This easy hike is a 5 minute drive from Pala Casino off of Hwy 76. We spent about an hour and a half on the trails, which included stopping a few times for photos and views. Other than one slight elevation, it was all flat, wide trails. NOTE: $5 FEE. Highlights: A pond, elevated views of the surrounding area, shrubs, trees, cacti, a few flowers, museum (which wasn't open when we went). PROS: ~Plenty of parking on site (go through the gates) ~Porta potties on site. A couple in the parking lot and a couple on the trails. The one I used was clean and didn't smell. Antibacterial gel and toilet paper provided. No sink. ~Picnic benches available, although most were not in the shade. Trash and recycling containers provided. ~Most trails were wide and flat. There was one part where we walked up an elevation which provided views of the surrounding area. ~A few benches were available on the trail. ~Well sign-posted from the road. ~There was a caretaker on site, keeping everything well maintained. ~It wasn't busy when we went in May 2026. We saw about 5 other people. CONS: ~$5 entry fee (May 2026) ~The museum wasn't open when we were there. We walked by twice. I felt for our $5 we should have had entry to the museum. ~Somewhat underwhelming, but easy and well maintained. So last week was my second time to this spot. I enjoyed it the first time that I asked my friend to join me again for another leisurely hike/walk. There is a small fee of $3 to park and enjoy a walk or hike. Each time of our visit it seemed like they were maintaining certain areas. This spot is located right off the main road of Pala, which you must give a enough time to give the driver behind you with a warning brake and use your signal. This turn will sneak up on you as you are coming downhill at a decent speed. I like this area because it is not too far from where I live and it has a lot of nature habitat that I feel like I am deep in a canyon. You can make this a leisure walk or a moderate hike by taking a different trail. There is a small pond nearby and a couple of benches to sit and enjoy the pond. While on this walk we watched a healthy coyote roam the area. We didn't feel threatened by it. We opted to head up the hill which we managed much better than my first time. There are areas that have soft soil/sand. We didn't come across any snakes, but I see a Yelper had encountered one. We are in their territory. During our walk at mid morning there was a constant breeze, that was a plus. There is a porta potty available if needed. During our first visit rangers were driving the roads periodically, which this time we didn't seen anyone driving in the area. I hope to do another leisure walk or hike here again soon. The entrance to this place WILL sneak up on ya, and it's a steep entrance so drive slow! This is one of my absolute favorite places to go to with all my dogs. This place is very peaceful on weekdays, it has plenty of easy trails to use and a few that are a little more difficult but not ridiculously steep and there's stairs on one trail! When the rains are heavy you have to cross the river at the start, IF the current isn't crazy strong. If so, it'll likely be closed and you can only walk on one trail near the parking lot. Parking is $3, but there's a year pass option which if you're local enough it pays for itself! They're also closed on Wednesdays and their hours are 8am-4pm. read more

I like that the different trails are marked with a sign, however the main trail wasn't clearly marked. An employee was near us so o asked her and she pointed us in the right direction. She was very nice and helpful. The trail starts off pretty easy, once we decided to take the scenic route (again it was marked) it got a little difficult, up hill and rocky a bit. There were also steep stairs to get back down. Lots of fire ants, so please watch out for those. We saw bunnies and lizards, not very many birds. It was a nice little hike, we were staying at the RV resort nearby. read more

Rattlesnake shake.. Wilderness Gardens would still would have been a fun hiking experience even without seeing the big Southern Pacific Rattlesnake. Other than the long drive to get to this Preserve we had a great time walking through all of easy trails they have here. It's a family friendly experience with one minor hill and some small rocks and boulders in you way. The trails are maintained and are pretty wide so you don't have to worry about snakes ( like my Rattlesnake friend just sitting next the path). A good plan would be to go up the Upper Meadow Trail first. It's my favorite trail here because it's full of green overgrowth and vines. Once at the top you have a great view of the area. There are only three miles of hiking trails here so you can do it all in a few hours. One thing, on some portions of the trail you will hear bees...It can be a little unnerving with the loud buzzing of swarming bees around but I think the hives are not too close to the actual trails. - Can get HOT here, bring lots of water and hats. - Family friendly hike. - $3 to park but the trails are clean and they have chem-cans.. - It was basically empty on a Saturday afternoon. read more

Quaint little open space / park off of Highway 76 near Pala. The trails are well maintained... more of a leisurely walk than serious hiking. At the trail head, you cross the San Luis Rey River... since we went in June, the river wasn't flowing which makes the crossing easy. The Upper Meadow Trail is worth checking out. It offers a sweeping view of the area including a small pond within the park. The pond itself is overgrown with cat tails so its difficult to see from the main trail down on the valley floor. Overall a nice little park... worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

Drive down the hill, where there is a small parking lot. Park and fill out a pink envelope located on the large green sign. De-attach the top portion to leave on car's dashboard. Then place $3 into the envelope and insert in the drop off box(remember to fill it out). The trails are quite short (less than a mile or so). There is hardly any shade. After the hike, a picnic would be perfect!!! read more

What a pretty park! They are open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday through Monday. Closed on Tuesdays , Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Closed August 1 to September 4 due to high temperatures. There is a $3 parking fee. I saw the sign when I drove in.. but there was no ranger station in site and no soul to be seen.. so I could not figure out how to pay the $3. So I parked anyway and came back to a ticket. Who put that there, a ghost? What the hell?? I had to mail in a $3 check. One star off for that. If you are coming from the west on the 76, don't look to your right it's a looong way down! There are 4 miles of trails. I'd say these trails are appropriate for beginners in hiking or anyone who wants a peaceful stroll. There was no on else around during a weekday. Nice wide flat trails. The Upper Meadows Trail was more narrow and shaded.. we needed our hiking sticks to clear the spider webs out of the way. Totally worth it though for the views. The pond appears overgrown from ground level but more water can be seen from the Upper Meadow Trail. Definitely work checking out!! read more

Really beautiful preserve! The Upper Meadow Trail is my favorite. In mid-May there are flowers of every color of the rainbow blooming. Also, the sage plants give off a lovely scent. Lastly, the pond has many orange dragon flies flying around it and big bullfrogs in it ! Pretty enchanting! read more

We got to walk with the park ranger today. It was an amazing experience having someone tell you the history of the land. He told us about different plants that native americans used or ate. It was interesting how many things they could eat. It is a pretty flat walk but round up to 4.5 or so miles. There is a bit of included at one point but it's not too bad. I took my 3 kids and will come again! read more

Wonderful park with some good trails. Great for novice hikers or anyone who enjoys flat trails with some good sights. The are only a few miles of maintained trails but the might be more that I didn't have time to check out. Great to take the family to even for those who don't go hiking. There are picnic tables around the park and a few along the trails. Good for a family lunch. Park closes at 4PM. There is a $3 parking fee. read more

Wonderful, serene preserve that is dog friendly. Yes, dog friendly. Please ignore the review that says "no pets." We left our dog behind because of that erroneous review. There are doggie bag stations throughout the park so you can clean up after your pet. Also, quite a few porta potties (which are clean) and provide hand sanitizer. We thoroughly enjoyed our hike and found a shady spot to picnic. As others have mentioned, you need to bring $3 in cash and a pen so you can fill out your vehicle information on the deposit envelope. We walked along the main trail then connected with the Upper Meadow Trail this trail has great views but a moderate to difficult walk. Next, we walked down to the Pond Loop Trail. First time here today. Really enjoyed our walk even in the rain. Everything was very clean and well kept. Benches, picnic tables and bathrooms scattered around for convenience. Lots to look at between buildings, old trees, the pond, the scenery and just nature in general. The ranger was out driving around so it was nice not to feel too isolated, just in case. Came here with my hubby and a friend. Scenery was okay. The most scenic trail had a nice view from the top once you climb the stairs. Some of it is a steep incline. Other trails were relatively flat. We were disappointed that the river was all dried up- thanks CA drought. You cannot see the pond at all during the "pond loop trail." Tips: Wear bug repellant on your legs/shoes as a sign says ticks are common in the area. I does get hot in the summer so hydrate and wear sunblock. You must pay $3 in parking fees per car and only cash is accepted- you deposit it into an envelope at the trail head once you park. Pick up a trail map at the trailhead and try them all- I think it took us an hour and a half or so and we even discovered a few short loops not on the map. It was a nice hike to try once but probably won't be back to do it again. Palomar Mountain has a variety of hikes not too far from here with prettier views. read more

We took our 5 year old and 3 year old here for a nature walk. I really like that there are bathroom facilities in the parking lot and along the trail. Even though it's chemical toilets it's still better than nothing. There are also picnic tables and we were able to enjoy a snack both before and after our walk. When we return I would make sure to come on a cloudy day or on a cooler day. It can get hot by 10 a.m. and ideally we would be finishing up our walk by then and not starting. The first part of the hike is along a packed dirt road that leads to the ranger station. Past the ranger station it becomes more like a walking trail. We only did a small portion of the walk because of the heat but it wouldn't have taken long to complete the trail. read more

Great place when your in this part of town and want to get a quick wilderness hike in. It's kid friendly and very easy.

It's a cute spot for an easy hike. We're lucky, there's been plenty of rain this season to make everything lush and green, so the scenery was very nice. Parking: Once you drive onto the road that leads in, stay right. Find the Ranger Station board and fill out your info and pay the $3 parking fee. There are designated spots on the left. :) read more

Awesome hidden gem to go for a nice hike/walk ! Shady and clean and off the beaten path. Views are pretty awesome and the grounds are well kept. Good place to take the family on a walk or a nice picnic. read more
