Holy Toledo what a bakery! First time I was recommended to a place in South Boston that I feel is totally worth putting on the map! Such a super cute bakery FILLED with goodies. We were a little confused at first, then realized you have to fill out an order form for sandwiches. Totally fine. You get to choose up to 3 meats and or cheeses for $5.49. There is just something about having your meat cut fresh to order. The persons behind the counter were all super sweet. Bakery items galore! From donuts to fresh made pies, and almost everything in between. They have packaged products like chocolate covered nuts and pretzels all the way to candles and signs. The donuts must also be amazing because by the time we got there, they were completely sold out. I got a sandwich, kettle cooked chips, 2 bottled drinks, a cinnamon bun, and banana chips for $20. The cinnamon bun itself weighs about 2 lbs! And they were hot out of the oven, I could not resist. Let's just say, every time I am in SoBo, I will be making a stop here. read more

I stopped in around 12 noon during the week to get lunch. The establishment was packed, with maybe 25 people or more, waiting on food. You have to fill out an order form and turn it into the sandwich makers. I got a turkey and cheese sandwich, chips and water. It cost around $8.00, which was a fair price. The sandwich was small, and it was okay, nothing extra. I am downloading the picture. They also had donuts, eclairs, pies, cakes, and cookies. I think they have soups, and there was a small salad bar. They had canned items, like apple butter and preserves. There was also candy and nuts. There are tables inside, and a couple of tables outside. Windmill Farm Bake Shop is a decent place for a quick lunch, but nothing extra. It is close to the hospital. read more

Delicious food and friendly service! They have great sandwiches, soups, a salad bar, and a variety of desserts. There is plenty of seating.

My favorite is their vegetable soup and chocolate pie. However, everything is fresh and delicious.

Finally went to the store and it is adorable! It's apparently an Amish shop. We ordered the mixed donuts and the blueberry muffins. The donuts were not as good as the brownies, cinnamon twists, and muffins, but were okay. Note that they don't always have everything in stock or it might be baking when you get there so if you're going for something specific I would call in advance to make sure they have it. Now, the muffins were SO YUMMY. They tasted homemade. If I had this store near where I lived, I would go there everyday instead of baking myself. I in fact am craving their bluberry muffins right now. I wish I had tried their morning glory muffins but maybe I'll get a chance to visit this area again sometime in the future! read more

Real good tasty place to eat. They serve sandwiches and salads. The sandwiches are Deli meats plus homemade chicken salad. The salads are freshly made also. They have tons of desserts..you think of it they make it, did I mention they are homemade also. The troyer's Dressing is amazing! Everything is always fresh and the donuts are a must. You can not eat at a better place in the South Boston area. I just wish I lived closer to the bakery, would eat there all the time. Another tip is to call and order the sandwhich rolls ahead of the time and then you can buy the dressing and have sandwhiches all week! Wonderful comfort food and amazing desserts. Pros: good food, you can place special orders for food for holidays, meetings, etc... pretty decent prices as well Cons: no waitresses, you have to grab a piece of paper to fill out if you order a sandwich, the service is kind of slow. Lastly, it is very crowded with barely and tables to eat at however they have changed locations to a bigger building, so I am not sure if it is still crowded. read more

Love going to this place when I'm in town every year in Oct. They have a great small menu lunch sandwich shop option. I always get the sliced roast beef sandwich with a slice of sharp cheddar. What puts this place over the top is the fresh baked bread and dessert options. As good as the roast beef and cheddar team up together the fresh bread puts it over the top. They have a wide dessert selection including many types of slices of pie and the ever popular jumbo donuts. If you ever find yourself in South Boston, VA during lunchtime hours give this place a try. read more

I have never been here when it was not busy. Why? Because people love this place. If you know anything about Halifax and South Boston you know there are not many reasons to visit this small town, BUT we have made the 30 minute drive just to eat at Windmill many times. Every ingredient is as good as I could imagine them being. The main thing to come for is their sandwiches. Cheap, simple, DELICIOUS. I have tried some of their baked goods and other things and they are great as well. If you are nearby, take the time to go grab something, especially a sandwich. Not a huge selection in this town, but this establishment is excellent for lunch. don't let the crowd scare you off, the counter service is pretty quick. If you are looking for the best chocolate pie in the area, this is the place. Windmill is an Amish bakery with fresh treats out of the oven daily. I love this place. My son's favorite cake is Strawberry and no one makes this flavor of cake often. I went in today ordered some cupcakes to be picked up tomorrow - gonna surprise him at school. Had a great first visit and was impressed with the food. Today, stopped in to treat my so to a glazed doughnut. Stood in line for 15 min as the South Boston resident customers cut in front of people, carried on conversations with their friends in line this slowing it down even further. Lo' and behold, finally get to the counter at 11:30AM to be told, they are out of doughnuts. Is this a bake shop? Perhaps, I read the sign wrong. Would love to support a Christian based business. The Windmaill Bakery is the best bakery I've ever been to! The homemade breads are delicious. The chicken salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, and the cappicinno mix are all delicious!!!! Stopped there Tuesday am(3-6-12), bought chocolate pie(Delicious), Tea Ring(suffered from too many raisins and was not well assembled,Cinnamon and raisins were carelessly spread, though on a delicious dough) and six freshly cooked glazed doughnuts(Delicious-we couldn't stop eating until they were devoured).
