Calling this a "resort" is quite a stretch; instead this is an RV park with no class. Smoking is allowed, which includes chain-smoking of stinky weed all day long (right out in the open, wafting across sites), as well as more chemically things like meth or fentanyl (generally in the bathroom for the latter). Also, people seem to make it a habit to shout obscenities at their children and publicly dress them down for being children and "running [the parents'] vacation." (Maybe because they're constantly drunk.)
The rec room and store was generally unavailable. You have to happen to catch the park manager being up there in order to gain access, but it was a total mess anyway. We also had the same trouble checking in, as the email we got said to first stop at the office and then go get a site, but the manager was nowhere to be found and wasn't answering the phone number posted on the door. In hindsight, we should have gone and grabbed a spot first, and then tracked down the manager and filled out a slip for the reservation we already made online (online pre-registration says it's mandatory).
The toilets are also, for some odd reason, way too high off the floor. I'm 5'9" and my feet didn't even touch the ground when sitting on them. But, if the toilets were to be any lower, they'd certainly have to lower the stall door, because it was about as high as you can go without letting the whole would see London and France. In the men's room, there is only one toilet, but three urinals, so there was usually someone waiting for the toilet stall. In the women's room, the hand dryer was broken and so there was a roll of cheap paper towels (like you'd buy for your kitchen at Walmart) and they quickly ran out and quickly filled the tiny garbage can or spilled onto the floor.
We did not try the showers. The laundry looked fine; we only used the dryer and it worked well. The tent sites are almost as far away from the restrooms as you can get, and there is no water spigot available for the tent sites, you have to go ask an RV spot to let you fill up at theirs (that's what the manager told us to do when we asked about a spigot).
There was only one picnic table for the 4 tent sites - I think some of the RV sites had swiped the others as I saw at least one that had two picnic tables at it. It was very hard for me to use my camp stove to cook meals on my tiny lightweight backpacking table, and based on the pictures online as well as my experience at other campsites, I had packed expecting there to be a picnic table at my site.
As far as I could tell, there was no official swimming area. Several families were using an area near the tent sites to access the water, and we were cautioned that there were fish hooks in the sand under the water, so my children were too scared to use the access. Also, there were a lot of wasps and hornets around, so after encountering enough of them, my children began to become fearful of being stung just like the little girl two spots over was.
Dogs are allowed, and thankfully people generally had them on leash and were picking up after them, as requested by the camp rules. That's about the classiest part of our entire visit.
My family was not impressed. We didn't like our 8 year old having to listen to the family next door yell the F-word at their 3 year old all day long, nor to hear the family beyond them constantly swearing at their children, fighting with other as adults, and screaming at their little one for getting stung by a bee and crying in pain. We also really didn't enjoy having our airspace filled, all day long, with the nastiest weed coming from both our immediate neighbors and the ones just past them.
The site fees were very low, which was nice, but we probably won't go back for all the reasons listed above. We just went to Granite Point at Loon Lake yesterday and it was night and day better. I suppose, you get what you pay for - too bad I can't pitch my tent at Granite Point, because I don't have an RV. read more
