Unfortunately, my friend ordered an americano. When I saw the barista pumping a thermos into his cup, I asked them what they were doing. They said "Oh, we pre-make it so it's easier for us." I didn't know that coffee shops are made to be easier on the purveyors. And they clearly don't know that within 15 minutes, the precious and delicate and delicious qualities of espresso disappear. I'm still shocked by their response. Also, his Americano wasn't hot as most of those thermoses don't keep things hot enough. But at least they didn't have to stress, which seems a large concern considering no one else was in the place. Ugh.

Also for those days when I can't really be around the public: amazing food to-go! Also very vegan-friendly. THIRD OFF: the goods! the variety! whether I want local honey, some kombucha, local cheeses....milk, lassi even! pastas, spices, just visit and see for yourself. FOURTH OFF???: the homemade baked goods (best kept secret: theyre $1 after 5 pm). I live for the chocolate croissants. FIFTH OFF: super fun weekly drinks! My favorite so far: Thai iced tea. But if you're passing through rural Rensselaer county on your bike and feeling a little peckish, then Daisy's is an excellent new breakfast and lunch option just a short distance off the trail. Daisy's is brand new, so there are still kinks to work out -- our lovely waitress was struggling with her fancy electronic ordering machine, and there was a lot of confused running around in the kitchen. The food, though, was absolutely solid. My mom was a bit skeptical about the price of her BLT before she ordered, but took it back once she received her gigantic sandwich made with perfectly fresh ingredients and served with a mound of some of the tastiest Mac salad that either of us had ever had (plus a bag of chips!). My cup of the soup of the day was hot and flavorful (if slightly over over salted). The weakest link in the whole meal was the oddly soft hard roll for my breakfast sandwich: I'd ask for it toasted next time. Daisy's also serves local Tierra Farms coffee, which is a nice touch, and there were some really nice-looking treats in the pastry case. Overall this is a super cute little place that does a pretty good job of hitting the sweet spot between an old-fashioned small-town diner and a more modern cafe (with plans to add more vegetarian/vegan options to the menu). Since January 2025, there's been a noticeable shift in Beak & Skiff's priorities. Pride-related messaging and products that were previously visible have disappeared. The Pride flag was temporarily removed during the Warren Zeiders concert last summer, only to be put back up the following day. I imagine to not upset the country fans and ensure they'd buy lots of cider during the show and return for future concerts. Whatever the reason, the inconsistency raises fair questions about whether certain expressions of inclusion are actual values of Beak & Skiff's or simply as marketing strategies when convenient and culturally "cool". Going hard on the red, white and blue Americana theme at this time in our country's history is....certainly a choice. A tone-deaf one, but a choice they're entitled to. Other changes seem to reflect a greater emphasis on their bottom line being the priority nowadays. Employee perks have reportedly been reduced, local organizations have had more difficulty receiving donations, prices have increased, and more of the updated property and programming appears geared toward ticketed events (nice to see they finally added women to their live music acts after years of only white men). Activities that once helped make the orchard feel accessible to a broad range of families at varying income levels now come at a considerably higher cost. From my perspective, Beak & Skiff now seems to be catering to a narrower demographic and income level than it once did. The emphasis on community, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion feels considerably less visible than it did in prior years. For a company that has historically presented itself as family-run and community-minded, that change is unfortunate and worth acknowledging.

To disrespect anyone this way is bad enough, but to act with such blatant disdain toward a veteran with a service dog is disgraceful. Do not waste your time or money on an establishment that treats people with such contempt. Take your business anywhere else.
