Cougar was referred to us by another tradesperson we've used and he was happy to help us with a leaking internal roof drain in our 1920's recessed flat roof that had been giving us issues since we bought our house over 35 years ago. Cougar worked with us cooperatively and after some further investigation, he came up with a new solution that necessitated working with our roofing contractor, who he worked with closely. The solution was to create a new external drain that turned out to be a great permanent fix. Cougar was very cooperative, proactive, and flexible as the project evolved. His workmanship is excellent and he and his crew worked very hard and skillfully. I had originally had Cougar come help me with some finish carpentry work on a wooden stair project I was working on in my home. Putting seven wooden planks in and calling it a day is not what I was looking for. I really needed some with a similar mindset on both the craft and meticulous level of detail to get a really sophisticated look. Cougar reminded me that he had a background in engineering so I felt at ease already knowing that he would be precise with his cuts. I remember him drawing out very detailed sketches and measurements for the steps, because they would have to fit perfectly in. Cougar's got a great set of tools, experience and wisdom in both his trade and world at large. He has taught me some things along the way. I loved the results of the stairs and so I had him follow up with putting in some cherry wood baseboards to match my hardwood floors. We paired up as a team: I stained and prepped the wood, while he did the precise installation. Cougar was all prepared with his pressurized trim nailer gun and professional gear. He would work very diligently and sometimes be critical of his own work along the way. Trust me, using a set amount of wood and doing the angle cuts to make sure the gap where two pieces meet at 90 degrees is minimal takes a lot of math to avoid wasting. Cougar excelled here and saved me time since I didn't have to re-order the special wood. Cougar and Rick did a lot of work for us last fall, and overall did a really nice job. They helped totally transform our once-crappy kitchen into a really pleasant, light-filled space that we really enjoy spending time in. They laid down new bamboo flooring, installed a dishwasher and washer/dryer and busted out two walls to install windows and beautiful French doors. Cougar basically remodeled my entire outdated, unusable kitchen into a highly functional work space. We bought our first house and I was excited to convert the garage into an office. I am an idiot, but was at least smart enough to give up pretty quickly. Cougar caulked and sealed the unfinished garage, hung baseboards, painted windowsills and doors, mounted a TV, and customized an IKEA bookshelf within an inch of its life to hide all of the unsightly cords that came along with the job. I asked cougar to help me to build high shelves for me in my living room so i could store about 30 bankers boxes there. i needed them suspended so that my 84" free-standing book-cases would be able to move freely beneath them. Cougar gave me a design that really blew me away. my neighbors love my shelves, and so do I. my only "critique" is that they seemed lightly over-built. as time goes on, though, I am more and more comfortable with the likelihood that even in a major earthquake my shelves will remain standing. I found cougar by accident so I decided to call it took at least two days for him to call me back but when he did he was able to come in the next day and look at my bathtub problem. Once he started looking at it he gave me a quick estimate but told me he won't really know until he starts working on it. Took him two days to finish but in his defense my bathtub was very old and had more problems than we anticipated. We had a leak in our roof and hired Cougar to help. The leak had supposedly been fixed by a different contractor the previous year, but as the rains started, the water was coming in again. Cougar did a thorough investigation, opening as much of the ceiling as was necessary to find where the water was coming in, and locating it by the centimetre. After the roof was patched he also wanted to test it before putting the dried insulation and the ceiling back together, so we waited for the next big rain, and sure enough, no more water coming in. We are more than happy with the work, and so appreciative of his careful attention to every detail. Re-making the ceiling was a challenging job, and he had to work around light fixtures that couldn't be taken out, but now that it is done it looks like the leak never happened! Our project requires someone who has experience in cabinetry, painting, drywall and general handyman/fix it skills, it's not even something we needed done immediately, which I explained in my communications. We worked with Cougar for a kitchen 'facelift' that included relocating electrical sockets/switches, demo of old cabinets and drop soffits, demo/installation of rangetop, new floating shelves... and putting it all back together again. We acted as our own 'general contractors' in the sense that we hired and coordinated with niche contractors for things like the countertop, hand made tile installation, etc., but Cougar acted as our main contractor, and coordinated with all of the above. He is a nice guy, easy to work and communicate with, and very honest as far as his own areas of expertise or limits. He responded quickly and was flexible as things shifted on our project, including at times fixes mistakes/messes left by other contractors. Through this experience I learned that our project (a 'facelift' where we did NOT go to the studs but kept floors, cabinets, and some appliances) is actually in many ways much harder than a complete re-model, since he had to make all sorts of things work within/around the stuff we were leaving in place.
