Ok place to shop, but the employees totally ignore the customers when they are working in a produce area you are trying to get in. They also have huge lines, because the checkers are few and work at one slow pace. Costco is getting just as bad in Spokane on slow check outs, too, though. I had a very disappointing and embarrassing experience today at WinCo Foods during self-checkout. I was purchasing groceries along with a bottle of wine for Valentine's Day, and my younger brother was with me. All of the self-checkout registers froze waiting for an associate, and several of us stood there for about 5 minutes because no employee was available anywhere. When someone finally went to find her and she returned, she snapped back saying she was "helping someone else," even though she hadn't been around when we were all waiting. When Teresa (an older lady employee) came over, she was noticeably rude and short with customers and even murmured that we "look way too young" (for reference, I am 22). I was still scanning my groceries, and she told me to scan the wine in front of her. I showed my ID as requested, but she then demanded ID from my younger brother as well, even though he was not making a purchase. When I tried to politely explain that he is a minor and was not buying anything, she told me to "stop being rude," canceled my transaction, and loudly announced across the self-checkout area that no one should sell me alcohol. This was extremely humiliating and confusing, as I had done nothing wrong. She then spoke with other cashiers while pointing at us, which made the situation even more uncomfortable. I fully respect store policies regarding alcohol sales, but the way this situation was handled felt unprofessional and unnecessarily public. I left feeling embarrassed and upset. I hope management can address this so other customers are treated with more courtesy and discretion in the future. read more

A recount from a dear friend visibly shaken, walked out of WinCo on Sprague without her groceries due to the behavior of a male employee, who has a horrible reputation with many of us due to horrible customer service skills. He also lacks basic hygiene and has little to no manners, including scratching his butt with vigor. Because she had a few more items in her cart than posted, (the checkout lanes were poorly staffed and very long), she used the empty self-check out. She was almost done and this employee walks up, swipes his card deleting her purchase, and with a smirk, says no. She walked out. Neither of us will be back. This store is an insult to shoppers. I won't go back On a Thursday at 1:00 p.m. The store looked half stocked, and filthy. The produce was either non- existent, begining to go bad, or actively rotting. The only bag of bulk gf rolled oatmeal was filthy and covered in boot prints. By the time we got to the meats , and saw the swollen packs of chicken, we were done, and walked out empty handed. I've shopped at this store for 8 years. I've never loved it, but it was convenient, and I thought I was saving money. I put up with the rude employees, the filthy produce dept, and the questionable meat dept that seems to specialize in steaks that oftentimes are hacked up on the back side and packed pretty side up, and big hunks of fat hidden on the underside of roasts, and let's not forget the over saturated pads at the bottom on the meat trays that can add an extra 8 oz to the weight of the package. The bright note is the we were able to shop the sale items at Rosauers, and Yokes, get what we needed and had a pleasant experience. Fantastic produce and meats, clean stores. Nice employees, and it didn't cost us anymore than WinCo! It took up less time to shop the other 2 stores than a single shop in WinCo. It's unfortunate that store is manager so poorly. I've shopped at many WinCo stores in OR. WA. and ID. I have liked some better than others to be sure, but never have I been so consistently disgusted by a store as this. Cheap groceries. Meat and bakery items are just ok. And bath items (deodorant, shampoo, etc) are generally more expensive than Walmart but they have a good selection and definitely saves you money on weekly shopping. They claim it is employee-owned but that seems more of a gimmick than reality, but it is not important to the rating. Can they set policy and share in profits - a small once a year bonus is not the same as true profit sharing. If they can't, as a group, make unique changes to their store, they are NOT owners. If they don't share in profits, they are NOT owners. Canned goods, cereal, etc have decent prices although their generic canned food is significantly lower quality than generics from Fred Meyer, for example. Probably worse than Walmart's nasty generic brand. Produce is abysmal. Low quality, doesn't last long. Not good. Meats are hit and miss, but prices are decent. Wait for a sale at Fred Meyer and you can get much better quality at similar cost. Large selection though and they have things that aren't as commonly found elsewhere. They have lots of trash meats for various types of fishing bait. That is a big plus in my book. Their "fresh" seafood is anything but fresh. Their frozen fish is hit and miss. Most of their frozen packaged stuff is subpar, even taking into consideration the low quality of packed frozen stuff. The generic frozen vegetables are abysmal. They do carry frozen cornish game hens and things like that which are becoming rare elsewhere. Grocery store bakeries are bad, this is no exception. Scratch that, it is lower quality than average, better than the crap at the Walmart bakery but that is a very low bar. That bar may be buried a few feet underground. Large bulk food selection of wildly varying quality. If you spend a lot of time you can find decent stuff, that might not be stale or just plain ancient. Their deli blows chunks but they have things like cheddar cheese in the deli that is alright for the price. It doesn't matter where you go: cheddar, colby, jack, etc are simply low quality "cheeses" but for the price the cheddar that is not in a normal commercial package is acceptable for such things. Kids will eat it and those types are infinitely better than that fake "American 'Cheese'". The deli has fake "Chinese food" packaged up. Avoid it, unless you want to spend the evening in the bathroom, assuming you can choke it down. Non-food items are ridiculously expensive and much of it is extremely low quality. Avoid! It is an okay place to stock up on non-perishables. Store is always kind of dirty. Cashiers are always undermanned. Waiting in lines takes forever. Having to bag your own groceries is ridiculous. Do what the military commissary does, allow volunteer baggers that can accept tips, if you are too cheap to hire a few kids to bag groceries. It is not like you need more than 2 or 3 since you never have more lanes up than that anyway. They make up the discounted, low quality foods by trying to get you to buy over the counter medication, TP, bags, etc at massively inflated prices. Don't fall for it! If you live within 10 minutes it is worth it to go to stock up on canned goods and then go to a quality store for meats, dairy and produce. It is not worth the drive if you are much further than that. I might stop by if I am in the area and I need canned stuff. It is always a depressing visit, for some reason it feels dark inside, must be the dirtiness and general dour demeanor of it alleged "owners". There are certainly one or two grocery stores in the valley that are worse, but not more than that. read more

I am so glad that Winco has come to Spokane. It has forced other grocery stores to be more competetive. You cannot beat Winco's prices on dry goods like spices. Yes, even better than Wal Mart, whose corporate policies make me not want to shop their unless I have no other choice anyway. Selection overall is pretty good, and employees here are pretty friendly. May not be the prettiest atmosphere, but the grocery stores that try to spruce things up hit you in the pocketbook for it (You listening Safeway?) so that doesn't really bother me. Someone else noted organic. Again, I don't give a crap, because having grown up on a farm I know that organic means it could have all kinds of bad stuff. We have lived in Spokane for 5 years, and just realized there are 2 in Spokane! We love winco! Their bulk department, their produce department is huge, and the prices in their meat department are crazy. I've noticed we are saving an average of 40 to 50 dollars a week in groceries by shopping here. That's huge with 2 teen boys in the house! OK so their staffing in each department is overly staffed like other stores, and you have to bag your own groceries. But if you're like my wife, she prefers to bag her own groceries! I will say... on the downside... I purchased lunch meat from their deli yesterday, And it had no flavor. It was italian roast beef, and it didn't even taste like roast beef. So I will give them one more try before I give up on that... But for the most part? Overall... we drive the 35 minutes to save! read more

Many most popular items from a few producers are not available here such as Turkey Chilli and Thomas Cinnamon raisin muffins. Winco Skim Milk tastes good. This is the only 24 hour grocery store within a five mile radius. When you have a sick family member and have to run out in the middle of the night to go get them supplies, it would be great if you could walk in the building without having to watch someone doing their business just outside the front door. On top of that, they did not have what I needed. No one in the store offered to help me find what I was looking for. I was standing in an aisle that was being stocked for five minutes looking for something and not once was I asked if I needed help. So not only did I not feel safe about walking into this store after midnight because the parking lot was not well lit and some guy was peeing on the building, no one on the staff seemed to want to be helpful and get me out of this creepy location faster. Ended up driving elsewhere and finding what I needed. Next time I need something in the middle of the night, I know where NOT to shop. read more

I generally don't get excited about grocery stores, but the bulk section alone of WinCo is worth a review! I am really into cooking, so finding staples at an affordable price is awesome. Plus, as a vegan cook in a generally un-vegan-friendly area, it was delightful to see "weird" items in bulk that cost an arm and leg at other places (vital wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, for example). There is an excellent selection of flours, sugars, nuts, and other basic staples. It's also wonderful to have the option to get fresh-ground peanut butter, not to mention agave and oils in bulk. These are all things you can get at other stores, but they are dramatically cheaper at WinCo. I don't eat meat, so I can't speak to the meat section, which seems to have been a problem for some others, but I can say that I have never had issues with the produce. I generally buy fresh produce rather than bagged options, and they tend to have a wide variety of items. They also have organic, if that's your thing. Finally, I found it ironic that they are the only place I've found unmarinated/unflavored tempeh, and they have one of the most robust selections of tofu. There really is something for anyone here if you take the time to explore. I don't really understand the vitriol about having to bag your own groceries. It's not an entirely unheard of issue. They don't bag your groceries in bulk stores, for example, and many cities have started banning plastic bags. It just seems like an absurd reason not to shop somewhere, especially if it means the prices remain lower, but if that's a problem for you, you're probably wise to avoid the store. They DO have self checkout now (yay!), and it's usually smooth. They have an "about 15 items" limit, so that helps. read more

WinCo is owned by their employees. They try to cut down costs by 1) you bagging your own groceries which I don't think is a big deal and 2) they don't accept credit cards to avoid the fees. You save a lot of money if you're here for produce, their huge bulk section and meats. The sun-dried tomato turkey deli meat is delicious! On the downside, they don't always have the freshest produce. Their prices for packaged and canned item are almost always not the cheapest. They're open 24/7 so that's pretty convenient! The people who work here are usually very friendly. Yesterday, my total came to $14.99. I handed the cashier $20 and asked if he had a penny tray (because I didn't want to take the change). He misunderstood and thought I needed a penny so he started looking through the change in his pocket. I realized I needed to explain myself. Usually i like the wincos in portland so i tried it out, but the last time we went in a bunch of employees were not wearing a mask while stocking food items, i decided not to buy anything today cus i saw an employee without a mask cough on a product, and a couple dudes walked like within a yard of us without their masks, gross. I literally have asthma and use two types of inhalers and can wear a mask all day at my job, so i don't get what the excuse is. Good prices and the store looked great however there were at least 10 people shopping not wearing masks despite the big sign on the door that requires masks. It would be nice if they would enforce it now that infection rates are on the rise again and we are at risk of going back to faze 2. Time to update my original review of Winco as some things have changed. So most of the produce doesn't really float my boat anymore, having gotten accustomed to finding "better" stuff around town and/or at Greenbluff. Still a few things reign supreme: - usually the best prices on cauliflower, broccoli, beets and brussel sprouts - ginger (albeit from China and seldom the freshest, but still the cheapest in town) - shiitake and oyster mushrooms The seafood department for the VALLEY Winco is still the best in town in regards to price, selection and turnover: - whole seasonal wild salmon (sockeye, coho, king, keta) - wild U16-22 wild American Shrimp as low as $7/lb - best prices on the biggest snow crab around, as low as $6.50/lb - whole baby squid $2/lb. - shell on oysters at times $.50ea - whole Pacific rockfish ~$3/lb or fillets less than $5/lb This is just a small selection I've mentioned re: the fresh and frozen seafood. Seriously the best prices and variety in town. Unfortunately the ducks and Cornish hens have gone up in price, but still the cheapest in town. Tofu continues to be the best price in town at $1.28/16oz medium and $1.28/12oz firm. Still only take debit card, check or cash. Still my favorite market in Spokane. As usual I've only highlighted a few choice things about this market that I really enjoy, but try it out for yourself. One big caveat - the Northside Winco is a whole other beast and that one is ugly. read more
