Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy little establishment located in Historic Downtown Golden. I liked the colorful chalkboard menu and lived in book shelves. We came here around 11AM for a shot of caffeine to put a little pep into our step. ICED CHAI CHARGER ($4): Comes with two shots of espresso. The Chai was mild and thirst quenching. 3/5 GOLD DIGGER FRAP ($4.35): Comes with espresso, chocolate, caramel, and milk. The brother-in-law got this. No complaints. 3/5 ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH FRAP ($4.35): Comes with espresso, chocolate, mint, and milk. I couldn't taste the mint flavor and thought the gold digger and rocky mountain tasted quite similar. Husband thought it was okay. 3/5 SERVICE: Kind of weird. The cashier was all frowns, no smiles. She didn't give us a receipt, but she offered a receipt to my brother-in-law. The employees making the drinks seemed to be a little frazzled. 2/5 Worth a Return Visit? Incredibly friendly service upon entering the restaurant. The server promptly brought out our highchair and helped clean the table. They have a dirty/clean sign on the table that you turn over when you leave so they know to clean it. I ordered the meat breakfast sandwich and everything from the croissant to the eggs to the bacon was delicious. Happy they still served breakfast at noon! I also ordered the bee lavendar latte and it was delicious. My husband ordered the curry tuna sandwich which was interesting and worth it if you like curry and tuna! The Windy Saddle is my favorite place for coffee in Golden! They also have delicious bakery items that change daily, so you can always get something different. I especially love the sandwiches and soups. My husband and I have been eating there for years. The location is great-right on Washington by the sign :-) and so cozy! I love the play area for kids in the back. The service at Windy Saddle is always prompt, friendly and you can always get a good recommendation if you're not sure what you want. Like I said, not an avid coffee drinker, but will have a cup with breakfast out to breakfast. I had the light roast and it seemed very bitter ‍. Maybe that's the way it should be. The scone was very good and the my wife enjoyed her sandwich., her late' was disappointing. We ducked in on a busy Saturday for some lunch, and I ordered the Italian Stallion. I posted a photo of it, but it was pretty lackluster, and it was $9.50. The bread was very chewy, it made my jaw sore by the time it was gone. The little bit of meat and veggies it did have on it tasted good, but the sandwich was 75% bread. My daughter enjoyed her grilled cheese, but my husband also felt that his sandwich was sparse for the price. The lemonade should be better for $2.75, it tasted like someone made it using half the recommended amount of Country Time lemonade powder. Stumbled upon this place very hungry and in need of hot yummy warm drinks. My daughter can't eat hot hot spicy food and reviewed the menu closely, ordered the Jerk wrap and after two bites her gums were burning. We had to send it back ( she never sends back anything.) they told us it has habaneros.... No mention of that in the menu description. She got the apple brie sandwich which was yummy in its place but her mouth burned for a long time. My jerk chicken salad was soooooo overly spiced it had no real flavor. I would never come here again to eat food. My mimosa came with essence of OJ, I asked could I please have some OJ in this, it came back to me still with only a splash of OJ. My husband always gets the chorizo and eggs with vegetarian chili and I get the vegetarian burrito with vegetarian chili. Both burritos are delicious! Very cute little cafe in downtown Golden. We were looking for a quick bite after an afternoon of exploring, and this totally hit the spot. I had the Greek salad with hummus, and it was delicious! This place is ok. I enjoy when they have live music. The employees are sometimes not on their game. I've had the hottest beverage of my life here, burning my tongue unable to taste for days. And just the other day I asked if they had any croissants (I didn't see any), was told yes and given my pastry bag to go. Opened it up to find a scone. Scones are not croissants. Mad house. The wait wouldn't be half as long if there were some competence in the kitchen. As I stood there with 2-4 other customers watching as the two "cooks" would throw something in a microwave and stand there and chat with each other undoubtedly about last night's party or this afternoon's hang sesh. There was no multitasking going on aside from those making the drinks... Who, by the way, were busting their butts. When they got to making my sandwich I was disgusted by what I saw. A burnt croissant taken from a toaster and sat and left on a counter for at least two or three minutes before one guy held out a bowl, the other guy sprayed it with oil and dumped eggs in it and then scrambled them with a fork. After which, the first guy threw the bowl in the microwave, nuked them for a minute, slapped them on my croissant and wrapped it. Something like 20-25 minutes for a sandwich I could have easily whipped together in 2 minutes myself. Unfortunately, I'll say... As big a fan I use to be of Windy Saddle Cafe, I doubt I'll return. Most customers waiting for their food were very visually irritated when I walked in and approaching a half hour later and observing of my own, waiting on my poorly made, microwaved $6 breakfast sandwich, I understood why. It seemed the "kids" running the joint would be better off with some adult supervision. There are some massive changes that would need to happen in how the place is ran before I'd reconsider my opinion. Looks like Cafe 13 may have to become the new spot for now. read more

My friend and I stumbled upon this little gem while in the area to do the Coors tour. We decided it would probably be a good idea to eat something before we hit up the beer. Anyhoo, we walked in, and I immediately loved the worn coffee shop vibe of the place. Mismatched tables and chairs, plenty of comfy armchairs and couches, tattered board games, and much-loved books on the walls. Flyers advertising community events like kids' book readings and live local music sessions were everywhere. All in all, my kind of coffee shop. Both my friend and I ordered the Thunderbird sandwich. I'm a sucker for a turkey sandwich with avocado and chipotle mayo. It was very good. I didn't get to try the coffee, but she had a smoothie and it was quite tasty.
