We finally found an assisted living place for our Mom. The admissions person was wonderful and…read moreexplained the levels of care and gave us a tour of several rooms. The great thing is if Mom needs more or less care, she does not have to move! The staff just conforms to her needs, so her room is her room. She has resided at Smithfield Woods for over a year, and we are very happy with the care she is receiving. The place is more than clean- it looks like a hotel or condo and has modern rooms with spacious bathrooms/walk in showers, kitchenettes, A/C, beautiful windows/views, several dining rooms and common areas/reading areas, activities daily, and a full dining room for 3 meals a day. For an extra fee, they have a med tech who will give our Mom her meds (she has too many to keep track of herself). They always have one or more RN's on staff, a maintenance person if you need help putting up a picture, and activity staff who check on the residents frequently during the day to encourage socialization. They have cleaning service who keep our Mom's room neat and clutter-free since she uses a walker/wheelchair. The office is always open during the day if you have a question. Now I am particular about floors/smells, and being a nurse myself, I appreciate the cleanliness and fresh-smelling air of the hallway and common areas. The aides are so friendly and let me say- we all know how understaffed this whole state is when it comes to nursing facilities! The aides go above and beyond for their residents here. Our Mom is safe here and that is the most important! I tell many friends and family about Smithfield Woods for their elderly loved ones. Hopefully many more people will go take a tour and see how nice it is here!

We transferred my dad from another assisted living to St. Elizabeth's a little over a month ago. Every time I come here, the staff is always smiling & friendly, the place is clean, & my dad looks well cared for. Administration is very helpful as well & very prompt handling any concerns. My dad likes the food too, which is great! He barely ate at the last place because the food was terrible. The building is in the old side. Seems to be a bit of delay transitioning from heat to AC when the weather warms up, but I'm told this is common for most facilities. It's been maintained well, but the windows definitely need to be replaced. Besides that, my dad's only complaint so far is the room size, but he opted for the smaller room & it IS bigger that the room he had at the other place; larger ones are available. The have a lot of places for family to gather. They also have 2 kitchens the residents can use to cook/entertain, a small gym-like room, a chapel, snack area, 2 sunrooms, a salon, & lots of TVs if residents want to get out of their rooms. And other rooms that I know I'm forgetting. Very happy so far.

As far as housekeeping every time I am here someone is cleaning something. The place is immaculate. It's as beautiful as a hotel with an old country feel. I've been told by residents that reside here that the food is fantastic, and I would have to say they're right. If you come here around any mealtimes you will be greeted by tempting aromas. They're always doing something to keep they're residents engaged. There's always activities, outings, and people coming to perform. They even have someone bring baby goats. But the most important thing is people are happy here and they feel safe.

I rate it at five stars for the beauty of the property, the cheerfulness, competence, and engagement of the staff, the food quality and options, the variety of activities, and the pristine upkeep. My father's apartment is one that I would cheerfully live in today. But the most important thing is that my father is content and enjoys his life there. When he gets confused, he'll often tell me "but there's this lovely room that a nice person just showed me that I can stay in!". It means everything to me that he feels safe, even when he can't remember or process as well as he used to. I'm sure that there's no "one size fits all", but I would definitely encourage reaching out to them if you are considering memory care for a loved one!

The administration had promised her a new apartment in their new Terrace Early Stage Memory Care unit since February, 2021. After the open house was held in June 2021 for this new unit, we were notified in July my stepmom was not going to the new Terrace she was being offered a room in the locked Alzheimer's Unit for an additional $2,000.00. This has been done without an Alzheimer's diagnosis and if she doesn't take this room she is out. Based on my, and the rest of my family's interactions with my stepmom, it is clear she is not in need of the care that the other residents of this unit require. It appears this facility has contracted with many outside customers for this new unit and in all likelihood for more rent than my stepmom was going to pay as a current resident. She loves living at Wingate and now is forced by circumstances to leave. If you are looking for an assisted living for your loved one skip this facility.

One of the things she appreciated most was how intellectually and socially engaging life at Laurelmead is. I have heard and read wonderful things about Hallworth House, and my only thought is "Are we…read moretalking about the same place?" My mother needed rehab after a hospital stay. She left the hospital using an oxygen tank, which Hallworth knew, but was not set up to accommodate when my mother arrived. They were able to get one to her room pretty quickly, however they were not set up to provide physical therapy to her while she was connected to oxygen. Had we known this, we'd never have let the hospital release her to Hallworth. Of course attempts at getting her up and moving were pretty fruitless. They wrote on her chart that she was short of breath and had to return to bed; well yes ... you took her off her oxygen under physically challenging conditions! Eventually Hallworth sent her back to the hospital for the shortness of breath caused by removing the oxygen while walking. And that was that. She was readmitted and we were basically at square one. Older folks decondition pretty quickly. I have a theory: I think the glowing reviews of Hallworth are from people whose family-members are either suffering from dementia, or (sorry to say) just not going to get better. Maybe caring for those patients and treating their families with kindness are Hallworth's core competencies. If you are looking for a facility for a family member in this situation, Hallworth may be a fine choice, and I will say the night nurse at the desk was wonderful. But they really did not seem to know what to do with a sharp mind, in the head of a person who could expect to get better and live independently after some effective PT. My anecdotal information is that the staff behaves as if no one is watching or listening when alone with a patient, until that patient surprises them with lucid conversation. My mother was a challenge for them, and someone there figured out a way to get her out of their hair. If you're choosing rehab or nursing care as an advocate for a family member, I empathize. It's not easy. For what it's worth, my mother did eventually regain her independence after receiving PT while attached to oxygen. She no longer needs oxygen, and has resumed a busy life.
