not overpower the flavor of the beef. The sweet potato was hot, fresh, and delicious. As if all that food wasn't enough, we shared peanut butter cake and German chocolate cake; both rich and delicious. Two of us, more food than we *should* eat, 3 beers, and high quality food with large portions. Our bill was less than $50. Well worth the quality, service, and experience. Go to Boone's Steer Barn. Well we came up to upper Sandusky to grab a couple things. Stopped at the Steer Barn to eat , we like to try different restaurants . If you want a mediocre meal for $$$$$$ come on to the steer barn. $27 bucks for what supposed to been a 10 oz steak! Luke warm hard bake potato. Surprise that the broccoli and Alfredo noodles were good not hot but Luke warm as well! Sweet tea I didn't care for didn't even finish the glass. My beautiful wife got the shrimp she said it was good but her fry's were cold and broccoli was like warm. The desserts were good I had the cheesecake wife had the custard thing I can't say lol. They was tasty ! The waitress was awesome and helpful she was a sweetheart! But if you want a way overpriced meal go here for what you can get at Dennys cheaper! Your eating in a barn that it looked ok to a point. Enter look wonderful then the dining room as old carpet. It would been better with hardwood foods to go with the barn theme. Wife and myself went for the second time, will be are last. Food was great first time. Not so much the second visit. Wife ordered filet rare, it was severed medium. I brought it up to what I believe to be a manager. Wife was asked if she wanted to send back. Now she said no because it took a very long time to be served and to receive out food and she just didn't want to wait along time again. The manager seen it was a filet and told my wife "well it's a filet it's thicker that's why" ok don't blame what we order. Then she offered her free dessert which in fact wasn't free we got charged for it. so we paid over $50 for a steak that was cooked improperly to make up for it was for dessert which we were told would be free and we were charged at this time I was aggravated because the waitress had been gone with my credit card for more than 10 minutes I wanted my card I wanted to leave worst experience that in a very long time Also to be aware not even close to being busy read more

This place is up there in quality with the best steakhouses of the East or Chicago. The cocktails are as well made as any in NYC or Chicago and priced at 35% less. The steaks are top shelf, huge and perfectly cooked to order. They know what medium rare means here. Service was prompt and professional. When I call in, the person answering the phone recognizes me and knows that I am probably ordering the Prime Rib or the Grilled Salmon. This was my first time going to The Steer Barn since it changed owners. I was happy to see that the garlic toast and relish tray remained, but was disappointed that the loaves of warm bread were replaced with some soft and tasteless pre-cut loaf. The waitress asked what we wanted on our relish tray and we chose pea salad, carrot salad, and potato salad. The recipes seem unchanged. Unfortunately, the peas in the pea salad came to the table frozen. Not really, really cold. FROZEN. When they thawed, they were fine. The menu has been edited quite a bit. Entrees no longer come with a salad, and the soup selection was lackluster (I think it was vegetable soup and chili?). My husband had the coulotte steak special and it was cooked perfectly. I had broiled sea scallops, which are now in an overwhelming scampi sauce. The scallops were nicely cooked, but the spices in the sauce were too strong and fought with the sweetness of the scallops. Overall, it was a nice experience. The decor has improved for the better, and I think the smaller menu was a wise decision. For the cost, I think a little side salad and a fully-thawed appetizer are expected. read more

Just reopened yesterday August 6,2020 - called and made a reservation which I'm glad we did for a Friday eve 6:30 pm - it got very busy by 7:30 pm- waiting to be seated. Started with a barn margarita and stuffed mushrooms appetizer- ohhh my gosh - delicious!! The relish salads - potato salad, cottage cheese & a new angel hair pasta was wonderful with the garlic toast and herb bread basket(the herb bread is amazing). The main side salad served tiny - just right -but ohh soooo good with the house dressing celery seed. Then onto main course - my daughter ordered prime rib meal and I ordered sea scallops, we both got baked potatoes with butter & sour cream - we barely touched it due to being full from previous appetizers , salads & bread - so we boxed it up to bring home with us!! New and Improved! I was a little worried when I read that the interior had changed and the menu had some updates- if it's not broke, why fix it? However, the "old Steer Barm" was good, the "new Steer Barn" is great! We were a party of 8 on a Tuesday night. We had lots of cocktails that were perfectly mixed. Barn Margarita is by far their signature drink. The new menu has excellent choices and is well laid out. The new interior is brighter and cleaner. (Many in our party worked at the steer barn as bus kids back in the day- our first reaction was that it looks and feels clean now). We ordered one of every appetizer except the mussels and chicken livers- all were excellent, but do yourself a favor and get the lobster macaroni and cheese. You won't regret it. Lazy Susan's of relishes are still there - thank God! Carrots and raisins and the potato salad that everyone loves didn't change. Salads were on a plate- excellent greens, but to easy to push the lettuce off the plate. Glass salad plate with curved edges would be nice to keep it all together. Signature prime rib is still the best. Filet mignon can be cut with a butter knife. The lobster tail was a little on the small side. Broccoli was ok, didn't seem crisp. Backed sweet potato was great too. One dessert and 8 spoons. The server recommended the cheese cake - she knew her menu like the back of her hand. Barn coffee is like Christmas in a Mug- you won't regret it. Areas of improvement: we should have specified we wanted the appetizers before the relishes. The table was full of relish plates and appetizer plates with all the appetizers and relishes at the same time. Server/bus kid didn't keep on top of clearing the table. I hate stacking our plates and handing them to the server to have them removed. Steer Barn dropped their signature loaf of bread with the meal - I used to love that, but no more. :-( Still the best place in Wyandot county by far with a great ambiance, drinks, and food. read more

We had reservations and were seated right away. Our server didn't inform us of specials or soup of the evening. My husband ordered a soda which didn't arrive with my water for almost 10 minutes. I had to ask a different server to bring his drink. My husband ordered a steak with a baked potato. I ordered crab legs with a cup of soup. The soup was not brought out pre-meal, it was brought out with my meal. I did not end up eating it due to it not coming out first. If you are considering getting crab legs ask the market value price, as it may be less expensive to add them to a steak. The other servers filled our drinks often. The food was excellent. Delicious, huge portion of melt in your mouth prime rib. Fun barn atmosphere. Reasonable prices for what you get. We are 2 women and we split an order of the prime rib -- and it was plenty. Plus it comes with a salad, side dish, garlic bread AND our own small loaf of warm bread. Plus you get 3 appetizers or "relishes", which were old school, in a good way (this whole place is old school, BTW). Our relishes were a carrot salad, cottage cheese, and something else (I can't remember). Garlic toast is served right away - It use to be MUCH better than it is now, not sure why. This was followed by a choice of three relish salads, carrot salad was excellent, the pea salad was still mostly frozen and could not be eaten. Our steaks were excellent, both done med. just as we requested. The baked potatoes were over cooked, skin was hard to cut. All in all I have to give a three star on this location for this trip. That said, I was not expecting a big city steakhouse, and the meal was certainly adequate, however not sure I would stop again. On the plus side, bartender was wonderful, and drinks were mixed perfectly, and he was very friendly and attentive. My filet was also good. On the minus side, every time we wanted our server, we had to ask the bartender to find her. When we didn't order right away, she pretty much just disappeared. Scallops were also not the freshest I have ever had, and they did not have a single green vegetable as a side choice. Price was a bit high considering the quality of the food. Highlights of the meal included the Italian dressing on the salad- I don't know what was in it, but it had a little bit of spiciness that was unusual and I liked it a lot. Portion size was great- it was a terrible temptation to really overdo things. I got the prime rib- it was solid, but not "write home about it" good. I certainly wouldn't turn down another slice if I'm in the area again. Service was decent- the biggest complaint is that I think the plate was sitting in the kitchen waiting for a while because the meat was barely warm and the baked potato was no longer really hot.
