The staff was engaging and very friendly. The food was elevated and delicious. Well prepared and the perfect portion size. My wife and I came here for our anniversary. We chose four items of the small plate menu; crab cakes, bison sliders, Mac and cheese and bacon brussel sprouts. The sliders were terrible, the taste was funky and there was just something not right about their preparation. The crab cakes and mac and cheese were very mediocre. Surely nothing worthy of recommendation. The bacon brussel sprouts were very good and we could recommend them. I also chose a cup of Beef Burguinon which was a special that night. It was very mediocre. My wife also chose a bacon skewer that was on menu. That skewer was very good and I would recommend it. For dessert we had a petite creme brûlée that was a special and it was excellent. We also chose an on menu house made vanilla bean ice cream that was also very average. They have a very nice selection of wines and the merlot we chose that night was very good. Overall the service was good. The atmosphere was very chill and upscale. read more

I will start off saying that the the service and wine was wonderful. This is a great place for small plates and wine. My husband and I were sadly disappointed in our main meals. Arrive hungry, eat, leave hungry, pay lots of money, then go somewhere for a real dinner. We'd been wanting to try out the Wine Cellar for some time, and finally had the opportunity during one of the town's summer nights events. Very nice sitting out on the sidewalk on a summer evening. That, unfortunately, was the highlight of the dining experience. The Wine Cellar has a very nice selection of wines to choose from. The mark-up for their wines is high - on the California side, not consistent with the lower mark-ups at most area restaurants. Both my wife and I ordered the specials for the evening, with my wife ordering the shrimp and scallops, and I opting for the filet. Both of us got the dinner salad with buttermilk herb dressing - very average. When our entrees were served we were shocked. Knowing that the Wine Cellar has a tapas and small plate menu, we thought that perhaps there was a mistake. But no, what we got was the entree. My wife got two shrimp and two scallops with some garnish. They were served cold. The waiter had said nothing about this being a cold dish. My filet, although an inch thick, was about the diameter of a silver dollar. It was served with about a half-dozen green beans. That was it. A glass of wine, a beer, and two small entrees. We left hungry and $80 poorer. The food was not bad, but it was nothing special. If these had been some special gourmet delight, that might have excused the tiny portions, but such was not the case. There are far better places around the corner to eat. We'll never eat here again, but might stop in for a glass of wine. If you're looking for a good dinner, go elsewhere. read more

Amazing dining experience! Should have 5 stars already. First, the food is thoughtfully created and excellently prepared. Service is exceptional. Christine was so friendly and made great recommendations for us from the rack of lamb appetizer to the flourless chocolate dessert. Wine list was not California centric like many other cities and represented many countries and styles which we appreciated. If we are ever in Rapid City again this will be our go to restaurant. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted warmly and immediately felt at home. The crisp and fresh house salad I ate was amazing - sherry vinaigrette subtle and tangy. I also had the scallop gnocchi which was the special- and delicious. They did not have the wine that I ordered but another wine was recommended that I absolutely loved. Just passing through Rapid City and we needed a place to eat good food. We stumbled upon The Wine Cellar Restaurant. This kind of stumbling I could live with every day. The service was beyond superior! The food was superb! Recommend the Butternut Squash Ravioli and The Chef's Filet Special. These were seasonal and weekly specials, but I will definitely come here again. We had last minute reservations and were seated at what looked like a very intimate table. Looks were deceiving, however the server graciously accommodated us and found us another table. Their landlord needs to step up to the plate and make things right for them. read more

Really disappointed this time and won't be back. Food was outrageously priced and we had to get up to get out own drinks since the waiter forgot out wine. At thirty and forty dollars a plate you don't even get bread or a salad and we seemed like an inconvenience to the staff. Plus the food was mediocre at best, nothing special or unique in any way. We had a very nice dinner at the Wine Cellar - the small plate choices were just right for a few in our party with smaller appetites, while I quite enjoyed the seafood special, a San Francisco style cioppino. We enjoyed a bottle of the Adelsheim Pinot Noir, joked a bit with the serving staff and had a nice visit with the owner. Overall, a fun evening with family, great food and terrific wine. Great wine selection, with the ability to try smaller pours of wines as well as regular glasses or bottles. Nice menu selection, which offers appetizers, small plates, and full entrees, ranging from vegetarian to seafood to beef selections. The food was not good enough to compensate for the horrendous service. After arriving there with a table of 6, we were told that we were only able to have 3 menus on the table because there weren't enough to go around in the empty restaurant. We were also told that we had to downsize tables when we told the staff that 2 members of our party couldn't make it after we had already been seated. No one showed up to take our original table. They were slow, pushy and inattentive. Overall, one of the worst service experiences and I don't plan on returning. read more

Good food, but not as good as the prices suggest. If you want to drop a chunk of change on a worthy meal, hit the Corn Exchange. However, that being said, this IS a nice place. I am a big fan of their pizzas. If you want to try something that is not a traditional pizza, but something much more gourmet and european in style, then this is it. Horrible! Where to begin! ... The service was horrible the restaurant is small yet it took a half an hour for anyone to realize we needed refills. Second the bathroom was down a dingy hallway and you had to use a key to access the bathroom at a restaurant where an average meal costs $20... Third the wine was dull and not a very wide selection of wine. Third the food most of all was not worth it at all! I ordered the special which was a amazing sounding 3 cheese ravioli and pesto sauce. It was very dull and the taste was not there at all. Also the portions are very small FYI. What a great find! The service is unbeatable, so friendly, helpful and individualized. The food is super fresh with delicious daily specialties. The small plate tasting menu was a great way to sample their offerings: Cobb salad, mini filet mignon skewers and truffle mushroom ravioli. I only wish I could give negative stars because they don't deserve even the one! This place is a joke!!! I went with a group of people one evening and ordered the $40+ filet. It had to be sent back TWICE and the last time it was brought back it was inedible. Now starts the drama...as if having to wait forever for your meal because it was not cooked properly 3 times was not bad enough and finally not even being able to eat it....the waitress was the WORST I've ever experienced in my life!!! I've lived in 10 different states, traveled extensively and have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the US. NEVER have I EVER experienced anything like her before. To sum up this part she was not just rude. That happens. But she was actually ARGUING with my whole table, especially me because it was my meal. But I wasn't the only one. SHE ALSO CALLED US NAMES! It nearly became physical. I was in COMPLETE SHOCK!!! She was acting so ignorant and disrespectful even with a CHILD at our table. It was like we were getting punked on a TV show because NO ONE in their right mind would act like that especially being on the clock and in customer service. But NO, she said she was quite comfortable acting that way because she was friends with the owner. WOW!!! Really???? She even called the manager (no supervisor or anyone of any authority was even on the premises) and asked her to come in to talk to me. The manager was a joke too because even after we explained everything that happened, it was no big deal to her really. The waitress even continued to STILL call us names and be disrespectful while the manager was there taking to us. Sooo even IF the food was good, you couldn't PAY me to ever set foot at this place again. They think they can treat a large group of paying customers (including children) like sh** and apparently the owner gives their relationships with the staff more of a priority than the customers. I only wish I was over exaggerating this story or lying. It seems so far fetched to have experienced it, but it really did happen! In case you get the fake blonde waitress in her 40s RUN! Unless you're into S&M. But I would actually recommend that you avoid the place altogether because the owner clearly doesn't appreciate anyone's patronage so why give her your hard earned or otherwise money. They don't deserve to be in business. If this is how they treat someone who has to pay $40+ dollars for a meal, I can get better treatment at McDonalds for a lot cheaper!
