Seven acres of park and lakes. Also a sanctuary to local domestic rescue animals…read more Umbrella Cockatoos are rescued in abundance here. Looks like at least 50 previously pet Cockatoos are gently housed at Gilcrease Sanctuary, along with numerous animals, miniature ponies, pot bellied pigs, goats, peacocks, parrots, turkeys, geese, ducks, chickens. I've seen local performers and music venues on there stage and open theater.

It's been a really long time since we've been here, our now-teenager was a wee one, and the goats…read morewere running wild throughout the sanctuary. And one was lost, wandering outside of it. At the time, there was a Donation, instead of Admission. There are a lot of Signs, posted, stating, "Do not touch. We bite." Under Construction- the back, adding some concrete walkways, along with some nice signs. This is also noted on the Map that you get when you pay Admission. It was $30 for us, two adults and two kids. It was a sunday when we visited. Special Price on Wednesdays, $5 each. This is where the donkeys, Valentina and Rico, are located. If you are lucky, you will also see the llama, Confetti, and the white sheep, but I forgot the name. It looks like there are three areas for the goats, in the front pen, in the middle pen, and the feeding area in the back, that's where Sugar and Pepper are. In the back, also, are the miniature horses- a light one and a dark one, which were eating the whole time we were there, so we didn't get a good look at them. But their small size makes them super cute. I've always liked the mini's. Like, dating back to when I was a kid and would see them at special events in the Bay Area. Also in the back, are the hog (which is huge) and the pot-bellied pig (smaller). On the back, last, but not least, there is an emu and an ostrich. I can't tell you which, because I was getting confused. There was one and there was two of each of those birds. Large flightless birds are interesting, and to think, there is a prehistoric quality about them; look at their talons and feet. I really like the amphitheater. There is some shade near the colorful picnic tables. The bathroom was open and available, however, no paper products for when you wash your hands. Also, all of the Sanitizer dispensers were empty. Seeing the ducks and geese at the man made lake was neat. They were approaching us, as if we had food to give them. So they are used to Visitors. Nearby were chickens, roosters, and peacocks. The Aviary is a really cool place. But watch out for those mischievous parrots, who were aiming to poop over the walkway through the chain link fence. It sounded like rain! And it barely missed our son's friend. The cockatoos are the star of the show here. Some of them can talk. In addition to saying "Hello", or "Hi" one of them says, "Goodbye." The birds at the front of the sanctuary were really neat to see too. Did you see the pair of black birds with the black poop? One bird said, "What's up?" There were small koi in the koi pond at the very front. There were a lot more animals the last time we visited. But who knows, maybe some of the animals were moved, to a different place, or maybe, some of them passed away.

This is a great hidden secret in the valley!!!! The place is run by the University of Nevada at…read moreReno. It's a test field for creating better crops for arid regions of the world that do not need to rely on as much water in order to create better production. A family member of mine, got her degree as a Master Gardener and did a majority of her time working at this place. So knowing family was here, I'd say it's a valuable location to come to. Let's say you are wanting to know how to get a garden growing in your yard - you have tried and everything has turned into charred leaves and stalks with no crops or flowers. Well - you can learn from the Master Gardeners just how to make that backyard garden flourish and thrive with productivity or even just to keep it alive! Spend a little time working with these folks, you can learn how to DIY your own backyard to make it a thriving location and learn when the best time to pick fruits and veggies off the vines and trees. In addition volunteering with these folks you can take fresh produce home (they will be bird pecked or bruised, don't expect perfection) at no charge. And even if you don't want to vounteer your time, and just want to pick up some nice fresh produce - well you can certainly buy what they have in supply as it is in season. Don't expect to just pick it yourself though. They are pretty restrictive about that. Prices for their produce are fairly reasonable. All proceeds from the food sales are directed back into the costs for all the work involved in keeping the farm running. Cash only. Their hours are restricted to Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will know if they are open when you see the gate open. You have to park on the side of the street as there is no true parking lot.

I love this place, I go here whenever I can to get free mulch for my garden! The workers/volunteers…read moreare extremely helpful, esp if you want mulch in bulk. They will use their own tools to help out loading your truck so you don't have to shovel all of that yourself. I haven't actually gone inside the orchard to see what they have, but it looks so nice in there and there's a lot to see!! I'm excited for my next trip there.

Booking is very simple if you visit the libraries website and search horses 4 heroes. Some pros: All of the staff were very nice. The animals were all very nice too. There were porto potties. Some cons: the milking station was pretty gross. I peeked into the bucket of water (that feeds the udders) and there was a slime/sediment in the bottom of the bucket with mosquito larva swimming around. Not sanitary. The bedding for the goats was entirely made of poop. It must have been weeks since it has been cleaned. Not sanitary. I also think it would be nice to have hand sanitizer or a proper hand washing station directly next to the entrance for the goats for this reason in particular. The water the animals (goats and sheep) had to drink also looked cloudy and had a smell. My last complaint is that it was $10 for a horse ride that lasted maybe 2 minutes? I mean I thought for $10 they could ride a BIT longer. Especially because there was no one else waiting. I will still give this business 4 stars because of how friendly and accommodating they were. Please be aware of sanitary conditions and take proper precautions for you and your family.
