You can spend days and weeks looking for the right place for an elderly friend or relative, but once you look at Tockwotton, the choice is obvious. Challenging perhaps on pricing depending on one's means, but it's worth it to me to place my mom in an environment that makes her WANT to live (and eat and engage) and not have her in a 'cost-effective' facility the makes her NOT want to live. And Michael and Monica have been outstanding. We are just starting the process and are hoping it all works out. But bottom line is, if she ends up somewhere else, Tockwotton was our first (and really only) choice. Anything else will be second and not what we hoped for. Tim

The administration had promised her a new apartment in their new Terrace Early Stage Memory Care unit since February, 2021. After the open house was held in June 2021 for this new unit, we were notified in July my stepmom was not going to the new Terrace she was being offered a room in the locked Alzheimer's Unit for an additional $2,000.00. This has been done without an Alzheimer's diagnosis and if she doesn't take this room she is out. Based on my, and the rest of my family's interactions with my stepmom, it is clear she is not in need of the care that the other residents of this unit require. It appears this facility has contracted with many outside customers for this new unit and in all likelihood for more rent than my stepmom was going to pay as a current resident. She loves living at Wingate and now is forced by circumstances to leave. If you are looking for an assisted living for your loved one skip this facility.

I have heard and read wonderful things about Hallworth House, and my only thought is "Are we…read moretalking about the same place?" My mother needed rehab after a hospital stay. She left the hospital using an oxygen tank, which Hallworth knew, but was not set up to accommodate when my mother arrived. They were able to get one to her room pretty quickly, however they were not set up to provide physical therapy to her while she was connected to oxygen. Had we known this, we'd never have let the hospital release her to Hallworth. Of course attempts at getting her up and moving were pretty fruitless. They wrote on her chart that she was short of breath and had to return to bed; well yes ... you took her off her oxygen under physically challenging conditions! Eventually Hallworth sent her back to the hospital for the shortness of breath caused by removing the oxygen while walking. And that was that. She was readmitted and we were basically at square one. Older folks decondition pretty quickly. I have a theory: I think the glowing reviews of Hallworth are from people whose family-members are either suffering from dementia, or (sorry to say) just not going to get better. Maybe caring for those patients and treating their families with kindness are Hallworth's core competencies. If you are looking for a facility for a family member in this situation, Hallworth may be a fine choice, and I will say the night nurse at the desk was wonderful. But they really did not seem to know what to do with a sharp mind, in the head of a person who could expect to get better and live independently after some effective PT. My anecdotal information is that the staff behaves as if no one is watching or listening when alone with a patient, until that patient surprises them with lucid conversation. My mother was a challenge for them, and someone there figured out a way to get her out of their hair. If you're choosing rehab or nursing care as an advocate for a family member, I empathize. It's not easy. For what it's worth, my mother did eventually regain her independence after receiving PT while attached to oxygen. She no longer needs oxygen, and has resumed a busy life.

Our family was impressed with the caring floor staff, activities, meals, grounds, pool, and convenient location. When COVID hit, the facility did as much as they could to keep everyone safe during incredibly challenging circumstances. Unfortunately, near the end of Mom's time at Wingate, she had a sudden medical crisis that resulted in her being moved to the Memory Care side and put on hospice, just at the time a new Nursing Director named Misty Keough came on board there. Misty exhibited a very troubling ignorance about hospice, end of life care, and Alzheimer's. She was also horribly antagonistic toward our family and the hospice personnel. (Her unprofessional behavior was witnessed not just by our family and the hospice nurses, but also our private aides and members of her own floor staff.) In conversation with our family, Misty was demonstrably contemptuous of hospice care. On various occasions she referred to hospice, pro-hospice people, and the use of comfort meds on one's deathbed - as "euthanizers." Her gatekeeping behavior resulted in the truly horrible and unnecessary suffering of our mom on her deathbed. (Misty literally refused our aide's and family's requests and pleas for comfort meds on the last day of our Mom's life - until the hospice nurse forcefully confronted Misty. Misty actually threatened to kick me out of the building that day, when I reported our mom in distress.) In the days preceding Mom's death, when she could no longer swallow, the hospice nurse left specific orders to quit force-feeding her because it caused her to aspirate. Misty overruled that order and told her staff to continue - resulting in painful episodes of Mom choking and vomiting. The reason I'm not leaving a single star on this review is that to Corporate Wingate's credit, when their leaders found out about Misty's actions, they took the matter extremely seriously. The VP Chris Stack responded immediately - reassuring our family that Wingate as a company was not anti-hospice, and that the entire staff at Wingate would undergo extensive training so that this situation would never happen again. The Exec. Director Vincent Messina, to his credit, was also immediately receptive to hospice training for Misty and his staff. Last bit of advice - for families looking specifically for Memory Care - I would suggest you look at the Wingate Blackstone facility nearby instead. It's recently renovated, has two levels of memory care, and has a proper medical director/doctor on site.

I beg you, do NOT bring a loved one here! My grandmother…read moredied because of them! If I could give zero stars I would. Where to even begin?! My grandmother was admitted late January for REHABILITATION services she NEVER received. She was located in the 4th floor and the second you step out of the elevator onto the floor all you can smell is urine and crap! The hallways are always filled up with patients left unattended on chairs. The rooms are disgusting and dirty. Staff is rude, uneducated and disrespectful. My grandmother was not treated for anything because she was 90 years old. Every time I would bring up the rehab services they would just say they're not giving her any because of old age - which is bs since the reason the hospital sent her there was for that. She was 90 years old but old age doesn't always automatically mean they should be treated like they're dying. We visited her everyday and I have countless videos and pictures of how dirty she was found. There were several times my family even found her naked!! One of those times there was even a nurse checking her blood pressure and she didn't even have the decency to cover her up. She had dementia and couldn't eat by herself. We would find her in her room with the door closed with old food next to her bed. No one would feed her or give her water. She would always beg us for water when we were there. Her blankets and sheets were always dirty. Took us MONTHS to break her out of the & she passed away 3 days later. On her autopsy it states she dies due to malnutrition!!! I promise on everything I love I will finally shut this place down. Even if it's the last thing I do.

I demanded to see the manager and the head nurse and thank God I did when they took her vitals. She was dying. Her blood pressure was dropping. Her heart rate was dropping and they had to call the ambulance. How do I not shown up there my mother would've been dead.
