So good we went twice! This is a can't miss stop if you are celiac, they have a dedicated fryer and the food is superb for a bar. Between the two days we had salad, burgers, chicken (not gf)baked potato, garlic parm fries-all perfect! Note that this is a hometown place and a little off the main area but find it and make sure you get there at least once during your trip!

We enjoyed the special of the day- fish tacos- you get two in a meal and while they may look simple and boring they had great flavor. The walleye was fried crispy and tasted fresh and mild. They had great crispy fries and an awesome appetizer platter. For the app combo you get 3 choices and we did the fried pickles, mushrooms and jalapeño poppers- all delish!!! The poppers had more of a pimento cheese vs the traditional cream cheese and were great in their own way. The crisp on all apps did not disappoint which is great bc pickles and shrooms can tend to get soggy and watery. Give this place a try if you're in town. Staff was also friendly and it was nice and cool inside on a 90F day!

Tried this place out for lunch- wings were good (nothing out of the ordinary), taco soup which was super good but definitely on the heartier side, breaded mushrooms, and for my entree I chose the chicken salad croissant with sweet pot fries. I'm no rookie to chicken salad croissants so I shouldn't have expected much, but it was an okay chicken salad at best. The chicken was super shredded which I'm not that big of a fan of, and the Mayo base was VERY sweet. Overall, a good place to stop by if you're not in the mood for anything specific. Service was a bit slow but everyone was very nice.

DISCLAIMER: i got the salad to be healthy on the road, and i guess in retrospect that was unwise? Regardless, this review is specifically for the salad I got the Shipwreck Salad with "Grilled Beef" (see photo because i don't need to describe it). correct me if i'm wrong, but when i ordered a salad with grilled beef, i expected to open my container to slices of beef grilled on a stove laid out on healthy salad. nope. it was just grease, crunchy ground beef, and lettuce. they did not drain or skim excess fat so the "bed of lettuce" was drenched with ground beef GREASE. people and service were nice but the food felt like it was false advertisement because grilled beef is not ground beef. this is the first time i've eaten somewhere and thought "this place is not consumable for humans". if this is still on your menu, please correct your menu to reflect the actual product that people are ordering.

** Uodate: we enjoyed this place so much that we went back the next day. They forgot the bacon on two of our shipwreck burgers and one of the employees was walking around swatting flies on the tables, one table right next to me. I could've counted the holes in the swatter he was so close. The food was still good, but the missing bacon was a disappointment and the fly swatting was disturbing and gross. Staff was friendly & polite. --------------------------------------------------- We found this place on Yelp and then found a coupon on Restaurant.com, so we decided to give it a try it. I'm sorry, I should've taken pictures beforehand, but forgot to. My daughter got the shrimp dinner and absolutely loved it and said it was amazing. She is a very picky eater. My other daughter got the bacon cheeseburger l, who never finishes her food, wanted to keep eating it. She even left 1/3 of her $32 steak at The Game Lodge, the night before. My husband and I both got the Shipwreck Burger. We substituted green peppers with jalapeños in the sautéed onions and peppers. The burger was HUGE! They were a hefty 1/2 pound, juicy and well cooked. We've had several burgers on our vacation and this was by far THE BEST ever. The picture of the poppers was after they were half eaten and the same with the burger. Trust me, it was all awesome! Everything was reasonably priced and family friendly. The service was excellent. We will definitely be back before we leave the area.

Stumbled on to this gem of Custer nearly two years ago when moving from Michigan to Arizona. I…read morewanted to see the Black Hills and do all the things so I included Custer on my itinerary. Absolutely loved Skogen! We are on a road trip back to Michigan with a weekend stop in Deadwood and decided to add a stop in Custer this time around as well and, gratefully and thankfully, we were able to secure a reservation. Again, Skogen was AMAZING! We sat in the outside patio area which was cozy and comfortable. Because I have acclimated to 115 degrees in Arizona summers, the 79 degree temperature was a bit chilly so I grabbed a super warm blanket that was supplied and they offered to turn on the heaters. I know it sounds ridiculous to most people who travel to South Dakota. Honestly, Arizona ruins you for everywhere hahahhah. Anyway, I thought it was super kind for them to make me comfortable! It was greatly appreciated! Service: Our server, Curtis, was fantastic! He catered to our every whim! He was personable and friendly and we had a very nice conversation. He helped me decide the best entree between two of my choices and it sure didn't disappoint! Excellent service! Food: The hubby and I shared the lobster steam buns were phenomenal. I mean, if you're reading this and you're going to Skogen, don't hesitate. Just order them. I wasn't a fan of Hollandaise prior to trying theirs, so I asked for it on the side. I literally could have licked the Hollandaise sauce. It was light, airy and absolutely scrumptious! The lobster was delicious and delicate and perfect! We both said we could have eaten the entire four buns by ourselves--and not shared! They were incredible! I had the halibut with asparagus and fingerling potatoes. It was absolutely delicious! The hubby had the duck confit. The white bean preparation with the smoked bacon was amazing but the duck---what magic have you created? It was tender with crispy skin and so moist! Dessert was shared and consisted of the chocolate cheesecake with pistachio ice cream. Unbelievable! So delicious! We had the honor of meeting the owner, Joseph, and shared a wonderful conversation with him. We loved his passion and enthusiasm for his craft, his love of people and we never felt like he was rushing to get back to doing what he needed to do. We truly felt like we were guests at his own home dinner table, sharing stories. It was really a lovely experience from start to finish. We just loved Skogen and look forward to coming back any and every time we manage to swing back into this wonderful town. We have really fallen in love with Custer!

This restaurant was one I found during a trip to Rapid City, SD and through YELP, so shout out to…read moreYELP. This is very much a diner style restaurant in the very best sense of the word, "DINER." The night I dined here, it was somewhat after the usual dinner rush, so the crowds were gone and the hostess led me to a corner booth near the back of the restaurant and handed me a menu. Like many diners you may have eaten at, the menu at COLONIAL HOUSE is huge. As I get older, huge menus are becoming more intimidating because they offer a large volume of selections that you have to choose from while a server is waiting (sometimes not all that patiently). That having been said, there is enough variety on the menu here that if you can't find something you'd like, you are probably a very picky eater. One surprise and also an intimidating one was the humongous portions that are delivered when your plate arrives. I knew immediately that I would not be able to finish the meal and resolved not to try and ask for a take-out box once I ate what I could finish. My dinner (what I managed to eat was excellent) and the server had no problem providing me with a take-out box. The food kept well in my hotel's room fridge and reheated well the next day for lunch. The baked products at COLONIAL HOUSE were a feast for the eyes and I ordered a piece of strawberry shortcake to take with me back to my hotel. Mouthwatering delight! If you are visiting Rapid City and want to completely SKIP over the far too numerous chain restaurants in the area and get far better food brought to you by servers who actually seem to like their jobs and the reputation of their employer, look no further than COLONIAL HOUSE. Just make sure you come with a completely empty stomach and a big appetite.
