On a whim I wanted cake today. So I came in here for some Vanilla Tres Leches and OMG cheesecake. The selection of cakes were spectacular. Woahhhh... Two slices of cake and a water was $25! That's a steep price for cake but the slices they give you are pretty large, definitely a splurge for the wallet. I am disappointed that they didn't have WiFi that reached to the "front" of the building. The staff said I would have to sit near the back and the name for the WiFi was weird and they weren't sure if the WiFi even worked! So I used my hot spot. It doesn't seem like the staff cleans regularly in the front. There was ice cream drops on the floor and plastic wrappers on the tables and ground. We had to wipe off our table and as you can see ice cream under our table. Gross! The OMG Cheesecake was very potent and strong chocolate peanut butter smell. The chocolate crust was very thick, filling and delicious. The Tres Leches comes in vanilla and chocolate. I got the vanilla, the texture was good but it could have been a tad bit more moist. Clearly by the photos there cake presentation is amazing and they provide individual wrapped utensils and boxes for each slice of cake. Staff is really friendly and nice. Next time if I'm in the mood for cake I'd get it to go! The dining area was empty and not very clean. PS: they used to offer 1/2 off dipped fruit after 8pm but stopped because of covid. My girlfriend and I had been wanting to try this place for months so on our most recent Houston trip, we finally got some time to go and check this place out and it definitely was worth the trip! Before I start my review I would like to state, this place is pricey but it's not pricey for what you get. Chocolate is very expensive to work with especially when you're not using cheap chocolate like Hershey so if you go here, know you are going to be paying a pretty penny but if you want good chocolate, that's the price you pay for good authentic chocolate. If it's too much for you or you don't agree with their prices, go buy a Hershey bar. Now onto their products! The best thing we got was definitely the chocolate covered strawberries. Normally places sell the small strawberries but not here...these were BIG BOYS! We got 3 and we were way more than satisfied! We got my mom some toffee for Christmas from here as well and she said it's some of the best toffee she's ever had. We also got some of their ice cream which we ate there! I'm not particularly fond of this location over the Alabama one, I believe the Alabama location is so much better, however a friend of mines had never visited the Rice Village location and wanted to see the difference. One of the huge disappointment that I experienced here was that they don't have a wide variety of cakes to order. Not all of the cakes were available and the taste was rich, but not as moist as I would have liked. Heck, I am paying $9 for a slice, it better be top notch. Also, they don't have many cakes with nuts nor do they have lava cakes which in my opinion would be the spotlight of this restaurant. I ended up getting the Any day's a holiday - it was OK, the vanilla cake wasn't as moist as the chocolate cake. It had a bit of dryness to it. What made the cake rich was the icing (frosting), but the bread parts wasn't what I was expecting to taste. My friend couldn't decide whether he wanted the black Russian or the tiramisu, so he just chose the tiramisu. It wasn't good. Very light taste, mostly chocolate over coffee. It wasn't worth $6 a slice, the slices were tiny-Tim. Also, I'm guessing this location is the first and the reason why I make this assumption is because the booths are old. They are unattached and wobble when you sit in them. This location may be big, but it feels really quaint because there's a lot of people just standing around in the way. The staff is meh, not as rambunctious and bubbly as the Alabama location. They are friendly, but you as a customer have to make an effort to get them to talk to you. The plastic bottles of cow's milk is $2, and non-dairy milk alternatives are no where to be found. The chocolate bar takes you back to those days of the malt shop. How I wish I was around for those days. Maybe a sock hop. Ok, I'm getting ahead of myself, but anyway... The chocolate bar is just that; it's a chocolate shop that makes its own chocolate and desserts. You can have a sit down dessert there or take one to go. During my trip though I loaded up on their vintage candy or candies I've never had before like watermelon gummy bears and Dr Pepper licorice. Both were epic and reasonably priced. That being said, I am kind of mad I missed out on a milkshake, but I guess that's why I'll be coming back to the Chocolate Bar on my next trip to Houston. This is definitely a fun place for kids of all ages. A great place for dates. Just generally a fun place to be and look around. I'm sure you'll find something to satisfy that sweet tooth. This is probably the saddest review I've ever written. As you can see from my old review five years ago, I was probably The Chocolate Bar's biggest fan and LOVED their ice cream. Seriously, I used to go there about once a week and even had it Favored to me multiple times if I was working late. BUT, since new owners/management changed a year or two ago, things just aren't the same. The ice cream quality isn't quite up to par, and the massive overload of candy, chocolate, cookie dough, nuts, etc. in the ice cream ceases to exist. It's still ice cream, and it's OK, but just nothing compared to what it used to be. The cake is OK too, but just OK isn't enough for that kind of price. Again, I really hate writing this review, but, after many return trips to the spot while under new management, The Chocolate Bar doesn't live up to 5 stars anymore, in my opinion. read more

When we would take trips into Houston, we would make a Chocolate Bar stop nearly every trip be it in Rice or on Alabama. Today was the first time seeing the rice village location half the size. Where were the cakes? Where was the ice cream? And more importantly, where was the chocolate? Being disappointed by the display of chocolate, I succumbed to a piece of red velvet and an americano. Located in the heart of Rice Village, there are complimentary two-hour parking garages within walking distance. The Chocolate bar, if you couldn't tell, has everything chocolate your heart desires. You order at the counter and there's plenty of seating at this spacious dessert spot. I will say that I'm not a huge sweets guy but I dabble. They have ice cream, truffles, cakes, etc. I went with one of their signature items, the chocolate tres leches. It was a generous portion but pretty expensive for a dessert. At a more reasonable price point, The Chocolate Bar would be a little higher in my book. Price aside, the tres leches was good. I'm a big fan of tres leches and I had never had a chocolate version. Shortly after moving to Houston three years ago, my husband and I stumbled upon the Chocolate Bar and by God's grace ordered a slice of Uncle Darryl's chocolate cake. Wow. I still remember how blown away we were by the decadence and richness of the chocolate balanced by the salty sweet toffee pieces and caramel sauce. 1 slice of this cake will set you back $11, but the slice is ENORMOUS and can't be consumed in one sitting unless you have two stomachs or some friends to help. Celebrating with my family my youngest son who is off to the Air Force. This place is huge and a Dentist wildest dream for his clientele. What do you want... it's here and some. I'm not a coffee drinker but I am going to try the Mexican Hot Chocolate Latte. This is awesome there is just the right cinnamon and whipped cream to make you forget that it's coffee. I think I am going to order me another one. My favorite ice cream here is the Candylicious Junkyard- it has Twix , Baby Ruth, Milky Way, Butterfinger, Kit Kay, Snikers, Nestle Crunch all crunched up in White chocolate ice cream. -OH YEAH!!! The people here are so friendly and they want you to sample every thing. I would pick up 5pounds sampling all of this ice cream. Why haven't I gone here sooner?! My lil bro loves chocolate, and he asked me to pick up some chocolate cake here after work to bring home. I've honestly driven past The Chocolate Bar several times and always had the thought to try them out one day. Well, this was the day. Walking into this place, I literally saw chocolate everything: candies, cookies, brownie bars, chocolate covered fruits, and cakes. They even had non-chocolate items, such as ice cream, Lavazza coffee, milk, pies, cheesecake, tiramisu, and other types of cakes (strawberry, carrot, tres leches, and wedding cake). The decor and the desserts reminded me of Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory. The only thing that kind of dampened my experience was the noticeable smell of dirty dishrags. This didn't sit well with me when all I wanted to smell was the wonderful aroma of chocolate and baked goods. I think they just need to change out their rags and this should be fixed. On to the food! On this visit, we ordered their most popular chocolate cake slices to go - the Uncle Darryl and Aunt Etta. I can't lie. They're pretty expensive at about $10 per slice. But, the cake slices were huge and could easily feed about 5 people or more because of how decadent they were. Of the two cakes, I did prefer the Aunt Etta. It's an aromatic, moist chocolate cake with creamy chocolate icing. Just chocolate upon chocolate flavor. I would recommend this cake for the chocolate purist. The Uncle Darryl was good too. The actual cake was only mildly chocolatey, but still moist enough. It's the surrounding chocolate icing with chocolate chips and toffee bits mixed in that made this cake fun to eat. When biting into the toffee bits, I loved the aroma of caramel as the finishing flavor. I can see why the cake had to be slightly milder to balance out the icing and chocolate/toffee bits. However, I do think the Uncle Darryl was a sweeter cake compared to the Aunt Etta, which was already sweet in and of itself. Either way, these two cakes were pretty solid choices. I do wish they had smaller cake servings (or maybe even cupcake versions of the larger cake slices) so that I can sample other types of cakes prior to purchasing such a huge slice of cake. Next time, I may want to try out their chocolate covered fruits (which are half off after 8 pm!) and espresso drinks. I hope to be able to dine in by then when the smell in here gets better. read more

Let me start by saying that the chocolate is great!! Unfortunately, it is grossly overpriced for what you get. I only gave 2 stars because of this. I went in to get souvenirs for friends. I was shocked by the prices. I can respect the nuances of juggling affordability with running a small business. However, the prices were too high. Anyone who has ever gone to a cake decorating store knows that they can get great candy making chocolate, similar to whatever is used at this location, for a fraction of the price and DIY some pretzel sticks, strawberries, Oreos, etc. One thing that I didn't try that might set The Chocolate Bar apart is their ice cream. I dropped in here one night a few years ago and loved the vintage feel this place had. My husband and I recently had lunch in Rice Village, and he mentioned wanting something sweet. I thought of this place and told him about it. Thirty seconds later, we were inside, debating on which ice cream flavor to get. We loved the decor and several options for flavors and treats they had. I also noticed they had chocolate cake toppers (available in milk or white chocolate), which would be an elegant addition to a wedding cake. Chocolate Bar has long been a favorite of mine. Then came the parking meters in Rice Village everywhere.. Yes there was still a garage, but it became a bigger hassle and just unwelcoming. Then last year the management changed and now there is no more homemade ice cream! The creative delicious twists on different chocolate ice cream flavors were legendary... And now instead we get the generic flavors from Ashby ice cream. Very few of the flavors are even chocolate at a store called The Chocolate Bar. The candy store on the side is also gone leaving a hole of what was once kid's heaven. The chocolate section remains intact.. But while they make great gifts and look great, I never really cared for the taste. Still a cute store I suppose for visitors to peruse chocolate pizzas and other chocolate moldings, but a very hollow shell of what it used to be. What I have to say that I love about the Chocolate Bar are the options that they have in desserts as well as the size. The amount of cake that one person can get for about $8 is insane! There are pieces there that I am for certain are bigger than the size of my own head. My go to piece is the Tres Leches (I have also had an assortment of cakes as well pieces of their chocolate covered fruit). The Tres Leches is considered one of Chocolate Bar's classics and it is a delicious chocolate adaptation of your average Tres Leches! It never fails to satisfy my chocolate craving. I find that the Chocolate Bar has quality desserts, so I recommend anyone to stop on by. Came here after dinner to get some dessert. My girlfriend and I were eyeing the cakes to share, but we decided to get ice cream for each of us. I ended up getting a scoop of mint chocolate (I forgot the exact name of the flavor) on a regular cone. I will say, this ice cream was pretty good--it had more chocolate than most other versions, which is great because I love chocolate flavored ice creams. I came to the Chocolate Bar in a group of ~20 people for dessert after a heavy meal on a Saturday night, and I was instantly impressed with the variety of desserts that they have on display, from gigantic cakes to ice cream to macarons. I got a two-scoop ice cream (vanilla and mint chocolate chip) in a cup, grabbed a seat at a booth, and had a good time socializing and satisfying my sweet tooth. The ice cream was delicious (as all ice cream is). I thought the interior and cleanliness could be improved. The bathroom was not very clean. Also, the walls had traces of things that were once hung up on them, like metal hangers that weren't being used and marks from something being ripped off the wall. I'm going to keep it a stack. If you go here and you want chocolate cake of any kind you are making the right decision. I had a bit of a sweet tooth so I decided to find someplace different to grab a snack. I decide to stop by the chocolate bar and I knew it was going to be good because you walk in and it smells like straight chocolate in the bakery. I decided to go with two slices of cake. I grabbed one slice of the chocolate Bar's signature Auntie Etta cake and one of my go-to desserts Red Velvet Cake. I will let you know it took me three days to eat the cake because the pieces are so big. The auntie Etta slice was incredible. With the amount of chocolate that is on that cake (chocolate cake with chocolate icing) you would think it would be sweet but the dark chocolate they use makes for the perfect amount of sweetness and the moist rich cake makes the slice sinfully delicious. Red velvet gets five stars as well. The cake was equally rich and moist and the cream cheese icing was awesome. It was a little sweeter than the chocolate cake which was a little jarring at first but I still enjoyed it. First of all, I LOVE their little saying "Where every hour is happy hour"... well, hell, consider me Amy Winehouse! After dinner a couple of doors down at Fu's Garden, my friends and I decided to walk off that delicious dinner and wander around the area. It's been awhile since I'd been to the University area so coming across The Chocolate Bar was a nice surprise. Oooooweeee!! Chocolate cell-o-phones, chocolate bunnies, chocolate cakes, chocolate bars, chocolate baby bottles, chocolate chocolate and more chocolate. I about went ballistic... the chocolate lover in me shed tears of joy. Ok, so maybe it wasn't that freakin serious but what a cool concept. You can even create your own chocolate bars and chocolate pizza. There's ice cream, cookies and plenty of seating to enjoy your chocolate concoction. We split a huge slice of the "Night and Day" cake and even between four people still couldn't finish it. We also picked up a couple of German Chocolate cookies to nibble on at a later time. They have a wide range of chocolate covered fruits (1/2 price at the end of the day) as well as assorted candies and ice cream. The ice cream is good but you have to buy at least two scoops. We came in one day for ice cream and realized they also had some cake options. We then got some ice cream and the tres leches. The ice cream is very good but I want to talk about the tres leches - IT IS SO GOOD! The chocolate one is even better than the traditional one. I definitely like this location better than the original. It's huge! There is also a lot more parking. Overall, just a better deal! This location is prime, right in West U/Rice Village. The purple awning helps you find it quickly. It's well lit and you can move around. At the other location, it's often packed and you have to squeeze past people at prime times. We came here for a late night snack after viewing the lovely Lois, the corpse flower, at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. We got there around 11:15 and enjoyed some treats until closing at midnight. I got the Tollhouse Cookie Pie. I enjoyed it, but it was a little too gooey. I've had it at the other location and it was more cooked and firm. This time it was a little too raw. My husband enjoyed his coffee. I really liked the amount of seating and the open nature of this location. I will definitely be back, as I love chocolate and they certainly have that area covered!! read more
