We accidentally booked our reservation for Monday and showed up on a Saturday Members Only event and the lovely people at Winter's Hill were so kind and let us do a tasting anyway. They told us all about the wines, made us feel like family, and when no Ubers or taxis would come get us to bring us to our dinner reservations, one of the lovely women from the vineyard drove us. The wines were fantastic and we ended up signing up for one of the memberships they were that delicious! We cannot recommend this spot and these people more!!! read more

The owner is extremely ignorant and was very rude to me just for passing through on my bike. There is no indication that this road is "private", as he claims. I can't believe how argumentative he was with me for absolutely no reason. He argued that there are no "Public Property Signs" posted. You can't reason with a fool. I've been wine tasting in the Eola Hills in Salem numerous times. I've been to the Dundee Hills only twice. That will definitely change. I absolutely adore the Dundee Hills wineries. It was only by shear happenstance that I even found this winery (I was searching for other wineries near Domaine Serene where we had a fabulous Yelp event). Was I glad I found Winter's Hill. Everyone at the winery was delightful. And the wine was incredible. The Pinot Noirs were fruity exactly how I like them. There was a great deal on Pinot Gris going on (6 for $60)--great price for a light, very drinkable white wine. A picturesque location near several other wineries. Friendly staff. Great wines. Remember those obnoxious Ernest and Julio Gallo commercials from about ten years back with the yuppies, sitting around in some huge colonial villa, buzzed just enough to find each other attractive, loudly talking about nothing in particular, and sipping really shitty wine? It turns out people like that actually exist. I've never seen any of them in the course of my daily life, and yet whenever I go wine tasting in Dundee (which happens as infrequently as I can get away with) they're fucking everywhere. I usually have to take a few cyanide capsules with me, lest I fall into enemy hands. Considering the aforementioned regular clientele, the sterile, corporate surroundings most wineries feature, along with the pourers who are clearly reciting a memorized script, I think wine tasting might be my own personal version of hell. Dundee is less than an hour drive from Portland, but sometimes it can feel like a lot like California. Now, there are a lot of wineries in the Willamette Valley, and there are a lot of exceptions to the standard hellish experience. Winter's Hill is one of them: 1. Beautiful grounds, which they'll let you hike around on (see photos). 2. Sustainable farming practices that they actually know something about. (Ask the staff at most vineyards about sustainable farming, an they'll say something like, "It, you know, like, sustains, and stuff.") 3. Nice, genuine people; no snobbery at all. The aging yuppies (ouppies?) from the EJG commercial hate these people. 4. A barn. That's the tasting room. A big, red barn. You know, like you're on a farm. Not like you're in a fucking Starbucks. Oh, right, and the wine. Oddly, it's not really the most important part of the experience, since you can buy wine anywhere, and very often for a lot cheaper. They seem to take particular pride in their dessert wines, which I usually don't love because they can kind of punch you in the face, but theirs are more subtle, not so dominant. It's hard to be a good judge of pinot noir in a state that's drowning in it, but, generally speaking, if the pinot noir is good enough for Vitaly Paley to serve in his restaurant, it's good enough for me. I look forward to paying another visit; this time I may even leave the cyanide at home. read more

Made a trip out to Dundee for some wine tasting this Saturday. We hit up this tasting room as well as Vita Hill, De Ponte and Zerba. This is not a tasting room I would re-visit. WE got there and had to wait for the woman to arrive. They pour 4 wines which were just so-so and charge $10 for a tasting. If you buy 6 bottles you can get your tasting free. When we commented on that policy they said -"Domaine Druhin" does a case for a free wine tasting." Well they are no Domaine Druhin. I say save your 10 bucks and go up the hill to Vista Hills. read more

In no way was our experience over complicated with pretentious staff or other patrons- we had good conversation and a great time. Bought a couple of bottles and have recommended stopping by this gem to quite a few people. We were there on a weekday morning so no crowds. We arrived on horseback, tied up our horses at their corral and walked over to the main building. I really enjoyed the tasting experience here. The owners are really into their craft. We stayed inside and just did the tasting but there's a nice outdoor patio where you can enjoy a full glass if you choose. A nice variety of whites and dessert wines accompanied by nuts and chocolate. My favorite was the 2006 Pinot Gris Late Harvest. read more

Someone decided they wanted to get in to the wine business after watching the movie Sideways, they sold everything they had and now they are TRYING to make wine. Here is the problem, I don't think they have tongues, because all and I mean ALL of the wines were horrible. Even the dessert wine! I truly have not had a bad wine at Winter's Hill. Their Pinot Gris is a nice light favorite of ours and the Pinot Noir has a full fruit aroma, a subtle oak flavor and a nice dry finish. I've talked to several people who have visited Winter's Hill and we all agree how great the Gladharts are. They are very friendly and down-to-earth, they are happy to share the details about their wines, and they clearly care about sustainable farming. I stop by Winter's Hill almost every time I'm touring the Dundee Hills. The wines are great, you're nearly guarnateed to have an owner manning the tasting room, and the atmosphere is rustic. The whole experience is what wine tasting should be: a community connection. The whites are often crisp and bright, and the pinots embrace the dundee terroir. The winery is about as far up the main drag as you can get in the Dundee Hills route, so it's a great place to start or end the day. read more

We met the owner of this beautiful winery a 70 something-year-old woman. Just graceful and elegant and she served us are tasting. Her German parents originally bought the land and she and her husband decided to grow grapes eventually in 2003 they began to make wine. Their most current Pinot Noir is to celebrate their 50th anniversary of Marriage. We were at the end of our wine tasting weekend in Willamette Valley and debating whether to stop at one more before calling it quits for the day. We had just been to White Rose Estate and I saw the sign for Winter's Hill and remembered the good reviews online then found the Yelp check-in offer so decided to try them out. As seems to be a happy trend here, the owner-winemaker himself was pouring along with a couple other staff. Russell and staff were friendly and offered information about the wines as well as a bite of food to go with the first Pinot Noir. I was glad to try an older wine to get more of the tasting experiencing of a wine that has been cellared a bit. Oh by the way - check in on Yelp - you need to try the surprise offer! We bought a bottle, in fact. We liked all the wines - a pinot Blanc, rose, and 3 pinot noirs. Excellent little winery at the end of the road. By far the best stop on our Saturday wine tasting route that we did. Service was impeccable, even got to try some of the fresh squeezed grape juice as we were there in harvest season. The wines were all good and we ended up with a few bottles. The owner was the one showing us around and doing the wine tasting. She was super friendly. I would highly recommend this place. I always feel like I'm on vacation when I come to Winter's Hill. Walking around the lovely vineyard property, spotting birds of all varieties along the way and returning to a picnic and a glass of one of their delightful wines doesn't get much better. The dry rosé is my favorite on a warm summer/early fall day and the pinot noir is delicious with any meal. The Gladharts are wonderful and knowledgable people on a variety of topics and going to visit them and drink their wines is getting to know Oregon at it's best. read more

I do have to say that the reason we ended up here was because our wine guide book said they serve food. I'm all about Oregon small producers and Winter's Hill is one of my absolute favorites. The best wines for me are always found at a small, family owned and operated winery like this one. I prefer to go to smaller wineries where I find the wine to be fantastic and you get the chance to meet the owners and winemaker.
