For years I stayed somewhere new every time I visited Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, but what I really wanted was one place I'd want to return to again and again, somewhere that felt like a second home. A year ago I found it at Grünberg Haus, and I've been coming back again this summer--and it was the best tripe yet by far! Duane is the kind of host you don't forget. He seems to know what you need before you do, and you can feel how much he genuinely cares about everyone who walks through the door. I was traveling solo to meet up with friends and got there before anyone else arrived. Duane met me right in the parking lot, helped me get settled. Little touches like that set the tone for the whole stay. I stayed in the Inn and it was perfect. The bed was incredibly comfortable, everything was spotless, and the decor is full of personality and details you will never get tired of discovering. Mostly, though, it was just relaxing. I spent a lot of time just hanging out doing nothing but listening to the woods around me. As a lifelong New Yorker, it was the exact opposite of my daily life, and exactly what I needed. Breakfast is where Duane really shines. He is the heart and soul of Grünberg Haus and a true culinary genius. Every morning he cooked something different and every single one was a winner: egg, ham, and cheese; pancakes and eggs; breakfast tacos. And that yogurt and berry parfait... I'm still dreaming about it. The inn itself is gorgeous, decked out with great pop culture posters and all kinds of fun finds. My friends and I spent evenings hanging out in the cozy living room with a few drinks, and it was a blast. Duane also recently put in a new wifi system that boosted the internet across the entire property, so staying connected was never an issue, even out in the cabin. In the gathering room of the Inn, he's got an incredible selection of records! And if you want to watch anything, the projector is great. The location can't be beat. You're about five minutes from downtown Waterbury, home to one of my favorite bars anywhere, Blackback Pub, plus Freak Folk Brewing, Prohibition Pig, and Hen of the Wood, where I had an unforgettable dinner. We are an "older" couple touching 70 cycles around the sun and while some might find Grunberg too alternative for their taste we loved it. Duane is a super host and Neko his dog was a constant quiet companion. Duane serves up breakfast with flair even while doing simple fare. The location is awesome for the northern area around Stowe Burlington etc. . Drop off the stuffy tired chain hotel expectations and let yourself unwind here. This is a very interesting place to stay. Make sure you read all the reviews because I can see where this might not be the place for everyone. It is more of an alternative style place that attracts alternative style people. Now, if this is your type of place, you will love it! Everyone is super nice and fun to talk to, both owner and guests alike. Breakfast is with everyone or you can take it back and eat in your room if you want more privacy. We stayed in the Macey Mae cabin and loved our stay so much. Leah is an amazing host, very attentive, welcoming and always available if you needed something. All of the spaces (cabin and shared spaces) are eclectic, comfortable and so fun to explore. But most importantly meticulously clean! Breakfast spread was tasty. Also? The white twinkle lights at night were awesome, we sat on the balcony each night waiting for each section to illuminate. Would definitely return. read more

Hate doilies and pastel colors? So do I. Well, this week we had the pleasure of staying at The Grunberg Haus. Truly the dog loving, rock and rolling, mother-f***ing greatest B&B on the planet...and it just happens to be in Waterbury, Vermont! Did I mention there was a turntable in our room and a collection of vinyl that included THREE albums by the Replacements. Duane and Leah are the coolest hosts. Though they might be upstaged by Neko, a mammoth of a dog that might just be the sweetest creature we/ve ever met. I LOVE this dog. (She's named after Neko Case.) And I LOVE this place. I love this place. My wife and I have stayed here once for an overnight in the fall and we've come here with our 9 year old for a few days in the middle of the snowy winter. Each time we reserved one of the suites on the third floor as I'm a bit of a "privacy person". Grunberg Haus is a great place whether you value privacy, as I do, or are a social person, as my wife is. The rooms are private enough and have enough space that you can stretch out and relax - but if you want to socialize there's plenty of areas downstairs where people hang out, read and play. The owners really out do themselves with breakfast. Honestly, we weren't really hungry for lunch on the days we stayed there because the breakfasts were so good. I highly recommend the suites on the third floor - they're huge and very reasonably priced. The privacy that they give you exactly what I'm looking for. read more

WOW, is all I can say. I miss daily my conversations with Duane. He hangs out with you in a great way. Not to say Leah isn't awesome as well. I have never felt more comfortable staying anywhere in my life and I am not young. The breakfast and inn are well kept and clean, very unique. I want to give a bad review for the simple fact that i would want to have the Haus all to myself but that would be selfish. The interior is an ever changing atmosphere. There are personal touches everywhere you look. It would take you a week just to see all the decorations that the owners have placed throughout the property. Duane and Leah are sharing input and taking suggestions each day in a non intrusive way. In addition to us, our two dogs were equally comfortable with them. Their thoughtfulness and caring continued after we left for I received a little package from them a week later. I felt like i was staying with family that i really like... When my GF and I parked in front of this little B&B, I was charmed by the old fashion Swiss chalet aspect of the place. But sadly, the magic quickly disappeared when we entered our room. Bed and pillows were stiff and uncomfortable. We had to share the bathroom with another couple. Strangely, our room door didn't have a key-lock (like youth hostel) so it was not possible to lock our room when we left to go downtown. Wi-Fi was not working well. The walls and floors were so thin, that I was awake in the middle of the night when my room neighbor went to the bathroom. We even heard the lovemaking of a twenty-something couple during the evening when we were sitting in front of the fireplace downstairs. I don't mind staying in rustic hotel or B&B, but the price has to be in accordance with the service offered. Sadly, a night at the Grunberg Haus was about the same price of any other hotels around Waterbury. I gave 1 star for the old fashioned Swiss chalet ambiance and 1 star for the owner welcome and service. This B&B really need a major freshen up. It has the potential to be much better. If you like rustic and old fashioned B&B, the Grunberg Haus could be your place, if not, I don't recommend. read more

Our second trip to this location. It was just under a month from the last trip and the new owners really take Amazon pride at the property! Leah has been renovating the rooms to these adorable themed rooms! Hard to believe they have only been doing this for a little under 6 weeks but the space is amazing!! Highly suggested for young working professionals for a place to disconnect from the world. No TVs in the rooms (loved this part!), awesome new pool table in the lounge and as always love the BYOB bar that is an awesome spot to meet all sorts of cool traveling people! We stayed at Grunberg Haus for a week in October for my sister's wedding. Duane and Leah (the owners) were very welcoming and we felt like we were family the minute we walked through the door! They went above and beyond in preparation for the wedding which definitely took a load of stress off. We stayed in one of the cabins on the hill and it was the perfect little cozy cabin for my boyfriend and our 2 dogs to stay in. To get to the cabin, you had a short walk up the hill with lights along the way for when it's dark out. We drove our Subaru up there the first and last night to unload/load our belongings, but the drive is a little rocky and bumpy so I wouldn't suggest driving a car with low ground clearance up there.The cabin had a full bathroom, microwave, fireplace with cut wood, and a small fridge for us to keep all of our delicious craft Vermont beers in :) Leah made a delicious breakfast everyday, from pancakes with fresh maple syrup, to some AWESOME breakfast sandwiches! She also had some yummy parfaits and a variety of other options continental-style. The Inn itself has a multitude of different style rooms, all named after local area resorts like Sugarbush/Killington, etc. The main common area has a nice pool table, large comfy couch in front of a fireplace, long beautiful wood tables for breakfast/socializing, and a TV room. There is also a small bar area with tables and a common fridge in the next room over. There is a deck out the back with tables a chairs which is nice to sit out on a beautiful day. Close to Waterbury, Ben&Jerry's, Stowe Ski Mountain (which they have discounted lift tickets at the Inn), and plenty of restaurants and bars that are only a few minutes away. Our whole family absolutely loved the place. It felt like we were right at home, and everything was very easy going. Duane and Leah are the coolest people ever and are definitely in the right business. We can't wait for our next stay here! PS-DOGS ARE WELCOME!! :))) There is a cool dog park called "Dog Mountain" about an hour drive away from the Inn, but definitely worth checking out for those dog lovers out there. It is a whole off-leash mountain dog park with hiking, swimming, agility course, and even a little doggy chapel! read more

My entire family (12 of us) just came back from a long weekend in Vermont and we stayed at the Grunberg Haus. It was in the negatives outside and the Inn was just the perfect place to be. From roasting marshmallows in the fireplace, to playing billiards, and just sitting around the table having a delicious breakfast served by owners, Leah and Duane, the time we spent at this Inn was the best time we had all weekend. It is rustic yet cozy and the owners are super nice people. We all had our own rooms and bathrooms -- just be sure to check their website for the layout of the Inn before selecting your rooms so you know which rooms have private baths. We walked in after 5pm on St Patrick's Day to be greeted by Dwayne, one of the new owners, wearing a Metallica zip up hoodie and drinking a Guinness. This was not on the website, and the most welcome surprise we could have imagined. The website led us to believe it was going to be a standard, reasonably priced B&B, run by people who reminded us of our parents. Instead we got a billiards room decorated with snow and skateboards bedecked with hair and punk band logos, and reassurances from Dwayne that if we wanted to indulge in town for St Patty's day and take a cab back to the B&B that he would run us back to our car in the morning. Aside from the billiards room, there is also a game room with bench seating and board games with courtesy fridge for guest use and snacks. There was also a separate TV room with cable, firestick, Apple TV, but I can't speak to the viewing pleasure, since we were too busy enjoying the fireplace and view. However, the ability to close off the TV from the general area so as not to be a distraction was not lost on us, and greatly appreciated. In the mornings, Leah, the other half of the ownership duo, ensured that breakfast was something to write home about. The first morning we were treated to raspberry ricotta stuffed French toast (with Vermont maple syrup of course), while the second morning was a quiche with Gouda, ham and a wide selection of hot sauces. Both mornings we were treated to Cabot's Greek yogurt parfaits, and this may have contributed to us having to do the Cabot factory tour. Dwayne & Leah took over the place in July of 2016, so props to them for the renovations they have done thus far. We can't wait to go back and see what else they do and what the other Vermont seasons have to offer. read more

Such an amazing place! Perfect VT getaway spot!! We just left this wonderful inn and are already plotting when we can to go back! There is something magical about this place. It's fantastically Vermont with creative and comfortable surprises as every turn! An amazing balance of vintage fun with modern amenities inspires fun conversation within a relaxed atmosphere! And the creative and knowledgeable inn keepers are so wonderful when offering local advice, recommendations, or sharing their amazing inn-dog for a snuggle! We found ourselves excited to return after each of our days of adventure! Several common spaces have fireplaces, movie screens, books, games, record players with amazing vinyl collections. The big beautiful windows in the breakfast room literally bring the beauty indoors! Our room was spotless, comfortable, creative and fun! And there is no shortage of hot water in the renovated bathrooms:)) Local Artisan Coffee was delicious and the breakfasts with local sausage, yogurt, fruit, baked goods were only made better with Leah's creative presentations. I've had the opportunity to visit and stay at Grunberg Haus twice in the past 2 years and both times have been a great experience. Duane and Leah are so wonderful and clearly put a lot of thought into what they do. It's obvious how much they care about their guests and this property. Free night caps (and no, not the kind to put on top of your head ha ha) on the coffee table in the living room? Yes, please! Grunberg Haus was one of the best choices we made in our trip up to Vermont (especially since the night before we stayed here we stayed in this SUPER awkward house...which since it is owned by this really old lady, I will not say the name of or write up, but beware when in Stowe!). This rustic style bed and breakfast has board games and things that have been collected over the years in a pub like room downstairs, and the entire place is very German style, with the way the wood is cut, the furniture, the colors...They also make a mean breakfast in the morning! Owned by this awesome couple they made this tasty egg casserole dish complete with pastries and coffee, I was in heaven! You can rent a room in the house, but you may have to share your bathroom so look into that (we shared ours and it was fine, you just have to remember to lock two doors on both sides unless you want to surprise someone when they walk in on you!! ha ha) or they also have separate cabins you can rent as well. It is pretty much in the middle of a bunch of trees and right on the side of a mountain, so you definitely need a car of some sort to get here and to go anywhere from here. But if a nice getaway to nature is what you want, this place is great and not too pricey either! Plus the owners have a whole book full of nearby restaurants and menus, and they even typed up their own driving tour for you to do! read more

Hands down, best travel experience I've had while leaving the passport at home. Grunberg Haus delivers in all aspects. Amazing farm to table food that is both creative and delicious was served each morning. Duane and Leah are amazing hosts. Leah cranks out amazing eats while Duane not only entertains and serves dank grinds but also spins vinyl for you with a collection that ranges from The Misfits to Dolly Parton. Local knowledge a'plenty with these two who can fill you in on anything from the best craft in the region to how to access the good back country steeps. Super clean rooms with vinyl collections, an AMAZING billiard room that doubles as a museum for classic skate/snowboard/BMX/art/music memorabilia. As a 30+ year surfer/skater/big mountain skier I have an inherent nature to NEVER give up the info on a secret spot so I almost hate to do this review......but Leah and Duane are just too f'n cool. It's apparently not possible for me to delete this review, but I'm writing an update to highlight that my original review was written when the Haus was under previous ownership. I've updated my stars from 0 to 3 so that the previous ownership's mistakes don't hurt the new owner's reputation. Old ownership review: I'm surprised by all these positive reviews; I wonder if any of them were written by employees or owners. My mom stayed at the Grunberg recently and the service was highly disappointing. She is 70 years old and booked one of the cabins. When she asked for help wheeling her bag up the hill to the cabin, the proprietor refused and told her she'd have to do it herself. At breakfast, when she requested strong coffee, the other proprietor told her she'd have to "have it the way I make it." Bear in mind that she was paying $200 a night for a tiny room that my wife described as a girl-scout cabin! Not recommended. read more

If you like rural, semi-rustic, comfortable, quiet and out of the way, this is a great place to stay. With a significant other, family, or even with pets (although with pets, I believe you will have to stay in one of their cabins rather than in the main house) -- it is even a nice quiet place to stay by yourself if you happen to be travel ling alone. The Grunberg Haus is a replica of an Austrian ski chalet tucked into the woods right off of Route 100, just on the outskirts of Waterbury, Vt. -- it is VERY quaint. The hosts of the B&B are very friendly and live right there on the property. They offer up lodging in the main house -- with options ranging from a shared bathroom, to a private bathroom to an entire suite with two bedrooms. As I alluded to earlier, they also offer cabins -- up the hill from the main house. I have never seen the inside, but they look to have a lot of room and can accommodate pets there. They even have their own chicken coup on the grounds where I believe they get their fresh eggs from -- the kids love checking out the chickens in their coup. Aside from the accommodations themselves, they have a small bar area in the main house which includes an offering of hot chocolate and hot water for coffee or tea. They also have a fridge to keep an self-brought beverages cold while you stay there and a handful of board games to entertain yourselves with. In the living room are comfy couches and chairs to curl up in with a blanket and a book, while soft music plays and on chilly days they have their fireplace roaring. The morning brings a homemade hot breakfast with all of the accoutrement's. We have had mixed feelings about the breakfast on different stays there, but the view through their panoramic window while enjoying breakfast could not be beat -- really nice during the fall months. read more

I was really excited to stay at this B&B with my daughter, based on the description the B&B gives itself. My review is mixed. I wanted to give it 5 stars, but, as much as I wanted to, lack of sleep and lack of a hot breakfast, overshadowed hospitable and comfy clean, for my rating. Upon arrival we were greeted by one of the owners, Linda, who is very personable and made us feel at home. She assisted me with quickly locating a place for dinner. No delivery of any kind so I ordered dinner to go, and drove to pick it up in the pouring rain. We got back to B&B before dark, which was a good thing because I had almost driven past it in the daylight! As I unloaded the car, Linda offered to help. I declined her offer so she set about getting my daughter situated in the "pub" area for our pizza dinner. So far, 5 Stars. The main area and our bedroom was comfortably furnished and everything was very clean. Our King size bed, mattress and bedding, was equal to that found in a 5 star hotel. I was psyched about that and looking forward to a great nights sleep! Our private bathroom was sparkling clean. Add a star! Linda had stated we were to be the only guests that evening, but even so, the fact that the main entry door would be left unlocked all night and that the only lock on our bedroom was a small latch lock, made me a little uneasy. (that's what happens when you come from an area where you make sure to lock your doors at all times!)(you don't have a key for your room so when you leave it, it remains unlocked) Knock off 1/2 a star. My daughter & I had already had a long day, having been up since 4am, so we were tired but determined to stay awake even though by 6pm, we were wanting to fall asleep! We kept ourselves going by drawing in the "pub" area, playing Mancala, and throwing darts. We had to laugh, as the darts and board were magnetic, no points to get speared by! We had a lot of fun together. No computer or cell phone interruptions! Add a star! Around 9:30 we decided to go to our room, listen to music, read, and maybe fall asleep. Sleep came quickly but we both were awakened frequently throughout the night due to the excessive tapping noise coming from the heating pipes that run the ceiling of the room. That, along with being extremely hot in the room, caused us to still be exhausted, having called it quits with trying to get a decent sleep, by 6 the next morning. The windows cannot be opened, so no fresh mountain air. Had to kick off the comforter and quilt and only used the sheet. Knock off 3 stars due to lack of sleep and extreme heat. I was not feeling very social when we sat down for breakfast at 8:30am. A note in our room stated they had chickens, so I was looking forward to some eggs and other meal surprises I am accustomed to being served at B&B's. Linda brought each of us a small composed cup of mixed fruit: 3 strawberries sliced, 3 slices of banana, about 5 blueberries, kiwi slices on the bottom and a smattering of whipped cream on the top. As that was served, Linda pointed out a basket on the table that held some slices of specialty breads which I think she said were banana and pumpkin. Then we each received a slice of Ricotta french toast. No egg dish, no meat or potato or other B&B specialty food item. Bread and more bread in the form of french toast! There was about one serving of coffee left in the pot she offered, so I declined, opting for OJ, that was about 4ozs, with no more offered. Very disappointed. For me that takes away 1 1/2 stars. I won't say "never", to staying there again, in a different room, and without that expectation of a good breakfast. But I will opt to try other B&B's in the area, as well as the Marriott, first. read more

I have never stayed at an Inn/B&B before but after this trip any I do stay in will have a lot to live up to. My husband and I came here for our one year anniversary and it was AMAZING. Duane and Leah are great hosts and make sure you're comfortable throughout the entire stay. We only left the property a few time and spent the rest of our 4 day trip relaxing around the Haus. My husband and I stayed at the Grunberg Haus for an extended snowboarding weekend. GH is about 30 minutes from both Stowe and Sugarbush resorts. You'll find excellent breakfast, wonderful hosts, charming decor, comfortable beds, and more while staying here. The hosts are extremely welcoming, easy going, and accommodated my vegan breakfast needs. I was even able to keep my soy creamer and some food in the fridge! The town of Waterbury is cute and quaint and this B & B offers a quick drive from the hustle and bustle of the ski towns. We will be coming back here lots more this winter season! read more

Duane and Leah went above and beyond to ensure our group had a fantastic experience, at times hosting late through the night. These are the type of folks that would literally give the shirts off their backs. Well priced rooms and excellent breakfast, couldn't ask for more, yet they delivered much more. Access to their canoe and mountain bikes to see the beauty of Vermont. Bed: I elected to stay in one of the cabins with my girlfriend for the weekend because although we like the idea of the bed and breakfast, we liked the privacy of the cabin more. A short 2-3 minute uphill hike to the cabins would've been easier with lighter bags but we managed. Linda walked us up and showed us the ropes. The cabin has a shower, sink, toilet, wood stove, microwave, dresser, two nightstands, two rocking chairs, a coat-rack, and a mini-fridge oh and of course a well prepped and comfy queen bed. The cabin was not well ventilated and the 85-90 deg heat and high humidity did not help. The two fans were useful but not a quick fix. The windows did not have screens in our cabin but there were small adjustable screens that were provided that we had to put in ourselves. They did not keep the bugs out. The cabin was littered with moths and bugs throughout the weekend as the screens were not form fitting. There were also spiders and spider webs on the ceiling fan. Overall, I enjoyed the privacy but it felt more like camping in the woods than being in a quaint cabin. Breakfast: Nothing to write home about. Very routine. You arrive in the dining area and are offered coffee, tea, or juice. Then the fruit bowl/appetizer if you will, comes out. Afterwards, the main dish. We had french toast stuffed with ricotta, a cheddar cheese and potato quiche, and lastly an apple sauce pancake dish. Servings are reasonable but not in any way large. There were also bread bowls on the table with assorted breads. Ok breakfast but I would've rather go out to a different place for food. Better off with a hotel or maybe a different bed and breakfast. read more

The new owners, Leah and Dwayne were welcoming and gracious, going far beyond with helping us and guiding us in Waterbury and Stowe! Oh, and the breakfast was deliciously divine! GRUNBERG HAUS!! This is the stuff dreams are made of. Literally. As you pull up to the front of the inn, you instantly feel worlds away from the chaos of the real world. My 13 year old son took one look at the place and said, "When I was little, this is what I imagined Santa's house to look like! I can't believe this place is real!" When you walk through the front door, you start to realize just how amazing this cozy inn truly is. The smell of maple instantly welcomes you into the inn, and we were greeted immediately by Neko, the sweetest inn dog you will ever meet. Neko "showed us" to our suite and hung out with us for a bit as we got settled. As dog lovers, she was a very welcome addition to our awesome stay. The inn is everything you want it to be. It is a perfect mix of all of the best stuff - warm & cozy, rustic & vintage, cool & funky, and a little bit of punk rock and rock & roll. We loved the record player in our room and had a great time listening to the mix of albums that were there. The bed - it was so soft and comfy. I had 2 of the best nights of sleep ever! The innkeepers, Duane & Leah, are 2 of the nicest people you will ever meet. Leah will spoil you with her amazing breakfasts and Duane is super helpful with advice on all the cool local things to do. From waterfalls & swimming holes, to restaurants in town in Waterbury - he helped us immensely. He really loves helping you get the most out of your time in the area. We had the best time hanging out at the fire pit on our second night, and he was great at making sure to include my younger son in our conversations. We absolutely loved our stay there and cannot wait to go back. The only disappointing part was that we only stayed for 2 nights. Next time, we will definitely stay longer! Make sure to visit their mercantile to grab yourself a few of their AMAZING maple candles before you leave! They have so many awesome goodies including Grunberg Haus merch, vintage ski jackets, and some of the best local products. Do yourself a favor, and book a stay here the next time you are in the area. We stayed here the last weekend in April during our first visit to VT. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Duane and Leah. Duane gave us a tour of the property and made us feel at home. Besides us, there was only one other couple in the entire Haus. Each morning, coffee, yogurt parfait and a different hot breakfast was served by Leah and each was delicious. The best part about the visit is that, being unfamiliar with the area, we relied on Duane's knowledge when we had questions. He gave us great ideas on things to see and do and we were never disappointed with his suggestions. Duane, thanks for the map and the highlights of the falls. We drove back roads all the way to Manchester, which took 6 hours. read more

Absolutely wonderful place to stay. My friend and I shared a room for the weekend of VT Comicon. The hosts were incredibly kind and accommodating. The place is beautiful and the wildlife outside our room in the morning was delightful. It was a small trek to Barre for the Con but it was well worth it. read more

Wonderful bed and breakfast in a Bavarian Style with eclectic style inside. First of all you are greeted by the wonderful inn-keeper dogs, they have two but Neko, (their gorgeous malamute) is the Mascot :D Which is always one of the best greetings especially if you are a dog owner and your own couldn't come. Then the eclectic style inside has everything from Old Americana, Old Stowe, Rock Music styling and more! Truly something for everyone! Duane and Leah are super-friendly and hardworking to make sure their guests have a wonderful and memorable stay! You can tell why their guests want to come back and do, and why some make it a regular retreat! The rooms were super cozy, comfortable, and warm! They have a projector in the common room, a pool table, records and record players (most rooms have the players as well), and more. Then in the mornings you have an amazing breakfast which ours had fruit juices and coffee, smoothies, and breakfast sandwiches with breakfast potatoes, which all were super delicious! Wish we could have stayed longer, will definitely stay again if we have the opportunity. Highly recommend to anyone! read more

Stayed here with a few friends on a weekend trip to Vermont in October 2011, right after the hurricanes came through. It was great! They provided free hot cocoa and free nightcaps (my friend combined the two, but I'm a lame teetotaler and so just had my cocoa), a collection of board games (although the scrabble was missing a couple of letters), and a delicious breakfast. The place itself is quiet, secluded, and has a good balcony around the outside for some light exploring. The owners were just the nicest people. I don't know that I'll ever go back, since my husband and I are more of the dormitory hostel type, but I'm really glad that our first accommodation -- a chain hotel -- fell through. read more

What a special place Grunberg Haus is. My husband, 14 year old daughter and I stayed in the Jay Peak/Bolton Valley suite for two nights at the close of a five night trip to VT. By the time we left we were wishing we had spent the entire five nights at this welcoming space and our daughter was already plotting a return before we even left the property. We were slightly skeptical before arrival because we are not usually the B&B type, preferring privacy and quiet. We were all won over by Leah and Duane's charm, the long list of amenities, and especially Neko. Oh...and there was still plenty of space and privacy. From the eclectic, personalized and cozy decor to the hearty and delicious food they serve, we loved everything about our stay. I worry I could write a novel listing everything that makes this place amazing...the vinyl collection, the pool table, the snacks to satisfy late night cravings, the mix of wilderness cabin and modern tech (think Apple TV) and even the house "rules" that are generous but reasonable and playful, helping all guests coexist harmoniously, while in NO way being stuffy. Their attention to detail and interest in ensuring guests feel comfortable and at home was simply spot on. Both Leah and Duane are the right mix of charming, friendly, talkative yet totally unobtrusive. They were made for this work and have created a true gem. Above all I think the tremendous generosity of trusting spirit with which they operate this home away from home was what made Grunberg Haus the most magical. Words truly can't do it justice. We were very uncomfortable here. Luckily we had only planned on one night. The first thing I noticed on walking in the door was that the whole place smelled dirty. Everything is very old and needs to be freshened up. The bedside table in our room was not dusted. The other side of the bed did not have a bedside table, so I had to pull up a chair for my alarm clock and book. There was hair on the bathroom floor when we arrived.The bath towels had light stains and were old and thin. The mattress was very old and lumpy. On the positive side, the owners were nice and it was in a beautiful setting. It was very dark and quiet so I slept surprisingly well. read more
