I'm trying to find the right words to adequately praise Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital…read more(MVRH), its staff, and Dr. Kelly Larabee, an Emergency Physician whose compassion and professionalism made an extraordinarily difficult day more bearable. While traveling from northern New Hampshire to Boston, we stopped in Woburn and discovered that one of our very elderly dogs could no longer get out of the car on her own. When she finally did, her rear legs collapsed beneath her. In addition to the weakness in her hind legs, she was breathing rapidly and drooling excessively. As a longtime dog owner, I recognized the look in her eyes immediately--the look that says, "It's time." Fortunately, we were less than a mile from Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, a Level 1, 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. We arrived without an appointment and were met by a team that was immediately welcoming, compassionate, and remarkably efficient. It was clear from the moment we walked through the door that MVRH has built a system of care designed to deliver expert treatment with both urgency and empathy. Our dog was promptly brought into the treatment area and made comfortable. Shortly thereafter, we met Dr. Kelly Larabee, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern were evident from our first conversation. Dr. Larabee confirmed what we had feared but already suspected--that the time had come for our beloved companion to cross the rainbow bridge peacefully. Dr. Larabee and her team brought an extraordinary degree of humanity to veterinary emergency medicine. They treated our dog with dignity, tenderness, and respect, as though she were a member of their own family. During one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can experience, they provided not only exceptional medical care but also comfort and compassion for us. I am not sure the average pet owner--or member of the public--fully appreciates the expertise, systems of care, and operational excellence that make an institution like Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital function so effectively. Having spent much of my career in process engineering, I was deeply impressed by both the efficiency of their operations and the quality of care they delivered. Every aspect of our experience reflected a well-designed system staffed by highly skilled professionals who never lost sight of the human and emotional side of their work. Dr. Larabee and the entire MVRH team were as compassionate as they were capable, and as caring as they were efficient. Their professionalism and humanity turned a heartbreaking day into one marked by dignity, peace, and gratitude. We would all be fortunate to receive the same standard of care in human medicine.

I booked an appointment online with them on a Saturday for the following Wednesday. I also received a confirmation of this visit. When I arrived first thing in the morning, I was told by the (Very nice and sweet) vet tech that the doctor wasn't in this week. I was shocked considering they had several days to call, text, email, or send a carrier pigeon and let me know that I wouldn't be able to be seen. Additionally, from reading other review online, it sounds like this vet needs to retire or hire another person to help him run the business if he's planning on being out of town so often. He also sounds like he is lacking in bedside manner and doesn't take the time to actually get to know your pet or their illness. There are about 3 other vets within a 3 mile radius of this place, choose one of those.

The problem is Dr Jawitz is the only vet and only works until "lunch time" and also frequently travels for a week at a time. So it's very likely you will need a vet and your vet won't be working. My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes and on the call when Dr Jawitz told me the diagnosis he told me he doesn't treat chronic conditions because he's not in the office enough and recommended I take my cat to the veterinary hospital for treatment. So basically as long as your pets are easy to treat Dr Jawitz is great but when you really need a vet for a sick pet he'll tell you to go to the hospital. Thankfully I found another vet in Stoneham that was happy to treat my cat's chronic condition.

I am beyond disappointed with Banfield Pet Hospital and especially the management at this location…read more I booked an appointment TWO DAYS in advance for my dog, who is limping and clearly in pain. The appointment was scheduled for 5:30 PM. Then, the MORNING OF THE APPOINTMENT, I get a call saying they suddenly need to reschedule due to a "conflict." This has happened repeatedly with this location -- almost every later-day appointment I've booked somehow ends up needing to be moved. At this point, it feels less like bad luck and more like they simply don't want to honor late appointments. When I politely pointed out that this keeps happening, I was given a vague "system error" excuse. Then I was told they "wouldn't be able to do X-rays that late." As someone familiar with animal handling and basic veterinary procedures, I asked whether they were assuming sedation would be needed, because for a dog of this size and the location of the injury, sedation would likely be unnecessary and the positioning for the X-ray would be very straightforward. Instead of having a professional conversation, the manager became defensive and accused ME of being rude. He then lectured me about staffing shortages and implied I should have just taken time off work. That response was unbelievably inappropriate and dismissive. Pet owners schedule appointments in advance specifically because many of us work full-time jobs and rely on the appointment time we were given. I understand staffing issues happen. What I do NOT understand is repeatedly canceling or moving appointments last minute and then treating concerned pet owners with disrespect when they question it. The most concerning part is that this behavior came from the manager himself. If this is how management handles clients, it explains a lot about the ongoing issues at this location. I will be escalating this to corporate because this was unacceptable customer service and, more importantly, poor care coordination for an animal in pain.

NIcole's review is filled with erroneous lies about the conditions at talgere's and the condition of his dogs. Our little pug Jessie in fact lived to be 16. I also met the vet who delivers Talgere pups and provides general care to his dogs and he spoke very highly of Tony. I recenlty adopted a beautiful 5 year old Boston Boy and he is sweet, affetionate, playful and handsome...hardly what you would expect if the conditions described by Nicole were true. It is interesting to note that Nicole has written other scathing reviews about other agencies on yelp, such as Topsfield fair.

The moment I ask, "Do you want to go to school?" my dog is up and ready, heading straight for the door. It's such a joy to see her excitement as we drive down the street - she knows exactly where we're going and I can't contain her enthusiasm, bouncing from window to window. When we finally pull up, I have to brace myself because she drags me to the front door, eager to get inside. It's adorable how her whole-body wiggles like an "S" when she's excited - it never fails to make me laugh. Under the new ownership, which has been in place since 2023, Pet Companions Bed and Biscuit has only improved. The facility looks better than ever, with separate rooms for chilling out, enjoying treats, solving puzzles, and even taking nature walks with the staff. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! There's so much more for the dogs to do besides playing with their friends. They even offer grooming and cageless boarding. This place is truly amazing, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
