This was the first stop on our wine tour this past weekend. Willow Springs Mercantile specializes in local Missouri wines, beer, and liquor. They have quite the selection to choose from in their shop! The dining area is downstairs. Brunch and a wine tasting were included in the tour. For brunch we had a frittata and a side salad, as well as a caramel brownie for dessert. We also tried three local Missouri wines. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Out shopping for holiday gifts and my husband found two great picks. A blackberry moonshine and a wine. They were having a local party in the downstairs eatery area so we unfortunately didnt get to go check it out but that just means we have more reason to return! They had a turkey and pimento cheese sandwich on their menu that I want to try! Owner was a true gem. Enjoyed chatting things up and getting to know more history about the area. I absolutely recommend Willow Spring Mercantile for both shopping and dining! I first went in years ago just to look around and didn't even realize they served food. Seeing how cute it was in there really stuck with me. Years later on a girl's trip to Excelsior, I knew this is where we needed to lunch. We stopped, got a table right away and were greeted warmly by the staff. I ordered a special grilled cheese and tomato soup combo (last one they had!) and it was really nice. Nothing super revolutionary but definitely felt like thoughtful cooking and service. They have drinks and desserts in addition to the bites. Very fun blend of an old Mercantile store mixed with a restaurant. Plenty of local sourced goods, including wines and an impressive collection of liquors and assorted sundries. Plenty of locals here. Various food selections, including wrap, sandwiches and flatbread pizzas as well as drinks and wine. Service quick and efficient. No fuss. Highly recommend the tomato bisque. Black and blue wrap is a brisket wrap. I would say as a little on the dry side but not bad. Special margarita grilled cheese sandwich was a little light on the cheese but again not bad. With one split dessert and two coffees total was around $45. A single, clean, well kept bathroom was appreciated. Prices are on the higher side, but it's a tourist place and did not seem to scare off shoppers. Street parking both sides as well as a small parking lot but be careful getting in and out of that lot as the concrete is falling apart, and he may scrape the bottom of your car. read more

We came for a day trip/date to explore Excelsior Springs that features the Historic Elms Hotel and walk around the quaint little town. While on our walk we found the Willow Spring Mercantile after our spa treatment at the Elms Hotel. I'd definitely recommend stopping by for a glass of Missouri wine while snacking on, HEMME BROTHERS CHEESE PLATE (an array of local cheeses, curds, quark, local jam and fruit with warm baked bread and crackers). It's a feel good and fun place that supports everything Missouri local from wine, cheese, and other things including what's in the gift shop. You'll have to make more than one trip here-- there are too many delicious options to choose from for one lunch, even if you order several items to share. The cheese plate was a definite win for our table. Everyone enjoyed something on it, and it's a great way to sample local flavor. The bread was devoured quickly, along with the goat cheese and jam. In the end, it came down to a Midwestern game of chicken ("You should have the last piece" "No, you have it!"). Literally nothing was left. The pizzas are super unique and flavorful. I chose the bacon and pear with gorgonzola and I loved the chipotle apricot sauce. My sister ordered the Merc Margherita. She's a big fan of pesto, and this one earned her seal of approval. We tried the daily wine selection and although I don't remember what it was called, it was great. Our server was knowledgable with recommendations, which was much appreciated, especially as it was my sister's 21st birthday! Downstairs was the restaurant which was furnished with antiques and old tablecloths. Very sweet. The menu was really interesting and the food delicious. I had an apple/Gorgonzola/bacon flatbread pizza with a side salad of mixed greens and pears and candied pecans and dried cranberries. M had a Turkey BLT and the house side salad. All of it really delicious. We ordered wine (And though I'll never request MO wine if given the option) got a seven dry white. Loved it all. Very quaint/unique and friendly. And delicious. Even better, the upstairs has a cute little store to purchase local jams, novelties, and wines. Came in for lunch post covid. Staff respected your space and so there were only limited guests. Ordered the tuna salad sandwich (on gluten free bread, and just so you know--they offer everything with a gf option) with a side broccoli and cauliflower salad, and asked for chefs choice on a rose wine. Ok first of all... whoever came up with this menu is so artistic. Who would have thought that tuna salad would be good with a curried Apple salad?!? Freaking amazing. Gluten free bread was also quite thick and yummy. I LOVED the side, very much Waldorf salad like. The pairing went well too. Just simple unpretentious well made food, best enjoyed with friends and a glass of Missouri wine. I say unpretentious but it has the right to be. I cannot say enough about the Gorgonzola pear flatbread pizza, I want to try other things but can't bring myself to do it. I've had the hot bacon dip as well as a bite or two of hubs Italian and a few of the salads, all are delicious! The servers are phenomenal and the owners are wonderful, they make you feel like you've come over to their home for lunch and you're sent home with wine and gifts. My friends and I were visiting Excelsior Springs and ended up at the Willow Spring Mercantile for lunch. What a wonderful bit of serendipity! The Mercantile's main floor is dedicated to shopping, while the entire ground floor is reserved for dining (and, at times, wine tasting). The proprietor (Daphne Bowman) is extremely friendly and welcoming, and we felt instantly at home. She showed us downstairs to a lovely corner table flanked by windows, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves gazing at the homey decor. Our meals were FABULOUS! I had the gourmet egg salad croissant, which was truly original in its blending of flavors (egg salad, gorgonzola cheese, bacon, and more) and amazingly delicious. My friends had the tropical chicken salad croissant and the Willow Spring green salad, and they both said their lunches were equally delectable. Our waitress was friendly and quite knowledgeable; she guided us through the menu and recommended excellent wine pairings for our food. I had a glass of the Stone Hill Vignoles, which was the perfect accompaniment to my sandwich. When it was time for dessert, our waitress ensured that the sea salt and caramel brownie we ordered (SO yummy!) was not only split 3 ways, but served on 3 separate plates with their own forks. How thoughtful! After lunch, we browsed the main floor shopping area and brought several wonderful trinkets home with us--and a bottle of the Vignoles. :-) Our time at Willow Spring Mercantile enriched our visit to Excelsior Springs, and we'll definitely be back--many times--to dine and shop! read more

This most recent visit I got the soup of the day (divine, as is every soup I've tried there) and the turkey BBQ sandwich. I don't know how they get their turkey so tender, but it's one of the best I've ever had. And I love that they add green onion to their spicy apple slaw, it sets it all off. Absolutely love this place! My sister and I stop here for lunch every time we attend a festival in Excelsior Springs, MO. We've tried their soups, salads, flatbreads, and wraps and everything we've ever ordered has been so delicious. I'm a huge fan of the buffalo chicken flatbread. I also recommend the apple coleslaw as a side dish. In addition to good food, they also have a huge selection of local Missouri wines to pair with your meal. We stopped by on a very, very cold day right after a winter storm. The restaurant portion of the shop was closed for the day, but we were able to get some awesome wines and chocolates. The owner was super friendly and accommodating, and even went out of her way to get us a glass of wine and make us a meal after she learned we hadn't eaten yet!
