I really love this joint! It's so cute and reminds me of my glory days back in highschool! the sweet potato fries are just great! When it comes to food, their is nothing better than a hole in the wall restaurant that caters to a certain niche within the industry successfully. The only item I have ever tried off the menu was the Niki Special, which is gyros on a burger with all the trimmings. While enjoying this feast I did feel my heart shed a few tears, but it was worth it. The flavor of this beast is unlike anything I have ever tried in a burger. The fries were also pretty damn tasty and complemented the burger nicely. On a later visit my buddy ordered some sweet potato fries and I tried those for the first time. We've been living in Wilmette for a few years and I just learned about this place last week! It's literally a hole in the wall on Central in downtown Wilmette with a small counter seating area. We got there for an early dinner at 5pm and were the only customers except for a few folks who popped in to pick up to-go orders. My husband ordered the gyro chesseburger, which was amazing. The gyro meat was perfectly cooked. I ordered a cheeseburger, which was delicious but the patty was very thin. Most adults would probably want to get a double. The grilled cheese was also yummy and enough for our young ones to share. Casual, friendly service. You see everything cooked right from the counter. So awesome to discover a "dive" burger place like this in Wilmette! We will be back! read more

Chuck Wagon is amazing. I grew up about 4 blocks from the restaurant, and ever since moving to DC, the first thing I do when coming home is go to Chuck Wagon. The Gyros are top notch and Burgers are tough to beat. Up until now, I thought the one thing they were missing was cheese fries and cheddar burgers. When home for thanksgiving, I learned Chuck Wagon adopted Merkts cheese and started creating cheese fries and cheddar burgers....my life is now complete. I was in town and feeling hungry but not certain what I wanted to eat. I saw the recommendation for the Nikki and thought why not? I wasn't disappointed. Piled high with gyros meat and all the fixens this sandwich was delicious. They have a nice little grouping of tables and chairs outside so I took my Nikki to go and enjoyed a nice fall day while eating lunch. My only complaint? No iced tea just soft drinks. read more

The Chuck Wagon has re-invented the hot dog, called "The Aarons Wiener" This hot dog is wrapped in bacon, then deep fried, topped with onion rings, melted cheese, gyro meat, hot peppers and a pickle is sure not to disappoint! I have been going to Chuck Wagon for over 10 years. While I do not live in Wilmette anymore it is always a stop when I am in town. I recommend the Niki Special which is a cheese burger, with grilled onions and topped off with a generous portion of gyro meat. This combination is fantastic. The Waitress Special, which is a gyro patty melt, is also good. The new owners of the place have done a great job cleaning the place up, adding outdoor seating and introducing additional menu items. read more

As I have said in a previous review, I have lived in Wilmette all my life. I used to bike over to Chuck Wagon when I was working at the hardware store as a Teen. I have never had a better Gyro. Ever. I have tasted ones from as far away as California and Maine, and have tried every one that has ever been recommended to me. Chuck Wagon's is the best. Hands down. I will always remember calling Chuck Wagon affectionately as Sam's after the former owner (may he rest in peace), and I thank God that the current owners have held true to Sam's recipes and traditions. I wish I could tell you more about the other food there, but except for the fries (exceptional by the way), soda (run of the mill), and the VERY occasional hot dog (good all around), I really only go there for the Gyros. It's awesome, and I'm super glad an old friend introduced me to the place. read more

As a kid I peddled my bike to the Chuck Wagon the year it opened, 1974, and have loved it ever since! The gyros is the best in the US. Nothing anywhere else comes close. Fresh, hot, abundant and delicious. Fries in a paper sack, what's not to love. When I pass through Wilmette every year or so, I make sure to drop in for lunch. Sasha is a wonderful heir to the traditions started by Sam: great food, value and service. read more

Even though Sam, the longtime Greek owner and cook, passed away a few years ago and his family sold the business, the new owner has kept the same menu and vendors...thank god. Great authentic hand carved gyros and cheeseburgers cooked on the flat grill. Also, the Niki Special (cheesburger with gyros) and Waitress Special (grilled cheese with gyros) are superb creations. Better for carryout but they do have about 8 cramped stools along the front counter and another 5 or so facing the back wall. Gyros, fries, burgers (even together in the Nicky's special - a cheeseburger with gyro meat!). What makes it great? Its the tradition of going there with your sons or buddies for a gut bomb (and I mean that as a high compliment). I would never go here with my wife, but the Chuck Wagon is my sons' favorite place for lunch on Saturdays.
