Ahh, Whispering Firs. A tale of two sides, if there ever was one. My wife and I stayed here…read morerecently and had some very good experiences and thoughts...but also had some very negative things as well. We had originally booked two nights, but because of the negatives we ended up staying just the first night and checked-out early. Here's the tale of the tape: The Good: - Linda and Vic (the innkeepers) are very nice. Extremely friendly and easy to talk to, Linda made us feel at home straightaway and was great company and conversation during breakfast. - Speaking of, the food was really good. We had blueberry cream cheese pancakes, bacon, and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Along side juice, fruit, and coffee/tea. Linda was also very accommodating toward dietary concerns too. - The property and view is gorgeous! Located up on a mountain area, Whispering Firs overlooks the valley and you can even see the Sound and Whidbey Island. - The house itself is warm, comfortable, and inviting. There's a beautiful deck on the backside that it multi-tiered and has a walking path around little ponds. This would be great for entertaining and lounging. The Bad: - To get there, you have to drive up a half-mile gravel road that is full of potholes and bumps. It's narrow and not something that a regular car can navigate quickly. Wish we had a 4x4 vehicle. - The bed in our room (the North Suite) was way too high. It sounds weird to say that, but at roughly 3 feet high, it was a struggle for my 8 month pregnant wife to literally climb in and out of. - There were no curtains on the windows...just blinds that didn't block out all of the light and sight lines. So, there was a big lack of privacy seeing as the windows looked out onto the deck. - This room is located right next to the breakfast room, so it is extremely loud in the mornings. Breakfast is normally served at 8:30, but our morning had a group that wanted to eat at 7:00. That meant at 6:30 things got rolling on the other side of the wall and we heard it all. Neither Good nor Bad, Just Depends on You Point of View: - There is a large collection of stuffed animals (the taxidermy type) throughout the house and bedrooms. A hunter's paradise...so may not be up your alley. All in all, this could be a lovely place to stay; but it just didn't suite us and fit our needs. For someone else, it might be perfect. I have to stress that the house is just gorgeous, and we have free access to all but private quarters. The setting is so peaceful, and it is lovely watching the horses. We had the Capt Don Suite, which was so nice. Two beds so we could get into a fight and sleep apart if we wanted to. (We didn't.) The suite is tricked out with all things pony. Very comfortable. We liked the place so much we have advanced reserved the Gallant Best suite for an upcoming stay, complete with ample living space, a crystal fireplace and hot tub all to our own on a little outside patio. Gregg is an amazing host and cook to boot! His breakfasts are generous and amazingly delicious--and on our three-day stay, nothing cooked for us was the same, so it was a joy to eat there. Plus Gregg is so fun to talk to. We enjoyed our breakfast time with him so much. I am not into B&Bs so much as I always feel like I am imposing on our hosts. Not so here. It was just comfortable, warm, welcoming and wonderful. There--a bunch of W-wonderfulness and wonders.

The bed has the softest sheets I've ever slept in in all my life! If you can stay in the room with the jet tub you'll feel you are in a five-star resort especially if you make a cup of coffee and sit outside on the balcony of that bedroom.Each room has a high tech digital locking system so you'll feel safe. Breakfast was beyond delicious with an egg dish made with eggs from their own chickens and Teresa is a whiz with her recipes and the food was beyond delicious! Sitting and having breakfast conversation with Michael and Teresa was absolutely charming, entertaining, and informative as we learned a lot about the history of this town and the surrounding area's. They have learned a lot about the town and it's history and they are happy to share their knowledge to make your stay more pleasant and are more than willing to share their local knowledge with their guests. I expect to plan another visit to this adorable and luxurious (feeling) bed and breakfast. I am a bit of a self-confessed hotel snob and I would recommend this place in a hot minute to anybody who wants quality and comfort at an affordable price!

Chat with the farmers who stop buy nearly daily to tend to things they will give you farm fresh eggs even take you on a hay ride. I got to drive the tractor...felt like a kid again! We'll be recounting memories of muffins, quiche, sticky buns and strawberry cake for quite some time into the future. You can burn off the calories from breakfast (which is worth every last one) by playing with the miniature farm animals and going for a long walk in the beautiful woods. If you arrive late, you can park and check in in the morning (now that we've been doing this for a while, that seems to be the norm). Friendly staff, gorgeous views, beach access, base police make regular rounds, and the bathroom facilities are clean and warm. It's nice to take a shower in an area big enough that if you drop something, you don't have to get out of the shower to pick it up. ;-) The dogs loved the path and the nearness of the beach for potty potty breaks. Man, this place is so windy. If I might make a recommendation...keep your awning in. Only put it out when you plan to sit under it...otherwise, keep it in. Prices are competitive. There is a playground and giant chess set. BBQ's provided at each site. Back in, pull through, 50 amp, 30 amp, tent camping, yurts, oh...and fun "art" installations along the path. If you're into tetanus PT, there's a pull-up area covered in rust!

The Whidbey Scenic Isle Way is a nice stop to take pictures of the shoreline just past Fort Casey State Park. People were fishing and even scuba diving while I was walking around. The whole coastline is refreshing and a great way to put things in perspective. I enjoyed being there.
