The first night I went to this restaurant with my co-worker, the experience was good. Our server was very nice, very attentive and gave us great recommendations. We tend to work late, so we came in around 9:30, but they were more than happy to serve us. The food was delicious, though the portions *were* a tad small. Fine with me, I don't eat much...but I could see some people getting a little irked at that considering the plate price. After recommending the place to some other co-workers, six of us decided to eat there the following night. Again, we approached the restaurant around 9:40 or so. Our same server was outside and told us seating us shouldn't be a problem - BUT, as we entered the restaurant, another hostess had gone back and checked with the kitchen for a co-worker who arrived before us and said the "grill had been turned off for awhile" and they couldn't help us. I realize it can be a pain when 6 people walk in 20 minutes before you're supposed to stop serving, but why even have a dinner service scheduled until 10 if you're not going to hold to it? We ended up walking around the corner to another place and they were not only happy to serve us, they were eager to serve us. We ordered a lot, had a great meal and left a *huge* tip. Currently, I'm sitting in my hotel room waiting for someone who is eating at Wine Cellar so we can go grab some drinks. It's 8:15, their reservation was at 6:30 and they're just now getting appetizers.... Food is great. The service is lacking. read more

I went here a few years ago for a full dinner. I've been back since then, BUT, not to eat, just to drink. The reason? I had the special which was white lasagna, and it was DRY. Since I make this dish a lot and know what goes into it, I DO know you have to be careful not to bake it too long and watch your liquids. Unlike a traditional red lasagna which has the water of the tomato sauce to keep it juicy, white lasagna with the Bechamel sauce can easily dry out. My friend, who was buying for four of us, paid for all our specials which were not cheap (I'm sure it was around $100 or so with wine). I never said anything, because I didn't want to hurt her feelings for having picked out the place. HOWEVER, it's in a lovely location, across from some neat places, the Elks Theatre, Prairie Edge Gallery to name a few. And with its big glass windows, it's nice to get a window seat and people watch. The lighting is lovely as is the atmosphere. I went there last spring and tried their cheese tapas (a cheese pizza, basically, only with upscale cheese). When I got two glasses of wine, the price was rather staggering (considering I was still hungry, maybe $35 with a tip, steep for Rapid City). But it was OK tasting, so I shrugged it off. Then a few months later, I stumbled upon Bottecelli's down the street and their version of the same cheese upscale pizza. It was only $10. Hello. Well, "fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice, shame on me." Again, I'd have drinks here and just chat, but don't bother eating here when you have Tally's on the same block as well as Bottecelli's I wish I could give it four stars, because the owner is very nice. read more

The Wine Cellar is a very classy and elegant restaurant with fabulous service, divine food, and amazing wine selection. There is not a place like it in Rapid City. This is the type of place you go to with your friends, and enjoy their company, relax with a glass of wine, and enjoy the dinner. It takes some time but that is the point, if you want something quick Hardee's is right down the street. I would recommend this place to everyone! You won't be disappointed! read more

Worst ever service. Waited 1 hour for just a dinner salad! Blamed problem on small kitchen but shouldn't kitchen be of size to accommodate the size of the restaurant? Don't go here. Fantastic wine bar. You can tell by the vibe and the staff this is a different experience. This is family owned and you can experience the care taken in the food, wine, and better yet the staff which is hard to find in Rapid City. After being in Napa Valley for a week I didn't lose a step. Husband and I had dinner here last night. We chose the Wine Cellar based on reviews. I ordered crab cakes( was told they were lump crab meat) for $18.95 and a small salad. Husband ordered their special which was trout with pasta. My salad was pretty mundane with lettuce ,couple of cuke slices and some tomato. VERY overpriced were the 2 small crab cakes that were basically bread crumbs with flavoring......I did not find a piece of crab nor the flavor of crab. They were served on a bed of unedible greens. Husbands dish was a small piece of fish with pasta for $28.00. The waitress brought us complementary stale bread slices and special butter. Needless to say, We would not eat here again read more

We came here for our 33rd anniversary. We were in town visiting the local attractions. The other yelp reviews looked promising but we found it a bit disappointing. My wine was terrific but the food was quite mediocre. The crab cakes were bland and a bit fishy. The scallops were "okay" but the champagne risotto was really bland and flavorless. The special side of asparagus for 10.75 was cold. My husband has the poule en croute. He said it was fine but looked dry The server was very nice but the kitchen was really slow and it wasn't very busy and it seemed like the management seemed most interested in socializing and drinking wine with some of the other customers. read more

We have dined here the last two nights as visitors to Rapid City. The food is to die for!! We have tried the champagne risotto, the poulet en croute, the filet, their vanilla bean ice cream with olive oil and sea salt. We also had the bacon skewers with chocolate and caramel sauces which were awesome. We met a lovely local couple who love their pizzas made from semolina and honey. The Wine Cellar Restaurant is the best place in all of Rapid City- for so many reasons. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have the best experience. Christy is THE BEST. She had the greatest recommendations and really made my experience awesome. The menu is very extensive and all encompassing, reminds me of something you'd get at a 5 star NYC restaurant. My wife and I had an excellent dinner at the Wine Cellar. Our server, Chantel, was very efficient and friendly. She explained that the kitchen was behind because of a large group. We were not in a hurry, so we enjoyed the leisurely dinner. We tried the chicken puffed pastry and the chef's daily pasta feature and both were very good. We had came and was ignored. A friend went to get the waitress attention and was told we couldn't be waited on because it was full!!! We were the only ones there!!! We walked to Oneils and still noticed no one at this place 45 mins later. A local business owner who is from rapid had told us this place is notorious for not servicing people of color, and heard also they certainly try not serve native americans. The group I was with was a group of Pacific Islanders and two African Americans (We all military), so I imagine it explains why service was denied to us. Don't recommend this place. read more

If I had one wish during my stay in Rapid City, it would be that I wish I'd never eaten at Wine Cellar. I was there in the middle of winter, and the zipper broke on my jacket. That's how much I regret eating at Wine Cellar, my ZIPPER broke on my JACKET in the WINTER, and STILL if I had one wish... it wouldn't be, "I wish my zipper didn't break." Why? Bait and switch! (Ugh, it still makes me so mad...) I ordered a $26 dollar bottle of wine and that horrible person of a server poured me a $36 bottle of wine, and I may have not even known except (since it took a solid hour or so to get the APPETIZERS) I ordered a 2nd bottle of wine. Now, I already know at this point that I'M the sucker because the horrible person of a server SHOWED me the bottle and I okayed it. I worked in food service for 15 years- its a common scam, but I let my guard down because who expects to be robbed in SOUTH DAKOTA? Honest mistake? Maybe. Here's a word: Snoqualmie. I've never had wine from this vineyard, but I like the area it's named after, and it seems unlikely that a server would forget this word between my table of 10 and the wine cellar in Wine Cellar. When I ordered the 2nd bottle...tee hee- that's not Snoqualmie, was the response. Hmmm, what else... The very cute and very appealing looking eatery seats, maybe 30 in the front area. My friends (who are still mad at me for taking them here, BTW) and I took up the majority of the tables, and there were maybe 3 other parties of 2-4 the whole time we were there, but SOMEHOW dinner still takes (no exaggeration) 3 hours+. NEVER at any point did this seem to strike horrible server person as odd, for she never even hinted at being apologetic at any stage, nor did she seem uncomfortable... unreal. When I got my fancy squash ravioli it looked and smelled absolutely divine, albeit no more than a cup and a half of actual food, but it was lukewarm and served on a room temperature plate. Boo. There were far too many red flags from beginning to end to chalk this up to just a bad experience. I see some other people liked it, but I would say take your hard earned money and spend it elsewhere, OR, go eat there and end up wishing you never had, please promise you'll Yelp it. read more

We had dinner after checking out Yelp reviews. My wife had the bacon scallops and the duck sausage appetizers and thought both were great. I had the aromatic duck fat roasted pork - excellent. We shared a bread pudding which was outstanding. Our waitress recommended two wines Total bill without tip or taxes was a little over $100. The food tasted alright. If only there was more of it. The portions are fit a king's chiuaua. The price however is for a king. If that doesn't bother you perhaps the fact that it took me and several of my friends three hours to have dinner should. It would have been great if the server would have apologized for our obvious long wait, but instead she said nothing of it, as if this was normal. i have never had a bad meal in the three times I have been here while visiting from out of town, the Service is very nice and they serve a great selection of Wines. Their food can be shared with friends or you can pick your own Entree or App, but I think you will be satisfied with their wide range of menu, not to mention great Salads and Cheeses paired with your wines. I could even go with five stars, maybe will revise my rating after I think about it, though lack of a fruit-based dessert is a minus. My wife and I recently went to the Wine Cellar during our stay in Rapid City. The service we had was horrible. After ordering, it took 30 minutes for the waitress to bring bread. The salad followed 20 minutes later. Our meal arrived a full hour after we ordered. The food was good. My wife had the pork and it was excellent. My lasagna was average. The Wine Cellar is where we (secretly) spent our 1st wedding anniversary, our waitress was wonderful, knowledgeable, and very helpful. The food was delicious, filling, and well made. And to top it off, the local entertainment viewing from outside the bay windows was priceless! Very overpriced and extremely bland. Scewer comes out on a plate by its lonely self, approximately 3 small pieces of beef, no lettuce, no parsley, nada. Cobb salad had the weirdest dressing, and not much of it. Chick peas were either not cooked or just plain hard and tasteless.
