I have been coming to Beach Cities Dermatology for the past 3 years... Today was my first time being seen by Dr. Wickwire and his nurse Stephanie. Both were very attentive and friendly. Stephanie made me feel very welcome. She provided outstanding and caring service. The Dr. Wickwire was very informative about the procedure and explained what he was doing throughout and why. Just like Stephanie the Dr. also provided great service. The front office staff is also very friendly, I have never had a bad experience. Dr. Wickwire is an exceptional doctor. He calmly listens to your concerns and answers them. He is up front and honest with you. He will tell you exactly what is a problem and what isn't, without dismissing your questions. You can trust what he says. I've gone in with medical problems that needed treatment, and he instantly saw it was a problem. I received my prescription from him, used it, and it was very effective. I've also gone in with a concern and was told by him: "I've heard your concern. I've examined you. I recognize what that is. That's natural. It's not a medical issue that needs treatment. I can tell you why. The reason is because you're lacking problems that I would recognize if it were a medical issue, and you also can see they're not there. But, I can recommend something to help you if it's a problem to your personally." In the end, he was right, and I took away peace of mind that it was truly nothing to worry about. (Of course, this is a little easier with a skin doctor who knows the difference between something benign and something potentially serious.) The receptions are very nice. As are the nurses. What really is wonderful are the wait times. Perhaps I've simply been lucky, but the last visit, I barely sat down in the waiting room before being called back to the exam room, and then barely waited in that room for a minute before the doctor came in. It's a very short waiting time between arriving and being examined that is incredibly rare. To sum up my review, he's strongly recommended and fully deserves five stars. read more

I've been going to Dr. Wickwire for years. He's friendly and very professional. Dr. Wickwire thoroughly explains his diagnosis in easy to comprehend patient terms. The waiting room is spacious. This is an example of everything wrong with the medical system. Nice fancy office... but if you don't want to be treated like a chicken in a processing plant... avoid this place. They try and process as many patients as possible to maximize profitability... I was left in a freezing room in one of those plastic throw away gowns for over half an hour. I'm sure there were a score of other patients in their 'coups' as well. I was at this awful place for over an hour before I even got a glimpse of Wickwire... he was surprised when I told him he needed to learn how to respect a patient... Not a big fan of this guy or his office (Beach Cities Dermatology). I made an appointment at the Culver City location, but when I got the day-before confirmation call, it was suddenly at the Redondo location. I didn't want to reschedule for a later date, so I just made the drive south, no problem. I'm giving Dr. Wickwire three stars, because you know how you occasionally run into those people who you just don't really vibe with? I think he might have been one of them. I found him condescending, judgmental, and awkward. That office doesn't have a great feel to it either (lack of windows, cramped), so maybe he was just having a grumpy day there, who knows. He seems quite competent, but with the number of doctors in LA, I'll be giving my out-of-pocket cash to someone else. read more

I went to Dr. Wickwire for myself after seeing him for my son's cystic acne. He is a gem! He is such a pleasant man, and very professional and thorough. He took all the time I needed to completely answer every single question and concern in detail. He talked me through a small procedure I had to have because he knew I was nervous. He kept the mood light and calm. I can't even explain how much I appreciated that. He also treated my teenage son with such kindness and sympathy for the mental and physical anguish that accompanies cystic acne. No other derm we have been to for his acne had ever taken the time to truly connect with my son and give him hope for his condition. He is now on the path to true healing and I can tell he's already feeling better about himself. He is very thankful for Dr. Wickwire and so am I! This is how doctors are supposed to treat their patients. He really cares about your well-being. He is my family's dermatologist now! And on top of it... his office is sparkling clean and his staff is fantastic! They are friendly and really helpful. They manage the appointments so well that we did not even have to wait around to be called in. They make sure you get into your room promptly and special care is taken during this time to ensure that there are no other patients in the office during your appointment time. I have seen this doc several times over the past decade. My son had bad acne and we went to Dr. Wickwire. He is a very nice and professional doc. His service and advice worked for me. My sons acne was so bad nothing really worked, even Dr. Wickwires. I had a small lesion on my temple area. Doc removed it in the office and tested it, nothing major wrong. I was done. One thing that bothered me at this office, but really has no bad reflection of DR. Wickwire, was the fact that I had to pay my deductible at the office visit. BEFORE I got the notice from my insurer. I usually get the statement from Blue Cross, then a statement from the doc office and I pay through the mail. Not here. Not a biggie as it was only sixty bucks. read more

My experience was terrible. I believe that Wickwire misdiagnosed a painful lump on my finger and cut it when he shouldn't have. After the procedure, I tried to get him on the phone but he would not call me back. Only his office manager would call me back. I have never experienced that. Most doctors return the call. I had tremendous pain during the recovery period, but he would not return my calls. After I wrote him a three-page letter describing my pain, he finally called me back. And even during the call, he was counting the minutes - telling me that he's spending a lot of time on the phone with me and that he has to get back to his staff. By that point, I had been suffering for months and he has the audacity to tell me he's busy. I would never see this guy again. If he had talked through the treatment options with me longer, I would have seen someone else for a second opinion. Over one year after the treatment, the bump is back, the nerve pain is back and all I have is a scar to show for it. Thanks a lot! read more

My review is for Fariba and not Dr. Wickwire. If it was for him , it would be one star. He made me feel like a complete idiot when I asked for some information on one of his lasers and handed me a pamphlet and asked me what more I needed to know with a condescending look and tone. AND he injected a cyst on my face and now I have a huge pit for 2 years. Anyway, back to Fariba. She is amazing. Great personality and she has done all my laser hair removal. You don't have to be discreet with her since she used to work at an OB-gyn office. ;) She always pays attention to what you are saying and really wants to clear up your acne or hair or whatever else you have going on. read more

I totally agree with the comment of Ellen S. I should have written this review years ago, but I just let it go, but it's been bugging me ever since. I saw him maybe 6 years ago, about having a mole removed. He was very condescending when I asked questions, as he was wearing a "Patients First" button (very ironic I thought afterwards). When I asked him about different ways to have it removed, that I had heard of, he dismissively told me that there was no difference and the way he wanted was best. I foolishly went ahead with him to get the mole removed from my nose. After a few days I noticed that the mole was still there and there was a slight dent where the mole was. When I went back to the office to check with him about it, he looked at me and said that I must have been been picking at it. Which was complete nonsense, I did everything I was told to do. When I asked him the questions he dismissed before, he tried to change the subject. During this encounter his facial expressions were that of a person that screwed up and didn't want to admit it (I work with kids and know when I see it). He said doing anything else would make it worse and that was all he could do. Please stay away from this guy, I took this as a lesson that no matter how many initials someone has after their name, you never outsource your decision making. And I am really sorry for all those patients that have had terrible experiences with him after my visit. read more

I changed to Dr Wickwire through a recommendation from a friend. I was going to a dermatologist at Health Care Partners for many years, that I finally figured out, was not very good, as he was missing my AK's, with poor targeting, perhaps poor eyesight. He apparently also missed seeing my basil cell carcanomas, as Dr. Wickwire spotted them (nearly) immediately. Wickwire seems very capable to me, is efficient, careful and does very good work in my opinion. After two or three basils removed, I am nearly caught up to where I should have been a couple of years ago. One Basil was a large one (maybe 1 x 2 cm) on my temple, that Wickwire cut out and stitched up (margins clear now). I did get a staff infection in it , but with the help of R. N. Fariba (also very good), it cleared up in about 2 or 3 days. read more

I would not recommend Dr. Wickwire, but I do recommend Fariba (I think she is a Nurse Practitioner at his office). I first saw him a number of years ago for a condition on my face and scalp. I don't recall why I chose him, however, it was probably because his office was nearby my home. After he finished looking at my face and scalp, I wasn't surprised that he told me he wanted to examine me for moles (it was my first time at his office) but I was SHOCKED when he told me to take off my pants - IN FRONT OF HIM! Maybe I'm old fashioned...but I do not disrobe in front of anyone - except my husband! I had to go back for a follow up visit and THANKFULLY, Fariba was the one who saw me. Since then, I will only see her. In fact, when I went to see Fariba recently, I had decided that if, for some reason, Fariba wasn't able to see me and if Dr. W came into my room, I was going to leave. Fariba helped me with new Rx and I'm all good! In the larger scheme of things, I know this is not a huge issue, but because Dr. W is not the only dermatologist in the Los Angeles area, I choose not to see him. My hubby and I can laugh about that first visit I had with him (I didn't laugh about it for a long time it happened) when I say that I'm going to a doctor for a hang-nail...and that I better make sure to have shaved my legs because I might be asked to take off my pants! read more

I urge anyone to AVOID Dr. Wickwire. He didn't take Bedside Manner 101 and is very condescending, does not listen to you and your issues, and is quick to prescribe. He is from the old school (even though he doesn't look elderly-old) of medicine and thinks he is the bomb. I have been to many doctors and many dermatologists over the years, and I have come back to Dr. Wickwire even though I moved away...he is thorough and does a complete exam, but also quick without a bunch of formality...I went to another dermatologist who didn't look at my back AT ALL and sort of stood at the door and threw prescriptions at me......Dr. Wickwire tells me funny stories...He is a little irreverant, always wears a bow tie, and I like going there. He doesn't make me come for an office call when it isn't medically needed, but doesn't let anything slide either...just about as good as they get. Well trained, beautiful offices in Redondo Beach and Culver City...didn't like the PV office but I heard they are building a new one. my whole family goes to Dr. Wickwire over the past ten years, but never had anything to post. My daughter had a infection and had to go to urgent care on a Monday because his office is closed. On Wednesday the infection did not appear to be getting better and without an appointment, Dr. Wickwire's staff squeezed her in. He took a culture to make sure we were on the right path. I would Dr. Wickwire one star except for the fact that he at least used accutane at the correct dosage. The bad part is that he didn't tell me about the alternative and offer to do the alternative which is laser treatment. He downplayed the idea that any alternative was a good idea and simply had me in and out of his office as fast as possible with that prescription. Accutane is a dangerous medicine and I don't recommend it for anyone. read more

I agree with the very spacious and beautiful surroundings, but I must say he wasn't the nicest guy I've ever seen. I think the top priority for a doctor is to be good first and foremost, and this guy might be good... but he was a dick straight off the bat. If that wouldn't have been the first time I met him it would have been ok, like, "oh, I guess he's having a bad day..." but you aren't allowed a bad day with a new patient. It's dermatology, not exactly brain surgery. I could go see hundreds of other dermatologists in LA, probably the most dense city for them in the US. Call me old fashioned but I like to "know" my docs, talk to them, have a more personal relationship with them. I feel if I have a good bond with my doctor they will take better care of me and not just give me some junk that the local pharmaceutical sales person gave them. read more

I am making it my mission to spread word on the horrible treatment I received from the evil office manager at Beach Cities Dermatology. It's all about the money in this office. I had a facial scheduled and unfortunately I was unable to make it due to an emergency surgery. I had not planned that morning to have a hysterectomy and was unable to call and cancel my facial- wasn't really on my mind as I was wheeled into the O.R... Hum, would have much rather had the facial! I received a call the next day from the office manager telling me I would be billed for the missed facial because I had not provided Beach Cities Dermatology with a 24 hour cancellation notice. I returned her call after being released and tried to explain to her that I was in Torrance Memorial but that was unacceptable to her. I visited the office and provided them my hospital registration and dismissal papers. The office manager was unable to meet with me that day but true to her word, she billed me and took me to collections over a sixty dollar facial! I hope they appreciate that sixty dollars because I really appreciate sharing my experience and letting folks know what this office is really about- paying off the doctor's summer home. read more
