She was super kind and made me feel so much better when I was nervous about the surgery. The nurses and anesthesiologist also were so kind and calming and funny on the day of the surgery, can't thank them enough for their sweet words when I was feeling nervous. Dr. Reis walked in and talked me through the procedure and my nervousness was gone and I was confident about going under. He may think its simple, or over-exaggerated, but to the patient, it is a life decision. And because of that, I would expect that a doctor would take at least 10 or 15 minutes to go over notes and labs on his patients before a visit. I would not recommend Dr. Reis, and I have written this Dr. visit off as a learning experience. I had high hopes that going to a surgeon I would get answers and options since nothing I tried over the past year has worked. As it turned out, Dr. Reis did not fully explain my situation, dismissed the trauma causation, did not provide explanation or complete evaluation, and was condescending. It appears as though he did not review my records, and causally glanced at my MRI during my visit with him. After waiting an hour+ past my appointment, he breezed in sat down and said "why are you here"? and "what do you want me to do"? Not, how can I help you, or What can I do for you. It's possible he was purposefully being causal, but it fell flat. I just said I was referred to him by Dr. Lake for evaluation and review of my MRI, blah, blah, blah, and that I believe there were notes in MyChart documenting treatment so far, medications taken, etc., and I was looking for answers as to where I go from here. I am in pain every day and he made me feel like I was an imposition. I think I was so stunned by his lack of care and concern that I was mostly speechless, I didn't know what to say. I don't want temporary relief I want a solution, if there is none, then I will know I have to live in pain the rest of my life. After a couple of questions, long uncomfortable silence and a few strength tests he summed up the whole traumatic event that started this unwanted journey of pain over the past year in a one word diagnosis with the sentence that started with It's just blah, forget about all the other terminology in your MRI. Then he said, yeah your a candidate for surgery, nothing urgent, you can wait 6 months, you can read my notes in MyChart, he stood up, shook my hand and walked out! My husband and I looked at each other in stunned silence, and were like, well I guess that's it then. I think I was in there probably all of 10 to 12 minutes tops. I have to say, he left me speechless, not in a good way. I guess he was throwing the MyChart comment back in my face; but in my defense, if I am being sent to him for evaluation for surgery options, wouldn't he want to read the notes on my previous treatment and especially the MRIs and x-rays, then explain what was going on and ask what questions I had for him? He should have developed a plan before my visit so he could explain to me what was going on and what I could expect, and what he could do for me and his plan for me going forward. In his way, I guess he did, but I know people who did wait, and they waited too long, and ended up with permanent nerve damage. If he didn't want me as a patient he should have just canceled my appointment, told me he couldn't help me, and send me on my way. I hope Dr. Reis reads this and, if nothing else, realize that patients are more than a number or dollar signs, and just maybe, they need real documented information from a studied and trusted source in order to make an educated, life changing decision. But, I doubt he will take the time to read this, I don't feel as if took the time to read my medical records.

I was warned in advance that this would be the case. Once I was in the room to be seen a super nice tech took me back for x-rays. She responded yes. He then asked how far behind Dr Mudrick was running and said "I'm a doctor." The nurse asked his name, looked at her pages of patients and responded "you're at 3:40, I'll be calling you next." That got my attention and I responded "excuse me, my appointment was at 3:10 and I'm leaving" which I did. There are any number of highly recommended orthopedic surgeons in the Richmond area. Dr. Shaia is the very best knee doctor, period. He replaced one knee, but only after trying multiple options to make the original knee last as long as possible. I appreciate the mindset that surgery is NOT the first option, but rather one to be considered after other options no longer work. And he trusts the patient to determine when they no longer work. He lets the patient actually be the driver of the decision-making process, not taking an attitude of "I know better." My knee replacement was as much of a breeze as a surgery can be - little pain, easy healing, steady progress, back on my way in the expected time with practically no complications. I don't hear that story from people who go to other surgeons... I appreciate his manner - he's no-nonsense, and asks direct questions to get direct answers, so that he can suggest options for care and treatment. He doesn't coddle or use euphemisms, which I appreciate - I hate being treated like I'm stupid! - and he takes seriously the symptoms and information I provide.

When my daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12, we interviewed 1/2 dozen doctors before choosing Dr. Kim. What drew us to him was his professional demeanor yet personable bedside manner. He is impeccable is his appearance and is healthy and fit. (Some of the other doctors we interviewed were not, I mean, if you can't take care of yourself, how can you take care of others?) We were impressed by his knowledge, his gentleness and his patience. He answered my barrage of questions and put us at ease. When the time came for my daughter's surgery, he quelled our nerves and we felt completely confident in his expertise. Without going into too much detail, the surgery went great, my daughter's back is beautifully aligned and straight, and her stitches looked like they were made with a sewing machine, perfect. My daughter is now healed, almost 22 and has been discharged from Dr. Kim's care, but we still visit him regularly and thank him for his contribution to our daughter's health! She and Dr. Kim are BFFs! And he will always have a special place in our hearts! And yes, he always has her back!! I brag about Dr. Kim to everyone I know. I trust him implicitly. He quite literally saved our daughter's life and he will forever be our super hero. A million stars!

I have had both knees replaced and it has proved to be life changing. While my recent visit was minor, it was comforting to be able to make sure my foot injury was indeed just a "bump in the road".
