Most people might overlook a cocktail bar within a movie theater. And those people would be missing out. Johnnies was quickly a favorite stop for a late night bite and drink. Their seasonal menus are one of my favorites in the area and the music that they play is the perfect amount of old school and new music vibe. The food is delicious. One of my favorite things that I get it every single time is the truffle fries it can get pretty busy so if you're lucky enough to grab a seat, I would suggest grabbing while you can! This place is sneaky good and seemingly under the radar. We got reservations on a Friday, but didn't need to. It was a country theme night at the jazz club and all was great. The food surprised us. We had Moraccan lollipops for the app, two kinds of salmon for dinner, and the caramel desert. All was tasty and fair priced. Our server Jackson did a great job, but undersold the food. He's probably used to it being great! The new GM was very nice. We only wished he didn't apologize for checking in with us. We liked it and he had nothing to apologize for. We always go to B&B Theater here and we would always see this place next door. We go intrigued by the live jazz that they were having/playing and it was amazing. I love live music and the people who perform here. It's just bring back those old school vibes and have a grand ole time. Also, they do have game theme nights too. Went to a Trivia night and even though I though all the questions were hard, it was just fun to play. It's a place great for a group, date, or even to bring your kids. First things first I love the decor. The restaurant is a little dark, but has pops of silver/gold and has kind of that retro jazz vibe. We came a little early in the evening for drinks and appetizers before heading to an event. Our server was great and very attentive. I ordered the Monarch Cocktail, which has Tequila, Cointreau, Jalapeno Simple Syrup, and Lime. It was delicious, very tart, and a good backdrop of heat from the jalapeno. Where they really lost me was the appetizer. I get that it's a jazz bar and not a Mexican restaurant, but at the same time, if you have it on the menu you should be able to execute it well. I think drowning chips in "cheese" sauce and tossing 4 black beans on top doesn't exactly make a plate of nachos. read more

The food was great other than the Enochi which was not very flavorful in my opinion. The pretzel bites on the other hand were packed with flavor. Came to Johnnie's on taco Tuesday before a movie. If you come in from movie door its kind of roped off and there's a sign saying to go to hostess stand by the main Johnnie's door. We decided to sit at the bar. Not sure if the lady behind bar was actually working or doing inventory or what, we sat awhile then were eventually asked, " what can I get you?" I asked for drink menu. I knew it was happy hour (from the website) but we weren't told about it and not given happy hour menu, if they have one. We got a few beers and talked awhile. We didn't see the lady that got us our beers anymore. I flagged down another lady behind the bar to ask for food menus. Eventually another lady took our food order and got us water. Thank goodness for her, can't remember her name sorry, but she was so sweet and attentive and didn't act like we were a bother to her. She said it was her first day getting to work the bar and I hope her positive attitude and willingness to give great customer service rubs off on the other two workers we encountered not the other way around. The tacos were good especially for $2 I would ask for more salsa though, it didn't seem like enough. If not for the new bartender working I would give this place a 1 for service but it gets a 3 for her and the tacos were good. Hidden little gem in the middle Liberty. Actually had a few reservations about this place since it is attached to a theater? Like how good could a restaurant be that is attached to a theater? Yet the ambiance is extremely lovely and perfect for a date night. If you check their calendar they seem to have everything from trivia to jazz performances. The plating when the food comes out - shows whoever is in the back, sincerely cares no matter if it's $10 wings or the more expensive items. I would definitely come back again, the only thing I would change is try to expand the limited menu and try to use cups that aren't plastic for the large alcoholic beverages - it does cheapen the experience. My husband, I have frequented this restaurant many times. Tonight was disappointing. 1st, we got sat and waited for over 15 minutes, and no one came to service. So, we moved to the bar. The bartenders were fabulous! We got immediate service, but when we got our dinners, my salmon might have been 3 oz for $24. I got a dinner that was blackened salmon with 2 sides which were a side salad (was an upcharge for lettuce, 1/4 roma tomato and maybe 1/4 a cucumber), and steamed broccoli. The picture is before I took a bite. I said something to the bartender (I understand he had nothing to do the portion size about the portions being awfully small, and they did comp me $5 for my meal, but I still feel this was not appropriate. I usually go and have good portion sizes as well as service. I am hopeful this visit was a one-off. read more

Love the ambiance of this place. It's in a pretty building and decorated very nice on the inside. Great place for live music and food. I had wings and a small Caesar salad and they were good. Chocolate martinis are not on the drink menu but they made one for me and it was good. There's a movie theatre inside the same building. Restrooms are pretty cool. Each stall has its own sink. We were a large group of 30 with separate checks. Somehow getting our bills became a problem for the waitress. I'm not sure what happened but I would still return. read more

First time here. We went here for diner and a movie. We arrived about 45 minutes before our movie and it was a busy Saturday night with a jazz band playing. They got us in right away and understood our time constraints. They got us our food within 20 minutes and gave us plenty of time to eat. The food was great quality and it was a very enjoyable experience. I had Cajun shrimp which came with two sides. I got the seasoned broccoli and a cup of chili. Wow, it came our and the presentation was great. The food was very tasty and the Cajun sauce was amazing. Great atmosphere. The idea here is good. Staffing is hit or miss with service. Service is a bit intrusive. Burger ordered Medium rare took 37 minutes on Tuesday evening and came out medium well/well. Charcuterie board needs appropriate plating. I expected more from the reviews. The idea is there, but fails at execution. I was expecting a demure cocktail lounge with heavy appetizers in the front vestibule of a movie theater. What I experienced was far grander and more enjoyable. The B&B Theater in Liberty serves as the location for this jazz bar and grille. Conveniently off I-35 and 152 Hwy/Kansas Ave. The business has a private parking lot. Upon arriving, there is direct access to the restaurant from the side entrance off the parking lot. There is a second access just past the main entrance to the theater ticket counter. The extremely high ceilings give a feeling of opulence. The 1920s art deco style further adds to this allure. The bar is such a focal point as you enter. Four shelves rise behind the bar to display various bottles of liquors. Flanked on either side are rows of storage lockers. Local names adorne the placards in what appears to be a reserved bottle service for high-end clients. The dining space flows over the main room and into two smaller areas facing the parking lot. The larger dining space features high-top tables and the side rooms have lower tables, some which can accommodate groups. Nestled beside the bar is a stage, which the venue offers for scheduled jazz acts. The acoustics are impressive. We could barely hear the couples a few tables from us. I feel confident the jazz ensembles would not dround the conversation among guests throughout the space. The single staff member was extremely attentive. Running the bar and tables, she was friendly and helpful. The drink menu is diverse. As a cocktail lounge, they have an impressive selection of specialty drinks, plus local beers and wines. Their lunch menu is small, but has enough range. I got the blueberry feta salad with salmon. The lemon poppyseed dressing was a wonderful fresh addition for this salad. The salmon was fully cooked and flaky. The main dining space is right off the concession area for the theater. The restaurant is ideal for parents stuck taking teens to the theater and needing a little "me time", also a good spot for a date night, girls'/guys' night event. Definitely interested in another visit during a jazz performance. A fun, chic bar for before or after show entertainment. read more

Met up with friends and gave this place a try. We decided to just have appetizers and drinks so we went with the southwest egg rolls and the charcuterie board. Both tasted great. The restaurant was very clean and the service was good. The only reason I give this place three stars instead of five is the prices. Paying $99 (not including tip) for two appetizers and six Bud Light drafts is pretty steep anywhere in KC. read more

The server came back less than a handful of times, and wasn't very friendly. But everyone has their days!! The food was actually really tasty. We had the nachos to start, the chips were crispy, the white cheese sauce was good too! I ordered the bbq chicken flatbread. It was okay. The sauce was a little spicy, but it was still good. Tried Johnnie's tonight for dinner and the music. The music was great! The food/service not so much. It took over 45 minutes to get our appetizer (they messed it up the first time and it just took forever). It also took about 45 minutes to get our dinner. Our server just didn't seem interested in our table at all. I saw other servers hustling all night, so it was really disappointing. My food was 'meh'. The salmon and broccoli were overdone. I probably won't be back to this establishment. Website stated that the band started at 530pm but when we arrived we were told it started at 630pm. Our waitress was the greatest, very nice and helpful. We asked for two different types of hamburgers but both medium cooked, they both came out cooked well done, patties weren't fresh they were frozen patties. It was my first experience BUT my parents have dined at this location multiple times. First of all the lighting is dark and almost too dark. I understand it's a jazz bar BUT the music was playing at 100 decibels and it's not a large restaurant. When we first arrived we were shown our table and we had requested not to be in a booth and were moving to a table and the hostesses were very rude and said that there is a reservation at said table. Well we were here for our reservation at 630 and would like a table. We got moved to a table and had given a drink order. Can't have a conversation as the music again was super loud. 20 minutes go and our waiter came and got our food order. We order an appetizer and then shortly ordered our food. As we finish our appetizer, which was just supreme pizza in a wonton, the owners of the theater walks in and they are seated at the reserved table. They were served with kindness and quickly at that and here is goes an hour later and still no food. People who got there after us were already getting their bills and out the door. All we ordered was 3 burgers and a chicken sandwich. In that hour we waited our waiter never came to check on us. Everybody was too focused on the owners of the theater and getting whatever they needed and making their table bigger. We finally got our food and immediately asked for the check to pay so that way when we were done eating we could leave. We even had to get up and get our own water jug as once our food was given nobody came to check or even look at us. It was such a terrible experience and never again will I personally go. The worst people were your hostesses. Super nice to the owners but not so much with anybody else. I get it they showed up but service shouldn't change just because the big wigs are there. read more

I have been wanting to try out this place for a while. Once I did I was a bit disappointed. I went in during the week for dinner and the place was dead. However the service was rather poor and slow. Prices on drinks were over priced and what I got for food wasn't much more impressionable. Burgers and fries were ordered, yet we had to ask for all condiments, which took longer to arrive than expected. There was only one restroom for men and women, so there was a wait to use it. I really wanted this to be a nice jazz venue in the Northland. But it's much like if Disneyland opened a "jazz club" on Main Street. It's opened to the movie theater lobby and the smell of popcorn on one side which really kills the ambiance. The decor is a little forced. The furniture layout in front of the stage is more for socializing than watching the entertainment. It's currently drawing decent musicians though I wonder how long that will last. The food is mediocre as is the service. I'm guessing it's managed by the theater management and not by somebody experienced in restaurants. read more

A great place to celebrate being Cancer Free Yesterday I got the call I was waiting for so my wife and I made the decision to celebrate with a meal at Johnnies Jazz Bar with two family members. We both the split blueberry-Feta salad and had the Bourbon Glaze Pork chops, but did not split the wine. Everything was fantastic. The food, the older gentleman's with the piano braces service, knowledge and explanation of food and wine, the ambiance, and the live music of course. Came in on a Wednesday night. I thought it would be busier considering the live entertainment. I loved the ambiance and listening to the acoustic guitar play in the background. The restaurant was a lot bigger than I thought. Reading past reviews they have clearly expanded the menu. I ordered the salmon which was cooked perfectly, asparagus risotto and the brussel sprouts. I was hoping for more char on the sprouts. They tasted a bit vinegary and I couldn't eat them. I wouldn't order them again. The stuffed mushrooms were good and I ordered them as an appetizer. You get four medium sized mushrooms. I definitely plan on coming back. The service was great but there was only one other couple here. This would be a great date night place. The music was loud so you couldn't really hear what the person next to you was saying. But I really did like the atmosphere and can tell this would be a cool place to hangout after work. Johnnies came through with high marks for both a late night toddy with friends, as well as great lunch date with teens! Inside the theater so grab dinner before you check out a movie. You will find they host great jazz musicians several nights a week, and serve top shelf cocktails. Find a cozy couch to relax and enjoy drinks and snack on apps, or find a quieter table in back corner and eat a full meal. We hit up trivia on a Saturday with teens. Ordered "bar type food" all came out prompt and warm. I had bacon and brussels sprouts, reminded me of German Potato salad but only made with brussels sprouts, has a vinegary kick. I never write reviews but hopefully this will save someone the poor experience or money or even better yet, the mgmt takes heed & improves on the quality of the food & service. After mentioning it to our server & speaking with management...I felt as if I was just a problem to them. Not as if they really cared about my concerns. The "prime rib & risotto" was honestly the worst I've ever had & shouldn't have been served. In addition, the wrong beer being dispensed from the tap. Ordered a wheat & it obviously was a pale ale. They brought another which was the same pale ale variety. The dessert served was a chocolate mousse. It was beyond bad. Thin like skim milk. Just dripped off the spoon. Stick to drinks & J Love.
